Teather Car Racing EXPLAINED

- As soon as this guy pushes this little car, it shoots off like a rocket and reaches incredibly high speeds in no time. You see, this is called tether car racing. In this race, a miniature car with a tiny engine gets an initial push while being tethered to a central pivot, guiding it along a circular path. The person in the middle helps the car quickly reach competitive speeds as it continues to accelerate, reaching over 200 miles per hour. Now, imagine the G-force a hamster would feel inside that car!

I had a few friends that used to compete in this back in the day at Whittier Narrows California. Was really fun to watch and the newer cars are crazy fast! The track is right next to the control line circles where we would fly all the time.
At 200 mph there are about 90 Gs of force. There are about 3 tracks in the USA, 2 permanent, 1 in NY and two in CA. It was most popular in the 30's and 40's when there were around 2500-3000 racers. Now membership is down to just 150 racers. Most of the effort in the sport is tuning the engines for max speed. Max engine size tops out at 10cc.

200 mph? Since it appears to 1/25 scale, that is a scale speed of 5,000 mph. It would be super cool to have a tiny camera in one of these to show the view from the cockpit.
The guy pulling the tether in the center is taking his life in his own hands. I can imagine the tether scene from "Ghost Ship" being re-enacted someday at this track.
This sport is older than people think it is, this is one of the oldest powered model vehicle hobbies out there. This predates RC hobbies and was created around the time Control Line planes were started and both run on a similar principal. The cars and the planes bothe have a slight setting in the wheels/propeller the force them to have tension on the wires
back in '69, I had a Cox propeller powered tether car.. hardest part was pounding a nail in the playground to tie it off.. then chasing it through crowds when the string broke.

I think we should look for a hamster volunteer 😅
Assuming the world record speed of 215.92 mph and a track diameter of 19.9 m, the hamster experiences about 95 Gs.
If we assume an average hamster weight of 115 g, the hamster is experiencing a similar sensation to having either an 11 kilogram or 24 pound weight being placed on it.
What would happen to the hamster?

Inside the middle is definitely the craziest game jump rope.
That hamster is gonna experience the flattening of a lifetime
on a side note where’s my hamster-
I have a tether car that my great uncle built during WWII. It originally had a spark ignition engine, but he converted it to glow plug when that became available. I remember well the sound of the cars on the track in Oak Cliff, possibly in Kiest Park, around 1948. Somebody who did not appreciate the noise busted up the track one night, and that was the end, as far as I know, of tether car racing in the Dallas area.
Dooling?
Nice
Great story man. It's sad that all it takes is one person to ruin everything
Someone destroyed property because they didnt like something? No! Not in Texas!!! Surely they must have respected the public's rights liberties and freedoms to assemble and engage in a hobby they themselves did not engage in!
....Ya know.....since they're so concerned about 'muh rights'......
Cool story I’m from the area and didn’t know about that
Now I want to see a follow-up video with a hamster inside one of those, and a G-force meet showing what it's experiencing.
This needs to go on prize picks like yesterday
Imagine being in the middle without a platform. RIP ankles.

That last statement sounds like a challenge
Hamsters brain gonna b every where if that thing crashes
This does make you realise how fast you travel in an airliner, this car at its fastest is going about one third of the speed commercial planes travel at.
Am I the only one that has both never heard of this and would feel absolutely no loss in my life had I never heard of it?

Finally, someone did this video right. Nice job 🙏
That is the way how space-tethers works
I'm more amazed with the bearings in the wheels holding up at those speeds.

A go pro camera shot of a hamster experiencing g force at 200mph would be hilarious 😂💀

Wow so willing to admit that you like torturing animals
The guy in the middle is a good contender for final destination.
He’s the safest person there
Me and my friend used to ride our bicycles to a place called Stallikon near Zurich/Switzerland to watch the RC ‘s being raced..fantastic times.
I have been training for this moment my entire life.
I would trust that safety net with that speeds 😂
The hamster driving the car has to wear a special G-Suit.
Whoa, whoa! Don't go that far. The hamsters don't deserve that kind of force
It's safe to assume a hamster isn't surviving this one.
Squirrels are playing running next to it, riding it, taking selfies with it, without anyone noticing
So about those hamster, there’s really only…. One way to find out…
I thought the same thing butt with a squirrel😂

This is cool and has been sice the late 80s/ early 90s. These guys basically customize every part of these to go as fast as possible and they can go up to like 280mph, the video was underselling them.
The guy in the middle looked like he started saying his prayers! 🙏🏽😂
This is actually good content
The forbidden jump rope 💀
stolen
my first thought: if the man in the middle steps down, his feet are gone for sure
200 mph on a radius that small? That hamster's organs are turning into a jelly😂
This shows the power of mechanical advantage. The guy in the middle puts comparably very little force into the tether, but it results with the end of the tether traveling at over 300 mph.
Nope, the power comes from the car, he just gives it a push to start it. Not mechanical advantage.
The world record is very slightly above 200mph. Did you get the 300 out of your ass?
A hamster at 200 grams going 2000 mph (about 900 meters per second) at a 5 meter radius would feel 32400 Newtons of force which is estimately 3240 G's
The hampster will die
Í spin a magnet to 24 million g's at 3.8 million rpm
