The JDM 1JZ Estate - 2003 Toyota Crown Athlete V Review (JDM Legends Tour Pt. 34)

- Today I'm driving a very unusual sight on UK roads - a 2003 Toyota Crown Athlete V Estate. This #1JZ Powered #Toyota is their rival to the Nissan Stagea, but for whatever reason you just don't see them here. So let's see what it's like to drive.

Depends on the generation of merc. W201/124/460/463 are known to last...
I'm very much fimiliar with I6 Toyota crowns and TBH the best thing to do with these cars is, to just keep them stock. They are reliable, robust, comfortable and all of this character compliment the looks of the car. These cars are so heavy that sideways winds have no effect on them and it is very much planted on the road. In this car it doesn't matter If there is a poorly paved road, gravel or bunch of potholes under you, you are still going 80km/h and you feel nothing. Auto transmission is smooth as hell and adds to the comfort... AND SIR, that fabric is wool and it is best seat material you can have, doesn't get cold in winter nights or hot under sun... This thing is made for pure comfort and you must leave it the way it is, it is literally best at doing its job.
1JZ actually has pretty good fuel economy for the power. Even modified running 350hp @ wheels it’s still respectable & that’s despite a swapped 4.3 diff ratio
I also daily drive one of these in the UK, a 2.5 model and honestly it is such a lovely car. I had only ever seen one before buying my own and that was at a car show. Ever since seeing that one, I knew I had to have a Crown. So I went ahead and bought one. The comfort, refinement, quality, the engine and the practicality all make it worth buying an oddball car. Also I can tell you that the standard suspension setup on these is amazing. Not only is the comfort excellent but the control through corners is exceptional too with lower than expected body roll.
The engine power is surprising, with the 2.5 n/a motor with VVT-i, it pumps out 197bhp but it honestly doesn't feel slow, at all. It kicks down and goes with urgency. Super surprising.
Nice man I'm thinking of getting the same one except a wagon. How hard is it to find parts??
@@mannyk7100 It depends what you need, common engine components and servicing components are easy to source (filters, belts, pumps, suspension, brakes etc) but anything else and you're probably going to have to get it from Japan. Body panels, interior trim, genuine accessories etc will be tricky to find. So far I've only put about 3000km on mine and the only maintenance I've done is a cambelt change and genuine Toyota parts were easy to find at Kuruma Factory.
@@archechme ohh ok, so regular/routine maintenance isn't too bad then? That's all I'm worried about. Like where do you get those common engine components? Are there other cars which have compatible parts, like maybe the supra?
@@mannyk7100 Nah, not at all. Your local parts shop will have engine oil and all fluids you need and then common engine components can be sourced from the aforementioned Kuruma Factory, that's where I've shopped at so far. I'm not sure about shared parts, I've heard that some parts from the Lexus IS200 fit on the Crown. As for the Supra, I can safely say I don't know, the only engine shared between the 170 series Crown and the Supra is the 3.0 naturally aspired 2JZ-GE. The 2JZ-GTE was not offered in the Crown.
@@archechme oh ok that makes sense, thanks for the info man! I'm really interesteded in importing one, just deciding if I want the RWD turbo or AWD non-turbo!
As a wagon fan, I totally love this review
We had the Dodge Magnum wagon here in the USA for a bit. And I really hoped it would have started a V8 powered wagon race here in America. But the Magnum ended up being more niche. And people kept buying newer and bigger SUVs. Sad but true. And it doesn't help that the Chrysler's of that era just really did not last. Hance you don't see them on the road that much.
@@theufoexperience3859 we got that here as the Chrysler 300C Touring... sadly, almost all of them are V6 diesels.
It’s an Estate not a wagon get it right

@@louisbeerreviews8964 then why do Australians a pickup a Ute? You're statement is pointless. euroman
A very interesting alternative to a Stagea. I would be putting it back to standard spec suspenion though.
Stagea is better than stageB
Its incredible how loaded up and reliable Javanese cars are, of any era. I recall driving a Honda Accord about 20 years ago which must have been built in the 80’s, it had full electric windows , electric sunroof and cruise control, pretty luxury spec for those days. Damn I want to buy an 80’s Japanese car now ...why do you do this to us JayEmm whyyyyy!!!!,
It took me a while to even realise and accept that my 90s Honda had heated and full electric wing mirrors, lights in places internal I didn't know you could put lights, ac, electric windows. It still feels great, too.
The retractable front splitter on one car
(Can’t remember what it was) blew me away
Jay pumping out these videos like they're going out of fashion haha. Awesome content yet again!
One of my favourite cars, becoming more popular here in Australia. I'm looking to import the S200 model with the 4.6L V8 and Majesta Type G F-Package - the 4 seater executive saloon version.
Extremely popular yeah
Just a year ago you could find athletes for sale at around 10-12k
Now they go upwards of 16k
Man I should've pulled the trigger on the crown but it is what it is
The saloon version of the Crown Athlete looks like a mafia car. So sick. We used to ogle at them in Bangladesh.
A guy down my street actually owns a black Crown saloon, with huge chromed wheels, and I agree there's nothing more mafia
I have a 1978 super saloon and I must agree with u there one of the best looking cars and amazing to drive to this day I haven’t driven anything as comfortable as the crown
I've got an saloon VX. Love it the BBS split rims they come with suit the car perfectly
@@chappy2121 a VX? aren't there only 300 of them or something like that?
@@bipu496 yeah thats it. Its a genuine one too and only one in UK as far as I'm aware . Next to no info on them. I dont know any UK Crown owners would hope to meet up with someone find out some info. These have a bodykit on them and supposedly 300bhp from factory as advertised, turbo is slightly different also, and you get a yamaha strut brace under the bonnet. Had a mate in it who's got an e60 m5 v10 he reckons its as quick
Secured one in Japan last week, buzzing for it!
Still have it?
I would give a mildly important organ to have this car in the states 😭😭😭
You could always just import one. Pretty sure they will accept a digital payment as opposed to a jar with your spleen in it. But yeah I totally get the metaphor. It's really unique and special. Something about the front end and the entire stance of it just reeks of cool. But it shouldn't because it's a station wagon and the Mystery of how they made it look cool being what it is somehow makes it even cooler. Plus the legendary Toyota durability just makes it a no-brainer.
@@theufoexperience3859 pretty sure it isn't old enough to import, something to do with 25 years?
@@ezrac9921 can't you get round that by bringing a 15-year-old one into Canada and putting Canadian plates on it?
Wow, it really does have a striking resemblance to the Mercedes E class from the side view
Carl Grint infinitely more character and fun than an E-Class too
Think that's what they were going for. I have a saloon version a VX, and they really do. Loads more kit on them, better engines apart from the v8 amg lump and more reliable
'Chrysler Le Bastard'
I have begun to love these Japanese cars...
I've got a 2003 saloon here in uk! :) love it.
I've just got a late 01 crown vx. Had it about 5 weeks absolutely love it
need to be careful with typos on something called the 1JZ wagon...
:D
Soarer? Yes, good god yes, owned a twin turbo, 2.5ltr 6cyl and it was just gorgeous to drive and own, go for it👍
I have an obscene amount of want for one of these. Theres a blitz model on Trader at the moment for 15 bags, way out of my league but at around £5k for this spec with a 1JZ it certainly has my attention 🤔
Awesome video as always Jay, your impartial opinion, love for and knowledge of the cars you review never ceases to amaze 👍
That engine shot needed 70% more doves being released JayEmm. Your directorial genius must be on a little holiday too 😉 🕊🕊🕊🕊
Rust isn't really an issue to much on these, the chassis legs are treated, but get it under sealed anyway
I've got a 2003 mark2 blit, was sorely tempted with the athlete.
This car is as rare as the videos about it I’m in Australia and my first car was a 1978 crown super saloon and still the most comfortable car I have ever been in I still have that car and not letting go of it any time soon there just amazing cars to drive and in mine in 1978 with auto lock doors power windows ac and a air purifier in the back if I was him I would put the stock suspension in it and keep it stock
Yes we have rather a number of these JDM Crowns in NZ. Jap imports we call them. A lot of car for the money. Very very few Estate though.
We also get the Crown Majesta which have the Lexus V8. I have a very rare Progres NC300. 1999 model. Has the 3 litre version of that fantastic straight 6. The same gearbox and the same steering. Most of the interior fit out is directly borrowed from Lexus. It was intended as a C class and 3,series challenger. Bloody great car. 20 years old and absolutely everything works as the day it was new. Definitely one of THE all time best and reliable straight 6 engines ever produced.
Looks like the perfect car for a Japanese surfer.
I had a used Toyota High Ace van when I lived in Okinawa. It was for Speed on the column with the driver seat passenger seat and a bench. Behind the bench with loads of room. We used to put our boards in the back and serve check the island. But yeah the crown would have been doing all that in style. That van I bought was so old and Rusty it had holes in the roof that we plugged with surf wax to keep the rain from coming in. And yep you guessed it when I got hot it dripped surf wax on the inside of the car. Thank God that stuff always smells really really good.
I sold my IS350 for a 99 Crown Athlete V sedan and i'm absolutely loving it! Mine came with Japanese coilovers and I put 19" wheels on them. Top tip, disconnect the BOV plug and sit back and enjoy the sututus!
Still have it?
@@Ballsack44 Funny you ask, I'm actually selling it
i bought a 2800 crown in gold in berlin in 1982 for 800 pound loved it ,sold it in manchester £1400 to my mates dad ,its still in his garage in bits .
Hello, I found your channel after a recommendation from Ben at Dad Cars!
Always been a petrol head but have a soft spot for JDM barges and the like! Had a Stagea RS Four S in the past and a friend of mine has a Crown Athlete wagon like this one, with a few mods though!
Love your content and I’m glad you’ve been able to help Ben out too! Your collaboration videos are great! 😃
God how I love sports versions of Japanese estate cars..... 🤤
I wish you drove this car with original suspension setup. The best thing about these is, that there is no drama and no pretending; you want a comfortable luxury car, well crown is exactly that, nothing more, no wannabe power and performance ... With the bonus of not only being reliable but very robust actually.
“You could have one of these, I’m pretty sure she could fit” 😂. Felt like a lifetime waiting for the next word
That 1-JZ growl and turbo chatter at the beggining🤤
Until recently I owned a JDM Toyota Progres`. It had the 3ltr 2jz brilliant performance . Plenty of torgue. The Progres' was a Benz C class competitor. Most of it was Lexus. Brilliant car. Very very few of them here in New Zealand. I would trust that engine to the moon and back.
Such a cool car, everyone loves a fast wagon anyway but this rocks! Great review
Omg YES. I love these things.
100k subscribers soon James!! 👊
Yeah he's really good.
Practicality, room, comfort and Japanese reliability. What more could you want?
I love Estate cars but this one is a beauty. 😍
Just found your channel, now to binge watch a load of videos! Great stuff, man
Definitely some familiar bits of interior in that compared to my old GS430. Strangely that had a 5 speed auto box, would have thought this would have had the same box actually, a bit dissapointing it doesn't have another ratio. Cool thing though!
Really love it. Have not seen a Toyota Crown in the USA. But you do see right-hand-drive Skylines. The other day, I spoke with a woman who had a Toyota High Ace import, with right-hand-drive. Pretty cool. It was nicer than the Toyota high ace I had and Okinawa as a young Marine. It was a four speed on the column with only one bench seat behind the driver and passenger seat. Used to be able to Surf check the island with about $10 of fuel. Our boards and all our gear easily fit in the huge cargo area in the back. And we had to force surf wax into some of the holes in the roof to stop the rain from coming in. When it got really hot the surf wax would melt and drip into the car. But for 800 bucks I drove it for about a year. Be great to find something like that here in Texas. But I have seen some nice big Lexus LS 460 s for around 10 grand that have barely over a hundred thousand miles on them. Seems like those Toyota V8 will last forever.
Always low key lusted after Crowns.
Hello from Russia, in Far East of Russia a lot of JDM cars )
Thank you for review)
Looks a lot llike an LS400 estate.
I was going to say, looks like the lovechild from an LS and an e-class estate
The LS400 was called the Toyota Celsior in japan. Came with a v8 and loads better equipped. The gs300 in japan was the Toyota Aristo the only other car that came with a 2jz gte as standard
The swinging climate control vents?
Good point on less gears. I'm a fan of 4/5 speed manual gear box. 6+ gears only makes sense to me for track day cars or 400+ bhp cars.
5-speed manuals usually have a 1:1 top, 6th is just an overdrive. The Tremec 5s, 6s and 7s are the exception to that, 4th is the 1:1 gear, everything above is an overdrive, even the 7-speed where some closer ratios might have been useful. The ZF 6-speed auto in my 760Li is annoying as fourth is underdriven while fifth and sixth are both overdrives, and it hasn't got the power to pull to redline in either of those gears... fifth is where sixth should be and it needs another gear between fourth and fifth!
amazing stuff
Just to help the guys out there with Japanese Imported Toyota's or any Toyota.
Look up Amayama. They are genuine parts suppliers in Japan but deliver world wide. Type in your chassis number and it gives and exploded diagram and part numbers.
This has helped me so much with my Japanese imported LandCruiser.
They have two offices, one in Japan and one in the middle east. Try to buy from Japan as the middle east parcels always get pulled at customs and you end up paying import duty.
See a v8 model around here which looks lovely.
The issue is car knowledge, unless your into cars you dont know the bargains you can get out there. They just get what's recognisable and boring.
I believe the crowns are pretty much Lexus LS but seemingly more engine choices.
Wish they make Crown vehicles with a left hand side.Beautiful cars, some JDM'S are such a nice vehicles.
Best conformation ever. Chrysler le basterd. Hilarious.
Just wanted to add real quick as watching this whilst putting ikea crap together xD I owned a 1999 Toyota Chaser Tourer V with a manual gearbox and for fuel economy here’s what I can add to the subject if it helps your mate at all. Drive it hard and it will drink it’s fair share, tipping around town light to light sitting in traffic it will be thirsty but get it on a motorway or main road an it’s really good on the juice for what it is. I drove my Chaser from Wicklow Ireland to London on one tank of fuel(roughly €70 at the time to fill) and then filled it in London and drove back on one tank of fuel all at motorway speeds. The Crown is heavier though and that one in particular has an auto so it may be worse or may be a bit better but I’d suspect it’s the former rather than the latter. Great engine but sadly it’s let down by that gearbox he has lol, to be honest he should have bought a manual Chaser as opposed to the Crown but either way I wouldn’t mind either. Thanks Jay.
Thanks for the tip, although I specifically wanted one of these for practicality and daily driving, also slightly rarer than a JZX 90/100. Also the near £10K price difference between the two
@@winger3000 yeah manual chasers go for silly money these days. still kicking myself for not buying an auto Chaser Tourer V couple years ago for £4k
I use my crown vx on weekends. About £75 to fill it on super. I get average 24-25. If it was all motorway driving I think over 30-32mpg
I was also looking at a manual chaser, but to get a nice one the money is daft. These have the same engine, mines been lowered but the vx is turned by Yamaha and Modellista anyway but theres barely any body roll at all and it still rides good. Plus mines 1 of 300 made so mega rare to boot. Also crowns tend to be very well looked after mines still got the door sill protector plastic covers on it
OG Goatz Chasers are extremely practical and affordable if you choose wisely, I picked a very very lightly modified car with one owner from new and high mileage (240,000km) but with a lot of documentation to back up the cars history. Auction houses tend to be harsh with grades when a car has high mileage and when people see a high mileage lowish grade mild modified Chaser they tend to keep looking as people want low mileage high spec cars. My guy in Japan told me that the car was basically brand new, he couldn’t believe the grade they gave it which I believe was a 3 B which is an average slightly worn looking car and urged me to bid on it. Long story short I did and I won the auction and had the car, a factory manual 1JZ Chaser in Ireland for €6,900, an absolute steal. When I collected the car at Dublin port I genuinely couldn’t believe what I had just bought, it still had the factory protective film over the Chaser door sill plates so let that give you an idea, it was flawless lol. It was my daily for 2 years and was as usable as any Lexus of 5 series, I absolutely adored it but sadly a family emergency meant it kinda had to go and I sold it and I’ve never stopped thinking about it since lol. You can get them at a good price you just need to find the gem in what’s considered the “crappy” Chasers. Not knocking the Crown though, I was looking at them too, anything with the 1J in it is a sure bet but if you’re gonna hold onto it get an R154 box into it, you’ll love it twice as much as I’m sure you already do. Best of Luck with it, enjoy it.
I have one in the UK woohoo love it.
How you getting on with yours? I've got a VX saloon but don't know anyone else who has one.
@@chappy2121 Had mine for two years. Fitted a Pioneer android in place of the CD stacker and a UK navigation unit.
