    I was oddly distracted by the hollowed out logs.... was that an art sculpture or something done to logs for other reasons that I don't know about?

      Same. They must be a sculpture as pine would be not very durable as a pipe. They maybe short logs as they are hand hewn out. They could have curved bottoms (half sphere) inside almost visible. They make sense as a sculpture.
