• DragonBall Z Abridged:... - Komedie
“Oh, Trunks.. you can’t fathom the amount of dead men behind me..” is my number one reason for loving Taka’s cell. Absolutely brutal and chilling every single time.

Megami from start to end is the most impressive, imo. She went from the epitome of adequate cheap Internet parody voice to absolute professional-obviously everyone else reached that level by season 3 at the latest, but Corinne made the biggest jump in improvement.

The bluntness of both “That you let him die” and “I’m going to power up now” is literal textbook screenwriting.
how so?
@@TheRealMycanthrope They’re simple. There’s no excess, nothing that needs to be added, nothing that can be taken away, and they cut to the core of the characters.
Producers have paid millions for scripts that didn’t contain writing this good. Watching this behind the scenes on Cell specifically is fascinating, because Cell doesn’t need to throw a punch to hurt. He can cut them deep using just his words. This is a brilliant decision and it makes his fights dangerous on a whole other level
I just got the neat idea that Krillin’s slow shift to a kinder person wasn’t just because of Maron putting him in debt and himself wanting to be good to 18, but also because of Gohan. Spending over a month in space with a (mostly) innocent and cheerful kid and the child of the guy who considers him his best friend.
That and being one of the few people to die twice is gonna cause you to revaluate your life
@@creeperkiller78It's almost akin to some sort of enlightenment, which fits considering he's modeled after a Buddhist monk.
Scott is 100% right about comedy writing standards nowadays. So many writers are afraid of commitment and end up using the jokes they've seen before instead of creating anything original for the scene.
Eh, Team Four Star is no stranger to doing this either. I get Scott's frustration but he's seriously generalizing if he thinks thinks this is plaguing ALL of modern comedies and dramedies

24:00 to Lani's point that Cell deciding not to kill trunks is the inference of the scene:
Trunks says "No one will remember you". And Cell decides to let him live *for* the sake of "You. *You* will remember. I'll kill everyone you came to save, cripple you, and then when you're left broken in body in spirit, throw you back in your time machine, and let you be the sole survivor of *another* timeline."

I wonder if Cell constantly trying to be friends with 16 is in his DNA/programming because Dr.Gero would have wanted all of his creations to treat the one modeled after his son like a friend.
It's possible
It could be the A̶n̶d̶r̶o̶i̶d̶s̶Cyborgs influencing him.
I choose to believe it’s a combination of programming and absorbing the androids that did it. He barely acknowledges 16 in his imperfect form, a little more in his semi-perfect form, but once he’s gotten both he’s actively trying to be nice.
"Goku had defeated an entire army, several demons, and sent a rabbit to the moon!"
"D- Did you make that last one up"
My favorite line of the episode 😂
My automatic response to that question is always "no... no, that really happened. I watched it. It was very weird."
Early Dragon Ball is one helluva drug
I started watching early DB and it’s amazing how early that happens. Embodiment of “is it really jumping the shark if you never come back down?”
@@daltonwilliams1723or how about "you can't jump the shark, if you're already riding it!"
@ianrastoski3346 this might be one of my favorite lines period.
I love that Kaiser hates the trope of writers where they have to make fun of their dialogue to avoid being genuine. It’s way to common now a days.
It shows a lack of faith in their own writing. They’re afraid to show how invested they are, because caring makes you vulnerable. But if you, the writer, don’t care about your own creation, how can you expect anyone else to? And in a comedy especially, if you don’t CARE then what’s the point?
"Just get it over with and kill me already." Is such an underrated line, you can just feel how tired and heartbroken Trunks is. How he's done everything in his power to help these people escape a horrible future, but his own allies won't listen, and have done the exact opposite. Now he too can't save them, and is just ready to die right then and there.
Not only that, but HE also failed in his mission by hiding his USSJ power from Vegeta, because he didn't want to hurt his fathers pride.
He literally put his fathers pride over saving the Earth.
Also the realization that not only has he failed to protect everyone, but that him trying to help has made things so much worse.
It really is such an emotional line. Up until this point, Trunks' entire character has been about hope, a determination to fight against this horrid reality that he's been exposed to. At every turn, he's failed and seen things get even worse.
Finally, in this moment, you can see where he just gives up. It's chilling.
@@kylethecherry-nosesanalite1723 which makes cell your suffering isn't over yet type attitude with the tournament just chilling
To defend Kaiser. You guys had already referenced that Cell wanted to do the tournament when he became perfect. He sang the line "R for revolution, which will be televised." Implying that he knew what he wanted to do. And he even said, after Trunks asks him what he is planning, "My Revolution." So now he is getting to that part that he illuded to from the second he became perfect
I was going to make that same point. You beat me to it. Good job!
Indeed; or, it could be he knew that his previous feasts were making the news, so was generally planning to take his time destroying the world and let it be televised as he was doing it- but the idea for the tournament instead coalesced around fighting some strong people (or just Goku) when he had the realization.
i.e., Cell wanted to show of his PERFECTION, but hadn't really decided _how_ he would do it.
F is for how fucked you are now allow me to repriiiiise
My headcannon is that Cell had the idea of televising his power somewhere in his mind, but Trunk’s comment convinced him to go ahead and do it, since the boy had a point, how are the people going to remember him if he does not kill Earth’s greatest heroes in front of a camera, for everyone to see?
This was always my interpretation!

Krillin trying to cheer Vegeta up by talking about how terrible his life is is so adorable, like an adult trying to make a toddler laugh by pretending to accidentally trip and fall.
It was truly the moment where they got Krillin.
The thing that makes Tien's frustration at Trunks' power-up more upsetting for him is that, at the time, neither of them knew he couldn't kill anyone with this form.
Trunks could’ve killed semi perfect cell even without powering up to Super Saiyan Buff Bird
@@UnleashthePhuryConsidering Trunks was already way faster than Semi Perfect Cell though, that might have been the best time to use that form. He's fast enough that the speed debuff wouldn't have been as much of a detriment, and the extra power would let him wipe him out in fewer hits. He probably could've killed Semi Perfect Cell way more quickly, maybe even before he absorbed 18.

When they started talking about “average” or first-pass jokes making it into the final script, all I could think about was the “Idiot Rock/Idiot Crater” joke from earlier in the season. They all mentioned that they weren’t particularly proud of it, but it’s one of my favorite jokes in the show. Sometimes a joke just hits right for an individual and it’s a fools errand to try and predict (or preemptively lampshade) the audience reaction to it
I thought immediately to the routine of Piccolo delivering bad one liners and them making fun of those. If that's what they're talking about, they do it themselves and I love it. I didn't get any of their examples though since I haven't watched Rick and/or Morty.
@@sputnikdxYeah and I find it a little hypocritical of them talking about how they don't like jokes followed by sassy remarks about how bad said joke was when they themselves do it as well. Hell they do it later on in episode 59 when Cell destroys the platform and Krillin jokes about how there is a hole in the ring followed by Gohan saying: "really?"
I also loved idiot rock/idiot crater
@@Sfyft But Krillin doing it is a part of his established personality. It's okay to have one or two characters call out that kind of shit when it's in character and not overused to hell and back to the point where there's no sincerity.
The problem is modern comedy stuff ends up doing it literally all the fucking time with literally every character, meaning there's NO room for sincerity and NO room to pull off lines that actually work in context.
@@MSCDonkeyKong But they put it as if they're above using those kind of jokes when that is clearly not the case, it doesn't matter the context, and that's where I have a problem with. It's a small moment, but the "that still doesn't make us friends." "I'M TRYING, 16!" exchange between 16 and Cell gets me every time. I like the idea that as much of an unremorseful villain as Cell is, he still would want to attempt to bond with his last remaining sibling (he hasn't taken out yet).

I think "The apple doesn fall far if you *pound* the tree hard enough" would have made a good line too
making cell have the epiphany of the fact that nobody would have remembered him and thus deciding to put up the tournament, was the right decision IMHO. It's so cathartic.
Of course, the "I'll have a tournament, then blow up the world" seems kinda self-defeating to the "make people remember me" plan.
I absolutely love how incredibly devastating this encounter between Cell and Trunks is, Cell is utterly dominating him, showing no respect, laughing in his face and reminding him of his failures and shortcomings, dissecting him piece by piece all for the sake of his own amusement, it is so good to watch and elevated by the delivery of Taka and Kaiser.
It’s amazing how much Cell was holding back here.
Also, Cell confirming Vegeta could do what Trunks did doesn’t change that Vegeta was utterly humiliated.
Just throwing heavy shade, don't humiliate yourself further, the Prince of All Clowns does not like competition

It doesn't change Vegeta's humiliation but, it does make Trunks' worse.
"What channel?!" is probably the hardest I'd laughed at a TFS joke up to that point 😂 Simple but brilliant
Some of the best jokes just make you mad with how funny they are.
“Goddamnit 16! This is a dramatic moment, but that was perfect.”
It's the tonal contrast with (gestures vaguely at everything else in episode)
All of them.
My favorite line I think is "No, if I were having fun, I'd be killing Goku." "That still doesn't make us friends!" "I'M TRYING, 16!!"
"How durable is he? How durable am I? Questions for later."
It was this moment from Ep48 that Cell knew he was going to have SOME kind of event where he fought everyone just to see if he could beat them all. My interpretation of the end scene here is that Trunks inspires Cell to put the whole thing on TV. It plays into the dramatic and intimate nature of his character. He doesn't just want to kill Goku - he wants to give the world a front row seat.
"You know, if I had a watch, I'd be looking at my wrist *really* condescendingly right now..." has become something I say almost daily. such a good line...
So obviously the "dead men" quote gets a lot of love, but I think the little exchange between Trunks and Cell before they throw down deserves some more love.
"You're just a child playing hero... complete with spandex."
"And you're just another mistake that I have to correct!"
I see that too; Cell is here just for fun at this point, but Trunks has that strong sense of responsibility even for things that aren’t his fault (presumably due to being the last hope from his timeline). That’s both childishly idealistic but also genuinely heroic.
Nah, those lines are cringe. DBZA should be a parody not a rewrite.

I think I prefer the final version of Cell's reason for starting the Cell Games. It ties back to how he points out at the beginning of the episode that Trunks' attempts to help indirectly made things worse, so when Trunks tells Cell no one will remember him when he dies, he decides to screw him over one more time by twisting his message into an inspiration and then pinning the blame on Trunks for giving him the idea.

Cells "Oh Trunks... you cant fathom the amount of dead men behind me" line is only matched by Frieza's "No no no go on... Give me some ideas" in shear amount of raw coldness and perfectly villainous.

I really prefer that Cell gets his idea in that moment where Trunks gives up. It reinforces his quick wit and keeps him in character with how he enjoys mentally deconstructing everyone, and now it includes everyone on the planet. Cell probably wants revenge in episode 49 where Cell is talking to the islanders and just gets angry at how stupid everyone is.
What Kaiser and Taka were talking about with writers cringing at their own dialogue is an example of something called “Bathos”, it’s hard to explain but Overly Sarcastic Productions made a great video about it and why it’s so frustrating
I love that channel
1. I absolutely LOVE the line _"Trunks, you couldn't _*_fathom_*_ the amount of dead men behind me."_ It's the same level of cold as the _"How?! HOW MANY PEOPLE?!", "...Enough."_ thing.
2. I absolutely love the timing of Cell revealing Trunks is the reason he's even there to begin with. If this particular section of the saga was a movie and this was the 3rd Act, I would totally drop that bomb where you did it.
I love the pure _joy_ you can see Curt has about playing Cell.
Lani: "Ackchyually..."
Taka and Kaiser: *war flashbacks*
I just love the bit of Taka constantly forgetting his ending line, and all the gags of him remembering the line are just pure gold.
i'd also like to propose "i guess the apple doesn't fall far when the tree's already short"
"Doesn't fall far from a short tree"
Yes. All I can say is yes.
5:18 “Does Gohan know, by the way? …That you let him _die.”_
That line wasn’t just cold, it was liquid nitrogen. 😳
Why not solid nitrogen?
Personally I find the line weak. Gohan himself knocked Trunks out to fight alone, even in the manga version where Trunks is already SS before Gohan's death. And considering 17 said he hadn't even used half his power the last time Trunks inclusion would have made no difference. So, no, Trunks didn't "let" Gohan die.
@@kyuubinaruto17 Objectively, you are correct. However, guilt, trauma and PTSD make for a VERY nasty cocktail that wreaks havoc on your sanity. I can guarantee you that, in quiet moments, Trunks has the search for Gohan on a loop in his head, unable to stop it from playing over and over, constantly wondering what would have happened if he were stronger? What if he were faster? What if he'd woken up earlier? What if he was already a Super Saiyan?

Here's another one " I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when the trees as tall as vegeta"
"Does Gohan know by the way?"
"Does he know what?"
"That you let him die...."
This sequence is perfect. Literally one of if not my favorite dbza scene. The lines are so simple yet perfect (pun now intended) and the loud droning sound is amazing as it leads to the last line when the wave crashes and all other sound stops. Silence.
Words can't describe my love for this scene.
I like Lani's and Taka"s decision to go with the whole "no one will remember you" concept. It has more depth and nuance than just wanting to start a tournament.
“oh Trunks, you can’t fathom the amount of dead men behind me” is one of the best cryptic things said EVER! 👌
I like the "What Channel?" Joke because it also fits the period. Back then in the late 90s early 2000s there wasn't a lot of options for Searching for things like there is now. If you didn't know what Channel or time something was supposed to be on you were kinda screwed. My Godfather used to keep a little tv guide book by his Couch that he was sent each month. He would always open it up to see the programming schedules. Now everything is Streamed and on Demand, search functions everywhere.
"You couldn't *fathom* the amount of dead men behind me." It evokes so much. How many people had to die to bring Cell to his ascendance? Well...
The Red Ribbon Army, and everyone they killed beforehand. Dr. Gero, his son and his androids who were absorbed. Trunk's entire timeline, Goku, Gohan and all the Z-fighters. Of course, everyone Cell ate and killed firsthand, Trunks himself included.
It goes on, though. Those millions of Namekians that died in the droughts, the countless innocents and Master Mutaito, who were slain by King Piccolo and his Demonfolk. The extinction of the entire Saiyan race, and everyone who died under the tyranny of King Cold's empire.
It's literally an un-fucking-fathomable number of death on a generational, galactic scale that brought Cell to his perfection. That line is when the fight turns, even as Trunk's theme song is blasting; it's not his moment, it's His.
MISTER Perfect His.
"How many people had to die?"
Enough
outside of maaaaybe buu's galaxy feats allegedly and maaybe zamasu timeline Cell has the biggest indirect body count just for his creation
and despite buu being annoyingly one upper character nothing he ever does or other villains is as scary as predatory reptile bug man eating people
....I never even thought about those implications, just ones that Cell personally ended. That is absolutely bone chilling, and just makes his "The whole world needs to see what it's created." line even more chilling, holy shit.
Cell really is the embodiment of the bloody history of Dragon Ball up to that point, isn’t he? Not just in tropes, but also in that the world has to be exactly as it was for Cell to become the threat he was.
I always thought Krillin should have been able to deduce that the UltraForm really wasn’t that useful. He may not have a high power level or whatever but he’s been through enough to have a sense for such things.
He probably could have if he’d stuck around for the fight

30:16 after he pulled the paper out, I was waiting for one of the others to ask why there was a picture of a butt on it
I can’t watch this and not think of this scene being portrayed in DBZ Burst Limit when Cell randomly say “WHAT’S GOKU DOING?!” 😂
10:48 Decent line from Trunks, *_Perfect_* comeback from Cell!
Taka delivering the line again at 5:55 is so smoooooth
“Oh, Trunks.. you can’t fathom the amount of dead men behind me..” is such a chilling line and also feels, to me anyway, as almost a follow up to Imperfect Cell's "... Enough"
I remember the first time I saw this episode and heard “Trunks, you couldn’t fathom the amount of dead men behind me.” I just went "Ooooooooooh, that's good!"
Kaiser, you're absolutely right to be proud of that line.
I swear the “go unreasonably buff bird“ joke always hits me like a fucking sucker Punch
5:22 Good grief, that smile on Taka’s face… 😳 That right there is proof of how damn good he is at getting into character.
21:46 I honestly didn't think that was an impression. I thought Kaiser recorded it in a "less correct" way of his trunks voice 😂😂
Sometimes I forget just how much Kaiser had to scream in this ep….
Finished watching Lani's Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged Creator Commentary to see a notification for DBZA Commentary. What a good day lol.
So, if we apply Freudian psychology terms to the writing team roles, it sounds like Lani was the Ego, Kaiser was the Superego, and Taka was the Id.
15:34 mine "the apple doesn't fall far if you burn the tree down"
Your right Tien does deserves something with all the shit he's been through
Tien is always deserving of more.
“Because I deserve SOMETHING today!”
He really did :(
18:35
I have two headcanons from this scene
1: this is what goku would be like if grandpa gohan didnt drop him on his head
2: gohan got his brains from Goku's side fo the family, after all his father is a savant and his grandfather was a scientist.
Feel like the way Cell calls the fight and undercuts Trunks line of “This fight was over before it even started” is under appreciated. I feel like that shows just how in control he is and it’s so subtle. A lovely mix of foreshadowing, comedy, and cruelty coming in from that line.
“does Gohan know, by the way?”
~perfection~
14:32 How cute. They are holding hands.
I love the OSP video on the undercutting of moments with jokes. Both the Lampshading one, and the Bathos one, but ESPECIALLY the Bathos one.
"Comedies, stop cringing at your own dialogue," is the god's honest truth. You don't have to spend all your time winking and the camera, for fuck's stake.
Said it when it happened in the episodes but I've always headcannoned the Trunks that said the "Daddy?" line was the Trucks who Cell killed
Just wraps everything we see into a neat bow
15:46 I love how all three of them work together and improve on each other's ideas.
I'm glad you're up to this episode because I had a thought a while back. Goku put Monster Carrot on the moon and the moon was blown up...twice.
I looked into this and according to Toriyama, he was floating around in space but seems to have made it back to the moon in Super.
Taka repeatedly trying to agree with Kaiser's point, only to repeatedly go off in an entirely different direction, is peak ADHD mood
Does Gohan know, by the way?
Does he know what?
That you let him die!
So damn cold, I love it so much!
Scott's performance this episode really is just amazing.
25:11 I always thought that that moment inspires Cell to have the tournament because he's thinking about his legacy. King Piccolo, the Saiyans, Freiza, all extremely powerful foes but literally outside of the main cast, no one remembers them. Like 98% of Earth are either oblivious, don't know, or don't care. Cell DEMANDS to remembered, and not just be another seasonal villian.
To be fair, I think King Piccolo is still remembered. In the Abridged universe, Piccolo lives in deserts and wastelands because the everyman still remembers the 23rd World Tournament, and in the evacuation montage they mention the Saiyan attack and King Piccolo's reign of terror
10:34 "You underestimate the size of Broly" 😂
