    7:58 An easier method to select lose part of a mesh is to hover with the mouse above the part that you want to select and press L.

      Didn't work for me either. What I did was deleting the unnecesary armatures and using the "Object Constraint Properties" on the Mech I want connected. There I selected "Add Object Constraint" - "Child of" - select the original Armature as a "Target" and select the corresponding Bone (Example my horns are connected to the head bone). Press "Set Inverse" if the Mech jumped somewhere else after being assigned to a bone. Seems to be working fine for accessoires but I don't know how it will fare with clothing during movement. (Only started with Blender two days ago so I could be doing some unneccesary bs but it's working for me right now)

      @@DarkmastersSCHINKEN when i do the object contraint thingy, for some reason when i go to merge the meshes (the hair with the body) it usually takes the effect off and the hair stops moving with the body, is there anything i can do? i'm scared that when i port the model into unity i wont work properly

    So my clothing has no bones and I followed your instructions to attach and shape them to the body but they wont move with the avatar in pose mode unless all the meshes are joined together, however I would like to avoid this in order to make toggle animations on some clothing Items. is there any way I can keep my meshes separate yet still allow them to move with the avatar?

    For some reason I can’t join the hair & body armatures. When I do, instead of combining into a single armature, the hair armature disappears and is replaced with something called Body that now represents the hair but refuses to merge with the armature. I was able to make this work a while ago but completely forgot how.

    6:54 I've done everything right but when i go into pose mode and move the neck bone, my models neck isnt moving with it. What do I do?

    are horns, tails, and animal ears the same process as adding hair? cause I want to add all three to my model I'm currently working

      Thanks Yup, same process, just remember to parent any bones they have to the body, like Ears to the head and tail to the hips

    I have an issue, I merged the mesh of my blouse with my model as instructed in the video, and it does move with the armature, however a small part of the mesh of the blouse pulls out into a triangle when I move the arm bone for some reason, how do I fix that?

    When i use the Fix model tool and then try to go pose model to see if the body moves with the armature but only the armature moves. While before i use the Fix model, it works perfect. Sorry if its a stupid question. Im a total noob

    i have a problem where Blender will automatically atlas some of my textures on export :/ I have 11 materials in unity and I end up with 9 in unity. I've been trying to fix it for a while

    what do you do if the Dress has an armature? to the point where it even has full on arm bones and everything, do I still just merge the Armatures together?

      You can merge it with the Body Armature, Fixing the model should remove any unnecessary bones

    Hey bro, I was sticking with you until the clothing part. I have a hoodie that has bones within it and CTRL+J to the body works but when I move the avatar in edit, parts of the hoodie don't move and some do with the body. Anyway to fix?

      Here's a video explaining how to set up clothes with bones. The just select both armatures and Ctrl+J to merge or use the merge option in Cats

      @@Aggrotard Hey bro, thanks again but unfortunately, the right arm still doesn't move after everything I've followed on the video. The sweater moves weird with the left arm however and parts of the chest move and the others don't so it could be that the 3d sweater isn't meant for blender?

      You can use it to align the clothes with the base or if it already lines up, you can just delete the extra Armature

    Okay so when i try separate the meshes it separates the body too and then when i move the armature it doesn't move the body or the cothes even when i fix it ?

      When importing models do Fix Model a few times and make sure the Armature works in pose mode, also check that youre merging to the right Armature aka the Body one. Some times if not careful you might merge to the clothing Armature instead. Thats why I like deleting any clothing armatures before merging

      i get everything from DevianArt. For clipping i suggest deleting parts of the body thats hidden under the clothes. You also optimize your model and save up on polygons.

    How do you get the huge "Model" Tab in the first place ? I'm trying to make custom Mario powerup suits and yeah I can't merge the squirrel suit and armature to my Odyssey Mario base model.

      In Blender make sure the weight paint works properly and the jacket moves with the body, then leave it as a separate mesh when exporting. Watch my video about toggles for the Unity part

      Select your Body Armature, SHIFT + Click your other armature, move your mouse over your model and hit Ctrl + J and finally Fix Model. If the clothes/whatever you merged doesn't move with the body, move on to the Data Transfer part

      @@Aggrotard Ctrl + J wasn't working often enough and I couldn't find out why. Thanks to this comment I understand that you have to have your mouse over your model as you Ctrl + J.

      you need to be careful what tou select as your source when doing the data transfer. You still get a more accurate result if you do it manually

    When i finish doing everything, my clothes do an A-pose while the body stays in a T-Pose. Moving bones does move both of them but since they're so close it's been impossible for me to just move the clothes back into position and make them fit properly again. I'll try again tomorrow and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

      After importing the clothes, scale then down so they fit as well as they can, then use Pose mode to align them with your model. Go back to Object mode and add an Armature Modifier with the clothes's armature as the source and Apply

    I'm trying to only put a watch on and once I press apply for the data transfer thing. my watch goes somewhere else not connected to the avatar at all. why is this happening and how can i fix it to stay on my left wrist?

      delete any armatures you have on the watch, move it where you want it and merge the mesh to the Body mesh, you probably won't even need a data transfer

      You can get the clothes anywhere, DeviantArt is just a really good place to find stuff. You can merge armatures with armatures and meshes with meshes but you cant merge armatures with meshes and vice versa

    Damn i watched this whole vid to see how you got it back into unity for upload after blender! It's such a pain to export it as an fbx then re set up literally everything to make it useable again. But I can't find a single tutorial that shows what people do AFTER what you showed here

    I had the same problems as yours for the skirt, but even after doing what u did, the skirt won’t move with the body like the other parts do. What else can I do?

      When doing the Data Transfer make sure you select the right mesh as the source. If you're working on a skirt it's probably Body. If it still doesn't work you need to manually Weight Paint everything

      it still has an armature that works like a body

      It might be named something else too, the Source for the data transfer should be the mesh you're merging to, ex if you're merging a hat you'd select the Head as the source etc. what the modifier does is takes the vertex groups of the source and copies them and their weights on to the other mesh being merged.

    I was struggling with this and it turns out my Blender 3.0 install which has been buggy with file managment does not recognize various shortcut keys. Once I discovered this I was able to finish this process using the drop down menus only to have a material problem pop up for no apparent reason. I then attempted a fresh start, but from a new project the materials on the base were broken. A base I had used without trouble to start the project.
    I'm using blender 3.0. There are no signs that the bugs I am contending with are a common experience. I am reinstalling via steam. Steam will better manage Blender updates, and steams install process is most likely better than the direct download that relies on Windows installer.

      Sounds weird, it shouldn't really matter what version of Blender you use as long as its compatible with Cats. Personally i use blender 2.9

      @@Aggrotard I just uninstalled blender via Windows settings but I didn't try to clean out anything manually. Sure enough the fresh install VIa Steam picked up where my first left off. Unfortunately that includes still having issues importing the base with materials. I've been pulled away from it for now though, but I haves some ideas to try out later.
      Still it sucks though, I had great momentum on the project and it senselessly crashed and burned. It's not my first avatar. It was my first time to add clothing without bones though. I'm with you though, I think I will much rather add clothing this way than with the armatures attached in the future.

      Your avatar has no materials set to this specific base or body. Yo make a material go down to the materials tab, press the + button and make a new material. I am not at my computer at the moment but that should help ^^

      Make sure you have the Armature selected and youre in Edit mode, if edit mode isnt available go back to Object mode, select Armature and it should be available

      Merging shouldn't do anything to blendshapes Unless there are duplicates in which case they might get merged, check the shape keys names before merging

      @@Aggrotard Thank you for this. I was just using the proportional editing tool and made the ears on my model pointy and moved hair a bit for the ears, this was on the basis layer. I then checked the shape keys and notice when they went to 1 they changed the model to not having the pointed ears and hair not being moved. :< Some suggested that I could try separating the mesh but then I ran into the problem with the hair as that has it's own armature. I kind of got the hair armature way from the rest of the body along with the rig. Now the ears and hair are separate, but I'm not sure if that the right thing. If I join ears and hair again to the body's armature, the shape keys affect them again. I heard something about propagate to shapes. I'm not sure how that would work though.

      Make sure you're in Object mode and that your mouse is hovering over your model

      Go to Object mode, select your models mesh and you should be able to go to Sculpt mode. Also i recommend using Blender version 2.83 the newest one doesn't work well with Cats plugin

    I CTRL+J'd everything and now I cant seperate it. My hair and shoes are connected but my hoodie and pants dont move. I tried to go into edit and select the hoodie and pants to separate them but I cant undo far enough to undo my merging. I have a perfect avatar that now goes to waste.

      im late but i saw on one of his other comments with a similar situation, he said to merge them with the body armature, and then fix the model so it should get rid of unnecessary bones :)

    It took me like 16 times of reviewing the hair merging to get it right. And for some reason my left cntrl button doesn't work for the command but the right one does. Bit weird and idk how that works, xD

      Make sure before hitting Ctrl+J to merge that your mouse cursor is over your model, otherwise it won't work

    idk why but when i do the thing to get the clothes sticking to my arms there is no apply there

      If youre using Blender 2.9 or newer the Apply should be hidden under a drop down arrow next to the camera button

    Strange whenever I move the bones only the bones moves not the model

      If it's just one mesh and one armature you can give the mesh an Armature Modifier (wrench icon) and put the armature as the source

    Not sure why there isn’t a “apply to mesh as is” option. They really need to make overly fucking complicated.

    whenever i merge the clothes to the body and remove the vertex stuff and replace them the pants no longer move with the pants

    CTRL+J is so finicky!!! Sometimes it works as advertised, but God help me if I accidentally CTRL+Z.....then it suddenly won't work anymore.

      Before hitting Ctrl+J move your mouse cursor over your model then hit Ctrl+J

    terrible tutorial. couldnt figure out how to merge the hair because the controls were changed and you didnt show us how to change them.
