    The axle nut size is 32 mm and the ball joint castle nut is 21mm. If you live somewhere where they use salt on the roads, more than likely the carrier bearing will be seized to its mount. So if you can't separate them , remove the carrier bracket that mounts to the engine. I used a long flex head wrench to get mine off. Then I beat it with a hammer while out of the car till it lossened a little and used a hammer to offset the mounting points and followed a video I found on here and worked like a charm. Once offset put the original bolt back in backwards and crank them down evenly till that bastard separates. Hope this helps someone out.

    Thanks for the great video. Definitely looks like a job I can handle at home. We just heard the clicking for the first time yesterday evening. We immediately returned home to swap vehicles since I wasn't sure what it was. I have a 2005 Altima SE 3.5 with 190,000. Already have done the inner/outer tie rods on each side as well as the struts, so sounds like the CV joint is next.

    The hardest part of this was breaking loose the lower control arm. Had to work a bit to get it loose, but after that, it was pretty easy. I had to change the rotor at the same time anyway, so I took the whole brake assembly apart, which helped getting the CV Axle out also. Doing it this way saves me from having to have the front end realigned!!!! good info in this vid.

      @Noel127 Před 6 lety

      Preston Newton lol when ever the steering components are touched the car will always need an alignment. The axles are part of the steering components. The outer tie rod moves on a axis of a spherical ball, so does the inner tie rod.

    Adding socket sizes to the video helps. But thanks for the video. I ran in to major problem after changing the passenger strut. The CV axle locked in place and would not allow me to align to the strut.

    If you live in the rust belt...good luck if the people didn't put anti-seize on the piece where the 3 bolts and the cylindrical part of the axle meet. You might need a torch and hammering galore. Just did mine, no picnic. Thankfully I have a quick jack and a friend that doesn't want to give up. It was not a fun experience, but got it done but it was not as easy as this fellow shows pulling it out with "ease".

    • @srauner1
      @srauner1 Před 8 lety +1

      I crawled under the car and placed a 6" socket extension on the lower bolt boss of the axle housing. I smacked the extension good and hard with a hammer which caused the axle housing to rotate just a bit. It won't rotate very far as the upper right boss contacts something after maybe 3/4 inch of rotation. I looked closely where the axle housing contacts the carrier bracket and discovered that in the process of rotating, the axle had pulled away from the carrier bracket just a bit - maybe 1/64 or so. It was enough of a gap to get the tip of a small pry bar into and after some wiggling back and forth with progressively larger pry bars, the axle popped right out.

    • @mrturner69
      @mrturner69 Před 8 lety

      yup def didnt come easily, the way i got it was put a sharp chisel between the flange and carrier assembly, then worked at it with prybars and penetrating oil. was still a bitch but this tip might help you in the future

    what axel nut SIZE does my 2004 nissan altima 2.5s use??

  • @bitemyshinnymetalass1569

    I have a cracked cv axel boot, it's on my 06 Altima 3.5SL. Another you tuber mechanic said that if I am hearing a clicking sound while driving and turning, then i should replace the whole axle then spend money to replace the boot. If that is true then I will hold off on replacing the cv boot. The sounds I hear when turning is like having a playing card clamp to a bicycle wheel. Could that be a sign of my whole axle about to fail ? I'm also going to replace my front side motor mount. The mechanic I took it to found a crack on there too.

    • @jasonharris996
      @jasonharris996 Před 7 lety

      You probably took care of this already, but yeah I'd just replace the entire axle. Usually, once you hear clicking, the outer CV joint is toast. Instead of replacing the joint and the likely torn boot, just replace the entire axle. Way easier.

      @bitemyshinnymetalass1569 Před 7 lety

    • @jasonharris996
      @jasonharris996 Před 7 lety

      Are you able to do it yourself? Might save a couple hundred in labor that way. Axles are a fairly easy job. They require a bit of brawn because of the bigger bolts that need to be removed, but its a very straightforward repair.
