Dude with the Blue 4runner: if you used your emergency brake a little bit when you're starting to spin the rear tires, it makes the rear axle be more of a limited slip, because the axle cannot freely spin the tire with the least weight on it. It forces the rear end to rotate at the same speed and torque.

  • @mechanicanizer3349

Use 4low second gear. It gives you the same power as first, but with more speed. That way your momentum will pull you up that hill.
I would know.. I drive a 1993 4Runner, and I can climb hills 4x the size of that..

You're absolutely right. I've owned many second Gen 4runners and 3rd gen pick-ups. 4low 2nd gear and there's now doubt. You're going to to make it. I thought they were in 2 wheel the first couple tries with the trouble they were having.

Nice Toyotas! Before you take the time to do a SAS, you guys need to do yourselves a favor and buy rear Aussie lockers. It will be the best $300 you ever spend on your rig. I had a 1994 pickup for about a decade that was all done up. The best thing I ever did was 4.88 third members from a 3rd gen 4runner and a rear Aussie locker. The Aussie locker totally transformed it off-road. I was doing stuff in 2 hi that I use to struggle to do in 4 low. Made the pickup a beast. That being said, I sold the pickup and bought a minty fzj80. Loved my built ifs pickup, but the 80 is just baller all around.

I've got a 1990 pickup with the 3.0 and 33s 4.56 gearing, rear locker, cut the back bumper off 6" for better departure angle. And honestly if these rigs had rear lockers itd make a huge difference. Sick pickup though with the 3.4. When my 3.0 gives up(its got 330k, but with plenty of life left) that's what I want to do.

A locker in the rear axle, lower tire pressure and low range would have had any vehicle up that obstacle the first time like the LC. Do the 4 runners still have the rear sway bars connected? Another 4” of articulation if you take them off.
