Played this game from when i was 7 years old. This game got me started being a gamer. Still i think this is one of the best games ever made.
Yeah, this is about where first person shooters started for most current gamers(except for Doom maybe) who were alive back then, regardless of age.
Whoever made this texture pack really understands the atmosphere Quake was trying to convey and enhanced it by 100.
+Kilo I wish they made games like this only with todays kick ass graphics. No scripted events and movement just the good old fps style. Also they could forget about that boring sci-fi design what makes every friggin' weapon armor spaceship look the same ...

correct. nothing in my mind compares to what it was like to play this game, first free for all, then team death match, then capture the flag. from the level design, to artistic direction, nothing has come close. it was like a time and place that is gone forever.

Hehehehe...I played for ages on Pentium 120 MHz 32 Mb Ram and Matrox Millenium 4Mb video card (1995)....the video card alone cost 800 dollars back then :-)

HOLY COW!! This looks awesome!! I never played Quake! I started playing in 4th grade when Quake 2 came out, that was my 2nd FPS game after Wolfenstein ofcourse and I got access to Blood, Duke 3d, Hexen but never Quake and so never played it...i will probably play it this summer with all these mods. Great video and gameplay!
Good stuff. This is to show that one doesn't need a 100+ staff to do a great title. Quake 1 ambience, sound track and fx, yet simpler than today's is still one of a kind. Maybe id didn't even intend it, but it is a work of art, as a concept, and DarkPlaces mod and Rygel texts add a lot to it.
Damn you for uploading this... now I feel like reinstalling and playing the game again for the millionth time! 😂

Some people wonder how this game ran so well on "old" PCs with 120 MHz single core (128 Kb cache) CPUs and only 36 or 48Mb od RAM (like the one I had)....the answer is VERY SIMPLE: Windows 95 weighed 320Mb while Windows 7-8-10 weigh like 2Gb...but basically do the same thing (addressing protocol and devices on the bus...that's what an OS is for). Today's Windows versions have LOADS of useless crap code in them that has to be loaded and runs saturating the much faster buses/chipsets and even the huge and fast RAM we use today.

I remember getting the shareware version of this game some time after it originally came out, it was actually the full version, but it required purchasing a serial key to unlock the rest of it, so I forgot about it... then much later, i bought the full version, so now i got two orignal CDs of this game.
I recently installed quake and spent alot of time modding and now it looks near perfect just a little dark in some areas so trying to find some better lighting...but other than that its just plain awesome with normal mapping and ultra testures, and all the other mods that I downloaded!

In the tutorial video I made, there is a link for the "easy way" to mod quake. That version has walking sounds and other stuff. Give it a try.
One idea that I like of quake is how the engine works. Im a tf2 player, and I love the idea of rocket jumping in this game. Even though I never played this game...

HI! I just downloaded this yesterday night and thought it was beautiful. But it wasn't running well on my computer? Is there a command like quake 3 for maxfps? or no? I found it odd that I wasn't playing it perfectly since I have an hd 7850. DO you have any ideas to why this might be?

Both by Id Software. But Quake and Doom are so different in gameplay.
Then again, Doom3 and Quake 4 are almost the same thing.

Both games uses the same engine (ID Tech 4),
but
Doom 3 was developed by ID Software while Quake 4 was done by Raven Software.

How come this game had u jump straight to shotgun, there was no pistol or anything like doom or quake 2?
No, but the shotgun wasn't as powerful compared to it's 2D counterpart, the Double barrel was stronger but slow, and you use nailguns, rockets and a lighting shooter

@tekakaroboy Simply download Dark Places. It's an optimized version of the game engine, but without the game itself. As you have the game, after extracting Dark Places anywhere just copy the folder "ID1" into the folder the "darkplaces.exe" is located. Start "darkplaces.exe" and you're already there.

7 years down the line, the QRP website is no more... The site is still up, but you can't even download it anymore. Time has told that the guy doesn't give a shit anymore.

Hmm a vanilla P100 wouldn't really play Quake 1 smoothly. Maybe in some areas of the maps, but on the opening skill selection map you're clocking in around 11fps. Quake ran at a solid 60fps with a P166, but was playable on a P133. Anything greater than a P200 is wasted in 320x200.
To play Quake in SVGA (640x480) with a 60fps frame rate you're needing a P3-733, or pretty much any Duron, Athlon CPU.
Any netbook, even the early Atom ones, would play Quake 1 in software very well.

Online multiplayer death match started with quake one but quake 3 specialized in it.
I like these new Image Packs, but they couldve updated the resolution of the enemy polygons. They still have that N64 blocky appearence. But the updated Image Packs and lighting effects are still awesome.
7 years later, there are plenty of high-poly models you can download. HD models for the zombie, knight, and death knight still do not exist, however.
i absolutely love these graphics however i think i'm just gonna keep using nquake (ezQuake client). I've tried playing using darkplaces with rygel's texture pack and my framerate is just too low to actually play this game correctly (strafe jumping etc...). If someone wants to prove me wrong and show me someone using darkplaces w/ rygel's texture pack soaring through the levels go ahead, otherwise i'm just gonna wait for Quake 5.
my computer may just be old though.

I should make a video of my modded Quake, and you will be blown away!! It brings my fairly decent PC (AMD Phenom X6 1100T 3.5GHz, Radeon 6970 2GB, 8GB RAM) to its knees!! Puts some serious load on both my CPU and GPU...
