I'm SO sorry about the FOX name mistake i made, for many years i thought i played James Mccloud , in ' 93 i played the Japanese version twice only. And when i played StarFox 64 the story made me think it was James, and somehow i kept thinking that way for more than 15 years :P

By each passing year I get more and more fustrated at Nintendo, they are sitting on some of the most iconic franchises ever but do they use them, nope, they could win this console war at ANY time they like but they only give us the same god-damn port of Super Mario, where's my Star Fox? where's my F-Zero? Kirby? where's my Metroid?
Insted of announcing a new game...you give us Cranky Kong for tropical freeze, yay -_-

I hear you. it's due to a lack of these gmes i didn't bother getting a wii last gen. Nintendo really seems intent on shooting itself in the foot by holding back the bulk of it's IPs. sure mario and zelda are good, but you need both quality AND quantity.
Star fox in particular is a franchise i've been hoping would get some attention. i love it, but there is still more that can be done with it both storyline wise and gameplay wise. At the very least i think they should have experimented with a short anime show or something to see how well it does>_>

64 killed a lot of the mystery, especially with James's story. I always like to imagine him being in another galaxy so that the next game would have the StarFox team rescue him. Given that the games still have that AU effect when they mention James, I don't see it as a distant possibility should Nintendo decide to pick up on it again.

Starfox was always a more serious thing to me. when they went with cute cartoon, I knew it was all over. the space was serious, the drama of galactic war was serious, the characters furries which is cute... but no harm. concepts like planetary invasion, death, loss of a parent, I mean... the game even teaches you the horrors of gambling! it never ends when you want it to, nor do you usually win, and lose out on getting to experience the whole of life by being trapped by it. thos game was a masterpiece.
These graphic choices to me, really captures the direction it should have developed into.

It's our favorite "series", even though we only really love the original! The sequel beta is pretty dang awesome, even if flawed. And SF64 was pretty ok, definitely a good game. In my honest opinion. This is brilliant. With the news of a new Star Fox game coming out in said many years time it makes me wonder what is going to happen. With the recent number of "Bad titles" (which I personally enjoyed) there have been many rumors going round that the Star Fox series will have a reboot and be more like Star Fox 64 though I think this is a mistake. A lot of people are blinded by nostalgia, Star Fox Assault is proof of this. For the most part Star Fox Assault followed the Star Fox 64 recipe and tried to put more emphasis on the all Range mode so that the long on rails sections didn't get too boring because whilst Star Fox 64 could be completed in around an hour, a fully fledged Star Fox game with story would become much longer and with a greater focus on character development and dialogue it would be very hard to keep such a highly intense form of gameplay interesting especially as players haven't actually got to shot the spaceships, in other words it would become like a park tour that lasts for a few hours.
I believe the series strongest point is the Original Star Fox for the SNES. What Star Fox was wasn't just a revolutionary display of hardware but a good game. What Star Fox 64 is, is a "okay" game with some nice tricks but compared to other games now, it doesn't really hold up in terms of content and visuals because its really is that simple now.
What I suggest is that the series would be rebooted around the first game. Why? because it is the essence of cool/awesome and doesn't try to be Grand, its already good enough, its in fact great and there's just something about it that never gets old, its a game and it doesn't try to be anything else.
The one thing that Nintendo and players forget is that Star Fox is a kids game (say what?) and that whats actually happening is that something really quite pure is getting made for older kids. What did the first games have? Energy, character and action. What did the later games have? lots of talking, very plain black environments/Linear level design, annoying enemies and a story that doesn't relate to newer generations of gamers as they weren't alive at the time to know who said characters are.
I think a simple remake of the game wouldn't be enough. Kids aren't stupid and pretty pictures don't really do that much for older gamers in terms of remakes. What the series does need is a reboot with a very similar setting, more story in a much more subtle way and better formed characters with slightly more realistic relations to each other.
I'm no one for scripts but I have an idea of how the story would work out.
    1. The Lylat System has been under attack for many years and to conquer the evil forces of Andross, the Conerian Army have been training some of the most gifted pilots ever with the Star Fox team being the tip of the Spear.
    2. Once trained, the Cornerian Army have to do or die. With each of the Star Fox members having custom built ships to suit their flying styles, The Star Fox team head out to push through the enemy lines, defeating Venoms special forces and get to Venom to stop the war at its core.
    3. Once they have reached Venom it turns out that to have such a huge force such as the whole Cornerian Army is pretty much impossible so the Star Fox team and some of the better pilots go to finish it alone with the Cornerian Army guarding the planet to try ensure that if the squads were to be defeated that Venoms army wouldn't suddenly destroy the entire galaxy.
    4. After some time on the planet. A power source is discovered to be the reason why the Venoms war machines continue to be built and so the team decide that they need to destroy the problem at its core.
    5. Star Fox goes in alone and takes on Andross on his own as the rest of the team have been locked out. With all means of contact gone, Star Fox fearfully takes on Andross and escapes within an inch of his life. Like all cheesy ending Andross's face can be seen and he says, "I will be back, Star Fox".
So yes, very much like the Star Fox 64 but you have to consider that Star Fox on snes ran by a similar formula.
I just have a few thoughts on what they could do to make the game better.
    1. Have Boss Battles, Star Wolf ETC.
    2. Have it so the Bosses go round messing things up in the first place, give them a reason to be there rather than have them chicken out until the last moment because they should otherwise be in the front lines to begin with.
    3. Do not remove any of the characters from the series and actually add the characters from Star Fox 2 as side characters. this includes keeping Krystal within the franchise as a character joins the characters part way through their trip.
    4. have it so that the player can unlock and play through the game as different characters and of course take different routes with the harder to unlock characters such as Krystal and the Star Wolf team having harder missions to complete.
    5. have it so there are different difficulty settings and even if different characters have harder routes don't make the difficulty spike too obvious as every character has to offer some sort of positive experience. in other words don't belittle players by making them think that Star Fox is the coolest one and then getting them to realize that they've been treat to the easiest part of the game and thus making Fox look bad.
    6. go back to the awesome music. Orchestra's are nice but it doesn't add too much to the dynamics of the game. it should be more energetic.
    7. When it comes to remaking the characters, try to retain elements of themselves and when it comes to Krystal try to make her seem less mature so that slightly edgy themes aren't expected to turn up later in the series.
Thanks for reading. I just had to get my thoughts written down somewhere. Now I can go to sleep.

I agree somewhat. I felt that Star Fox 64 introduced new modes without taking away from the core game. This was something Assault failed at, just like Rogue Squadron 3. It focused on the new concepts so much that there were not enough missions based on what I bought the game to do; fly an AR-Wing. By contrast, all range mode didn't take away from that in the least.

I still have the SNES cartridge, and the Nintendo promo poster from when I was really young. It holds a special place in my heart, and it saddened me to find that it's no longer considered "canon." I enjoyed 64 and the SSB series (the others seemed a bit... disjointed to me, with dinosaurs and such). I haven't really played the "newer" segments much, though I'm uncertain if they replicate the spirit contained in the original StarFox. Wonderful game and wonderful video.

Makes me cry about how utterly cool it. I played the '93 Super version and thoroughly enjoyed the 64 daughter of the father SNES version.
