    Crankshaft sensor symptoms [when faulty]:
    If your car is running roughly, the engine speed is 'hunting', the car won't start, won't reach high revs, lacks power or cuts out whilst driving, check to see if you have a faulty crankshaft position sensor (error code P0335) or camshaft position sensor (error code P0340).
    (Camshaft position sensors are the basically the same as crankshaft position sensors, but are easier to get to - 'Murphy's law' dictates that out of the two, the crankshaft sensor is the one that will fail, because that is the harder of the two jobs to do! If you need to replace your cam sensor, this video will help you too)

    Good advice Chris. It was an easy replacement on my Saab after cutting out only after a few miles of driving. It appears the sensor was working when cold but not when hot. Trouble is as the car coasted to a stop it threw up a Traction Control warning so made me think that was the problem initially. Doh!

I took it and have it diagnostics at a car dealer after the local auto shop miss up there diagnostics. I took the car to my mechanics because the car dealer is charging me $400 something for just replacing the sensor. I start researching myself and happen came across your CZcams. Good video but a tad misleading as far as saying "On any car". The crank sensors are mounted in quite a few places, at the flywheel end of the engine, at the front or pulley end of the engine. Some require removal of quite a few parts to get to it such as ones mounted under the timing belt covers. They are there somewhere and some are not quite so easy. I own a garage and have done enough of them on various vehicles.

    • @dalestump439
      @dalestump439 Pƙed 7 lety +3

      A bad crank sensor usually shuts the car down completely. I have seen them act up intermittently but eventually it will go bad. Usual cause is a no start condition. At times it will cause stalling and may be difficult to restart until it cools off. It won't cause any damage unless it were to cause a stall situation in traffic which would put you in harms way possibly. Glad to help Charles. I have my own shop and have changed dozens and dozens of crank sensors on various makes and models of cars. Some are easy and some are a royal PITA....lol

      It's hard to predict when it could go bad. I just did one in a 2005 Cavalier with the 2.2 4 cyl. and it was fairly easy. You need to remove the starter and it is right above it. I wouldn't plan any long trips until you get it replaced. I'm sorry but these aren't my videos, I just commented on it but am glad I could possibly help you.

      @christopher_barr  Pƙed 4 lety

      Hi Victoria, here is a very useful link with lots of relevant information: www.samarins.com/diagnose/p0341.html It’s worth checking the things in that article but I have also heard of unserviceable crankshaft sensors creating a spurious camshaft senso fault code. As the crank sensor is cheap and easy to replace you might want to put that onto your list of things to check / replace in your fault diagnosis & rectification. As with any fault finding, it’s a good idea to get as much information as you can to use as clues as to what the problem is and then make a list of things to check / replace starting with the easiest, quickest and cheapest things to go through first, before working down the list to the more complicated things. (I have seen people waste a lot of time & money trying to replace expensive components when something as simple as a bad connection or a blown fuse was the culprit). Time spent thinking and writing down possible causes and a priority list of how to go through the fault-finding process is always time well spent. Happy fixing! Chris

    hi.....I have a problem.
    I have a 2002 suzuki swift. i put it through a mot which it passed. i was told that the oil filter was leaking slightly so i asked them to do an oil change with new oil filter.
    about a week later, my car started playing up. it will start up in the morning but when i turn off the engine, the car wont start. it turns over but wont go. it died on me when i was driving, (close to home). after about half an hour...i try again and it starts. since the problems started soon after the mot and oil change, I checked the oil level and discovered the oil was 1 cm over the maximum on the dip stick. i drained the oil to just below the level. I changed the air filter and the plugs. this disnt solve the problem. I took the car back to the garage and said the oil wouldnt be the problem. he had the car over night.
    He sais there were no error codes, the sparking was fine and the fuel was coming through. he said it was probably the engine ignition module but wasnt sure. I didnt want to spend ÂŁ100 on a probably so I picked up another one (second hand) but the problem was still there. the chances of 2 amplifiers being faulty sounds quite low to me.
    Is it likely that the crank position sensor is at fault here? there were no error codes at the garage but i read that in older cars, they can sometimes not register. any ideas?

      It depends on the car - some you can, some you can't. If you do go under then use jackstands so the car can't fall on you. Happy fixing! 👍

    Hi Chris, what are the main difference between crankshaft symptoms and camshaft symptoms pls?
    I have a Ford focus 1.6 tdci 2009, it just started cutting off power on motorway or doing bend on roundabout.. But it starts immediately after ( never struggle to start after cutting off).
    No fault codes on computer, no lights on dash.
    Mechanic still can't find the problem. But online I read it could be camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor or fuel rail pressure sensor.
    Pls what is your opinion?
    And possible of where to locate these sensors on the Ford focus?

    Sadly in my 2000 Olds Intrigue this sensor is behind the starter, have to take starter out. And in reality honestly don't know what is wrong. Car ran fine Tues., Thurs. needed to go out, car dead. Battery is fine. Friend came over and hit the starter with hammer from underneath but nothing. He doesn't do anything electrical. Watched some other video and got sick to my stomach. That guy traced problem to PCM. I'm now petrified. Way to broke to have it towed and serviced in shop. Wish you were here near Detroit, Mi. Christopher. Love your personality.

    When the crankshaft sensor starts to go bad, it starts showing symptoms when it's cold. This is my own experience. You just can't find that information anywhere. You could easily think that there is a problem with the mixture ratio, although the crankshaft sensor may be the real culprit and may work well in warm weather, but at a certain degree of frost it starts to show symptoms.

    Thanks! But... Halfway through I realized, this wasn't a camshaft video...
    I searched camshaft... I got crankshaft... But you told me it's generally easier! So that's cool lol.
    I went to replace the water pump on Mom's 2000 mustang.
    Found it in horrible condition!
    Heater hose was bent all to he11.
    A bolt was broke off in there was half the problem to begin with.
    Somehow at that moment that alternator decided to go the rest of the way out.
    And when I decided this is getting over my head, I put it in the shop, where they found the bad camshaft sensor.
    I had figured some valves just needed cleaned.
    So a week long project, and putting it in the shop later, THIS is all I gotta do to get her car running normally again.
    I can live with that!
    They priced it at about $150.
    But I can get the part for 10-15 bucks.
    Probably gonna do it myself and save the thousand percent mark up
