- I have to say, I didn't expect The Owl House to actually explore the possibility of Luz struggling with her mental health following the events of season 2 finale, but I'm really happy that Thanks to Them subverted my expectations and surprised me in the best possible way!
It's nice to see a fully fleshed-out protagonist with believable struggles and an arc that is not only extremely relatable, but also very inspiring.

I mean it is a list of symptoms, but each one was thoughtfully incorporated into the story
Even before "Thanks to Them" aired, you'd be sensing a pattern in "Follies at the Coven Day Parade", "Reaching Out", and "Clouds on the Horizon". Namely Luz's tendencies to hide her issues.
Reaching out was by far my favorite episode until Hollow Mind, and even then it's close. I loved her development so much in that one and loved how much amity cares for her, as well as appreciating her father and letting him back into her life because she knows things can be worse

Belos didn't just waste his entire life. He wasted 5-10 entire lifetimes, and 5 dozen grimwalker lives. And hundreds of innocent lives over the years. And the attempted genocide of thousands of lives at once. And hundreds of Palismen.
Belos is a good role model. He didn't abandon his goal of making his empire an hegemon and getting rid of its ennemies. Sad that such a strong leader is vilanized.

It's so sad that Luz keeps secrets from others and blames herself for everything that has happened. It felt so deep to me when she started becoming depressed. She changed other people's lives for the better but not her own. By the end of the series, I really want Luz to forgive herself and go back to the goofy, happy-go-lucky girl she once was, I really miss that.
Edit: I know I shouldn't have put that last sentence because It would get rid of character development, but I was just tired of seeing Luz so depressed and I just wanted to see her happy again.
I hope you guys understand.
Luz will probably forgive herself but I don't see her going back into the happy-go-lucky girl we saw at the beginning of the series because that would make no sense character development wise and wouldn't make sense when she is still copping with her depression. I still miss that happy-go-lucky attitude because I felt like I was Luz at some point.

I hope we see her affect change back to how she was because if you pay attention they express less emotion with Luz's face during this episode (ie: scene with comforting hunter) then the rest of the show. I don't want her to revert to square one but I definitely want to see her bundle of ND joy energy again.

Luz's struggle was very well done in the series, and I'm so glad that she has a mother, close friends and an awesome girlfriend who's always there to be there for her when she's at her lowest.
This is such a cool video and honestly makes me realize how much work the crew truly put into developing these characters. I think one of my favorite things is seeing Luz go from being the 'Sun' to the 'Moon' and Amity go from being the 'Moon' to the 'Sun'

I hope Luz can overcome her problems in the last episodes. Here is the thing; with or without Luz's help, Belos would have found the Collector anyway and he used everyone to get what he wants.
Luz wasn't the only one who got tricked. If she can forgive herself, she'll be able to move forward. Her family and friends never hated her. Luz changed the Boiling Isles and her friends for the better. She did more good than bad. She needs to realize that.
While Luz try to help others, Belos was being selfish and he paid the price by losing his humanity. It was really Belos's fault not Luz.
Belos didn't lose his humanity. He never had any to begin with.

As someone who has dealt with depression, abuse, anxiety, and has adhd while being queer, this show is so important to me. It’s helped me explore myself and helped me deal better with everything I just listed and more.

In my opinion, they handled Luz's character so well! Every scene she was in really hit close to home for me, and her character development made me realise i'm not just a Amity kinnie so... that's fun 🙃

Great analysis video really amazing also I think given the fact that Manny seemed to have died when Luz was 7 or 8 I think it's a good possibility that when Luz found out she may lose another parental figure in Eda do to her cure which is very similar to a chronic illness it majorly motivated Luz to try and do something to not lose Eda like how she lost her dad.

That's very possible! In general, Luz is a very good kid and she doesn't give up on people easily. Losing her dad so young and having no friends for the majority of her life certainly contributed to that.

Not only have certain events had a part to play in breaking Luz's spirit a little but to add further insult to injury, her own hometown was just as guilty of that.
Sure, she may have helped things escalate by bringing fireworks and live snakes into school. But you heard the insults people said about her personality over the years back in Thanks to Them, right?

When you have that many people talking negatively about who you are, what you do or how you act; of course it will make you feel like you're worthless. This is why the Isles feels like a better home for Luz than Gravesfield, in my opinion. Sure...there's boiling rain, weird night critters, some of the people aren't the kindest of souls (COUGHBoschaCOUGHOdalia) and the governing system is more crooked than how it is in the real world.
But on the Isles; Luz gained a family that loved her (quirks and all,) made loads of loyal friends, found a girlfriend, became a trendsetter at Hexside for introducing Glyph Magic, became Grom Queen, learned how to play some of the Isles' most popular sports AND managed to outwit a witch-hunting tyrant (Belos.)
What exactly does the Human World have that could top any of THAT?!
I think Luz's story is a very good representation of how changing your surroundings can really help when it comes to issues like bullying. Sometimes you just have to remove yourself from the situation completely in order to start getting better. As a former victim of bullying I experienced it myself and changing my environment when I moved from middle school to high school was a huge help. Luz's environment in the Human Realm was hostile and encouraged this lack of acceptance she experienced and that made a lot of her issues so much worse than they had to be.

As someone who wasn’t really bullied I can’t relate to this very well fun fact about snake skin I red you should never pick it up with your bare hands because the skin can contain bacteria plus I’m not treating Luz like she’s a victim a she definitely had trouble understanding social ques and boundaries I imagine myself as a student in Luz’s school how would you react to some of the stuff she did is be a bit uncomfortable with some of it like bringing snakes to school and illegal fireworks to me the show wants just about Luz finding acceptance it was also her gaining a better grasp on social ques and learning to be more responsible and rein her impulses being quirky and weird isn’t a bad thing at all it’s only bad when your not respecting boundaries of others and making people really uncomfortable I’m sorry but I kinda sided with both the people of Gravesfield and Camila as Luz needed to change her outlook and find a balance I may be adhd but I’m not using my disability as a scapegoat in my experience high school was pretty ok and I had friends that come and go and got along with people in my classes.
Sorry if this sounds like me blaming Luz but this is just how I see it
@@garrettjackson1451 That's the thing, right? Luz isn't a bad kid- she's just a kid who doesn't understand the consequences of her actions. Rather than being berated for it, she should've been taught things like responsibility, impulse control and social cues the right way- with patience, compassion and understanding for her situation. Berating and yelling at someone- especially a child- does absolutely nothing to teach them, and it is absolutely not the same as 'tough love' or 'learning the hard way.'
@@Jotnarballs exactly but sometimes yelling and tough love can work same goes for learning the hard way as Luz and to learn the hard way herself a few times and she learned to control her impulses on her own
I felt for Luz so much during Thanks to Them. The show's creators portrayed her struggles and feelings so well and this was an excellent essay looking at that. I didn't even realise some of the connections you were able to make. Luz is definitely up there as one of my all time favourite characters.
this is crazy accurate. i immediately connected with luz in a way that I had with no other fictional character before, seeing as I'm a neurodivergent fiction-loving kid. when I started struggling with depression, I don't really think I knew what it was, and I pushed it down in favor of helping my family (who was also suffering from loss, actually). it was only after watching thanks to them that I realized the other half of WHY I connected with luz so much. thank you for bringing that into light ❤️
I connect with Luz because of similar interests but I can’t connect with her struggles to well because I never experienced loss of a parent but I’m still struggling on what I want to do with my own life

This is a fine analysis of Luz Noceda, as a sufferer myself I know the feeling of being alone, feeling invisible, that no one out there cares, but Luz does have people who care for her.

I would have loved to see even more, of course, but I think the team did brilliantly with what they had. It was very realistic, in my opinion. They showed Luz having ups and downs upon being in a safe space (home with mom and friends). They showed Luz still struggling, and her struggling especially in school (as it can be a very triggering and isolating environment especially for neurodivergent and queer individuals). She manages to get through the daytime and seeks to support her friends, feeling like she has to fix the situation, prioritizing them over herself, but when it comes to nighttime, she ends up struggling in crisis levels! Quite the accurate representation if I do say so myself. I am so glad that she has her radically accepting and loving Mama Camila, and her friends.

@@neurodivergentlily I know I mention it multiple times in the video, but honestly, shoutout for Dana Terrace and her team for still managing to tell such a solid story with the limited time they had! It's incredibly impressive.
And you're absolutely right and you actually reminded me that I completely forgot to mention Luz's problem with sleeping which is one of the most common symptoms reported by people struggling with mental health. A tad unrelated, and a bit long, but I just wanna put it out there (TW: mentions of suicide, self harm, alcoholism, etc.) I've found a lot of similarities between Luz and my own character, Gwendolyn Lightshade. Gwen is oftentimes a pretty depressed and depressing person, and she struggles to cope with it. Though she usually ends up resorting to comfort from things like self harm and drinking in excess. Which, if you ask my online sister, is shown often in our roleplays, as is the fact she always ends up blaming herself for the bad things that happen. She usually ends up talking about "I wish I didn't exist" or "I always cause problems! I'm pathetic!" and asking why whoever she may be talking to likes her so much. She has a similar problem as Luz in her backstory as well, but I'd say it's a bit more like Anne from Amphibia. She gets trapped in an unfamiliar world with no knowledge of how to get back, but instead of a cool magical world, she gets trapped in the human world and she's about 15 when this happens. She finds it fascinating but that ends quickly when she realizes she can't get back. She was also ridiculed in her world but instead for being a hybrid, which caused her to have several failed suicide attempts. She was ridiculed due to the fact hybrids are highly looked down on, especially since her parents were from feuding factions. This didn't stop in the human world though either, she skipped highschool and studied a lot about the human world, eventually going to college. Where her alcoholism started, she often got ridiculed by her teachers for it. Unlike Luz though, Her mother hated her but her father tried his best to love her. Though he was often at work because her mother would constantly spend all of his money and her half sister was always out with friends to avoid her step-mother. There's also a few of similarities to another version of Gwen I have and Luz, this one was an experiment though and doesn't know much about her past before that. She feels as though she causes too many problems, not being on one specific side of the war and feels like she shouldn't exist. Though she didn't turn to alcoholism, but just self harm, as has successfully committed suicide once. (She has, or rather, had, 3 lives. The first Gwen I talked about has 10)
Anyways I just wanted to share that because I thought a lot of what you said about Luz sounded familiar, then I looked at my own character and her problems and realized "Ohhh, that's why!"

Update: I now have a new OC named Amira, but there are still some similarities in the mental health aspect, just not when it comes to things like backstory and trauma. (I do still keep Gwen around for certain things and definitely not just cuz I'm super attached to her and there's also a thirty version of Gwen now too)

I actually totally didn't realize that this is depression even if I suffer from it myself... I felt that Luz was off in this episode but I couldn't entirely put my finder on it .. I was distracted by things like: what will her palisman be and how the episode would have looked like to all the scenes in the montage .. I am so sad that the decision can't be undone because we are missing so much great storys and healthy representation (the coming out, how to spot and handle depression, etc)

Watching a bit late, but
I'm just starting to realize just how much I relate to Luz and the way she learns
The last episode calls magic a language that Luz had learned, and her attachment to it reminded me very much of my own attachment to the written language that was created for Jak and Daxter - it's a basic substitution cypher, using symbols to represent letters from the English language, but it was very fun for me to learn. I even used that language to study in school as I taught myself to read it at the same time.
And seeing how passionate Luz is to learn and discover spells using the language she discovered just hit home for me, and I felt how hurt she was when she found that the language she learned had died with the titan

I have a potential theory for "The Owl House," could Luz (and humans in general) possibly be something of an amplifier for magic cast by witches? The reason I bring this up is because some of the most impressive feats (outside of Eda's) were performed with Luz either being directly involved or in close proximity to the spell being cast. Do you find this theory plausible or am I just finding something where there is nothing?
I think that would be interesting! Not sure if this is the direction the story is going, especially since TOH crew has so little time to actually wrap everything up, so I assume a lot of stuff had to be cut off, but I think you might be onto something here. I find it interesting that Luz and Belos are the only glyphs users we know about. They both discovered glyphs on their own and then mastered it independently. Belos even makes a remark at some point about how fast Luz is learning and implies the titan/Isles revealed the glyphs to Luz while he had to work hard to discover them.
I think it's fair to say that there might be something unique about humans and their relation to magic.

I relate so much with Luz because she’s canonically told to have ADHD or some other condition of that type. Watching this show made me feel like I was being part of it as I have struggles with ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, and cerebral palsy. I struggled with a lot of social isolation, and was considered a bit of a loner due to the fact that people didn’t know how to approach me.
As much as I hate the fact that the series is over and we didn’t get the 20 episode 3rd season that we absolutely deserved to see, I hope that with Bob Iger at the helm, we could potentially see this show take on more related projects such as graphic novels, spin off series, and more. The executives who were responsible for canceling this show should be ashamed of themselves for hurting this show’s fan base and going with the bogus claim that it didn’t fit the Disney brand.

If I had a nickel every time a series known for deconstructing its given genre psychologically broke down their main protagonist starting in the sixteenth episode of a season due to the actions of an antagonistic force, setting up a major shift in tone for the rest of the series while also shedding light on their inner mental issues in a starkly realistic manner, I'd have two nickels.
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

I got some reflecting to do, I don’t think that I’ll stop being a “parrot”.

I should have watched this one first as it seems we both saw Belos as a Racist which is why he was the perfect Antagonist in a place where everyone was accepting of everyone else regardless of their differences.
The way the story unfolds is wonderful and you can tell they did their research when writing the story. You're right as we see from Episode 1 where Luz is looking to for acceptance. Not a way to change which is what everyone wants her to do.
All the way to the end where she realizes she just wanted to be understood. During this time she goes through so many ups and downs trying to help everyone else but not herself.
I'm glad they wrote such a great character. And not just her but all of the character development was done with such care. You end up feeling a connection to nearly all the characters and wanting to help them in so many ways.
I hope they do something to bring back the Owl House. Whether it be a spin-off or anything.

Remember that these are just some statistics! While all of these elements increase your chances of depression, they don't mean that you are destined to suffer because of mental health issues. It's good to be aware that these factors exist and to practice self care as well as surround yourself with caring and supportive people. At the end of the day, though, everyone might end up struggling due to anxiety or depression at some point in their life which is why it's important to destigmatize these issues and keep spreading awareness about what to do when you or someone close to you is suffering.

Why bisexuality in particular though? Or is it just because it falls under the queer umbrella and can make life difficult overall? Or does it have to do with the fact that it’s so seldom talked about compared to other sexualities. There is practically no bi rep.
@@swordquillinc.5335 There has been studies proving that bisexual individuals are at a higher risk of struggling with their mental health than lesbian and gay people. It's speculated that it's because they experienca a lot of stigma both from straight people and also in LGBTQ+ spaces where biphobia can be quite common. If you google 'bisexual people mental health' you might find some of the results of these studies and articles on the topic :)
