Why Anne Boonchuy is the Best Disney Protagonist

  • When it comes to most shows like The Owl House or Gravity Falls for example, fans usually love the antagonists or other major characters as their favorite characters. However, with Amphibia, a much higher proportion of fans love the protagonist, Anne Boonchuy, as their favorite character. So why is Anne the exception?

    Season 1 was about getting Anne out of her own b1tchy and toxic habits. Season 2 was really about the growth of Anne's positive traits like her being able to make fast friends with people, take care of her younger frog-siblings, and do good by default. Season 3 is where the ugly ugly ugly hero in her was fully realized.

    Marcy might be my favorite character but Anne Boonchoy is the one I grew attached to more watching the show, I showed up late to the series by watching true colors. I wasn't aware of the show at the time until I heard the drama Disney pulled and I still felt emotional throughout the episode, so I took time to catch up and watch the rest of the series from season 1 to the rest of season 2. Marcy was a fun and enjoyable character but Anne won over my heart for who I want to become. Maybe someday I will

    I love Anne Boonchuy. I like her looks, her initial personality including her flaws, and the changes she goes through over the course of the series, both positive and negative. For the record, Marcy did technically survive her near death experience at the end of season 2, while Anne did die at the end of season 3, only to be brought back to life. I am glad Anne came back to life, but I honestly wish she didn't have to die to save Amphibia in the first place. I do think that Anne is a great Disney protagonist, but I don't know I can call her the best overall Disney protagonist, whether in shows, movies, or both. My personal favorite of the calamity trio is still Sasha.

  • @geraldquicktire8396
    @geraldquicktire8396 Před rokem +34

    While I may prefer Marcy, Anne is certainly one of the best characters in the show due to her redemption arc! She went from not caring about being responsible and manipulating others (a trait she most likely picked up during her initial "friendship" with Sasha) to nearly sacrificing her life to defeat the core and keep all of her friends and family safe. If that isn't character development, I don't know what is...
    Also, one thing I noticed is that Anne breaks away from the typical " Disney main character personality." Compared to other Disney Protagonists, who are usually seen as optimistic, cheerful, and full of energy (almost akin to Spongebob) she's more laid back, cool, way more sarcastic, and overall gives me more Mordecai and Rigby (from Regular Show) vibes. While I do like the other Disney protagonists (like Luz and Molly) it's actually refreshing to see a main character who isn't so bubbly and cheerful all the time.
    Great Video as always Marngel! Can't wait to see your next one!

    • @jessoliveiro8975
      @jessoliveiro8975 Před rokem +3

      She was definitely a refreshing change for the standard Disney series "super nice, optimistic and bubbly" female lead, that's what drew me into Amphibia (around True Colours), like nothing against Luz or Molly (I've only seen clips of the latter's show), but Anne feels the most...real to me. She's not an optimistic little go-getter or insanely happy go lucky. She starts off being insecure and kinda toxic, but there were hints from the very start that she'd grow from that mindset.
      I think it also boils down to the writing of the show and characters. Controversial (and I also know that TOH's run had to be shortened), but Amphibia's writing of both story and characters and pacing tops TOH in my opinion. I wasn't drawn in at the start because I assumed it was just another filtered show (especially Season 1) targeting a younger audience, but the way they wrote characters, none were put in a box, like "oh this one's bubbly and naive! This one's grumpy! This one's the mean girl with a sad backstory!", they had so much space to break these characters down because they weren't a specific character type and you don't feel a whiplash 180 when you see a different side to their character in a different scenario. And, like Gravity Falls, they forshadowed so much important info down the road just through little hints that you miss the first time, just ugh...sorry for rambling, but after so many lackluster shows with potential (*cough* SvtfoE), Amphibia is right up there with Gravity Falls in my books.

      @@jessoliveiro8975 No worries man, this was such an interesting take to read! While it did take me a while to get used to Amphibia (mainly cause I started watching TOH first and wasn't really too keen on this show) I really liked how Anne broke away from that character archetype and made her more of a flawed character. Glad I never watched Star Vs. sounded like a shitshow to me.

    • @jessoliveiro8975

      @@geraldquicktire8396 I watched TOH first too, that's why I didn't place much hope or interest in Amphibia at first, until all the drama went down (about hearing True Colours being leaked and how the episode's ending shocked people) and I had time to watch the characters from the start before TC was properly released in my country. Anne was definitely a refreshing character, I think it could be because she's a year or two older than Luz and Molly, so she couldn't have the same sort of personality without appearing immature (nothing against that sort of character at any age, but it's too commonly written and that writing can go downhill FAST if you don't care about your characters), and I loved that they didn't follow the formula and made the calamity trio different, hinted at the friendship toxicity and worked on it instead of ignoring it or downplaying the seriousness of it all (OG Proud Family, Penny's friends were trash but she still stuck by them for some weird reason, Anne cuts ties the second her limits were crossed).

      @@jessoliveiro8975 Couldn’t have said it better! I got into Amphibia around when Season 3A was releasing and once it too a break, I was able to enjoy the series fully! I also loved how Anne didn’t get a love interest and Matt pretty left it open if the girls were in a relationship or not, it’s so dang refreshing to see a main character not getting a love interest, it would have added wayyy too much drama (like Korra) and it would have taken me out of the show.

    • @jessoliveiro8975
      @jessoliveiro8975 Před rokem +3

      @@geraldquicktire8396 I nearly forgotten how (other than that Sprivy episode, and it was so darn cute) the show didn't waste 11-30 mins on a ship that would had torn the fandom apart and instead focused on the story and plot. I think shows like that are way more interesting because they are pretty rare, and that itself is refreshing. Big reason why I (and I think a lot of fans) grew to resent SvtfoE's last season, and controversial (again), but that's kinda why I stopped being as big into TOH as I was with Gravity Falls and Amphibia. Lumity is cute and all, but sometimes that's just the overall focus and it eats away at the bigger picture. Amphibia has a nice balance of potential ships but never letting the audience forget the plot and caring about the characters as individuals instead of just being part of their ship (that one episode where poor Gus was overshadowed by Lumity, fans outright saying they watched the episode solely for them).

    I agree. 1000000/1000000. I find Marcy more relatable to my personality, but I definitely think Anne is the best Disney protagonist. Her growth is so REAL and she feels like such a real person. The exact opposite however would be maybe Steven from SU. I love Steven Universe, but it has a lot of flaws. One of those is how good of a person Steven is for no real reason , like , yeah , his mom was great but at the end of the day , he’s still a human. He’s supposed to get mad , be a little annoying and sometimes even selfish , because thats every human. And Anne actually started out like all of those. Self centered, annoying , rude and more , yet , she definitely changed. And it wasn’t to the point where its like “Gosh , she’s gonna stay the same for the entire series” because while she was somewhat selfish , and kinda annoying at times , she grew. Even in the first episode we saw her little bit of growth and she went from ALL of that , to becoming someone who literally was willing to (and did) DIE if it meant protecting the places and people she loved. True development.

    I'd say my biggest gripe with Anne has to be that her character development and personality can get a bit inconsistent many times, mainly on the third season.
    On character development, despite having grown, the series is too reiterative about it and I would've wanted to it be more subtle, as well as not having many episodes on seasons 2 and 3 where she gets part of her old personality and keeps destroying places, annoy people, etc just for mischief like in Newtopia or the human world.
    And in personality... on one hand she sometimes cares a lot for her parents and her world, but on the other hand she can forget about it for very long instances.
    And don't get me started with how irrationally stoic Anne showed up on Season 3B
    -You get VERY hurt by Hop Pop's lie that even after you forgave him, you're still affected by it, get upset with him on the first temple and and both learn these things take time. That's nice
    -You turn into an emotional mess after apparently cutting out your relationship with a childhood friend, realizing how manipulative she was to you and getting strong trust issues, while also having the dilemma of "she was my best friend, she can change" on your mind and feeling terrible that, if it wasn't for Grime, she would've DIED, and that also lasts some time.
    OH, but the things you've experienced on TC, including:
    -Being betrayed by Sasha AGAIN and having to fight her again.
    -Realizing she was right about Andrias and that, maybe if you would've believed her he wouldn't have taken control of Amphibia
    -Being betrayed by Andrias and realizing he'll destroy that world in order to conquer YOURS
    -Realizing Marcy lied to you all along and that she was the one who got you there in the first place
    -Seeing Sprig almost getting killed
    -Awakening cool anime powers that may feel terrible after using them
    -And seeing with your own eyes how Andrias STABS Marcy, with a lot of certainty that's a mortal wound and that she's DEAD
    -And leaving to home without Sasha, who may run with the same destiny, as well as Wartwood.
    HOW EXACTLY DON'T YOU GET AN ENORMOUS EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN AFTER GETTING TO EARTH!?
    You've experienced SO MANY traumatic events that you shouldn't be able to even go home or stand up without causing a second big downpour out of your tears.
    I just don't get how her personality can have these kind of issues.

    y'know, whenever I think of what I love most of Amphibia, I always gravitate to the characters first and foremost, and the first character I think of is usually not Anne. At first glance Anne's not perfect, and she's not nearly as entertaining as the rest of the cast, or even her friends. But she is what brought it all together in the first place, and sacrificed herself, purely to protect everything, and everyone she built up. So after considering all that? Although if I had to choose Resident evil 8 did the hero turning to dust better. Mainly because Ethan stayed fucking dead. Basically in resident evil 8, Ethan is trying to find all of the pieces of his daughter so he can put her back together. He eventually succeeds in this, and defeats Mother Miranda, the person who wanted Ethan’s daughter Rose in the first place. However, due to the damage dealt to his body by Mother Miranda and the other 4 lords, he starts to calcify and turn to dust, but not before giving his daughter to Chris and sacrificing himself to finish off mother Miranda.
    I think what makes his turning to dust better is the consequence of his daughter getting to grow up, but she has to grow up without a father. He also stays dead, kinda, his consciousness is preserved he just doesn’t have a physical body and doesn’t get to see his daughter for 15+ years until she enters the database where his consciousness is. He gets to live, just without all the benefits of living.

    In a way, I think The Hardest Thing is the opposite sort of series finale for Amphibia that Dark Phoenix was for the First Class prequel cast in the same year as Amphibia. Dark Phoenix was an X-Men film that barely pretends to care about sharing any sort of continuity with the trilogies of X-Men films that take place before and after it, or else it would have done what Olivia and Yunan and The Hardest Thing did to un-kill Marcy and Anne. Dark Phoenix killed off the two X-Women who were already the most unlikable heroes in Dark Phoenix to begin, and had no plans on bringing them back which gives it real discontinuity with the original X-Men films when they were still alive. On the contrary, True Colors and The Hardest Thing, and most other Amphibia episodes before them, knew how to get us to like Marcy and Anne so we can feel sad for them when they die, and not feel cheapened when they un-die in Olivia and Yunan and once again, The Hardest Thing minutes later in the same episode.
