We are building a tiny houe, and this is one of my favorite DIYs of the
build! To save money, time, weight and even a little headroom, we
stained up our subfloor in the tiny house! You won't believe how
beautiful it is!
BLOG: ANA-WHITE.com/TINY - Jak na to + styl
Our cabin has plywood floors, also dark stained. One thing my Dad and I did just as something fun to do... used a black marker and a long piece of scrap and made 'plank lines'. We had no idea just how good it would come out. With the few area rugs we have down - we constantly have people commenting on how amazing the plank flooring is until we grin and tell them to take a closer look. Sometimes have to even tell them what they are looking for. LOL
Just something to consider, or if not, something for others to consider. Looks great guys!
+OptimusPryhme HA, love it!
OptimusPryhme our house came with stained plywood under the carpet. I told my husband I’d prefer the wood but he was like nah it’ll look cheap. I’m totally going to make plank lines. Maybe I can change his mind:)
OptimusPryhme great idea! I'm so doing the marker lines.
Would love to see some photo's
Do you have pictures
You'll never need to worry about cutting the wrong size, spin in circles or waste time trying to figure out what goes where... With ryan's detailed shed plans czcams.com/users/postUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH , it makes building sheds a breeze - just like putting lego bricks together! You'll be able to create the kind of shed, your neighbors and other woodworkers will secretly envy (while mumbling nice job under their breath).
I love this and have been considering working with my plywood sub-floor to save on expenses. The big tip I have taken away from this video is the 50/50 of stain and paint thinner. Thank you
whats the color of the stain?
I did this except I cut the plywood in 6" strips
so it would look like planks...
I would've cut it too
I love it! I was going to use linoleum to save on weight and footprint, but I didn't know that you didn't 'have to' have flooring onto subfloor. Thank you Jacob!
Love, love, love it ! I've been living with an unfinished ply wood floor trying to save enough money to have hardwood floors laid. I'm going to try this. Thanks for sharing. Great job ! :)
How did it come out
I was doing the same thing trying and save to change up the plywood to hardwood..i am so happy I came across this video.
OMG the floors look amazing. Ana you inspire a lot of people .
Have done a lot of painted floors in the past and have realised that the warmth of stein is timeless just like your floor.Thanks.
Floors look Awesome, what an excellent way to cut back on cost & wight and still have the beauty.
Ana & Jacob, I feel blessed I came a crossed your video segments. I am wanting to redo my 1993 5rh wheel and this has been perfect. Thank you!!!
Great!
That subfloor has some really nice grain patterns to it, looks awesome guys. A job well done!!
+GunsHarleysUSA Thank you!
I like it when they rip it to look like wide pine, and it helps it not to look like 4x8 sheets, so seems become a feature rather than an eyesore.
I like cutting them into planks my self. But your workmanship and the stain you used made the plain plywood look great! Thank you for sharing this video with us.
I really like the look. The half and half stain to turpentine really allowed the beauty of the wood grain to come through. Very nice, good choice.
Love this! Thank you for doing a video. I’m doing an Airbnb space, and wanted to do something else with the floors besides the carpet because I have a feeling that will get very stained over time. This is inexpensive and beautiful!
Wow! Was getting ready to stain plywood floors in a small guest cabin. Was worried about how it would look until your awesome video. Thank you!
This was an answered prayer. We are doing our own tiny house on 20 acres and have been out so much money preparing the land. We decided we needed to do something a bit cheaper for our flooring for now to hurry and get in it before winter. This is a beautiful option. Thanks for sharing.
Great!
The stained flooring is gorgeous and of course the covering makes it shine. Just perfect.!
Thank you!
Loveeeeeee it! This is the second video I've watched of people using plywood as flooring and that thought ran across my mind so I think I'm going to give it a try! Wish me luck!
I'm about to do this in my step daughter's room! So excited.
Flooring = Awesome. Great call! And nice build.
Thank you, thank you!! I didn't know what to do with my kitchen floor after tearing up old vinyl. I am going to do this. Not expensive, and looks so pretty!!! You rock!
AWESOME, you could cut into strips too to get a planked look if you desire a different look:)
I love it and the simplicity of it as well...
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing me and my husband are also thinking about doing this.
Turned out great! Very practical for the use intended.
+Jonathan Mutchler Yes it is, thanks!
love it! I'm in the process of building my container home and this video helped me a lot. thank you
GREAT!
Absolutely love this floor....so ALASKAN practical!
Glad u made this we pulled up our nasty old carpet and had the plywood under it and I actually suggested to just stain it instead of spending time and money on a hole new floor , my boyfriend said it wouldn't work . Cant wait to show him this 😂😂😂
AWESOME!
Great idea using thinner in the stain mix! I am doing the exact same floor idea in a shed, and put on stain... too dark.. so sanding all day, again to take some off. Will apply your idea tomorrow!
Thanks and best wishes.
Great choice on 50/50 stain plus, good use of natural floor designs being picked up by rug patterns. Very eye worthy! Easy to lay another topping should you ever decide you want a change in style! Love this series! Thx! .pgw/Oregon
+Patricia Walters Exactly, thanks for watching Patricia!
Genius idea. Practical and beautiful. Well thought out again ☆☆☆☆☆
+Shel Davenport Thanks!
So good! We are converting a school bus into a tiny home and so we decided to finish the subfloor! Can't wait to see how it turns out. Your floor looks great and we would love a similar color.
I’m also at this point, just burnt my Douglas fir plywood floor just wondering what is the best next step sealing it...cheers
Looks really good. Something to definitely consider.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
@@AnaWhiteDIY what stain did you mix with the paint thinner? I was thinking about a dark walnut.
Hey, If you ever get tired of the color stain? Try picking thin plywood sheets with equal pattern and glue down with Weld wood glue and try a different stain. You have unlimited colors and patterns also.
and don't forget to replace every two months as it warps, dents and layers peel apart as the temp and humidity changes and the weight put on normal floors tears it up.
There is very little strength in thinner sheets of plywood, with 1/4 inch consisting of one layer of veneer and two layers of glued wood byproducts which vary by manufacturer. Even 3/4" Plywood is iffy. Use birch made in China and your floor won't last one season.
A good alternative to solid sheets of plywood that are bound to warm and peel apart? Cut the plywood into planks and finish them with a good stain and clear coat. If one of the panels becomes damaged, you only need to replace that plank instead of a while 4×8 sheet of the stuff that they price as if it was a precious metal.
Just love it!
Great Idea on the floor. I was thinking of using 1/4" bamboo. Now I may go with just subfloor.
Great Savings Idea from Your Husband=Great Look. Congratulations to you Both, Ms. Ana White!
Thank you so much!
I love this floor. I didn't have money to tile my kitchen or install fancy flooring, so I added plywood like you did, but, filled in the nail holes and edges to make it as if it were one large piece of wood. Then in my kitchen I painted the classic black and white tiles. Since my space was so tiny, I made the square not really squares, kind of an Alice in Wonderland trick, making the kitchen look larger than what it was, an illusion.
Then in my living room I had the tile look as well.
But in my bedroom, I really painted it up, with square and a funny theme and surprising pink trim around the edges.
The only thing I battled with was polyurethane coatings. Which is the most durable? The oil based yellowed over time, bummer, but, the water based wore out faster. My house doubled as my workshop.
I love this idea! Thanks for sharing
Very Nice ♥️ My Husband And I Are Planning To Do A Big Project Alot Like This, Thanks For The Great Ideas ‼️
Thank you ! Short and to the point.
I love the tiny house. :) so I'm pulling up my carpet and I'm wanting to use my sub floor as the main floor so thank you for showing me what to do.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Looks great. It looks great because you used quality plywood, installed it by centering the sheets and your nailing pattern and by mixing the stain 50/50 with paint thinner gave it the perfect color and tone. It looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, we love it!
Looks amazing!!
So beautiful, just what i am going to do to my floors.
Love the way your floors came out! My grandparents built a "cabin" in north Idaho and my grandpas solution for flooring was to use the subfloor as well. He painted lines on it near some of the seams and put poly over the top. Floors lasted forever just fine. Including taking a use from 4 grandkids and 3 great grand kids and many many others coming in with wet, muddy shoes at times.
+Tracy Smith Love that!
It turned out very well. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Like all of your work, beautiful!
Love the floor! Thinking about doing it in my house! Thanks for the tip
+William Daniels Awesome!
It looks like what i think a tiny house floor should look like. The only thing i would have done different is to use the saw dust and some kind of filler to hide the small gaps in the plywood. then sanded and stained it.
Great idea! Thanks for watching:)
Looks great. keep it up. Thx for the videos, nice to follow your project and collect some ideas
+Chris Christensen Thanks for watching!
Great video! That floor looks awesome!
love that Bengal look flooring
like anything that cuts cost and looks great as well as easy to clean win, win, win...love it
Beautiful finish and a great choice of stain color.
Thank you!
Visually I think its gorgeous! Sure its plywood but that doesn't make it any less appealing to me! Its smart and I love it!
Thanks Gwynn, we like how it turned out!
I've always wondered what that would look like, looks really nice actually!
It looks way better than I thought it would, definitely a good idea.
We were surprised too! Glad you like the flooring!
I agree, it does look nice
+Miss Gaile Thank you!
Love this! Going to do this in my van
I've been looking for a simple solution to my floor cover dilemma.. and I've found it! 🎉 thank you!
Glad I could help!
Considering what you are using it for I think it turned out amazing! The pattern pops out!
+Charles Winter It is perfect for this application, thanks for watching!
it's great how you come up with form and function for your stuff it saves a lot of weight and it looks beautiful nice job.
Thank you!
I knew plywood floors could be beautiful. Plywood floors for my kitchen and master bathroom in my mobile home! Very budget friendly for my fixed income!!!
I love it. I going to steal this ideal when we build r tiny house. Thank you for sharing this with us.
+stilcrazychris It is perfect for the tiny house, thanks for watching!
I love it my next weekend project for spring
thank you. i just pulled up old carpet and i was wondering could i just stain this plywood and call it a day. yours look good and thats what i am going to do to mines. thanks again.
I like the floor. As you said, it makes so much more sense for a vacation and work place. I spent many years working with people building beach homes. Every one insisted on putting in expensive wood flooring --- then spent a huge amount of time and energy trying to police every man, woman, child, dog, and cat who walked in the door to keep them from tracking sand in. Seriously, sometimes it was like a constant litany: "Someone tracked sand in! Who tracked this sand in? You're going to ruin my beautiful floors! Now look at this mess I have to clean up!" And on and on.
What miserable vacations those people had, in their nice beach homes. Just a little common sense would have pointed towards a solution like yours, putting in floors that were inexpensive and easy to keep up. How much more fun that would have been for the whole family!
YES!
absolutely fabulous!! Looks great
+Speeding in progress Thank you!
Having a crude floor means having no stress with scratches or anything. This idea saves money and fuel by reduced weight also. Congratulations.
Thanks!
good choice Ana it looks really great and the grain just pops out good job.
+paul kennedy It really does, thanks for watching Paul!
Love the look.
I love this idea Anna ! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
The grain looks beautiful! I love wood. This was most definitely a good call. I just found you guys, I don't know how I missed you but glad to be a new subby and going to catch up on some of your older videos. Thanks, Tammie
Hi Tammie! Thank you for subscribing! We really appreciate it. Glad you found us. Thank you!
Beautiful !
Love this idea! and it looks great!
Thank you! Glad you like it!
I just love those first 2 seconds of the intro. I always replay it.
+Heavyboxes Thanks:)
+Heavyboxes LOL, me too. I do the exact same thing.
Very good idea for budget situations! Seems a lot easier than trying to put down vct!
Thanks, it worked out pretty good, and you can always do a finished floor later if you change your mind!
Love it!!!!! I just made a coffee table with plywood and plumbing pipe👍🏻
Plumbing pipe ? Do you have a picture 😀
awesome idea..looks great !
i have learn so much whith you guys thanks for sharing what you do!!big hug for you guys!!!
Thank you! And thank you for watching!
wow fantastic i just done this to my flooring best thing iv ever done many thanks guys :)
Awesome!
now i want to do this in my cabin. subscribed!
That's what I was thinking about doing at my cabin in Maine. So now I'm sure that's what I'll do. Thanks so much.
Great!
@@AnaWhiteDIY I also seen some others rip the plywood into boards and put those down. Kinda neet.
I thought it looked really neat. But I really loved the T-shirt: lattes lipstick lumber... Genius.
+j Tveit Thank you, you can shop on the website if you'd like:)
Love it. I was thinking of doing this, but all the other videos cut the plywood in planks, so I didn't know if I could do it by sheet. Also, no way to cut it in strips unless I pay someone. I think this looks much better, the woodgrain really shows.
Nicely done. At first I was no it's going to look cheap...but it has a purpose. And it grows on you....lol Nice work Ann and Jacob...
+Robert Evans Thanks, it was a gamble, but for this application it turned out great!
I think you..you should caulk joints with a brown water-based caulking this would be good for mopping but look's good
+Jim Cooney Great idea, thanks for watching!
Do that and see yourself replacing it every season where the floor contracts and expands. Especially with plywood, where there will be a degree of warping both as it dries out even more since being milled, as it moves with the weight transfer put upon it and the wood follows its grain as it twists from both being kiln dried and tension being released when cut into its current size.
Wood products sold in big box stores fly from the point where the tree is cut, through the milling process and dried too quickly in the kilns. Even then, these common building supply woods are still green and contain a fair bit of water when on the shelf, which is why you see so much of it warped and cupped to hell on the shelves.
Any caulking, sealing, or use of any product that binds to the wood and another surface will not last. Especially with a product such as silicone that also shrinks and receeds at its own rate. If you just have to do this for whatever reason, use acrylic sealant. If its for looks, for thin gaps just use wood filler and stain it the colour of your floor, or for large gaps, a piece of twine (non-synthetic) the size of any gaps to fill them and stain them the colour of your floor if needed. There should be videos on CZcams that show you how to do either properly.
I have even a better solution than that...
I used to have a business: Furniture Stripping and Refinishing...
So you could't SEE the caulking... I used watered down white glue...
poured it into the hole or whatever I needed to "Fill" on the wood... but first I had "SANDED" to get a little pile of sawdust... I mixed the sawdust over the water/glue (let it set) no need to mix... the sawdust will soak down into the glue...
Or you can mix the two together. Personally I like to just pile the sawdust over the glue and gently pat it down, after it dries (the next day) I sand it down... and it looks really good, because you've used the same wood as the wood you're using...
Works every time, and STAINS the same too.
Great idea!
That floor looks great! ....if I ever build a tiny home, that's exactly what I will do!
It's worked great for our use!
You guys are GREAT, tnx
im loving your floor!
Thank you!
Looks great
Talk about a great way to save money! Not to mention the fact that the figure in that ply wood is stunning make's it look like you have tiger stripe flooring. As long as it feel's good under bare feet it is a fantastic option to have available.
+Kirk Engnath Thanks Kirk!
It looks gorgeous!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Great decision guys! It looks great!
+Michael Ackerman Thanks!
Wow, that turned out really nice; I like it a lot!
+paulhett Thank you for following along!
I would have made the same decision on the floor. Looks great and you can always carpet later if you want. Thumbs up.
+OG Timbercraft Exactly, we love the options with it. Thanks for watching!
glad you chose a dark stain, looks great
+Robin Veysey Thanks!
Love it!!!!
Love it! Is there anything better than when you first put stain on something made of wood and see how it's going to look!? It just seems to come to life.
+Emily Kira It is very transforming, thanks for watching!
Beautiful!!
Thank you Susan!
