    For those asking, all municipalities can provide information about what is added to the water they process. Many also provide water test kits at a cost. Some health agencies or state/provincial offices (environment, health) also offer medical lab quality water test kits. I highly recommend people actually get a proper water test kit and test before and after filters are installed. Also let's all remember to lobby hard to have harmful additives and waste removed - animals and plants need clean water too. Having to worry about filtering #pharma products and #chloramines out of water is frustrating, as many people (and all other speices) can't afford the luxury of water filters.

    So happy to see this video. Ive been trying to get around my chloramine issue for a couple years now. I even purchased a whole home culligan softener for 4K. And a big blue 20 inch carbon block with another culligan carbon filter. But chloramine is still getting through. Just today i was researching Pentek filters and came across the chlorplus 10 inch. And thought to myself shit im just going to put this in a 10 inch housing unit right in my shower. And then i go and find this video of just that. So im glad to see this actually works. Thanks for the video. I plan on replacing the cartridge every 2 months or so.

    Hi John. From an old certified master plumber, Ive never thought of mixing the container and filter. PS if you pull the chrome cover off and grab the chrome goose neck with the handles at 12 and the jaws opening at 9 then grab the pipe in your left hand like you had it odds are 98% chance it will unscrew. good luck. The person whom installed it never heard of the old plumbing quote " tight enough to be water tight but easy enough to unscrew"

    You wrapped the threads in the wrong direction with the thread tape. In other words when you thread the male end of the nipple into the female. You want the end of the Teflon tape following the clock wise motion of the righty tighty. If the end of the tape is leading as you begin threading. It will want to bunch up and loosen the wrap on the threads and possibly leak or drip. Doesn't matter much on the shower side. The part that threads behind the wall surface could drip when you shower and in time may be a problem over time.

Also the filter can only filter 1000 Gallons water for Chloramine, though it can filter a lot more chlorine. Nice Video! Thanks for the tutorial. John, solid block cartridges generally cut the flow rate substantially vs granular (but are better), so how was your shower water flow rate affected? A tip to remove the shower arm from the wall: pull back the flange to expose the point at which the arm enters the fitting and spray some PB Blaster on that point (available at an auto parts store) and do that everyday for a week. Then the arm should come out.

Yes you put the teflon tape backwards on the threads (Apply to male pipe clockwise so it self tightens on the way in!) but this is doing something great! Thanks!!

    Also the flow was not effected as far as I can tell .
    I thought I might have to use a restrictor washer to allow a slower flow through
    the filter , but I don't see that being necessary .
    Also the ph did not seem to change , same as the pre filtered tub water.
    I would like to see close to neutral ph , but the water comes through the pipes
    higher than that , maybe 7.7- 8.0 .
    Still I am super pleased with this setup , and don't have a problem buying cartridges
    every 2 or 3 months if needed . Thanks John ,

      ***** No, trihalomethanes are a disinfection byproduct produced when chlorine reacts with organic mater. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia. The reason many areas are switching to chloramine is that it actually produces fewer trihalomethanes than chlorine and it also maintains a good residual through longs runs of pipe. The bad thing is that it is harder to remove. You need Catalytic Activated Carbon to remove chloramine. I called my city to see what they were using and they are still using chlorine.

    • @Houseofbears
      @Houseofbears Před 6 lety

      A standard berkey black has huge contact time and will take care of chloramine well. Not catalytic but huge contact time. At 3 gallons/minute or so in the shower you need a catalytic carbon such as Calgon Centaur Catalytic. You can buy this fill refillable cartridges, reduce envoronmental impact, even send the media back for reactivation and reuse in another product (centaur is 100% virgin, no reactivated carbon)

  • @michaelzorba1828
    @michaelzorba1828 Před 7 lety

    I did use your setup in the shower. The only problem is that I found out I need a ammonia filter too.
    Question:
    Does this remove the ammonia in the chloramine or just release it? I have heard you have to use a DI filter to remove the ammonia that is released-True?
    Answer:
    Yes it is true. The block breaks up the chloramine back into chlorine and two parts ammonia. The chlorine is retained by the block but you will still need to deal with the ammonia. DI (deionization) will capture the ammonium ion. A DI unit is also needed if the goal is to having or close to being 0ppm TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).

    Ive recently been reading a lot about water filters and unfortunately carbon filters like in the video rely on water running through slower to reduce contaminants. This is too fast to remove much from what I've read. I'm not say how I'm 100% correct, correct me if I'm wrong. As there's many opinions out there it gets confusing. I was interested in the vitamin c which changes the chlorine or chloramine to inactivate it. Or add a spoon on vitamin C powder to baths.

      I'm quite happy we don't have chloramine here in the part of UK. I live. Just chlorine and lower amounts than in the US.
      I've read quite a bit on vitamin c and believe it's very effective at neutralising both chlorine and chloramine. I've noticed s big difference using the Sonika vit c shower filter. No smell, better skin and hair, the steam smells and feels different. I only use the water for a few minutes anyway as I wet my body then turn off the shower as I lather up soap and then only step back under to rinse off.
      From what I read amongst the mind field of boggling info on filtering out pesticides, heavy metals etc - the filters don't have contact for long enough to filter out anything and many don't like warm/hot water. Many also only work in the beginning before becoming less effective and so on.
      Drinking water is just as important and for that I'm going to use a Berkey water filter to improve the water greatly.

    hi
    I installed this setup and everyone noticed the difference. My problem is the filters get clogged within a week or two slowing down the flow and needing replacement. Do you experience this? Any ideas on how to clean them or is there a better option. Also about how many showers does 2000 gallons cover. And what about filtering the fluoride?

      use a 5 micron sediment filter with a similar canister.

    Anyone tried this? Or any updates? Seems theres no good shower filter on the market or it costs $100 per month to replace the filters since they lose effectiveness quickly.

    Anyone have experience using empty filter housings and mixing their own media? I'm interested in additionally adding ResinTech SIR-900 to remove fluoride arsenic, as well as other media components. I'm looking for guidance from those who have done this, their recommendations, things to avoid, suggested media, sources for bulk media, etc. This could apply to drinking water filters, but ones for showers may be trickier as some empty cartridges only are rated to 125F and similar, so looking for these specifically. Bonus if gaskets and o-rings are easily replaced.

    Just want to say that this system works so well that I actually use my shower water for drinking over my Pur or Brita. The taste is way better, and there is a noticeable reduction in the chlorine in the air when i shower. Yeah it only costs about 50 bucks and works infinitely better than the 75 dollar brand name filters. They just want profit, go figure.
    Oh, and the life on the filter is rated at 50,000 gallons. I still change it every few months though. Tip: remove the paper from around the carbon block its just going to get dirty and moldy over time.

    Does kdf remove chloramine? I heard it doesnt. If i have to purchase a shower it has to have the kdf.

    I thought you will do it yourself, the filter I mean. But you just bought one. Well two actually :).
    Thanks anyway. I recently started using a filter for drinking water. Someday I might put one on the shower too. We shall see :).

    Thank you for the video. I made the exact same unit but had to take off the sprite filter as it restricts the water alot. Any new suggestions on different filters you might have used by now with better water flow?

    Great video! I’m not sure how comfortable I’d feel putting all of that weight on that little water pipe in the wall though.

    The pentek filter on amazon now says it's only rated to 125 degrees, not 180 degrees like the filter in the vid says. That's the filter from the link you provided. Google shows that the average shower temp is 105 degrees, so the filter should be ok as long as you keep the water temp down when you shower.

    • @laredotech
      @laredotech Před 8 lety

      put it before the water heater and you won't have to worry about the temp and how it loos on your shower

    • @laredotech
      @laredotech Před 8 lety

      I have a water valve before and after the filter. Close the main water valve and bleed off the pressure in your water heater before you work on it. The pressure drops a bit, but its not that bad.

    i haven't been able to find an update or comment about how long the filter lasts...? Could you update us?

    • @arneolson7114
      @arneolson7114 Před 8 lety

      +Stephanie Cork filters last different depending on how may people use the shower and the amount of sediments in the water itself....if you see mildew growing it's time for a change or if your soap is not lathering a lot or your hair is limp and has no body....test kits for chlorine are maybe 20$ if chlorine i present it's time......generally 6 months to a year....with chloramines less maybe 6 months

      I still haven't changed my filter. It's still working fine I guess for me I smell chlorine and my hair becomes limp ...also mold grows inside the casing and on the shower walls when it's time for a change . I also have a chlorine test kit. There is a way to check for chloramines too using ph strips I believe

    • @laredotech
      @laredotech Před 8 lety

      +Arne Olson use a total and free chlorine test strips. if you dont have similar reaults then it means that the filter is no longer working (both should be at zero. as per manufacturers info, it says that you will get 1000 gallons at 1gpm. it mainly depends on your tds. using a 5 micron sediment filter and a 5 micron carbon filter would increase its life. i would put that setup before your water heater and not in shower lol...
