At the end of the episode you see Cobb being driven away sitting in the back of a Jeep; probably to the stockade. He was Regular Army; had served in North Africa while Easy would have still been training at Toccoa. I'm unsure when he joined them, but he is seen with Liebgott & Shifty Powers (overheard by Sgt, Lipton) discussing Sobel. He was hit in the plane on D-Day and was clearly struggling (at least as portrayed in the episode) during Market Garden. In this ep he was drunk; insubordinate and refused direct orders from a Lieutenant (not Lt. Jones) who was not portrayed in the series. He received a disnonourable discharged. After that I do not know. Allegedly Col. Sink said "you should have shot the sonuvabitch". I can only guess what was happening to him, but to end his service like that feels so sad, kerk

As far as Sink, his daughter in later years commented that he was just passing the orders down the line just as Winters had done the first time, and that he knew Winters never sent the men across the second time.

Supposedly Nixon shared a bottle of whiskey w/ Col Sink on the night the second patrol was supposed to happen. Sink went to bed & slept soundly while Nixon typed up a bogus report stating no prisoners were found, & Sink was none the wiser.

I don't know if you noticed that the soldier who was drunk was riding away in a jeep at the end. He was with MPs because he was under arrest. He went through even more battles than what is shown in this series, but being drunk is not acceptable.

Webster could not voluntarily come back to Easy Co,he had been sent back to a hospital in England,And in reality Easy was glad to have him back

The documentary is worth watching. It’s basically extended footage with the vets. Some of it is a repeat of what you see at the beginning of the episodes, but most of it is new content, and gives some additional context to the things the men are talking about at the start of each episode.

I cannot speak for this generation of heroes any more than you can. But I don’t think you should feel guilty of living a safe, honest and gentle life (i.e. a bit sheltered, but free to think freely and to be compassionate). That is exactly what I think they fought to defend! I think those who suffered and died would have had some comfort, in their worst moments, knowing their sacrifices made you (and I, and all of us they protected) are a bit safer, freer and happier. I also make the hypothesis that the pain we feel watching these shows grants us a little bit of insight and understanding of what they went through would comfort them - in that we can understand (a little bit) what they went through, and what they sacrificed! Great reaction vid, enjoy your insights 😊.

Major is the fourth highest officer rank. It's also the first of the senior officer ranks. Majors are usually staff officers, though there are times when they will have command of a company.

I look forward to the last two, but i do hope you watch We Stand Alone Together afterwards with us. It really brings the whole series together nicely and is the perfect cornerstone for the series

There are also some great podcasts, a few by Ron Livingston about the training the actors had to go through for their roles.
      Y'all be safe.

Old Army officer here, for future reference the ranks are 2nd LT, 1st LT, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, then the generals, the way they teach in the Army to help remember is "be my little general", so Brigadier General (one star), Major General (2 star) Lieutenant General (3 star) and General (4 star) and very rarely, General of the Army (5 star). The 5 star rank is only used in wartime.

'oh why is he doing this'. The portrayal of Webster is one of the most unfortunate errors in this show. I'm convinced of that. This is a clear case of Hollywood taking over, instead of using facts. Webster was warmly welcomed back, and many men were grateful he that he didn't have to endure Bastogne. He was actually shocked when he got back, seeing so many men he knew that were gone, he almost wept. But you don't get any of that reality in this episode. I know that you can only react to what the writers show you, it's just sad, they didn't show you the truth in this one. Webster didn't even go on this patrol, he was manning a machine gun covering their withdrawal. I think it was Forest Guth that was the translator on this patrol, but he isn't even mentioned in this entire series.
As for how hard this is to watch, it is hard. I agree with you. But what they did, and many many others did that are not portrayed in this series, deserve my attention to it. Do I cry? Hell yes, but at the very least, they deserve some of my tears.
You are a tender person, you have empathy, have some tissues for the next episode, it's the hardest one.

I think it would have been difficult to include him without including his ability to customize the trigger system in an M-1 Garand to make it fully automatic. Integrating that into the narrative would have been difficult, which is a shame, because many Easy Co. guys loved their “Guth Specials.”

    • @FrenchieQc
      @FrenchieQc Před 5 měsíci +1

The only time Guth appears in the show is in the opening interviews in Ep8. He had initially been written into the show, his special uniform with plenty of pockets had even been created, but I think I read somewhere that someone was worried that his name was ressembling Forrest Gump too much. Which is kinda silly in my opinion.

The Battle of the Bulge was the bloodiest engagement for the US in WWII, including all branches of service in every theater of the War. 10% of all US casualties were from the Bulge.

Good observation. No matter the group dynamic, everyone needs to contribute. The military definitely instills that. You may not be as good at a specific task, but there is something everyone can do.

Winters and Nix got all the alcohol they could get and got all the commanding officers drunk so the next morning they were all hung over and just assumed the mission had commenced and that they had been too drunk to go and see

Tom Hanks even enlisted his own son into the War, that's commitment...This is when Winters essentially "Dad arms" and protects his men of Easy Company in anyway he can, even by lying to command. I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...

That generation wasn't big into touchy feely, and weren't much for apologies either, but they were absolutely algergic to alibis and excuses. Do, or do not. Put up or shut up. That was it. If you had their word, you were generally good.

For what its worth re: nudity, the real men, old by then & from a time it was considered inappropriate & immodest, likely've found such a depiction of themselves embarrassing & more so for their wives, children & grandchildren, families ect to see their Dad, grandpa ect. At least, knowing my uncles who served in WWII, that'd be the case.
Your reactions are very thoughtful & insighful. TY
