Bill Guarnere and Joe Toye were great friends throughout life. Now that both are clearly out of the war, it is not a spoiler to say they both lived long lives. They lost opposite legs and had an annual tradition to go buy a pair of shoes together one still had a left foot, the other a right.
Bill lived a very long life and was around to advise the actor playing him and visited during filming. If you remember in episode four when Randleman returns, Bill says “I don’t know whether to slap ya, kiss ya or salute ya”. The real Bill was there the day they filmed that episode and told the writers what he said and they immediately said “well that’s going in!”

He ran much further and when he decided to do it he immediately accepted he would not make it all the way there and back but the success of the action depended on at least getting there. The fact that he didn't shoot anyone while running through the lines probably saved his life because if someone is shooting at you and someone else runs past you're less likely to focus on that person because they are not directly threatening you.

Spiers was the real deal. There is a biography called, Fierce Valor. It is Spiers. It is well worth the read. He was incredible. In this war. And in Korea. And in South East Asia. And returned to Germany to head up Spandau Prison.
Yes he killed those prisoners. He and his fellow troops were right in the middle of all the German groups! No place to send prisoners. Yes he killed one of his own men... in self defense. His own troops defended him when the event was checked into. He was a great leader.
Speaking of leaders... you are doing a great job of leading the viewing of this program. I'm really glad I discovered your channel.
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.

Shifty’s shot that got the sniper in Foy was about half-again the distance shown. After the assault was over, he went to check on the sniper with Earl “One-Lung” McLung and Popeye Wynn, who he actually knew before they enlisted, and Shifty had hit the sniper between the eyes. Popeye remembered telling One-Lung, “It really doesn’t pay to be shooting at Shifty when he’s holding a rifle.”

    @va3svd Před 5 měsíci +7

So, here’s the real story with Speirs and the PoWs in Normandy. Malarkey was not there, it didn’t take place there, it didn’t involve Malarkey’s neighbour, nor was anyone from Easy there. Consider that scene in the series just fodder for the rumour mill, which is all it’s there for.
Speirs and two soldiers from Dog Company were trying to orient themselves after they landed, but didn’t see any definitive placemarkers. Then they heard the hobnail boots along the road they were on. They snuck into a ditch, and three German soldiers walked right past them and the Germans didn’t see them. They then jumped out of the ditch and beat the Germans *with their fists* so badly they surrendered. They interrogated them until they got their bearings, and the other two guys were prepared to bring them to their rally point, but Speirs told them that they couldn’t take the prisoners with them. They gave them each a cigarette (not Speirs, who didn’t smoke and almost never drank), and they all shot them.
This was obviously a war crime by the letter of the law, but tactically Speirs has a point. They would have slowed them down, made too much noise and endangered all of them, there was no guarantee of even having the means of securing prisoners then, and the laws of war were written with traditional infantry in mind, not scattered paratroopers. And, I hate to say it, but three armed dudes on high ground getting their asses kicked and manually disarmed in a brawl were unlikely to survive the war anyway. You can decide whether or not this makes you love or hate Speirs for yourself.
You’ll notice the usual reaction from the men. Penkala in episode 3 says because he took the last 105mm gun on Brecourt Manor effectively single-handedly, dodging machine gun fire “like a maniac”, he doesn’t care about the other stuff. Lipton says in the church that the men “don’t care about the stories” because they’re too busy being glad that they “have a good leader again”. (Lipton flat-out adored Speirs IRL, even if he did find him difficult to figure out.)
You can make your own moral judgment about Speirs. There’s a lot of grey in this topic, including the fact that one of the first things Speirs and other paratroopers would have seen once they landed was the fact that the Germans had killed their guys instead of taking them prisoner (guys stuck helplessly in trees or on buildings were used for target practice by the Germans). Also, Speirs was not in the greatest mood when they landed. He had been transferred right before the invasion from Charlie Company in 1st battalion to Dog Company because the battalion CO was a southerner and disliked Speirs who grew up in Boston. So he felt like an outsider and that he had something to prove.
My own take is that I am perfectly comfortable with shooting those three prisoners. I am more concerned with these soldiers in E Coy than I am with Kraut prisoners. There are some other things he did in other spots, like cutting down a few unarmed Germans who were going to surrender before they had the opportunity to that I am more uncomfortable with, but the reality is that Speirs’ high-end lethality was only used to keep his men alive. Even Winters, who could be critical about Speirs in hindsight for this, concluded that he was a great combat leader and kept losses down for the Easy guys. And that’s all I frankly care about.

Great Review. I am always happy when i see a younger person watching and learning about the series, and about what these men did. The run that Spiers made was even more impressive in real life than what was shown here. I company was attacking from the other side of town and their attack had to be coordianted with Easy Company otherwise they might wind up shooting at each other. Just after Spires took over they lost radio contact with I company. So Spiers took it upon himself to run through the town find I company relate Easy position to them and in his words that he used with the I company officer he found "Don't F***ing Shoot my men". THen he ran back. IN the show it looks like its only a couple of blocks in reality he had to run 3/4 of mile each way so imagine running 1.5 miles under fire from all directions the entire way. In an interview later in his life he admited that he fully expected to die while doing that, but it was his job to lead and to the best of his ability protect his men so that is what he was going to do. It goes back to the line he had in episode 3 when he was speaking with Blythe. "You need to accept the fact you already dead". He was going to do his job whatever the cost.
    Keep up the great work

When yer done, History Hacks just released all 5 plus hours of the famous cast zoom from the Pandemic, it's a wonderful conversation with many of the cast, your guy Matthew Settle(Speirs) joins in while on a bicycle ride......
There is also many hours of stuff from the WW2 symposium in New Orleans summer of 22.
I love following the actors in the show and the parrellels to the soldiers. Go down the castist and find some of the projects they've done over the years. Your boy Luz was in Justified, Muck is in Supernatural, Johnny Martin directed the Elton John flick and took over the queen flick. Sisk directed Boiling Point and was in a bit role in Chernobyl. Lots of rabbit holes to go down!

Winters said Spiers was one of the most cruel men he ever knew, but in war, you needed cruel men. Yes, Spiers shot some prisoners, so did a lot of men on D-Day. They didn't have the men to guard them or the facilities to keep them in. So they didn't have any choice. A lot of that happened on both sides that day. Spiers also cared a lot about his men.
Yeah, I like Spiers, I don't think I have a crush on him, lol. I do have a t-shirt that's dedicated to him. It's a black T and says, Lt. Spiers, Last Stop Smoke Shop, and has the image of a Thompson submachine gun on it.

A significantly higher percentage of German artillery rounds were duds, especially towards the end of the war when factory foremen just wanted to make sure they were shipping their quotas and spent less time on quality control. A lot of the rounds were made in concentration camps and the workers there were malnourished and weak, leading to imperfections and they would also deliberately sabotage as many rounds as they could as a way of helping the allies. If they were discovered doing it they would be killed so it was a very different kind of bravery they showed.

Just like almost everyone else who watches BoB, you find yourself getting connected emotionally to the men of Easy Co. We just can't help ourselves, and one of the main reasons is that you follow these men over 10 parts (and not just as a one off film that might last for 2 hours) and you can't help but get to know these men and you feel that they are part of you. They really do get inside your head. One thing I would suggest for you do is, watch this again and you will then be able to pick up more names earlier in the series who you get to know later who are there all the way through the series and be able to follow their stories better/closer. Men like Sisk, Webster, Liebgott, Moore, Muck and Penkala. It is so easy to overlook them in small parts earlier in the series. A good case in point is Blythe who is out of the series quite early. He is seen on the ship next to Grant while Sobel narrates the letter he wrote to their families as they are about to leave New York..

The thing to remember about Spears and prisoners is that the 101st was an attack unit and they didn't have time or the manpower available to deal with prisoners. Spears was following orders even though the idea of shooting prisoners is appalling. My godfather was in the 101st and I had the honor and privilege of watching this series with him. He didn't open up with everyone about his time in the 101st, but I will always cherish the fact that he did with me.

Before the Dyke apologist shows up, and he will, I have something to say. The men of Easy hated Sobel, but they credited him with the training that helped them in battle. So much so that they repeatedly invited him to attend reunions. On the other hand, I have never heard a good word said by an Easy man in defense of Dyke. Yes, he won medals, and maybe he was even a brave man, but I will believe the men of Easy about how worthless he was as a leader.
