"maybe Spears should give Dyke a cigarette"
literally made me chuckle
Spears is a Rough Tough Cream Puff. He's a real sweet heart.
As a veteran, I want to thank you for your sincere reactions and involvement in this series. I would truly still today, after almost 30 years retired, take a bullet for any in my band of brothers!
What no one in Easy learned until long after the war -- and by that I mean nearly 40 years after the war -- is that very early in this action, Norman Dyke was shot twice in the chest. The fact that he was bundled under heavy, dark-colored clothing kept anyone from seeing him bleeding. While he wasn't the best combat leader, he wasn't a coward (he was, in fact, an awarded and recognized war hero with two Bronze Stars for valor under his belt). The reason he became incoherent and fell apart was because he was in pain and was rapidly losing blood.
He was evacuated to a regimental aid station and only there did they find out that he was wounded. By that time, Winters had permanently relieved him of command under the assumption that he had simply fell apart. Which is fair enough, as Spiers was a superior commander. But Dyke is remembered unfairly in this show.
"Maybe Spiers should give Dike a fucking cigarette" lol that would have been nice though.
"Maybe Speirs should give Dike a cigarette." Thank you for this.
My grandfather parachuted in on Normandy with the 82nd airborne. I am really glad to see you watching this series. I hope to see the rest of your band of brothers series.
You're so immediately likeable and relateable in these! So happy that you decided to watch my favorite miniseries of all time. I always wished the series was longer, but now I wish it was longer so you'd have more to react to! Lol
There are no bad episodes in this series, just great and even greater. For me this competes with Ep. 9 "Why we fight" as the most emotional of the episodes, though for different reasons. The horrors of the repeated artillery barrages and gruesome casualties with it, mixed with the sacrifice for and dedication to their friends, and especially (for me) the inspirational, insanely reckless courage of Spiers, all combine to sum up why not just these men but SO MANY men from that war are so honored and respected. It says nothing negative about soldiers today to acknowledge that there was indeed something unique about that generation.
Oh, and in-the-moment reactions is one thing, but it does take time to digest and reflect on individual episodes to form deeper opinions. It might be an idea to follow up the last episode with one more reaction vid (or more if needed) that recaps all the episodes and then provide your reaction to the series as a whole.
You better have every tissue available for “Why We Fight.”
Umm yeah episode 9 is fucking rough. I don't cry in things but that one had me crying my eyes out.
It was the toughest episode for me to watch. Had to pause it a few times then come back to it.
Warren 'Skip' Muck, one of the two fellas killed just outside Foy when a German arty round hit their foxhole (night scene, George Luz is trying to crawl to the foxhole), was from Tonawanda, NY, which is in my neck of the woods. I'm working on a feature page for him for one of my websites, but kinda stalled on it. I think this has motivated me to get back to it...
I love how you offer commentary at the end of these. It shows that you're actually paying attention.
Oh, and your 'messy' hair isn't messy... it's real. Looks AOK by me... =)
I like this format, the bigger set piece moments can get more attention this way, and the little moments can be included too. I laughed at the 'maybe Spiers should give Dike a cigarette' comment. Spiers running through the town like Captain America was unexpected the first time I saw it, and still is a huge moment today, it's great to see Easy company get another badass to lead them. Mostly I just really like seeing someone watch a show I enjoy so much for the first time. As always, looking forward to next episode.
4:24 "Maybe Speirs should give Dike a fuc*ing cigarette". Made my day :)
Your reactions to BOB are both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.
That church scene is one of the best moments of the series. Keep the extended reactions coming... the longer the better. Episodes 8, 9, and 10 are all fantastic. Just be ready for the power of "Why We Fight" (ep 9). It's what solidifies this series as the greatest mini-series of all time.
I love this series, but there are some serious inaccuracies here in regards to Lt. Dike. He was actually not as incompetent as portrayed here. What actually happened is he was wounded while he and his platoon were advancing on the town and that's what was causing him to freak out. That's why Winters sent in Spiers to relieve him. Dike had also been awarded two bronze stars for acts of valor. One during operation Market Garden where he successfully led groups of paratroopers in the defense of a key road junction that was a part of the Einhoven to Arnhem supply route. The other he got in Bastogne for personally dragging three wounded soldiers out of an exposed area of the woods that was under enemy fire. Compared to other E-company commanders, yes he was incompetent, but not to the extent that the show portrays.
He was also a candidate for the medal of honor. He clearly wasn't a bad soldier, just a bad leader.
"Maybe Speirs should give Dike a fuckin' cigarette." All-time classic reaction. Thanks!
I've heard interviews from surviving veterans from that battle. Forty years later, and when they find themselves in a cold winter day, they can still remember the bitter cold from there.
I've watched this series all the way through several times but watching your reactions makes me feel like I'm watching it for the first time all over again. The feelings, the tears. All of it. Absolutely wonderful videos, Juliette.
I love this reaction series gurl! You get so emotional that it makes me just want to hug you, I feel like I'm watching it for the first time when I watch these videos🙈😍
I am a bit late to this reaction but I was listening to a podcast recently that included the actor who played Guarnere - Frank John Hughes. He said that around the time of filming this episode the real Lipton visited the set and so Frank asked him for details about what he experienced when he first arrived at the scene where Bill and Toye had lost their legs. Lip said to call him when he got back to his hotel, so Frank called him and he started tapping on the receiver of the phone. Frank asked what he was doing and Lip told him that this was the pattern that Guarnere’s leg was twitching when he found him. So the production rigged up his injured leg in the scene to twitch and gave Frank the controls so he could make the leg twitch in the pattern that Lip had demonstrated to him. Just one of many stories of how the veterans helped those working on the show give the series authenticity.
Just came across your channel, and loving all the reactions to an absolutely amazing show, and even if it's now 2 years old, I can't help but add my own bit of history to this episode. George Luz did not actually witness Muck and Penkala's death, he was going to his foxhole when the artillery started and saw Muck and Penkala in their foxhole, they told him to get in but he declined and said he'd find his own foxhole. He accidentally ran into D Company's line while dodging artillery, and dove into the foxhole of D Company's radio man...a dud artillery shell did land right next to them, and the other radio man, who had never smoked, had his first cigarette that night. He said the next morning he was reporting back to the line and walked past Muck and Penkala's foxhole, he could tell it had taken a direct hit, he jumped in and dug through the dirt, he said he found a shredded sleeping bag, and a few tiny pieces of someone, and that was all. One of the more intense moments in the show.
I love your reactions. Very sincere and honest. This series is one of my favorites. Thank you so much for posting these episodes.
Thanks so much. I’m a big fan of reactions myself and there’s nothing worse than insincerity. Such a wonderful
episode.
This is an extremely stressful episode.
I remember the first time I ever saw it, especially coming on the heels of the Bastogne episode, it felt overwhelmingly oppressive. If watching 2 hours of this in the warmth and safety of my home was that emotionally taxing, I can’t imagine weeks of this in the freezing cold, hiding from artillery shells.
Your reactions are bursting with empathy. You're a really lovely person, Juliette.
Thanks for reacting to this series! Your the only one that I know that is reacting to these episodes. It’s not easy to watch but it makes you want to watch in a way because you want these people to succeed.
Artillery will reduce the strongest of men to weeping children laying on the ground crying for their Mama. Allied soldiers said they feared German 88mm artillery more than any other weapon during WW2. During the Battle Of The Bulge, the German artillery bounced off the trees send shrapnel everywhere, or turned the trees into shrapnel. What made things worse was the American soldiers were made to stay in foxholes in arctic conditions; after fighting in the Russian winter the Germans learned to stay in houses and farms.
Another bad thing about Bastogne and the artillery was that the ground was frozen as hard as metal. Artillery splinters would rebound off that frozen ground rather than digging in - and the casualties multiplied.
No question that the 88 was dreaded with its accuracy and high velocity. But the Germans came to fear American artillery as much if not more; once properly supplied and positioned, its accuracy and volume devastated German troops and positions to a greater degree than the 88. There are many accounts from German survivors of the hell it inflicted before and after their Bulge offensive stalled and they had to retreat.
One of the top 3 series of all time for me. Only the movie Platoon comes close to describing the humanity and the cruelty and devastation of war, in the way that this show does. It's a thoroughly immersive experience, and I'm glad you feel as strongly about this series as I do. I mean in terms of crying, when you cry, I cry, doesn't matter that I've seen it several times before. I also think your assessment of each episode, and how you pick up on those small details, makes your reaction videos that much more interresting
Thank you so much. It's definitely an all time favourite for me too, now. I've rewatched some of my videos and have back crying all over again. I can't wait to rewatch the entire show in a couple of years.
The way they faded out the image of each man lost was such an impactful way to illustrate the company's losses. You know, the pew is full of men, and slowly you start to see all the familiar faces start to fade away.... it really is very brilliant. This way, it's not just a statistic, but an actual loss of people you were used to seeing from earlier episodes.... then it's just a half-empty pew.... so powerful.
What a brilliant actor the guy who played Dike was - incompetent, careless, unprofessional. Played perfectly.
salvadormarley Totally, right!? As I note in the video the empty look on his face when Winters talks him through tactics was perfect!
Really loving these reactions! Thanks for taking your time to keep making them :)
Speirs was certainly the CO Easy needed, he may seem reckless and blunt, but he was one you could definitely rely on to get shit done. Winters personally didn’t always agree with Speirs’ style of leadership, but he understood he was one you could truly rely on and in that even the men of Easy Co. came to respect that, his job wasn’t to keep you alive, but to lead you and make sure that the dirty work gets done.
Norman Dike is one of the most unfairly treated characters in Band of Brothers though, let's remember that.
The battle depicted were not his only one. And let's remember he was wounded during this action (which they don't show), previously he had gotten commendations for courage and bravery. He got the Bronze star among other things for his leadership in certain situations.
EDIT: And it's perfectly reasonable for someone to "fall apart", especially if they have been wounded etc.
GabrielNicho he was a political hack, I trust the men under his command to give an accurate recollection of his service. I also doubt that dick winters would unfairly malign a brave and competent commander.
Well, unfortunately for you I know of no instance where Winters even mentions this, it was Carwood Liptons recollections Dike was based on, and not even he went as far as the series (Lipton mentions Dike falling apart, he does mention him being hit in the right shoulder also).
Winters only mentions sending in Speirs after being unable to contact Dike, when Dike didn't realize he and his men was in a bad position (after having been wounded). One example is that Dike ordered the flanking mission first, as part of the assault charge, he then cancelled the assault charge after having been wounded and ordering his men to take cover. In the series he is depicted as first ordering everyone to take cover (not being wounded) and then ordering Foley on some crazy suicide mission. This is the kind of bullshit we are dealing with.
E Company recollections are very varied on Dike.
There are tons of war accounts from E Company men, they differ, Winters war accounts have been criticized, you can just google all this stuff or read their books.
Let's not forget that Band of Brothers told us Liebgott was Jewish, Blithe died in 48 apparently, etc etc, not a problem that these things wasn't true or happened.
Mac: I noticed Dike's Wikipedia article was completely removed, I wonder why >_>
GabrielNicho that's strange. He is still mentioned (including the shoulder wound) in the main easy company entry.
Perhaps the page was too contentious or someone deleted it maliciousky.?
I don't know, I just found it weird. I am not familiar enough with Wikipedia to check how articles are deleted or who is doing it.
I've edited a few though, Wikipedia once told me that the Battle of Camden was an American victory......
Thank you so very much for sharing your reactions whilst watching these heroes through horrors. You're doing a phenomenal job. Well done
I cried very hard during both the scene where Buck was in the hospital with the faraway look, and when the men were vanishing in the church scene. This episode is beautiful in it's sadness. There's an episode in Buffy that's just like this. This show is amazing because half of the damn show is like this. Lol.
Incredible.
Chris Bowman Man, I cried so hard when watching The Body episode of Buffy. THAT would've made a reaction video.
Yes. That IS the episode I was referring to. As a person who's lost a family member, it's so perfect though. It's worth watching for anyone. Even though it's hard. It's such a realistic portrayal of what it's like to go through that.
My Grandfather was in the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and fought during the Battle of the Bulge (the battle going on around Bastogne). My uncles tell me there is only one part of the war that he would talk about....that the men who didn't dig their foxholes deep enough would freeze to death in the night.
I have to say, I've seen this series at least 10 times. It never gets old. It's truly a masterpiece of displaying the beauty and emotion of humans while contrasting it with the destructive and rvil that we are able to inflict on each other all while being the most realistic display or WW2. The only thing that breaks me and makes me cry are these depictions of real people during ww2.
4:17 i think right there, Capt Winters was like "oh spare me the lecture" right before he called out to Lt. Spiers.
If you are curious Spiers did kill some PoW during D-day but it is not like they show it there, he was moving the PoW and some germans shot him, one of the prisoners tried to attacked him, and he shot him, and i guess in the heat of the moment he just emptied his thompson on the others who weren't doing anything. In an interview years later he said he had no regrets on anything he did. He was a really tough guy
You do so well and you don't yammer on all during the clips you show. Too many reviewers talk talk talk. Well done, young lady.
I am watching this series for the first time and i am crying along with you. You have so much love and respect for these men but you also have so much sadness in your heart .Some of the scenes depict what these brave men had to face in death, and in life. War really was true hell
Juliette, you're doing good work . One would have to be dead to not react to the things that befell these brave men . Carry on .
"Maybe Spears should give Dyke a cigarette" AHAHAHAHA Brilliant
I can't believe it, you actually made me guffaw (LOUDLY) during an episode that always breaks my heart. ;D (your comment about how Spiers should give Dike a cigarette, of course! LOL)
It's bittersweet because while 1SG Lipton, now 2LT Lipton, got recognition it came along with a heavy price in human life. The cost of war always carries bitterness.
It’s easy to vilify Norman Dike but the truth is that none of know how we would react in the horror of these situation. How many among us know that we would have the courage and mental clarity in the middle of such hell to think clearly and lead men in war? Ive always felt bad for the surviving family of Norman Dike for having to see this portrayal of a man I’m sure they loved. He had children and passed away in 1989.
I know this is later, but my grandpa (my moms dad) was a medic in the Korean War and he didn’t make much friends over and kept to himself. No one asked until my dad got it out of him saying the reason why. In the earlier part of the war, every time he made a friend there, they ended up getting killed. So to cope with that,he stopped making friends during that time
I really enjoy watching and listening to you. Well done I come from a long line of military family and your reactions and emotions are heartfelt
This episode is the one that hits the feels every time. For several reasons
5:50 that part with speers running right through the enemy line is historically accurate btw, they dont make them like that anymore
Great video, tear up every time I watch this 😢
Ok so I've just watched your video about episode seven. You didn't dissapoint! However I am now compelled to rewatch the entire series. I'm not hating that trust me. Thank you!
Love how emotional you are, it’s an amazing show x
Did you watch the last part with the real easy company telling stories, fucking amazing, your heart skips a beat with the stories x
I'll echo your question: How the hell did you edit this?? Answer: Very well. Such a tough, brutal, and beautiful episode.
I definitely like when you mix it up a bit, it keeps things fresh for me at least. I love your work and your reactions keep it coming please.👍
Thanks for sharing!
Did you expect this show to bring out so much emotion when you first started?
walkingdeat4 Honestly, no. I don’t have any personal connection to the armed forces and consider myself mostly a pacifist (though of course... in a situation like the Holocaust it's hard to maintain that view). In the past I’ve probably thought/read more about Nazis and Nazi Germany than the Allied Forces but the discovery of this show and the company in it has been very moving.
You are so amazing. Thank you so much for your videos !!! Greetings and kisses from Hamburg ;)
Just so you know, Dike was actually shot in the shoulder and had multiple medals for prior action.
It's possible it was being shot. It's possible he had reached his own breaking point. He was not like this during the entire war.
He was also an attractive young man whose actor looked nothing like him (unlike the heroes whose actors looked a lot like them).
ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/Norman_Dike.html
Spiers was a complete badass tho and he really did this and just about every thing else alleged to him.

Again another beautiful reaction to just a snapshot of what soldiers went thru in WWII; Thank You! ❤️😁
Very good again dear. And a superior edit to the original post. I do love your after show commentary, but it's obvious how difficult it is in the direct aftermath of watching, so I think it would be great if you can figure a way to have a group discussion when you've finished the series. I know I'd try to join in. Looking forward to the next one 😀
If you own it and watched each episode some of the those still living at the time do interviews at the start of each episode. This series is not made up. It is from the memories of those that lived it. I am sure some parts are dramatized but not ones like these. The characters in this series were real people. Thank you for posting these.
very apt.. nice to see a reaction thats not pointless.. thank you
Apparently Dike won the Bronze Star twice, which is impressive.
Patrick Holt he wasn't that bad as they show him here, but he got wounded rescuing three wounded soldiers in Bastogne and froze on the spot, but yeah he wasn't that much of an idiot
People should really learn to not take everything they see in a show as the entire story.
Good to see a young lady like you watching this. While it is "just a movie" it is very important movie. Without those men, actually boys 18 - 22 years old mostly, where would be today? Where would Europe be? England, USA. Never hide from history no matter how ugly. Learn from it and hope to avoid wars like this by remembering and accepting the fact that there is evil and that there will always be evil in the world. History is our most important tool to keeping peace and our freedom.
That church scene destroys me, every single time.
Oh. And the Spiers story, about him running through a battlefield? Historically accurate.
it was actually downplayed a little. Lipton said in an interview the run was further than depicted in the show and he was under heavier fire.
I think in certain crucial situations, the next ranking officer is allowed to relieve the officer in command and "take charge" of the situation if the officer is deemed inadequate.
When I saw this back in the day, the scene where Spiers takes command by way of Winter's orders. Made me think that if Winters had a son.....ever.....he would be like Spiers with every little issue that life threw at you.
"I want you to do this, this, and this, and when this explodes do this, then this and meet me back here....Got it.....good."
"You wanna cigarette?"......."No?"....
"K".
Great to see a young un enjoying this.
& you live over there. You could go take that band of brothers tour. The fox holes in the woods are still there today. The movie was made in England, but when you see the cross roads in real life, it’s incredible how precise they made everything
Interesting fact: Lt. Dike was actually hit and wounded during the attack into Foy, which caused him to panic and halt the attack. They kind of did his memory a disservice in that regard. Either way he was a shit commander
Juliette Reacts thought so too, but it was a compelling storyline and it's not as if all the other accounts of him are false. Then again, they could have easily had him be shot and that would have made him even more interesting as a character.
Juliette Reacts reading his biography on Wiki, the dude sounds like a real hero..he did some wild stuff!
He had won bronze stars for leadership and heroism under fire previously.
He may have simply broken (as Buck did) by that point.
Maybe you answered/mentioned this before, but do you have any plans to react to The Pacific afterwards? It's another HBO miniseries very similar to Band of Brothers but based in the Pacific theater. Sure you'd enjoy it!
While Pacific is really good, it doesn't quite reach Band of Brothers for me. I think its the lack of connectivity between the 3 main characters. I do agree it is definitely worth watching though.
This was a problem for me. The reason I loved BoB is that it follows this one company through the whole war so you really get to know the people. Pacific just felt like a "normal war film". It didn't suck me in like BoB.
Although I've only seen it once where as I've watched Bob several times, so that might affect it a little as well.
The Pacific was great, but BoB is on a whole other level. The writing and the depth in which you understand the characters by the end of the series is unparalleled but most mini-series. Many critics actually put BoB ahead of Roots as the greatest mini-series of all time.
I’m definitely watching it - but will break for a few weeks in between BoB and starting The Pacific. :)
I enjoy seeing your videos with you reacting to Band of Brothers and i am really looking forward to seeing you react to The Pacific :) Please let me know when you will start watching The Pacific and also when your video of you reacting to episode 8 of Band of Brothers comes out. Keep up the good work reacting to different videos...you're doing a great job! :)
I really like the more reaction/less footage. We are here for reaction/review/insights. If we want to only see the footage we watch the series. Well done.
I’m really enjoying your reactions to the Band of Brothers series! I definitely subscribed. If you enjoy Band of Brothers this much, please please consider reacting to “The Pacific” series, once you’ve finished Band of Brothers. The Pacific is the exact same thing as BoB, made by the same people, but it focuses on the United States Marine Corps, and their fight against the Japanese during WW2. I promise you, you’ll enjoy it just as much, if not more than Band of Brothers.
itgXvid I'm watching The Pacific for certain. But I'm going to take a couple of weeks break after BoB before I start it. :)
Another great reaction video. Personally I like more reaction and less footage. The reason is that I (and probably most of your subscribers) have seen this series at least once! We know what you are reacting to. I'm here for your reaction. Keep it up. If you take requests then I'd like to see you react to the opening beach scene of Saving Private Ryan.
your basic soldier may not get the big picture but in combat they know what to do without orders from officers
Absolutely brilliant what got you started on the series?
Someone recommend it to me! I do a series called Premiere Pioneer where I was the first episode of random shows and I really liked the first BoB ep. I'm always up for recs!
should have left in the part where 1SG Lipton ran toward an enemy sniper who was shot by Shifty Powers.
We have got to keep moving! We are sitting ducks out here!
I always chuckle and kind of get sad at him getting the news getting a battlefield commission. Who replaces him? Good NCOs don’t grow on trees. You’ve got 63 guys left and you’re removing one from the role he knew, to a role he doesn’t, and who takes his place? You don’t have many options.
When I deployed there was literally one guy that could replace me, a couple others that maybe could’ve tried, but it was me as the NCO, him as a Specialist, that was it. You remove the 1SGT? Now who, the options will be tiny.
damn love how passionate you are watching this amazing docu series (document series ) me my self loved band of brother and the pacific but band of brother was more intense in my opinion
thank you for the video and subbed.
NaturalBorn K thank you so much. Getting really invested in this show was so painful (and wonderful!)
You definitely called Muck's death.
Subbed for Band of Brothers.
I have been enjoying your videos. I think after BoB you should do The Pacific.
I always remember the fact that...you and I, and every person born since the end fo that war....we are why those men did this, why they endured what they did.
For anyone interested I'm posting a link below that shows the B.O.B. cast visiting the actual spot where shifty powers took out the German sniper in this episode. The scene when lipton ran out as a decoy and shifty shot from around the corner of a building. It shows the vantage point from the perspective shifty shot from and is very interesting as well as impressive.

So glad a new generation is appriatiatting the sacrifice others made. Also, yes, those who dislike should meet Ronald Spears.
I’ve only seen you do reactions to Band of Brothers. You should do a reaction to Chris Stapleton,Tennessee Whiskey and Sometimes I cry.Its country, and I’m not crazy about country, but this man can sing his biscuit off.
With Band of Spiers , this series would be only two episodes - 1st Currahee , 2nd Berlin
need to do one on Black Hawk down
I was a ranger and would love to see your feed back
hey awesome reaction just wondering any interest in watching the pacific after this its not nearly on this level but is still a good watch?
14:19 ohh.... they will take it much further
I enjoyed your reactions! Great series, you should also check out The Pacific. Same Director, it's the Marines point of view during ww2 while this show is the Armies. Give it a try!
@@JulietteReacts I just noticed that like after I commented 😂
I'm watching them now 😊
Badass # 1 = Dick Winters
Badass # 2 = Ronald Sports
Badass # 3 = The rest of the men
Donnie Wahlberg is extremely underrated. Dare I say it? He's a better actor than his brother.
I'm glad that you are enjoying Band of Brothers. When you have finished the series, check out this video (czcams.com/video/uxv3s7xTYHU/video.html) and go to he 20:25 point. The videomaker talks about a scene involving Winters accepting the surrender of a German Officer and goes on to relate how the real life version of what transpired turned out. He switches archive footage of Winters talking about what happened and it turns out to be interesting and pretty moving.
spears was a no nonsense soldier
Just trying out more reaction/less footage!
Juliette Reacts I'm liking it!
I was crying at the same time just listening to the clips. It's a amazing series. Glad to see you're going to read the book.
Juliette Reacts hey just watch the documentary. Even if you do not want to react.
You should watch the history buffs on this. While that crappy combat leader was very flawed and a bad leader. The book failed to mention the things he did that saved lives. He also got shot on the assault of the village he did not lay down and quit. Good soldier bad leadet
Juliette Reacts at 2:05 the guy on the left of the screen is my uncle who played Alex Penkala in the show and it still feels weird watching him on TV
