Now that is how a lens test video should look like
Reminded me of Terrence Malick's cinematography, which is a huge compliment. Well done!
This is excellent, very atmospheric!
Amazing feel and capture :) Well done!
Thanks!
just amazing 👍
+Tolga Bedir Thank you!
dude this so clean!!
+Tyler Penney Haha thanks.
Fantastic!!!
+Kansas City Chief Thanks!
So smooth and well done, love the unique camera movements too!
+Taz Olson Thanks! I use glide gear 5050
Reminds me of the some of the sequences in the revenant, with the wide angle, smooth movement, colorgrade. Great work! I've just purchased the GH4 which I'll use with my Rokinon.
+N.T. Jordan Thanks I loved The Revenant, the camera work was very relatable. Congrats on the purchase!
In one word "Surreal".
Thanks! That's the feel I like to go with for most of my videos here.
Beautiful color grading! Very inspiring man
+M.Danila “flyfilipinoguy” Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
Woah. Nice film man!
+TyRae Thanks!
This is so cinematic and beautifull ! great feeling in motion !
+Konrad Kultys Thanks!!
+Lawton Meyer could you please tell me what time of the day the part from 3:07 was shot ? it is so well graded !
Konrad Kultys I think it was around 3-5pm
+Lawton Meyer with some kind of ND filter on ?
Konrad Kultys Nope. It was awhile ago, but I probably closed the aperture a bit, shot flat, and graded heavily.
this is very beautiful
Danky Productions Thanks! You're beautiful! :D
haha thank you
And people say the GH4 is not cinematic looking enough. pfttttt
Haha
Amazing shots! Too bad the youtube compression is so unforgiving.
I love this. Interesting compositions and angles. Subscribed!... and I'm looking to get this camera...and lens...
awesome video :) we are kind of same style when shooting !!
Fucking beautiful, man.
Thanks!
Quick question: if you could only choose one of the Rokinon lenses you've used, which one would it be?
Thanks!
Oooh, that's a tough one. My favorites are the 14mm and 85mm, but if I was only going to have one lens it would make sense to have something more mid range like a 35mm. I'm going to say 14mm because that was my only lens for a good two years and I used it for everything.
Yeah, I was torn between the 14mm and 35mm, specially in a GH sensor.
Thanks again, man!
No problem, happy shooting!
thanks for replying, im just doing some research before i buy
JoserTheDirector No problem!
Grading is tremendous.
oh wooooow
all the footage ive seen from the gh4 on youtube has been mostly garbage.
your shots and angles are so interesting. this some of the best test footage ive seen on youtube period
+Hot New Mixtapes TV Thanks!
Looks great! I'd recommend neat video for 96fps
+Aaron Harper Thanks! I've looked at that before. This was shot at 60fps tho.
Once again nice shots.
Where'd you take these?
David L Sumner Around New York and Connecticut various places.
Really good! Did you use a vest to get the controlled (and very smooth/slow) movements? Or just lots of practice with the Glide Gear
+De Beeldrijmer Filmproducties No vest, with the GH4 it's light enough that you don't really need one, but when using heavier cameras I use a vest because.. well you really need one haha. Alot of practice definitely went in to it, when I first got it I would practice for hours everyday.
wow im impressed really good Job :) can u tell me how you achieve that grading Look are you grading with Luts?
Hey thanks alot! My grading has changed so much over time, but yes I start with luts as a foundation. Then add layer after layer and make all kinds of adjustments until I have something that fits what I'm trying for. The luts I started with for this were osiris luts. Which I don't use as much anymore, they're very stylized. But most editing programs have lots of color grading tools that come with them, I use curves and color wheels quite a bit. I like to get the color basically how it is and then push it slightly more towards a fantastical look. And all you have to do is just take out or add in reds greens and blues until you have something you like.
Simply amazing, as always! Got a question, if a 14mm Rokinon cine lens is used without the MetaBones Speed booster on the GH4, will the GH4 therefore be 'seeing' 28mm due to the Micro Four Thirds sensor on the GH4? Therefore if the MetaBones Speed booster is used with the same Rokinon 14mm cine lens, will the GH4 'see' the correct 14mm as per the 14mm lens?
Am I correct with what I said above? Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Thanks! And good question, honestly I've always been a bit confused about that stuff myself. I do believe that with out the speed booster you would be getting a cropped image, and with it is definitely wider, I'm not positive it is the full 14mm though, it might crop slightly, but I think it gets it pretty close. Long answer short, no speed booster = cropped. Speed booster = less cropped (not exactly sure it's true 14 though, but close)
Thanks and you are correct; I did some searching and found that it comes close but not exact, just as you said.
Far out this is good! I'm looking to get both these lenses for my GH4 (Speed Boosted also)
Is the 14 pretty wide? Or sometimes you wouldn't mind slightly wider? (works out to like 20mm i think...)
I'm not sure exactly what it is with the speedbooster, but it is definitely plenty wide. I don't think I would go any wider myself, but it really depends on what you're looking for.
Amazing video and song, you should have more subscribers. Which speedbooster are you using, did you have any problems with vignetting while shouting in 1080p 18mm?
+George Picioraga Thanks! I use the metabones EF - 4/3 speedbooster. And my wide angle is actually a 14mm, and no I have never noticed a problem with vignetting.
Love these videos, man! Just got a Rokinon 14mm myself, and I'm curious about what ND setup and filters you use?
As far as I know you can't fit filters right on the 14mm without a matte box. I just close it down to ~16 for day time shooting, which works out because I like deep focus for most of the wide moving shots.
Ah okay. Yeah, this is my first curved lens and it threw me for a little bit of a loop since I didn't want to use a matte box and add any more weight to my gimbal setup. Anyway, thanks for helping us all make better videos, and keep up the good work!
Happy to help, keep at it!
Amazing Work.!! I just got this lens today.!
But i just have a question brother.
How you got that stability in the video? What equipment are you using? Thanks
Dali Kubrick Thanks man, I use a Glide Gear DNA 5050, it's in the description. It's a lot like a glidecam but a different company.
Hi firstly really nice video dude! I have a GH4 and the Samyang 12mm f2 which is a lovely lens... when you say you use a metabones do you Cannon mount Rokinin lenses or Panasonic micro 4/3s ? Thanks.
Thanks! My lenses are all canon ef, and I just use the metabones as a way to mount them on my gh4.
Stunning! I was wondering, how can you use the extra stop in brightness that the metabones offers you if there is no electronics connecting with the camera and the aperture ring stops at t/3.1?
Hmm, I really don't know honestly. I'm not the greatest with technical knowledge. I know my rokinon lenses aren't electronic to begin with and the 14mm for example has an f 2.8 but with the metabones it supposedly becomes ~ f 2 or 1.8 not exactly sure how that works and haven't noticed the biggest difference.
The gh4 will still measure the light coming through lens and immediately notice the extra stop or so of light courtesy the metabones. You manually set your f/stop at desired setting, set your iso at desired setting, then adjust shutter speed until camera meter signals proper exposure. Or set shutter speed first, then adjust aperture. And you can always readjust your iso so that shutter speed and f/stop align to your preferences, just try to not go over iso 800 for minimal noise. I don't yet have the gh4 but planning on getting one with metabones xl booster to use on my decades old Nikon Nikkor prime lenses. I was weaned on purely manual still cameras, 35mm and medium format, so manual exposure is really simple, fast, reliable.
One up on the grading, color profile questions. What profile did you use and what tools did you use for grading? I've gotten very comfortable with the GH4 now, but it's always cool to see what other people are finding success with, profiles wise. Nice work.
Micah Lindstrom The speed and slow motion of your rotations are really nice. Great mood.
Micah Lindstrom I use cineD and grade in premiere.
Very nice video ! Which video format did you use ? Did you use the cine-d or cine-v profile ?
+Julien Rouvier I used cine D.
Curious if you use an external recorder and v-log for any of your films. Also what picture profile and settings you use.
Hey Lawton. I'm making an independent film with some colleagues of mine, and I was curious to know If I could have the rights to the music in "The Ice Melts." It is beautiful, euphoric, and it almost perfectly fits my concept in mind. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you!
great low light shots. what ISO were u at on the GH4?
***** I usually don't go any higher than 800. It varied on this video, but the range would have been anywhere from 200 - 800.
WOWW ! did you do any third party color grading like magic bullet ? or is this from the premiere color corrector/rgb ?
+Tony Picaso No it's all in premiere, although I do use osiris luts as a starting point. And it's funny you mention rgb because for this I didn't know about that but recently discovered it and now I use it for everything lol. The trick is just to bump the colors slightly left of reality.
loll, thank you so much for the advice ..so dope ! def keep up the great work..your color grading is on point !
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Anytime.
Killin it, I'm thinking of getting rokinon lenses, are these cinema lenses? And if so what are your feelings about them
JoserTheDirector Yes. Rokinon cine primes. I love them. The reason I initially got my first was because of the affordable price, but they have all turned out to be very clear, rugged lens. My first one, the 14mm, has been drenched in rain, buried in snow, covered in fake blood, and I even slipped on some ice during a hike and it's still good as new!
Nice, when you first got the gh4, did you buy a Panasonic m4/3 len? If so do you still use it
JoserTheDirector Nope. My previous camera was a canon t4i and I had my rokinon 14mm and 85mm that I used for that. When I got the gh4 I got a metabones speedbooster that adapts the canon lens to a micro 4/3 mount. That way I can use my lens on both cameras (even though the gh4 is better in every way). Plus I heard speedboosters are pretty great regardless.
the metabones you have, im assuming is ef mount or fd?
JoserTheDirector Yes.
okay i have a couple more questions, if you can help me, im so confused, what exact metabones did you get, and what mounts are the rokinon, i was trying to get something going but cant seem to match up the rokinon canon mounts with the metabones canon mounts, omg please helpm sorry if i sound dumb
JoserTheDirector Haha no worries man! The metabones has a 4/3 side, that goes on the gh4. Then on the other side it's a canon ef mount, this allows you to use canon lens. Mine is called "Canon EF to Micro 4/3". My rokinons I originally got for my canon t4i. The speedbooster is simply something inbetween that allows canon ef lens to be used on a 4/3 body. Hope that helps. :)
Some of the transitions seemed too abrupt, but the camera movement was fantastic. Great work!
+Kellen Lester I agree. The problem was I shot alot of this over the course of months and different locations, it's definitely missing some cohesion. I also think some of the shots are a bit too long, but I try to learn with every video, and I've definitely been putting alot more thought into transitions recently. Thanks for watching!
+Lawton Meyer Any form of art improves with practice. I'm in the same boat. How do you like your Rokinon 14mm? I've been considering purchasing it. I'm more of a photographer. Shoot mostly landscapes and have little use for a zoom.
Kellen Lester I love it! I've had it longer than any of my other lenses, it's pretty beat up at this point but still works great.
Glad to hear it. Do you publish any content on Instagram?
Kellen Lester Nah, I don't have a smart phone or anything and it seems like a hassle to set up without one.
Hi! I’m a very beginner and learning. I have the Gh4 and am looking into buying this lens and speed booster. Just have a few questions sorry!
This lens is only manual focus? If so how do you maintain focused shots?
I don’t have a different camera so do you think it would be good choice to by the lens and speed booster or just a different lens that already works for gh4?
Thank you so much
Yes, the lens is manual focus only, but since it's a very wide angle lens most of your image will be in focus to begin with. Usually I'll just set focus before I start shooting based on where the camera will be moving. So if I'm shooting something far away I just set it to infinity and go. I think the speed booster and rokinon combo is great, but there are no wrong answers, if you like another lens more that will work fine I'm sure. Personally I'd suggest the speed booster because it will give you greater depth of field and extra brightness.
Lawton Meyer awesome thank you so much! It really helps. I’m getting a lot of my questions answered by just reading other comments, thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge instead of not helping other people. Can’t wait to see more videos!
beautiful!!!!! l have gh4, but the lens is for nikon or canon?
Federbj Di Marzio My lens that I use are canon and I use the metabones speed booster to adapt them. Metabones also makes mounts for nikon.
+Lawton Meyer ahhh thats why It doesn't look like a 28mm with the 14mm rokinon :)
i just got this camera with that exact lens every thing costed me 1500$
Really nice! Any how to videos for these moves?..........
Thanks! And yes, check out my most recent upload. And subscribe please!
Im already subbed ;) thnx gonna check it out!
My Gh4 says it doesn't recognize my Rokinon Cine lens, can you help?
Huh strange. The only thing I can think it might be is that since the rokinon is a manual only non electronic lens, it means it can't control the focus, so no auto focus another words. You can't control the lens from the camera, only manually. When I still shot on my canon t4i I had my rokinon 14mm and it came up with a similar message on the display, but I would just hit the record button and the shutter would make a noise and it would allow me to shoot. Do you have your rokinon mounted directly to the gh4? Or do you have an adapter between them? It might not recognize it since it's a manual lens, that's my best guess. Try hitting the record button see if that does anything.
What do you use grade?
I do my grading in premiere with film convert pro and lumetri tools.
Lawton Meyer thank you.
I have received my glidegear dna 5050 and I was wondering how many weights you added below.
I usually do 2 of the bigger ones and one smaller one on each side. But this will really depend on what you're using. It's all about the balance. I have my gh4 with a battery grip and a video mic up top, I like to make the camera as heavy as possible so the movements are steadier. It's definitely difficult at first so don't get discouraged, I don't know if you've had a chance to use it yet, but the best I can say is experiment with different weights to find what you like best, because what works for me, might not work for you and your set up.
Got it its very frustrating to set up, currently using no weights as opposed to putting 2 small weights on either side
It will be at first, but you'll get the hang of it, just keep at it!
How did you get to shoot in Slow motion?
So on the GH4 and GH5 there's something called "VFR" or variable frame rate. It shoots at a higher speed and converts it in camera to 24fps, making it slow motion. If you wanted to do this with other cameras you would just shoot at a higher frame rate. 60fps for example, and then slow it down in the edit. Whatever program you edit in there should be a time/duration option for each clip, but there's multiple ways to do that. You just need to make sure you're shooting at a higher speed (like 60fps) otherwise it will be blurry.
Lawton Meyer ok thanks man. For some reason I couldn't change the frame rate on my gh4. I know with the rokin 12mm it's manual so I thought that was the problem. This video is so dope man. I love it. I became an instant fan
Thanks! Yeah your lens would have nothing to do with the frame rate. You might have to go into your settings and make sure it's at cinema frequency or something like that.
Lawton Meyer how do I do that bro? I'm still new to shooting film.
itzabouttogetreal You'd have to go into your settings and find the frame rate options and set it to 60fps. In post if you're in premiere right click on your clip and go to speed/duration and set it to 50% 40% etc.
Would you mind sharing your color profile and settings please ?
For this it was cineD and bring sharpness, contrast, and saturation all the way down to -5. Now I use v-log, sharpness all the way down.
Do you ever mess with master pedestal ?
Nope. I would say to just keep everything as simple as possible. Once you start pushing it too far you lose quality and get more noise and artifacts and all that stuff.
great thanks
what are your settings?
Well this was almost two years ago so they've changed a bit. This video was CinelikeD and minus 5 everything (sharpness, contrast, saturation). Now I use v-log and don't touch anything else. I just keep it simple, don't push the camera too far, etc.
how do you get to use the slow motion with the 14mm without the 1080p uncropping?
Hmm, not quite sure what you're talking about. I don't alter the footage at all other than color grading.
Only the 1080p mode will do 60 fps right? and When I go into my 1080p mode with any wide angle lens there's major vignetting. my 4k mode will crop in but then I don't have 60 fps.
Hmm not sure what to tell you. I do use a speedbooster, I've really never experienced any vignetting before. If it's a very wide lenses like 8mm or something there may be some natural vignetting. I'm not sure, that's not something I've had to deal with, sorry. Hope you can figure it out!
