    I totally agree with you about signs of life in landscape photography. Years ago I was in a Camera club and with two other professional photographers we previewed over 1000 pictures in one night. Many of them were landscape shots and the biggest complaint that those two professional photographers had, all these pictures, and many of them were very very good. But they said there was no sign of life, and if there was a subject, they didn’t stand out from the background. They needed to have something red or something contrasting so it would stand up from the background. Excellent video thank you for sharing.Regards Gerry

    Another very good video on what makes good photography. As a hobbyist, I've learned to shoot images that have meaning to me, not what is expected by "pros" or social media. If I really like an image I've shot, it goes up on a wall before even thinking about sharing.

    I really like the first tip about letting one genre influence another. I have found that I already do that to some extent. I like to make street-style images in rural areas and on well used walking paths and hiking trails in the forest. I also like including the unexpected human element in what would be a traditional landscape image. I avoided or cropped out such elements in the past. I now look for them and use them as subjects or to support the main subject. When I am on a beautiful trail it is nice to include a family, or mother and child that show how people enjoy the place that I am visiting. It really makes an addition where I use to think they were a distraction.

      @@johnchastain4351 thanks so much John, awesome comment to receive because that was my exact experience as well. Much to chew on in this one - part of “consuming media😊”. Takes discipline, practice, and ability to sift through content to get meaningful and practical take-aways. Agree that when we care about our subjects (resonating) we can make fine images. IMO, blending selective characteristics of genres can work, within limits (e.g., astrophotography vs macro) - weddings vs. wildlife (?).
    Nice upturn to 3K subs. Cheers!

    • @DISTANTMEDIA
      @DISTANTMEDIA  Před 29 dny +1

      @@paulm8157 Cheers for watching Paul! yeah of course there’s always going to be some genres that don’t align at all at their face value forms. But there’s still always something you will learn and be able to carry over. Wildlife vs weddings for example could simply be carrying over your ability to completely compress your subject in wildlife and applying that to a couple at a wedding. Silly example but you know what I mean, it’s about pulling small aspects of experience from as many forms of photography as you can (or at least a few in order to land on a bit more of an interesting style)
      Thank you, slow and steady grind so far haha! Have a good weekend ahead!

    "I am a Photographer, not a Genre". Biggest influence, Ernst Haas. If you're taking photographs to get likes, you're selling yourself short. The only time you shoot photos to please other people is when that are paying you! Above all, enjoy what you do and have fun. These are good suggestions. I would encourage others to give a little extra consideration to the third one - about pleasing yourself with your photos instead of being driven by what you think others want to see. Sure, you want a shot of every person at particular events. But, you'll never arrive at a personal style or "look" if you chase that chimera of pleasing others. It confuses people sometimes to see images, such as family subjects, that don't exactly conform to what they're expecting.
    Another aspect of this is taking "classic" scenes and pictures that will definitely please others, but for the purpose of getting them off your chest. Then you can move on to your own interests without a sort-of nagging feeling that can inhabit your mind when you approach typical subjects.
