  • It's Raining Barley! in Montana 2020 | Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion
In this weeks video I am harvesting barley. I show you all of the extra buttons that are used when you run the big headers. I am straight cutting the barley with a 30 ft header. I see wildlife in the barley field. Can you guess what I see? One of our combines breaks down. My 9610 and I are the only ones still running. I explain the ins and outs of harvesting barley in Montana. You will get to watch a dump on the go. I also explain the header sections on my combine. My combine gets too full and the barley starts raining down on me. Thank you so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed the video!

My Story... Hello. My name is Kate Stephens and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was 2 years old. Until recently the wheat we grow has been taller than me. My grandfather is 93 and he is the best mentor ever. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm and I decided that the amazing photos I take at harvest of our wheat and barley could make fabulous, exciting designs for fashion and accessories. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my handbag as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

My favourite ag. channel. You're the real deal Kate. You know your job and explain it so well. No show boating as you see on other ag. channels. Stay modest and honest. Then you will always have respect for yourself and the respect of others. A great great girl.

I agree, Kate has a very nice way of showing viewers her contribution to the harvest. And yes, Kate you do that without showing off or acting in a goofy way like a few of the "show boaters", as Dell so accurately describes them, on youtube. Growing up on a farm is 1,000 better than working for corporate America. You've gained more work ethic, knowledge and early wisdom than 100 city counterparts. Really like your videos....

The idea that “I’m going to do it, because SOMEBODY has to,” is the spirit that builds wealth, communities and nations. It is always easier to “Let someone else do it,” but that mindset leads to poverty and decline. Whether it is “cutting around the power pole,” taking the shopping cart back to the cart corral or store entrance, shoveling your elderly neighbor’s snow, or picking up a piece of litter, when you volunteer to take on the task without being asked, no matter how small, you are adding to the wealth of the society, and building civilization. Kate, if you have inspired anyone watching your channel to “cut around the power pole because somebody needs to do it,” you are a super-hero. Now we just need a picture of you standing in front of stubble field wearing a green cape with a JD logo.

Kate says, "...this 9610 just keeps on going. After the others are down, it just keeps running! Even when the wheel falls off, just give it more power!" I loved that comment! (Kate actually had this happen to her and didn't initially realize her wheel had left the combine. She kept on going- even made a corner before someone saw the wheel lying in the field.) ...MORE POWER! You are such an awesome farmer! (& thanks to your family too!)

Never heard of them called "sections" before, we always called them cutters or blades. It wasn't uncommon to have to replace several during harvest time for various reasons. Thankfully the task wasn't too labor intensive, but they certainly were sharp. Gloves were essential.

Thank you for the comments on your family's harvest. It's not easy to catch on the run. When I was farming, we ALWAYS made sure the combine was cutting crop. I didn't have a grain cart so the trucks put on a lot of miles! I didn't have a very big combine. A red Massey Ferguson with a 24 foot header. When the combine broke down, it was stressful because we weren't harvesting any crop! :-(

Wow, Kate, I love your videos, horizon to horizon, fields of grain. So different from the self contained dairy farms of west central Wisconsin from 40 years ago. Small family farms of 80 to 160 acres, with half the land area being pasture, forest and hilly. Grow oats as companion crop to start the alfalfa. Hay, corn and oats for cow feed, straw for bedding. Sold only milk and surplus calves. Combines were small pull type pto driven with 6 foot heads and 25 bu tank. Two wheel drive tractors of less than 100 hp. The cows are mostly gone now, with even the 1500 cow operations selling out, leaving just a few large grain operations , growing corn and beans. I'm 75 yo, been on my 160 for 48 years. Now into reforestation, with 100,000 trees.

Every day you have your grandfather is a blessing...ask a lot of questions that's one way to learn...he has a vast amount of knowledge and work experience...so does your dad...i truly believe it's important for the old generation to pass on knowledge to the younger generations... unfortunately a lot of our society hasn't been doing that...
It's sad to see so many that have so little knowledge or no knowledge at all.
If you stop learning, your ability to learn goes down...by definition .. intelligence is the ability to learn...the more you practice the better one gets..
Wow, ur grandpa is in his 90's that's fantastic.. He doesn't look it, I thought he was younger.👍🙏
Wider isn't always better, 30 feet seems pretty good..

Hi Kate I like your videos and combine. Barley being dirty reminded me of 60 years ago when I was a boy we had an Allis Chalmers All Crop pull behind combine with I think a six foot cut on our Pennsylvania farm. My brother and I would ride the combine an a small bench and bag the grain. I think we cut about 10 acres a day. The grain bags were heavier than I was. We would slide them off on an old truck we had then shovel them by hand into the granary in the barn. It took about a week to stop itching and coughing... Keep up the good work!!

You will forever appreciate cabs to avoid dealing with barley dust if you ever have to shovel out a barley bin.
If someone on the farm is somewhat complaining about a specific task toss them in a bin of barley on a hot day with a shovel and they will quickly get a reality check as to what is a miserable job to do.
