  • Is My Combine Overheating?? Yes it is!!!!! Kate's Ag
Today is a day of wheat harvest on our Montana century farm. You will get to drive with me around the field and learn more about where your food comes from. I started the video after having a delicious lunch in the field. We have a really heavy wheat crop in parts of the field because it got additional fertilizer. I am combining the wheat next to the the 15 grain bins and school house, which we took a tour of in my last video • Grain Bin Tour Montana... I drive the combine by the homestead and elevator my Great Grandfather built. I am harvesting in the same field my Great Grandfather did in 1912. You will learn how to drive a combine in a straight line down the field. My combine starts to overheat so I have to stop in the field. My uncle and our hired man come and blow out the filter so I can keep going. There are lots of hawks in the field today. It is incredible. I show you a dump on the go in the grain cart. I also talk about my Farm to Fashion products I am launching this fall. I have been working very hard on them and I am very excited. It is very important to buy U.S.A. made products and locally harvested goods. I have a combine conference call with my mentor the founder of JanSport, Murray McCory. He has the absolute best advice ever and I always love talking to him. I dump into the tandem truck. I explain why you shouldn't go down a coulee with a full tank of grain. I am very passionate about educating people on where their food comes from. I believe everyone should have a connection with their food. At the end of the video you will get to meet my grandpa. Thank you for watching & I hope you like my video!

    New Video Every Wednesday
    My Story...
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was 2 years old. Until recently the wheat we grow has been taller than me. My grandfather is 93 and he is the best mentor ever. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm and I decided that the amazing photos I take at harvest of our wheat and barley could make fabulous, exciting designs for fashion and accessories. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my handbag as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

I admit it, women are soooooo much better at multitasking than we men are. Lookit, she’s driving a combine, giving a tour of the physical farming grounds, buildings, equipment, and fields, and giving a lecture of sorts about farming itself, all the while looking composed and pretty. You go girl, with your adorable girl power, yeah!

I grew up in the Midwest in a farming community. My family were not farmers but I did work for neighboring farmers doing hay, plowing, harvest and working livestock. I now live in the city and miss the rural farming communities. It's very refreshing to see that America still has proper young ladies as yourself. You are a ray of sunshine, and your parents must be so very proud of you.

It's very important to stay hydrated.
It's hard to think about having your at least two liters of water a day, when you are
    fully concentrated on your job.
I once had a renal insufficiency because of that.
Three weeks in hospital, every day an infusion of 2 liters of liquidness.
    No fun at all.
But they saved me and now I definitely know how important it is to drink
your at least two liters a day. 🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤🥤

After harvest we have to take the wheat berries to get cleaned so we can plant some of them again for next year's harvest. I will show the seed cleaning process in another video too because it is pretty neat. Then we begin seeding or planting. After that there is cleaning all the equipment and getting things organized for spring seeding. Thank you so much for your super kind words and great questions!!!!

Some excellent fly fishing there in Montana!! Kate, maybe in another video you can go with dad and do some trout fishing?! Would be cool. If not, I totally would understand.
Great information about when your family started way back then, and the homestead...you should be proud, very proud to be part of such an amazing family with that background. Most people may think, awe just farming, but there's much more to farming that meets the eye! And in today's world a gal like you at your age, with so much farming knowledge, is just something to behold :-)
I've mentioned it in another comment I left, like a breath of fresh air :-) nowadays, most at your age, don't even know where their nose is still lol!

Kate, it is important that more people get connected to how their food is produced. I am 78 and will be teaching a class on farming in the 21st century this winter to a group of retirees. . So much has changed in my lifetime in terms of farming and technology. I am missing harvesting this fall for the first time since I retired due to Covid. I help harvest wild rice about 500 miles north of your location.
    Keep your passion for farming.

Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion you are more than welcome! question: why do you cut wheat in windrows and the pick them up later. why not cut and pick up the grain in one step as i have seen done on other farm channels?

    • @KatesAg
      @KatesAg  Před 3 lety +1

Thank you that’s an excellent question. In our area we commonly get a fly called Saw Fly. They cut through the wheat stem and lay eggs in it. When this happens the wheat no longer stands up anymore instead it lays down. This makes it really hard to strait cut the wheat because we would have to lay our combine headers on the ground and we would not be able to get all of the wheat. We try and swath the wheat before it falls down. When the wheat is swathed it is much easier to pick up with the combine because it is all together rather than laying down. Occasionally we are able to strait cut the wheat because we plant semi - solid stem wheat which is a variety of wheat with a stronger stem that doesn’t fall down as easy. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your question.
