    Well, this little chest of drawers gave me ALLLLL the trouble, and even though I wasn't blown away with the results, I AM happy enough with it to be able to proudly sell it and I just know SOMEONE out there is going to love the colour. I just know now that this colour just isn't my thing. hahaha
    I had a lot of repairs to make on this little dumpster rescue, and while it would have been nice to be able to just clean the piece up, the finish was beyond too far gone. Before you get mad at me for painting it...
    It's not real quarter sawn oak, it's a faux finish over mediocre pine, so I didn't feel all that guilty for painting it. Especially if it helps make this piece usable and desirable for someone and save it from the landfill! BUT.... it would have been nice had I just been able to clean it up without having to remove the faux finish. sigh
    In regards to the prints that will be for sale soon, as soon as my website is finished, I'll be sure to share it with you all. ❤️

    Knapp joinery was primarily used 1870-1900. I found an ugly neon green wash stand in a small antique store with this joinery. Under layers and layers of paint was a lovely washstand/soon to be my bathroom vanity. Your piece came out lovely! You honor the age of the piece with your talents. Not museum quality you say, but the kind of piece my ancestors would have had. The glazing made it perfect. Wonderful job!

    I had never heard of, or seen, the peg/scallop joinery before. How very unique, and yet I can't begin to imagine how difficult it must have been to create prior to modern power tools. You gave this piece a major facelift and a chance at another life. Well done!! 👏👏👏

    • @BrooksMoses
      @BrooksMoses Před rokem +17

      That joinery was created with circa-late-1800s power tools that were built specifically for the purpose of making it -- and it was specifically designed to be easy to do with power tools, unlike dovetails that weren't doable with power tools until we got to the era of modern routers. The "peg" side was made with a rotary plug cutter (or a set of them), and the scallops were made with a special shaping cutter. It was as simple as putting the wood into the machine and pulling a few levers.
      It's kind of rare, because only a large furniture shop would have bought the machine to do it, and once it became possible to do dovetails efficiently with power tools, it fell out of fashion.

    Hi Angie, your channel found me a few weeks ago…I love what you are doing! Your tenacity, patience, and vision are just a few of your awesome qualities.
    Many many moons ago I used to find pieces which had seen better days… and, give them new life. It was very time consuming yet very rewarding🌟
    My projects were for personal/ family used… I so wish there had been an opportunity to get help from someone like you. I learnt by my mistakes, but I persisted. The fun thing was, I had 2 boys who were curious to learn. So I set them up with a scroll saw and poplar plywood or pine. They would choose outlines and work on small projects. We all learned together. Now, both in their early 50’s they enjoy doing work needed in their homes, and have also taught their children.
    You are a great teacher, very organized and thoughtful. Your presentation is inspiring. Some people might think … it’s easy … but most of us know the steps one must take to have a good outcome!!! You are an artist. You are giving new life…teaching each of us to see the value and appreciate what we have! 🎉 im grateful your channel found me ! 🙏🌻🍁🍂🧡✨🌟

    I have been salvaging furniture my entire life, my mom has always done it, but you are so knowledgeable about the history and the wood. Even when you are doing something that I could do in my sleep, you always have a bit of knowledge that I did not know. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos!

    I am very impressed with your new Knapp joinery creation skills!!! ❤❤❤ I'm glad that you shared this with us, because things seldom go to plan and it was good to see how you worked through it. 👍 Nacho keeps getting cuter, even if he isn't helping you out like he's supposed to!!! 😀😄😁

    Your video production is getting better all the time. Thank you for showing the decision process too E.g. for the handles. I've never seen a piece painted to look like expensive wood, well not that I'm aware. And those curves dovetail joints! Sorry I can't remember what they are called. But you dove in and recreated them. You really are an artist with diligent craftsmanship. I just love watching your videos.

    Repairing the joinery takes real skill. And in old pieces like that, letting the dents and dings gives it character. Great job.
