This is the first time I come across your CZcams channel. I can’t tell you how much fun I had watching you reupholster that chair. When I was growing up, my mother always reupholstered our sofas, because we couldn’t afford new furniture. I want to say we had the same sofa when I was a kid until I graduated high school…in its many different iterations. The only difference was that she only had a Singer factory machine. She didn’t have a serger or any of the other machines your friend had. She did it all on a regular factory sewing machine that she purchased in New York City in 1971. I have that machine now. She could make anything on that machine, from my father’s suits to my prom dresses, and everything in between…curtains, tablecloths, quilts, and much more. My mother was the kind of person who would see a torn up chair or couch on the side of the road and she would have my dad go pick it up and by the following week, we had a brand new piece of furniture sitting in the living room. I loved that my mother was a recycler of sorts, and I’m so glad to see that there are people out there like you who are learning old world crafts like upholstery. Good luck in all you’re doing to make our world more beautiful!

Tip#1…buy a lesser expensive sewing machine and learn the in’s and outs of threading the machine and bobbin tension and just make pillows with piping. #2…use a block under pedal to control speed until you get the hang of it. #3…start small, ie, a foot stool, ottoman, headboard with tufting, etc. Sewing and upholstery and drapery are so fun!

If you do decide to give it a try, check that the springs and frame are in good shape before you purchase your piece. The piece in the video was was exceptional in that all of the springs, foam, and padding were nearly perfect and needed no repairs. It was also very, very clean under the fabric. I've never had that kind of luck. when I did my first piece I just dove in, took lots of pictures and notes along the way so I could remember how it all went back together and it turned out ok. We used that sofa for years even though I cut the seat cushions exactly wrong. No one ever noticed.

I winged it and reupholstered sofas and chairs. But they are for us so I didn’t have to be professional. I had to use a hand staple gun. I didn’t have any pneumatic tools. That’s soooo much faster and easier!! I’m a sewer so I figured “how hard can it be?” The measuring for fabric is the hard part. Always buy way more than you think you need. I would def go somewhere to go learn in a couple of days!! Oh my gosh that discount fabric store!!! We don’t have them near me anymore. We had soooo many in Philly years ago. The owners retired and nobody wanted the businesses. Sad but true. I used to also make wedding dresses and these stores in Philly had that fabric as well. There was a whole street dedicated to fabrics. They are simpler than regular clothes. There is just a lot more fabric to move around. That’s ag lol I drive my sewing machine like I’m in a drag race sometimes. I can’t help myself. I’m like how it sounds. 😂. Oh piping. My nemesis. 😂Needless to say none of my reupholstered furniture has any. When I see a great chair on marketplace that I wanna redo if it has piping I’m like “hard no”. She makes it look so stinkin easy!!! You are a natural. Go girl!! Now I really wanna take a class. I have to see if the vocational school still has night classes for adults. Back in the day they had so many but I wasn’t old enough. My dad took car body repair and woodworking. He patched his car and repainted it. He made us a huge toy box. I’d call that a win.

Wow! This was great. And the color green is having a moment. Years ago my mom suggested that I learn re upholstery. I was not into it. She used to work at an upholstery factory years ago in England before I was born and thought I had a good eye for revamping old furniture. And now my mom is gone and I wish I could go back and take her advice. I'd love to learn this skill. It's so necessary now with waste and rising costs to know how to fix and renew old things. And most older things were made better. This was a treat to watch. Now I need to find somewhere that teaches this. She really does need a channel. I'd be one of the first to subscribe. You made my day.

I gave away two fabulous Hollywood Regency chairs because I couldn't find any classes in reupholstery. I put them out in front of my house, and they were gone in less than 30 minutes. I hope they found a great home.

I really like the chair. I’m old enough to remember the olive color in my house and in my parents. It was in pretty good shaper. I think I remover that style in turquoise also in an aqua fabric which is my current color I am decorating.

Great content. A very large workspace would be needed for sewing space, cutting space, working space, and furniture storing space. She has a great setup. Also needed, $$$ for investing in appropriate sewing machine which is critical for working with heavier weight upholstery fabric. I compare staple pulling like sanding, tedious and a time sucker, but necessary.

Tip#2:be careful WHERE you find discarded furniture. Any soft (fabric & foam) surfaces with seams can give access to bed bugs. To kill them, put chair in giant plastic bag & leave in heat for 90 days, or for less time, spray with pesticide & leave in bag 1 month) Then use gloves to remove & bag all the old fabric, foam, & batting on arms. I learned this from a friend who brought a "project" chair home from a thrift store that takes donations. I had not realized till then that bed bugs are literally everywhere, & carry blood borne illnesses. So be careful.

Just like with furniture refinishing, you can start with some basic cheaper tools and still make it look good but having better tools does it easier and faster 😊

Cristal estimated $400 to reupholster the chair. I would want to know if that estimate includes materials. The material include the avocado fabric, the deck fabric, the black fabric underneath, assorted tacking strips, sewing thread, piping cord, yards of padding, and staples. It might include a replacement for the foam seat cushion. My guess would be that the client would pay additional for the avocado fabric, but all the materials used during assembly would be included in the labor cost. I am fascinated with the upholstery craft and enjoyed this video. I can do a exquisite box cushions with bias cut piping but not attempted anything else. I wonder how much can be done without all the specialized equipment and the variety of sewing machines. I have only a few older model Singers (all metal parts). Thank you both.

Excellent work, ladies. I wish we had a discount fabric store here, but small town America doesn't compare to your area of AZ. 🎉 i have done some minor upholstery. Cushions that were attached to an antique wicker love seat. My mother used to reupholstery some of our furniture when I was young and she sewed a lot. I am sure having the proper tools makes it much easier. You are an inspiration. It's great to know not everything is thrown away, and reupholstery is still a profession people will teach to others.

I have upholstered furniture for years I learned first year out of high school. I have a small shop. Problem is the furniture they have made the last 20 years is not worth recovering. It's junk . I try and find only things with coil springs hand tied. The chair you did was made by flex steel they used good wood but a bad spring setup. But good luck chair looked nice. I would love to teach someone but know one interested anymore.

The first time I upholstered my hands were swollen! But the whole process was so Interesting and satisfying. It helps to have an industrial sewing machine but not necessary. I encourage all those who want to try, just buy an old chair, be careful removing the fabric and just go for it! Maybe speak to your local supplier to pick up some tips and a few tools! New subscriber!

There are knotts and hand stitcing ,stuffing techniques. Filling holes in wood with glue and sawdust.... loose covers are another art of upholstery (shrink fabric with a hot iron 1st ) . Photograph before and during the removal of old materials ❤

all you need now is a little leather sphere cushion and your avocado chair is lit!!! Beautiful job. yes. I had two chairs covered and fabric alone was $85 a yard. 1 chair was over $1200~ so it is still better to re-use a chair if you love it.
