Guardiola will likely end up with the most trophies, but Ferguson took a relatively small club in Aberdeen to a European trophy, dominated the Old Firm when it was seen as impossible and built and re-built Man United at least 3 or 4 times whilst remaining successful. You can't tell me Manchester United were anything other than the richest club in the world for a loooong loooong time. And you can't tell me they didn't spend that money at all. They virtually invented merchandising and they made a killing doing it (shrewd move, for sure)
I'm a Wenger man myself, but i don't mind saying i have a requisite ton of respect for Ferguson. Only a crazy person would deny his dominance. But Ferguson outsmarted a league that wasn't exactly known for its intelligent football, and it took an embarrassingly long time for the other teams to turn their ships about. When he left United they were on the decline i think, and i do believe it's testimony to his greatness that he was able to win the league that one more time with the players he had at the time (Regardless what disgruntled United fans would say, it wasn't Moyes' fault they fell off so abruptly. I think that without Ferguson to prop them up, the squad found their level- and their best players, the veterans, found their age- pretty darn quickly after that)
Just my opinion, obviously. Cheers, @Seeker64 🥂

  • @mrblisteringbarnacles
    @mrblisteringbarnacles Před rokem +2

Pep's Barca, Sacchi's Milan, The Ajax Team under Rinus Michels and Stefan Kovacs, and Lula's Santos have so far been the teams that have dominated and impacted club football since the inception of the game. These clubs had the greatest influence on the football that was being played in their respective eras and no team comes close.
Having spoken of the greatest teams, a tier down we have some of the great teams that put their stamp in the game. In recent years, we have Zidanes's Madrid, Ferguson's Man United, Wenger's Arsenal, Enrique's Barcelona, Bayern under Jupp Heynckes and Hansi Flick, Pep's Man City, Klopp's Liverpool, Jose's Porto, and Chelsea, etc. These teams have won a lot of trophies and played a huge role in alleviating and ameliorating their club's history.
Comparing Pep and SAF, we are talking about two of the best managers in the history of the game. Speaking of the former, Pep is someone who has a very huge footballing ego. He demands that the team play a possession-based game wherever he goes with a few tweaks in the system here and there. He is someone who won't compromise on his style of play. That is probably why he had a relatively bad first season at City as he did not have the right players for his system. From the 17-18 season, City has probably dominated every season of the Premier League finishing either as Champions or 2nd. He needs to be given massive credit for establishing his style, successfully in England, and for winning a lot of trophies barring the UEFA Champions League. One common misconception about Pep being too extravagant with his signings or having inherited a great team. Not many managers would have trusted a young Sergio Busquets and given him a lot of minutes including a starting berth in the UCL final in Busquets's very first season in the top flight. While this is much of a testament to the abilities of Busquets If not for Pep having managed him in the youth ranks, I highly doubt Busquets would have risen that quickly to the top.
SAF along with Wenger has so far been credited for the rise of English football. SAF may not be as tactically gifted as Pep but his style of man management and giving a lot of focus to the youth as well as the academy is probably one of the main reasons why England has produced a lot of talents in the past few years. The longevity of SAF is also something that has to be given credit. It is not easy to be managing a top team for such a long time. Both SAF and Pep have an innate ability to improve the quality of their players. Ronaldo and Messi wouldn't have been the goal-scoring monsters we have come to witness if not for these managers.
While Pep has achieved a lot so far as a manager in his career and dare I say is one of, if not the best manager tactically, I guess it's too soon to rate both Pep and SAF as managers. It will only be at the end of Pep's coaching tenure that we will be able to judge them appropriately. While I rate SAF's Utd and Pep's City at the same level (with SAF's Utd having a slight edge ) even if City goes on to win the UCL this season, It will take a few more years of Pep winning trophies at City at the same rate as he has won so far at Manchester to overtake SAF's Utd

However he himself has admitted he was incredibly lucky to inherit the golden generation of Barca players....a Bayern Munich team which the season before he took over won the treble "champions league, bundesliga title and there domestic cup" and City welll lets be honest they have had practically unlimited funds for so many years and were already a title winning team before he took over.
If i recall correctly he has spent the second most amount of money as a manager on purchasing players in football club history.

Cruyff took over a Barcelona team that had yet to win a European Cup/Champions League in their history and was in total cultural and financial disarray, and totally reinvented La Masia. I’ve seen people say that Pep took over a struggling Barcelona team. That’s absolutely ludicrous compared to the team Cruyff took over in 1987. Barcelona had won the Champions League 2 years before Pep Guardiola arrived, and sure Frank Rijkaard struggled domestically thereafter, but it was never to the extent of what Cruyff had to deal with. Barcelona were so bad in the 70s and 80s that the actual President of Catalonia totally dismissed the club and disregarded the club’s apparent representation of Catalonia.

@@firedoesnotdiscriminate Winning is not a contribution to the game. Because there has to be a winner. Contribution to the game is about innovating and bettering how the game is played. Pep's 08/09 Barca team did to football what IPhone did to mobile phones. Nobody saw it coming and now everyone is living in it.
Pep's impact on the game how it is played globally and across all levels of competition is unmatched. The only person in the last 40 years who could be mentioned in the same sentence for contribution is Arrigo Sacchi with his 1980s AC Milan teams. This is the unfortunate truth.

What makes Fergie so unique to other top managers is the way he was able to remain at one club and rebuild the squad into a title winning team multiple times, and still keep them competitive during these rebuilding phases.
Pep walks away before he has to do this so we never see him tested in this way.
Fergie also survived at the top through different eras and seem off multiple rival teams and managers with completely different styles of football, most managers struggle to adapt when the game changes.
Also look at the state of some of the players he was winning trophies with in his last few years, to be winning league titles with players like Phil Jones and Tom cleverley in the team is a fairly big achievement.
Also had to deal with the glazers in his last 7/8 years in charge.
The fact the club has failed so miserably since he retired just shows how much of a difference he made there.
If pep leaves Man City I don’t think it makes much of a difference to their results, they’d still be in the title race every year.

This is ridiculous claim! Pep won trophies with THAT group of players, another manager took over and won trophies with them, third manager took over and won with them. Bayern always are crowned as champions! And what has Pep invented in England? It used to be called tinkering, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. And don’t get me started on producing players through the academy.
