I don't think I've ever said how great I find your Tamiya Legends video ident, in all its 1980s 'VHS tape playing in a model shop' glory.

Ditch the FRP and go Carbon on the shock towers. Consider running a front shock tower on the rear as the suspension travel on the front and rear is about the same. DF-02 Metal diffs fit. Also get the rear 1 degree alloy rear hubs.

TT-01 and TT-02 are surprisingly versatile chassis that can handle some serious abuse not to mention the amount of parts available for them both official and unofficial is awesome cant remember who makes them but there are alloy oil filled diffs available for both TT-01 and TT-02 and sure if you'd be interested for this project but there is now TT-02 carbon fibre lower deck and alloy diff housings on ebay similar to the chassis you used on the bling project

Hey Glen, as a TT-02 nutter, I’ll be following this series.
In my opinion, if you can’t get/afford the genuine Tamiya Universals, I suggest the Yeah Racing ones. Compared to some of the GPM stuff you can get anywhere, they’re a little more consistent in fit, the quality is about bang on with Tamiya and they’re really, really affordable. Used their G45 axles and drive cups on mine and I couldn’t be happier. Saved about $70USD going with the Yeah Racing parts instead of the Tamiya ones.
Also, funny thing the TT-02R comes with a 27T pinion so to anyone buying the High Speed Gear Set with the 68T spur, change to the TB-03/FF03 27T pinion. I would say you’d be okay to use any 48P pinion but I’ve had issues with the gears themselves being sized differently than the Tamiya ones (Yeah Racing Delrin spurs are smaller than the Tamiya 48P/06mod) so be aware if no information exists on whether you can use a particular pinion and spur set of varying brands. I have used the Yeah Racing hard coated aluminum pinion in one of my cars and it’s certainly better than the stock Tamiya one. Tamiya DO make hard coated pinions but good luck finding any actually for sale. Amain Hobbies ProTek line of 48P pinions would be a good option and some people have used them too which is good because Yeah Racing doesn’t have a 27T option for Tamiya, only 26T. *Edit: they do make a 27T 48P pinion but they don’t say it works with Tamiya though I’m quite sure it will.
You may also have to use the adjustable Yeah Racing or similar motor mount for a non-Tamiya combination gear set to work properly. Again, use non-Tamiya gears in your own TT-02 at your own risk!
Lastly, as blingy as the aluminum steering set is for the TT-02 really is, there is a benefit to it. On the standard TT-02, the steering absolutely SUCKS and the aluminum steering set as expensive as it may seem, makes the steering tighter and more precise. I can’t recommend it enough for anyone looking into the TT-02. You will have to use Loctite on the threads of the grub screws holding the steering posts in place if you do get the upgrade though. Mine didn’t need it but just a heads up if you get it as the posts were a bane to get to fit exactly as the included manual said. Took two hours of fiddling to get it just right and that was just the steering posts!
While on the subject of steering, get the steering servo mount. Not the RM-01 right side mounts but the actual servo mount designed for the TT-02. Along with the servo saver, the car will feel more precise as the servo won’t have a chance to flex as much as it would on the stock plastic mounts.
Anyways Glen, stellar job and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the Neo Scorcher.

What a cool project!! I raced for about 8 years back in late '80's - early '90's (RC10, Ultima, CAT) and I absolutely loved it. Today, the nearest track is very far away so I just run on a backyard track but I really miss competing with my racer buds.
Anyway, I recently built a Neo Scorcher and I'm quite impressed with it; for a cheap 4wd, it's not bad. Very much looking forward to this series. Oh, and I actually like the Neo Scorcher body set but I'm certain what you have planned will look awesome. 👍😊

Last year I was playing around with my DualRidge, I think I made 2-3 videos about it, but it was more of a speedrun thing... I did replace the steering components to all aluminium and turnbuckles, and it did help a lot, so I think you chose right by getting those parts, it's not just bling.

This is a really nice approach and thanks for doing this. I think it's a great project especially to see what kind of capability a properly set up TT02B can do-on a track with other modern race spec buggies. Your thoughts on getting a modern race buggy as a test car (and probably for track practice and benchmarking) is a great one. Good luck and looking forward to the future update video!

EXCELLENT project - really looking forward to seeing you drive on track as much as the cars you'll use. Super good luck!
It'd be great to see this run on track before you add any further upgrades so we have a "true" baseline to work up from e.g. prove if the FRP shock towers, turnbuckles, etc. really make a performance difference (or a strength, running cost benefit).
Personally I'd love to see you use this shell and wing and do a Terra Scorcher livery. I'm sure it'll make it at least 5 seconds quicker per lap ;-)

Wow, I built basically the exact same car during lockdown. Same parts you mentioned, but also with the hi speed gear set, 3degree rear hubs and df03(?) metal diffs and a hard black chassis.... I also built a AE B74 to race as the TT02 was just a basher buggy to chase my son's Lunchbox around. Damn thing ended up costing about the same as the (admittedly heavily discounted) Associated 4wd. Not really compared them to drive yet, but I was intending to have a blast on the track with the Tamiya at some point.

I've started a similar project with my neo scorcher, alloy shaft, cups, steering so far but I went with the carbon fibre shock towers as they were only a few more $$s than the frp ones. I also went alloy lower front arms as the ball studs kept pulling out of the plastic ones.

Thats just Amazing Glenn, How ironic ive just ordered another TT02B Myself Happining to be the Neo Scorcher and plan was to run it as the other TT02B ive got is the PLasma Edge 2 with almost every option in blue alloy and also ordered those new TTo2b/DF03 shockers but the plasma edge 2 was a shelfie and i always wanted to run it but too scared to scratch it up but now's my chance to build exactly what you've got in the pipeline an actual runner with constant progression to better and better performance - now im excited lol , also would love to take this to a track only 20 mins down the road being an off road would be grreat fun , im sure and would also like to see how the 415MS takes the track on the on road side of things , gotta get out and use and enjoy beside being stuck inside building and just building and buying up more and more ok enough blubber from me now thanks again Glenn for Putting OOffmphh back into the simple not stupid crazy expensive side of RC and how much fun it can be thats just Superb :-))

Awesome Glenn, looking forwards to this little project. Tamiya make a stiffer glass fiber reinforced chassis for these as well, the white special TT-02 kit came with a white one (obviously) and I believe it comes supplied with a couple of the other on road TT-02 Chassis. TT-02SR definitely, looking at mine right now! It does weigh a few grams more than the plain ABS but it's another tuning aid if needed. Hey, greetings from germany...
Great challenge and a great idea to do the TT-02B project. IMHO, you should think about the alloy steering, for which you have to order Hopups 54574 and 54575. These come with ballbearings, what makes steering more precise.
And: If I change my wheels, i hated how often the pins fall out, so i ordered Hopup 9404205, and i´m very happy with them.... Tried aftermarket-parts, but at least i always ended up ordering original Tamiya Hopups.

Glenn the shock towers as you say are a must have. The rear suspension especially does not work properly without it. The steering upgrade does make a difference. It rotates on ball races instead of step screws.

  • @theoagrc
    @theoagrc Před 2 lety +2

Sounds like a great plan Glenn. Looks like a nice build to work from. I didn’t realise that the carbon shock towers come with adjustable turnbuckles so that is one thing off my shopping list. Be interested to see what benefit you make of the steering links with the bearings as I was winding if that would make any difference. I have also been researching tyres for the dirt track in my back yard but I have some time to consider as upgrades are not planned until next winter. I will be following your progress on this one closely my friend! All the best 👍🏻🙌🏻

Great project! It's a shame there does not seem to be a TT02B or DT02 race series in the UK. Especially for Juniors it would be a great way into the hobby. What King of Clubs is doing with Tamiya Junior E is brilliant I think. Need something similar for buggies!

A 13.5 turn brushless setup on 3s makes these things pretty fast. Plus thae same motor could do double duty if you do decide to race as well if the track has a 13.5 class for 4wd buggy.

Hi Glenn good luck with the project, I did race a tt02bms for a while and got some reasonable results against better buggy’s with it. I did add the full c-shaped servo mount to mine as it helps the servo from flexing about. I did put uj’s all round and run aeration dampers as well. Tyres will be critical on carpet when you race it I used Schumacher cactus on the rear and cactus fusion on the front. Maybe there using proline pin points or prisms as a preferred choice in Canada ? Anyway good to see how it progresses , good luck :)

The indoor tracks there, are they carpet, clay, or turf? We have a new carpet track about an hour and a half from me (I live rural so everywhere is an hour or more).
Seems 2wd is almost as fast in carpet, so if you haven't already gotten the race kit, maybe check out some of the stuff at the track, maybe 2wd would be a cheaper start? I have not been to the new track yet, it just opened last Tuesday...amd have never raced on carpet, but have looked up a bunch in the last month or so... have a look at it online if you have FB, HRCR, Hayden RC Raceway...
Been watching Tamiya videos and retro RC videos...looking to pick up a couple/few retro style rigs for the collection, hopefully a Tamiya or 2, and at least one Kyosho like an Ultima ? Hard to decide to buy a Tamiya ReRe when they haven't put them out with steering fixes, slippers and gears to handle mild brushless, oil shocks and bearings still not in some... maybe I just am spoiled by modern kits and what I hope for would be like a Tamiya (Iconic Name Here) Mk2 Deluxe or something ...
Any Tamiyas that you can recommend for someone spoiled by modern kits? There's so many Tamiya rigs that are recognizable, why they don't put out a more modern buggy with Grasshopper or other livery, a monster truck chassis with a Lunchbox/Pumpkin/Beetle, or...??? It's just beyond me and I can't understand, those would probably sell a LOT to people who remember the old kits, but want something to get their kids or even grand kids o start their journey into RC....
    Cheers.
