In August of 2021, as the nation of Afghanistan collapsed, the US deployed a handful of its most skilled and versatile special operations force, Air Force Combat Controllers, to control the final evacuation of Kabul.
Would love to read a book from AFSOCs perspectives during the Kabul withdrawal. Only first person accounts I've seen/heard was from a couple of PJs on the Ones Ready CZcams channel who were there.
that is a troubled part of the world, there is no room for democracy there, people don't want it nor they accept others forcing it on them, this is more clear when you think of afghan military. How a well equipped force just ran away without the fight and accepted the taliban.
The Afghan forces wanted to fight, but unfortunately, they received an order not to fight and surround themselves. The former Afghan officials blamed the president.
A little air support and artillery from Bagram instead of Kabul could have ended with better results. Then again, who's to say what the bigger picture is. I've heard that the Chinese weren't as welcomed as once they figured on and also there's been fighting with the Iranians though supposedly only because of water supply. Politics caused the insanity of the withdrawal. When leaving equipment behind, you don't give hammers to Marines. You use explosives or incendeniary grenades on vital components. Was a fools mistake to have stayed for 20 years and arm up Afghans that frequently enough had situations of Taliban sympathizers turn on their comrades and US forces. Too many NVGs and body armor left behind but there were far more sensitive things left such as biometric devices with information on Nationals that were in the service against Taliban and terrorists.
Fun fact for anyone reading this: Dan Schilling was in AirForce Special Warfare so he is so good at telling these due to being one of them.
