In '99, I at a Moody concert in Las Vegas, after Ray finished singing "Legend of a Mind" my girl friend & I remained standing after the applause died down & yelled "I love you Ray": the Audience again stood & gave him another round of applause :So later Ray is introducing "For My lady" He stops and walks over to where we sitting and says "No - this is for my 2 ladies" a treasured memory

Thank you for this Harri. And you've touched on why Moody Blues fans are so loyal to the band, their core 7 albums had something for everyone. So many sounds and moods, but all done terrifically. As someone mentioned, this was written and sung by the flautist Ray Thomas. In the early albums all members wrote songs for the band.

I've always said the true measure of a singer or band isn't their hits - it's the songs that fill the rest of the album. There was a time when albums were filled out with generally mindless fluff. When The Beatles came along, they changed that attitude and it became the norm that every song on an album was meant to entertain, even if wasn't considered strong enough for single release. Making great albums became an art form and The Moody Blues were always amongst the best artists of their time.

Spot on. I often find the "fill" songs on Moody albums to be the pick-of-the-bunch. Songs like 'Dawning is the Day', "Visions of Paradise', Nice to Be Here', 'Candle of Life', 'Emily's Song'... just to name a few. So many great works filled all their great albums.

Here they are treating their lady like Lakshmi. One story of Lakshmi was that she rose up from the sea after chrning of the oceas - here The Moody Blues referred to it as wading through the stormy seas to see his lady.

To me, this sounds like a sea shanty. You sing about your love back in England, but also, the gentle lady could be the ship itself...❤🎉Love The Moodies...all their music is haunting, melodic, and somewhat melancholy. But that is what makes it so memorable and beautiful

  • @frankpentangeli7945
    @frankpentangeli7945 Před rokem +13

Part of the reason the Moodies always sound so different is that they have 5 different songwriters and 4 singers, plus one who doesn't sing but writes and reads poems. The man who wrote this song is Ray Thomas, who also wrote many other beautiful songs, including The Tide Rushes In, Our Guessing Game, Eternity Road, Twilight Time and Dear Diary (among others).
All Moody Blues songs should really be listened in the context of full album listens ... that is how their magic really comes to life.

  • @warriorempathshealingfromn5625

Thank you Harri, for covering For My Lady. The Moody Blues from 1966 to 72 is considered the classic core 7 albums. There are 7 and each have a theme to them. I really think you would enjoy listening to each of these albums, start at Days of Future Passed and end with 7th Sojourn. You will see that all 5 members contribute to each album and each member has different personality and there for the music may sound different to you. 4 vocalists which gave them that excellent harmony that they are known for. When you listen to these cor 7 albums (there are more) you begin to get to know the music of the Moody Blues. Back in the day, I was fortunate to speak with drummer Graeme Edge (RIP) and he said that in his opinion, John Lodge's music was the music of the Moody Blues. He said that John's music was the best at representing the Moodies as a band. I know most people, will disagree with this and say that Justin Hayward is the Voice of the Moody Blues as he did write more songs and had the most radio hits but I do think that John's music is the most collaborative.

    • @keithjones7390

For me it doesn't really matter which member of the band wrote a favourite song, on the whole it is Justin's songs l love the most, with New Horizons being their best ever song. Having said that the whole band contributed many wonderful songs which l have enjoyed so much for the last 50 odd years.

@@keithjones7390 Yes, I love New Horizons. It did seem that Justin got the spot light but there were 4 others who contributed to Moody Blues music and when speaking with Graeme, he was serious that John was more of a person who included all of the band in his song writing and spoke to who and what the Moodies are and were. Graeme was very passionate about this and I was there with Graeme and Gordy in 1997 and I was sworn to secrecy as there was a major disagreement with the band as regards to who would be representing them. Graeme had gone to John to talk some sense with Justin in regards to this. It was regarded by Graeme that John was the only one who could talk to Justin. I didn't run into Graeme again following this conversation but I assume this woman was not hired. I was married to a R&R musician and I hung out with musicians and the one thing I know is that band members are like family, there is jealousy and competition amongst them. Of course they love each other and there is respect but I haven't known a band that doesn't argue and have issues and the Moodies were the same. I don't know what actually went on between Justin and John but I don't think we will ever see them perform together again.

There's a good chance you're mostly familiar with the songs Justin Hayward wrote, a lot of his songs have a somewhat similar feel and he sings them. This is a Ray Thomas song, he also sings it, and his songwriting style was different. Mike Pinder also wrote a few, John Lodge as well, but Justin and Ray wrote most, at least in those earlier days. It’s such a romantic song, with an air of chivalry. Someone said romance is more for men than it is for women. It sounds counterintuitive but it’s probably true.

Every member of the band was a songwriter and on most albums they would trade off lead vocals. I always thought this reminded me a bit of an Irish sea shanty.

This Is the Moody Blues. When you get to be a fan of them for decades & decades like I have.. and see them in concert over & over, you will hear them evolve through every decade, then you will really know the Moody Blues. All of us change & evolve. Usually, the band member who wrote the song would be the one who would sing it and Ray Thomas, the flutist wrote this one. I can't say that only Ray was the romantic one in the band, because Justin Hayward wrote "Nights in White Satin" and you can't get more romantic than that. Justin Hayward announced that after Graeme Edge's retirement, the Moody Blues no longer existed. Plz. react to "New Horizon"; so many of your subs love that song, including me. RIP Ray & Graeme. U R missed. xx

I agree totally, there were so many great bands in the wonderful era of the 70's, for me (probably partly due to my age) there hasn't been a better time for music. The Moody Blues have always been in my top five bands of all time, their music is timeless and l still enjoy listening to them to this day. The song New Horizons has been mentioned by subscribers in this review, it's my favourite MB song, and has been since l heard it almost 50 years ago.

Not surprising you might not recognize this as being from the Moody Blues. To me, it invokes the sound of a "sea shanty" with the instrumentals. Also it is Ray Thomas singing lead and not Justin Hayward as one might expect. Elsewhere today I suggested you check out "The Day We Meet Again".

Do yourself a favor. Just sit down and listen to the first seven Moody Blues albums straight through. Then listen to a side project album two of them (Hayward and Lodge) did called the Blue Jays. That Hayward and Lodge Blue Jays album has one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It’s called “I Dreamed Last Night.”

I agree with everyone on the core albums. But in my option their next three albums (Octave, The Present and Long Distance Voyager) are very strong. I don’t think that they get the respect that they deserve. Yes, you can hear little more of a move to commercial music. And the concept album was disappearing. But don’t sell these albums short. Also, Blue Jays by Hayward and Lodge was incredible. I have never heard anyone else express this, so I must be alone in this opinion. Enjoy your Moody Blues reviews Harri!

You're not alone at all. Octave, LDV, and The Present are great works. (In fact, my favorite "late Moodies" song is 'It's Cold Outside of Your Heart', from The Present.) But for whatever reason, they don't quite measure up to the Core-7. Close, but not quite. As for "Blue Jays"... simply a masterpiece.

I'd love to know if that clanking noise belongs in the recording. It sounds out of place, like someone dropped a cymbal or ringing a bell.
It comes right as he's singing "and slowly bow her head".
