I recently watched the full concert on CZcams Moody Blues Live at Albert Hall. It is amazing. They are one of my all time favorite bands. It was released 1972. Their music pulls at my heartstrings like no other band.
I've had the CD of the Concert for years. I also watched the performance on CZcams.
Man I'm nearly in tears.
Dear old Ray in the coda almost pushed me to waterworks at the end.

This is a 1972 song written by bassist John Lodge and specially arranged for this 2000 concert tour by their conductor Larry Baird. I love it for the beautiful flute performance by the late multi-instrumentalist Ray Thomas (who, by the way, has a wonderful singing voice). It was sung by John Lodge and Justin Hayward ("Nights in White Satin").
Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for mentioning Ray Thomas. He is my hero of the band. In 1975 and 1976 I bought his albums "From Mighty Oaks" and "Hopes, Wishes and Dreams. I played the heck out of them. This weekend I will listen to them again after probably more than 20 years. - Brooklyn Mike

@@michaelplotino7046 Do you know why Ray didn't sing any song on the RAH show? IMHO, "Celtic Sonant" would sound way better in that show than "Lean on Me" (both from Keys of the Kingdom album).
There would be many rock fans that love 60's and 70's music who would say that the Moody Blues were up there with the very best. Their music sounds just as wonderful today!
I think there would be a lot more then many. :D I don't know anyone that didn't love The Moody Blues back in the day. :)

Back in the 90's my wife and I would go most every summer to the Jones Beach Theater and see "The Moody Blues" preform with the Long Island Philharmonic

The first time I saw The Moody Blues was in the mid '80s .
When John Lodge started plaing the funky bass riff for I'm Just a Singer in a R&R Band he was standing back by his amps and the intro went on for several bars past the record version . I don't know if Justin Hayward or someone else gave him a look , but I remember John shaking his head as if to say " Oh shit , I sing this song ".He ran to his mike and started singing . I love seeing things like that . It proves that great musicians are human .
I didn't appreciate the beauty of this music when I was growing up with it, because EVERYTHING was beautiful back then. Today, though, in my 60's I look back at it and really appreciate the how beautiful this music was, and I thank my lucky stars that I was able to grow up with it being the soundtrack of my life.

I love this version/performance. I have seen the Moodies live with orchestra multiple times, and they were always fantastic. I usually felt bad leaving their shows as I felt there was more music that needed to be heard, and I didn't want it to end. So sad that we can never see them live again. RIP Ray and Graeme.
Their themes were always so deep.. The nature of life and death, how time is perceived, and how it affects our decisions. Their music matching the magic of their lyrics

I love Moody Blues and this is one of my favorites. I had the great fortune to see them live at a great outdoor concert in Foxboro, MA. I think it was late 70’s. What a great experience! 🌺✌️

I remember this song being played occasionally on the radio in Detroit in the 70s. While living in England in 1981, I heard this on the radio in a taxi in Cambridge. I can still recall how the sun shone in that late afternoon. It’s funny how the mind connects certain things and imprints them on our soul.
What a wonderful sound and image to have in your memory, 0dysseus. l still remember a rainy late afternoon in November, 1969, driving home from university on winding S. Arroyo Blvd., passing the green house with its 3rd floor loft window, and "The Actor" playing on my VW's radio. It was easy to imagine Justin creating that haunting, ultimately sad song up there on a day just as that one. Now, fifty-three years later, though I don't live in Pasadena anymore, I can still see that loft window on a rainy afternoon, and remember the girl whose "mind tries to recall his face" and I wonder if, looking out a window in Nice or Geneva, she can, as I still do. Thank you for this, Justin ... thank you, Moodies.

Moody Blues are so amazing. I've been listening to them for 50 years. What an awesome concert they put on. I've had the privilege of seeing them live twice. This song was released in 1972.
I started seeing the Moody Blues in Madison Square Garden back in 1972, I believe, and I long ago lost count of how many times I've seen them since, probably around 30, finally in Saratoga in 2017 on their 50th anniversary tour for Days of Future Passed. I missed Mike Pinder ever since he left the band, and still mourn for Ray Thomas (and recently Graeme Edge), but I'm so thankful for CZcams and my huge collection of Moody Blues vinyl, cassettes, CDs... not a day goes by that I don't listen to the Moodies. Much appreciated, Harri... keep 'em coming!
This was from the Seventh Sojourn album which came out in 1972. The album version uses a Chamberlin to do the orchestral parts. The Chamberlin is similar to the mellotron in that it uses taped versions of instruments which are assigned to play when keys are pressed on the keyboard. It doesn't store the sounds digitally but actually plays the notes from strip of audio tape.
Hi Brian. I’m a long time Moodies fan and I have a Mellotron. I have played an M1 Chamberlin, I believe Mike Pinder had an M4 for Seventh Sojourn. Not many people know Mike played Chamberlin on that album…so glad I have someone who knows on here.
Magnificent. I saw them around '05 at Tower City Amphitheater in Cleveland. One of my bucket list bands. This was a wonderful version. Thanks!

I have been privileged to see them in concert several times, not many years ago, here in Oxford in England, with these very same band members, Including the younger drummer.

One of those songs that highlights how John Lodge's emoting and range, Justin Hayward's beautiful and fewer than once in a generation exceptional voice and the late great Ray Thomas's powerful vocals blended and worked so well together.
Seventh Sojourn is definitely a desert island album for me. Every song is a gem, and Isn't Life Strange is my favorite. I wore this album out on my turntable back in the 70s
Seventh Sojourn is a wonderful album, but for me To Our Children's....... just has the edge, side 2 (I'm thinking of the vinyl copy) is just superb, a series of their very best songs. Seventh Sojourn isn't quite as consistent, with I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band not being my favourite song of their's despite a lot of comments from subscribers saying how great it is! 😀 Moodies a rock and roll band? Mmmmmm.I have to say though that New Horizons from SS is one of my very favourite songs (from anybody) it's such a beautiful track, loved it from the moment I heard it.
@@keithjones7390 I interpret I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll band as being ironic. Like it was something that a critic would say, "what do you know, you're just a singer in a rock and roll band..." It took me years before i realised this and now the song has a different meaning altogether.
Seventh Sojourn and Octave and of course Nights in White Satin are my favorite albums. Pretty much every song on all 3 are great.
A song so earth-shattering and emotional, especially this version, my favorite version. Even though I've heard the song many times, by the end it brought me to tears.

Great review man. I was a young kid when the album The Seventh sojourn was released. My older brother got it and we were listening to it for the first time. This song is one of my all time favorites from anyone because of the emotion you feel from it. This is a great song John lodge wrote.
hope you took the time to listen to the full studio version of this awesome song because without it, there is a lot of musical emotion missing from the studio version
I saw the Moody Blues in concert in 1986 in Minneapolis. Great concert. Their biggest "new" song back then was, "In Your Wildest Dreams" which is also a great song. I would also suggest, "The Voice" and "The Story In Your Eyes".

One of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love all the Moody Blues songs. This song was on their 1972 album "Seventh Sojourn". Another great song from that album is "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)". Love the mix of rock & classical music. Most of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to from start to finish. A lot of them go from one song into another without a complete break. Sadly we just lost Graeme Edge their drummer Nov 11/21.

This song was on their 1972 album Seventh Sojourn, hence their seventh album together. You can listen to it on CZcams. All the songs are great on that album/record. The songs "You and Me" and "Lost in a Lost World" are very good songs as well including all the rest including the song you played "Instant Love Strange". The original recordings are EXCELLENT!

Released in 1972 with just the band (no orchestra) using flute & Chamberlin (early tape sampler similar to the Mellotron). An orchestral version (which this arrangement was based upon) was recorded and released in 1989.

We are so lucky to have it. I would very much like to see your reaction to one of the least well known songs in the performance. The song is called "Haunted." Isn't Life Strange" is a 1972 single by the English progressive rock band the Moody Blues, which was based on Pachelbel's Canon In D. Written by bassist John Lodge, it was the first of two singles released from their 1972 album Seventh Sojourn, with the other being "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)",

This is from the album 7th Sojourn and the orchestral sound was originally created with Mike Pinder's mellotron and Ray Thomas's flute. The Moodies added a orchestra for their 1992 appearance at Red Rocks in Colorado. It was filmed for a PBS special. They toured for 2 or 3 years using a orchestra from the city they were playing in. This was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall and a live album and DVD were released of this concert. Of course John Lodge is the writer of this song. You can hear John singing lead all the way through in his more recent concert releases and on tour prior to covid. Also, I have been excited to hear John sing lead through out Candle of Life, it's great. Prior to covid John was quite active on the tour scene and is starting to tour this month and in the beginning of April he will appear at the Flower Power cruise.

** 15 years ago...I was in Michigan, USA, worked at my brother-in-law's Seafood shop..the bass-player of MOODY BLUES (John Lodge) just..showed-up and asked me .." May I Have 2 pounds of cracked stone Crab?" ..I looked at him and replied .."HEY! You're John Lodge!" .. he replied .."Yes, I know" ..( and He let me shake his hand!)
That's so cool! As many times as I've seen them in concert, I've never met any of them. It would have been nice to meet them at the RRHOF when they were all back together. Except Ray, that is. RIP.

It's rare to hear a "live" version that's as good as the original. Though I didn't know it when I heard this on the radio in 1972, the studio version was recorded using a Chamberlin, which was the original American instrument which spawned the Mellotron (popularized by the Beatles), via a chain of deception and corporate intrigue, in place of the full orchestra we hear on this version. Chamberlin was an entrepreneur who invented the tape-based sampling keyboard in the late 1940s and worked with Lawrence Welk to create a library of samples for it. He didn't like Rock&Roll and saw no reason why his instrument should be portable, so one of his salesmen got impatient and shipped a stolen Chamberlin to Birmingham, England, where he convinced an unwitting manufacturer to develop a portable version of "his" invention. When he got caught, tense negotiations led to a cross-licensing agreement under which Mellotrons could only be sold outside the USA. As it happens, Mike Pinder, later of the Moody Blues, worked in the factory where Mellotrons were developed and produced, making him intimately knowledgeable of the instrument and its history.

This is from the Seventh Sojourn album. I love all their albums, but Seventh Sojourn is my most loved. In my twenties, the early seventies, I heard this album once. Lines and phrases of music drifted in and out of my mind for years after, until I added Seventh Sojourn to my collection and found what I had been hearing all those years. For me, all that added production is unnecessary. I love the simpler song that it was. I strongly suggest you get Seventh Sojourn for your own collection, you won't regret it. Every song is unforgettable.
The first Moody Blues album l bought was This is the Moody Blues, a best of album.l was so impressed with it went on to buy the albums from Days of Future Passed upto Seventh Sojourn. I have bought a few post Sojourn LP'S and they are very good, but they just lack something compared with their earlier albums. My favourite album is To Our Children's....... ,side 2 is absolutely wonderful. However my favourite song is from Seventh Sojourn, it's New Horizons, loved the song from the first time I heard it, l love lots of their great songs, but NH is the one!

There first album was Go Now , and had a fussy blue felt cover. I still have that album today. not a pop or gravel on it . i dont play it very often but when i do there has to be somebody with me who never heard it before. i love playing it when younger people are around to see their reaction.
The Moody Blues were a more mature Beatles, and in some ways they were a continuation of the Beatles spirit of peace, love, mind-expansion, and the more responsible hippie vibe. They were and are medicine for the soul, more than any other band, though close to Yes in their healing abilities, and general ameliorative effect on the listener.
You cannot go wrong with the Moody Blues.
