So, I just got done ripping the heater core out in my 2015 Passat. All the directions are correct, except here you dont have to disconnect anything under the hood. Take the plastics off, unplug the big plug held by one screw. To unplug it, you have to pull the little red clip out beforehand. If you can't wiggle the connections apart- Cut the aluminum hoses off and twist them off with pliers. Remove one screw, one clip, and the heater core slides right out. Dont forget to have some towels and a plastic bottle cut in half to catch the coolant. You will get around 300ml of it spilling all over the place.
You saved me a lot of money and headache my guy. Thank you again!
Good info. Thank you.
Thanks for helping out , got the part at the vw dealer, and they want $750 canadian approx.for just labor😮 with me, getting the part and you bud.. I'm saving money
Great instructions, thank you. Would you do a coolant system flush after you install the new heater core? Just top off on coolant and monitor level until all the air escapes the system? I'm worried about pushing more existing sludge into the new heater core.
Thanks man, Flushing system before and after is a good idea
I noticed my heater barely getting warm AFTER I added Bar's Stop Leak to the overflow reservoir a few months back because I have a slow water pump leak. (I didn't have $2500 for a water pump replacement!)
The water pump seems to be a very slow leak now, but not sure if Bar's clogged the heater core...🤬
I wonder if radiator flush stuff will unclog the heater core...? 🤔
Sometimes it helps, worth a try
So you don’t have to remove the whole center console??
Do you have to bleed the system for air afterward? If so, what is the procedure?
I usually use a vacuum coolant bleeder setup, if not top off the coolant and bring it up to operating temp and let it cool off. It will likely burp it up while cooling
You didn't have to loosen a screw on the engine side before pulling heater core?
THIS. I need answers
@shon8659 I usually don’t, there have been times where the tubes under the dash fight and I end up doing that but typically I dont
How loose. Does it give it a little give when trying to resemble
What are the symptoms? Got a '14 Passat that barely has heat and seems to be worse on the passengers side. Not getting any codes for position sensors and have run the motor reset procedure through VCDS. This is definitely easier than previous VW's that required the whole dash to come out.
What your saying sounds like classic symptoms on that model
It going. That’s what happened to mine for about yr before it went
I have an egr cooler performance code and not much heat just bought the car knowing this could be an issue just not one month in 😂
Do u know if it's the same heater on a 2016 passat Alltrack? I see there are 2 different types, one with those extension tubes, and one without🤔
I’m not sure off hand, I would have to look that up
@@EuropeanAutoRepair yeah not even Volkswagen could tell me which one I have. So I guess I need to look it up😂 thanks
@@EuropeanAutoRepair it was the same with the number 5Q0819031A.
Ahh I hope the job goes smoothly
Why do you have to disconnect the coolant hoses in the engine bay? Just to keep a bunch of coolant from dumping inside the car?
That’s it, just to blow the coolant out of the core so you don’t make a mess
Thank you!
Would it be the same for a 2015 GTI? And no need to flush the coolant right?
@philipgordon8262 very similar job
Do you need to drain the whole cooling system for this job?
Nope, just pull the heater hoses off at the firewall and that’s it, you won’t loose too much
@European Auto Repair my car is a mk7 golf though actually so would that be any different? It all looks pretty much the same
Just about the same thing if I’m remembering right
Hi im not able to connect the upper pipe any solution for that
Are you having a problem with the vband clamp or the tubes not joining each other?
@@EuropeanAutoRepair tubes not joining each other there is a coolant leak in upper pipe
Any luck? Exact same thing happening to me
Sometimes you can use a pliers on the edge of the vbands to squeeze them together when they are close and the hold the tubes in place with one hand while putting the clamp on with the other, its a good idea to use a mirror to check that the clamp is on correctly
Hi there !
Great job 👏
Can you tell me how many hours of labor you need to have the job completed ?
Thank you 🙏
I’m pretty sure its around 3 labor hours, I’d have to look up the particular car to find that exact book time
If it helps, i had your exact same case of barely any heat turning into no heat, checked out every actuator manually, they all work, VCDS didnt detect anything, i calibrated the actuators and still no heat.
When i removed the heater core, i flushed it and put it back in, the water had no resistance moving through it but STILL NO HEAT!
I replaced the entire heater core with a new one from rockauto and FINALLY it heats like a furnace. Shows that all problems sometimes dont make that much sense.
After replacement, it took a bit of time for the heat to come back. Even if the car was warmed up, it took like 10 km of driving for it to come.
As to connect the pipes back, it was a hassle so i ended up using a radiator tube and metal clips that you turn a screw to tighten to bridge the tiny gap between the heater core and the tubes.
Yeah those tiny vbands can definitely put up a fight
@@abrahamsalamah5773 Where did you get your heater core? Did it come with green o-rings? If so, there lies the problem; too large a diameter to join those pipe together. Use the black one that come with the v-bands, the ones you get from the dealer, and will fit correctly and smooth. Do not forget to put some dielectric grease or any other lube that will not harm the o-rings.
@@mlaautomotivellc9327
Oh boy, I gave up on that after seeing the radiator tube and clip hack. Had to use 2 clips per side but its holding real good.
These pipes....
They vibrate if close or loose?
I have never seen it
Im not sure if you were replacing your heater core as preventative maintenance or because you actually had a problem. However the TSB from volkswagen says this is only an issue with the CKRA engine models (13-14 passat tdi's).
Thanks good info, yeah It was replaced to restore heat to the passenger side of vehicle
Every mechanic I’ve been too told me that this job takes a day or two and try to charge me $1000+
That’s bonkers, what year and model?
@@EuropeanAutoRepair 2015 Passat TDI SE
@@jasonfooter8456 I’d try another shop, book time is 2.9 hours, list price for heater core is under 100 if I remember correctly
2011-2014 takes a long time. 2015 is easy access
I've had quotes from 2 shops today for around $1000. Mine's a 2015 Golf Mk7 TDI SE. I may try to do this job myself. Did have the coolant system flushed 3 months ago when a failed coolant hose adapter failed and replaced at dealership. Maybe I don't need to flush system completely?
Geez i wish the mk4 was this easy 😕
Hah that one’s not as fun
Not fair, you didn’t have to remove the entire dashboard. Too easy!
Haha I lucked out
Dude this video gave me anxiety. Slow the f down. Camera is all over the joint.
Hahah COFFEE
