Roy Tarpley: The Most Accomplished Tragedy of the 1986 NBA Draft | FPP

  • The 1986 NBA draft is the draft of “what ifs” with guys like Len Bias, Chris Washburn and William Bedford all seeing addiction ruin their careers, but there’s one more player from that draft whose career met the same fate, and that’s Roy Tarpley, yet Tarpley was slightly different. Bias passed before playing an NBA game, and Washburn and Bedford were very underwhelming. But Roy Tarpley, excelled when he was playing. He went from a constantly improving four year player with the Michigan Wolverines, spending his senior season alongside a freshman Glen Rice. He would be a top 10 draft pick by the Dallas Mavericks led by Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman, and in his first season would make the all rookie team, then in year 2 he would be voted 1988 Sixth Man of the Year while being an integral piece during the Dallas Mavericks 1988 Western Conference Finals run. But after this, he would play less than 70 games combined over the next three seasons. He would be suspended for drug and alcohol related offenses multiple times as an addiction was engulfing his life, until he received a lifetime Ban in 1991, over the next couple of years, he would dominate in other league’s throughout the US and Europe before being lucky enough to get one more chance and return to the Mavericks for ’95 season, where he was a veteran on a young Dallas team featuring Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn, but after a solid comeback season, he received another lifetime ban for alcohol related offenses, and would never play in the NBA again. Roy Tarpley was the ultimate hustle player from the beginning and was consistently refining his skills on the offensive and defensive side of the ball every year. It was a matter of when he would be considered a star, not if, but before that could happen, his addiction won over and ruined the career of someone who could have been one of the top players in the league.

Dwayne "The Pearl" Washington died of cancer at the age of 52 ...... all of the other tragic figures from that 1986 were not "cursed", they chose to take the path of drugs and alcohol, and ruined their own lives.

He was truly on his way to becoming a star in this league. His second year was so huge and that Mavs team took the Lakers to the brink that season. If he did not have these issues the Mavs would not have fallen off as far as they did and would have still one of the top teams out West for longer. He had the skills to truly be a Hall Of Fame talent. He had all the skills a big man needed and he was one of the best ball handling big men of his era, he handled the ball better than some wings back then. It is sad what drugs does to people!!

No doubt about it. Most talented big to ever wear a Maverick uni imvho, and that includes Dirk. The game came easy for him, and I don't think he ever had a significant stretch in his career where it was a primary focus.

That Mavericks team was loaded and should have won a few championships. Now I have a better understanding of why that didn’t happen.
    RIP Tarp.

He never got away from addictions. After leaving the NBA he came to play in Greece. Multiple coaches and teammates were saying how many beer cans they were finding in Roys room. He was showing up in practices late borderline drunk.
Having 10-12 beers the night before a game... and he was still amazing to watch.
such a sad story for such a great talent.

Awesome video but such a sad story ,Roy Tarpley was on the way to greatness. His career was cut short but when he delivered it was awesome ,a rebounding machine ,a defensive anchor and no slouch on scoring .If he had a much longer time in the NBA he would have been a perennial all star

Great mini doc/story! Sad one. I'm a Laker fan and Tarpley was scary. You could see the Mavs coming on and he was the key but those suspensions kept derailing them. The multiple "lifetime" bans were always confusing.

I definitely remember Tarpley on those Michigan teams and those really fun and good Mavs teams. If he could have stayed sober he would have been a HOF player. His per 36 numbers are absolutely bonkers in the NBA. He's one of the guys I always recreate for NBA 2K games to put back on the Mavs.

Not surprising at all. I was born in 1973, in Seattle, Sonics and Blazers fan. In 1991 when I went to college, and you were only 5, Roy Tarpley was all but done, because addiction did him in. What's also interesting, is how many people who are 36-37 in 2024, like yourself, react to videos of players in my era like Tom Chambers, and marvel at how good he was. Someone born in 1986, likely sees Kobe, Shaq and LaBron as some of the biggest stars of your era growing up.

It's almost impossible to overstate how devastating the Tarpley thing was for the Mavs. That helped lead up to those unbelievably dreadful early 90s Mavs teams. A strong argument can be made the 93 Mavs were the worst team in NBA history, they had the worst net rating of all time and started the season 4-50

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. When the Sonics had the 11th pick in the draft in 1994, one rumor had the Sonics trading it for Roy Tarpley. That was when having big men were very important. I was in FAVOR of trading for Tarpley. Turns out, that was a great non-trade for the Sonics, as I believe he had some issues when he returned in 1994-95.

I want "Forgotten Player Profiles" and everybody here to know this about me: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. These show where, when, and HOW (Japanese-American and male) I grew up, why I see things the way I do, and what era I watched the NBA in. Whenever you see me request and suggest a name for a "forgotten NBA player," if they were before your time, consider MY birth year, to show where he comes from. How about Kevin Duckworth and Jerome Kersey? Eddie Johnson (Suns, Kings, Sonics)? Or another What If Richard Dumas?

Aguirre was asked by Tarpley's parents to take care of him, and for 2 years he did. THen in year 3 Tarpley thought he didn't need Aguirre's guidance and so went out on his own. Career went downhill after that.
