I have done all of my own oil changes to my cars in the past until I bought my Sentra. There is 18 bolts and plastic screws involved in taking off the plastic protective plate underneath just to get to the filter and oil pan. My first oil change was on a cold, wet, winter day and I said “no way, not today” and the next day took it to my mechanic to do. He even said how much of a pain it was just to get to the pan and filter. I’ll tackle it myself once the weather warms up. The days, with this vehicle anyway, of a 10-15 min oil change are over
Yes tell me about it I know .. even for us that work in shop that can lift car on a lift , it’s pain in the ass these days . It’s way harder to do it at home with jacks lol

Volvo XC40 is the same way. We have one and I REFUSED to pay 169 for an oil change. I'll take 45 minutes to take the over off 😅

Too late for me because I just bought myself a 2022 Sentra. Yes, it's a very painful process removing all the screws and clips from underneath this car but I find a short cut to do my own oil change. Here's what I did. You can cut out an access to the drain plug areas yourself. I did on my 2021 Sentra and make changing the oil much better. This way, all you do is loosen the 5 10mm bolts on the front ski plate along with some plastic clips, plus few more clip along the front side then pull down the cover, slide your oil pan between the cover and oil filter then loosen the oil filter, let oil drip to your oil pan. I hope this help. NOTE: I only cut about 4x4 inches of plastic under the drain plug areas

I normally changed my own oil in all my cars. New 2022 Sentra, let's see what's involved. Found your video. Yep, taking it to the dealership to do with the 5k service now. Wow tons of clips and bolts just to get to the filter and plug. I suppose all of that will protect the underneath and offer better gas mileage. Now I won't complain about paying for the oil change. Thank you, quality work!
quite frankly if it was me, I'd just cut two small access holes so I could do it without taking this stupid shit off every time haha

When you live in cold weather city/town and road salt and debris etc etc having all that plastic cover under the vehicle is (important).......
@@crow_2k11beatsbydre8 you believe this plastic piece prevents moisture from reaching the under belly? What it is helpful with is retaining moisture in there for longer than not having this shield.
Hey, but you can reverse engineer. Here's what I did to my 2021 Sentra under cover so it will make my life much easier changing the oil myself. I can cutout about 4x4 inches of the plastic directly under the drain plug areas so I can just gain access to the plug and drain the oil. Next, all you do is loosen the 5 10mm bolts on the front ski plate along with some plastic clips, plus few more clip along the front side then pull down the cover, slide your oil pan between the cover and oil filter then loosen the oil filter, let oil drip to your oil pan. Just changed the oil for my brothers 2021 Nissan Sentra. Nice vid! the hardest part was removing all the plastic screw in’s to remove the cover, there was at least like 30 I had to take off, after that everything went smooth

@@AutomotiveDysfunction When you take off each plastic push pin, put a small piece of duct tape next to the hole. After you have changed the oil you won't have to hunt for all of the places to replace the push pins.

I recently bought a 22 Versa after my 05 Cavalier finally died. I used to change the oil for that on my own and decided to find a video on how to do it for the Versa. It's too cold in the midwest right now to mess with all that crap now, so it looks like Im taking it to a shop for this when the weather drops.
Honestly, I wish I knew this before getting the vehicle. It wouldn't have put me off of buying it completely, but it would have been something to keep in mind.
2024 design is a bit different but still need to take out whole cover for oil filter 😂

They could have at least added a quick access hatch. I'm shocked that they went to all this trouble just to lock people out of changing their own oil. Might have to make some access hatches of my own

@@AutomotiveDysfunction Cool! When you drill out the holes, do you use anything to plug it back up or to function as a kind of hatch or is it safe enough to just leave it open? My last car didn't have a shield, but things like the exhaust system and heat Shields all rusted out very quickly on that car

Some engineer thought it was genius to use 25 pins and 2 bolts to hold up that protective shield. Just another way for them to have customers rely on the dealership for simple maintenance.

I find oil changes a fun weekend. Dont mind taking out 50,000 push pins/screws. Id rather do it then giving it to someone else to do it and mess up somehow or not clean up afterwards.

No tool to put back just use ur fingers guide top in fist and pushin back of it
I took it off once and cut a big opening where the filter and pan was at. Made it so much easier for changes in the future.

I did the same to my Sentra but I only cut 4x4 inches directly under the drain plug so I can loosen bolt and let oil drain out, then I just loosen the 5 10mm boils of the front ski plate along with clips and side clips, pull down the cover, slide my oil pan under the oil filter and change it. I didn't want to cut under the oil filter, so I did that process for my own oil change. Still better then removing the whole dame ski plate. Poor design.

I live in Los Angeles so I don't think I need to put that plastic cover back on. I think I will put it in storage.
It is up to you but that plastic cover helps water splashing into your motor and transmission. Water will cause rusts on metal. Also, that ski plate were suppose to help improve air flow to help save gas, so you might want to reconsider putting it back on.
All those clips missing. I wonder if that's what happens when you visit a quick change oil shop.

@@AutomotiveDysfunction If that is from the dealership, I might have to start doing it myself. I'm gonna likely have to get under it to change the oil myself anyway because the dealer can't have me in until next week and I'm at 7750 km out of my 8,000 on the maintenance computer and don't feel like voiding my warranty. I usually keep an extra bag of clips around in case I bust any working on my own vehicles. Kinda shocking that they wouldn't replace clips that cost me $19 for a 50 pack when they charge $90 for the service. That's usually why you see those shields sitting at the side of the highway, too many missing clips. If I find a bunch of mine missing, I don't think I'll be taking it back there

I would use any
Brand you can afford full synthetic preferred every 5k miles or if you are using conventional oil replace oil every 3k
Brand doesn't really matter. Nissan manual states it needs to meet ILSAC GF-6 and API SP specifications, which should be written on the bottle.
I was about to get this car until I saw the plastic cover, fuck that changing the oil filter is supposed to be fun and easy not dealing with a huge plastic cover 😂

I don’t see why not .. back then cars didn’t have this .. there are still cars without it.. the only things that does provides little protection and aerodynamic for little bit better mpg lol

It's just like a dealership any way out they can take they will, It's sad.
The only reason I can possibly think why leaving that shield off would void my Sentra warranty, as it may help keep some of the salt water from roads in the winter off of some of the components.
However there are multiple openings that still let some water in, and that stupid shield probably keeps the moisture trapped in there longer.
Maybe even possible accelerating corrosion due to a decrease in ventilation and increase in humidity not.
It would kill milage if you leave off. It help reduce drag and it protects under parts from getting caught or hit by random debis.
I would make holes on those plastic cladding in order to access the oil filter and drain plug if I own that car.

That's exactly what I did to mine. No hell, I'll be taking those screw and clips off....darn time consuming.
I'll remove 50 bolts and a hundred plastic clips because I know it will be done correctly . Not a shop mechanic with a air gun tightening the drain plug . Plus I will still save money to boot !
I have done 1 oil change already and need to do another one. I hate that friggin cover. Makes the job so much longer than it has to be. You spend 25-30 mins just on removing the cover.

If I had known about the problem of the oil change I would never have purchased a Nissan Sentra I still have not found a place to get the oil changed and it has 6800 miles on it. I have even thought of trading it off will never buy another Nissan.
