I never understood people's anger at Kirk's death. He died saving an entire people. And got to know "we made a difference."
That isn't a bad way to go.
Agreed! Plus now they can never ruin his character. Unlike JL in Star Trek Picard
I think the anger is he died on a bridge (har har) and that he didn't die alone, as he had predicted previously (STV or VI, don't remember right now).
@@strells Technically he was alone, his friends weren't with him. He just met Picard, he's nobody to Kirk.
I think people lament all those years we could have had Shatner on screen

Malcolm made a better Admial Tolwyn, but is my favorite bad guy actor
ILM's John Knoll is a LEGEND!!! Such a pioneering force in effects! Amongst his MANY achievements, Photoshop is one!
Seeing Picard cry for the first time almost broke me as a kid.
Well I was 14… still a kid.
But I had seen him my whole life as this stoic man that would keep a stone face.
Seeing him cry was like seeing your dad cry for the first time. (Something I still haven’t seen so I’ll have to settle for Picard. Oddly enough my dad looks like him. (At least his hair does))
I saw it in theaters. First contact. With my younger brothers. I was fighting back tears but my brothers started crying. Haha. That’s a core memory.
i've never seen my dad cry...the closest I've come to seeing that is when my aunt died, and when he called me to tell my my cousin died.
In Star Trek Online when they had the Foundry missions, I wrote a Foundry mission called the Journey Home where the players go and retrieve Kirk's remains and bring them back to Earth for a proper burial and have to deal with the Klingons and Romulans in the process.
I would have played that.
I would have certainly loved to play that
I miss the foundry 😭
Took me down memory lane. I remember reading the novelization and I did have that PC game as well! Great job as always gents
Ha, I have a genuine guilty love for "The Return". Haven't thought about it in years
I think this movie has aged very well. In fact, I think it's better received today than it was initially.
Huh?
I loved it!
I agree. I enjoy this movie more now that I'm older and even more since trek has become rubbish
@@gazs6571 I'll put it this way: new trek has made me appreciate "old" trek more.
@@GenuineMattyC me to. I watching DS9 again and loving it
The Return have actually few fine motives- Defiant renamed Enterprise E, multi dimenshional Borg base, and even V'ger connection.
I actually really likes the Borg v'ger connection
It wasn't the Defiant it was a Defiant class starship called the USS Monitor. Good book.
@@beyerdr Didn't it also have a special black stealthy paint job? It was a section 31 ship if memory serves
@@carlmiller757 I remember the ship being black being mentioned, but I thought it was just starfleet special forces. I dont remember Section 31 being specifically mentioned but it has been YEEEEARS since I read that book
@@beyerdr Same here. I think it was around 05 or maybe 06 when I read it. Safe to say I've slept since then. 😜
Generations was the only film scored by the guy who wrote DS9 music
My wife and I always referred to Alan Ruck's Capt. Harriman as Capt. Cameron. :D
"The Return" by William Shatner was a surprisingly well-written entertaining book. Although it doesn't fit in the cannon Star Trek universe, it dose mirror quite a few facts from "Star Trek: First Contact," though without the time-travel element. Plus, his Enterprise-E was a re-named Defiant-class ship.
Universes can't be cannons, silly!
It doesn't surprise me that Shatner would write a book to make his character die "better", or even not die at all.
The original rated G dialogue:
Data: Ohhhh shi...nzon!"
@0:48 I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that picks people's noses with my mouse pointer.
Neat. I didn't know the website fact. That's pretty cool.
Definitely a lacklustre story but the lighting and sets never looked better. That sun effect glaring inside Ten Forward is beautiful.
The Nexus Ribbon viewed from long range is the exact same thing I see during silent migraines, lol.
I read the Return, actually enjoyed it.
God, Starship Creator was awesome, i remember having on a ZIP-Disc
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER the ZIP-Format?!
Fun-idea: Saving the Enterprise-D in the alternate ending for the PC Game (Stardate: 48650.1) allows the VCR Game A Klingon Challenge (Stardate: 49253.5) to be canon (possibly) in that timeline (albiet they'd have to revert the bridge setting).
Oh God the PG rating.
I still remember 4 year old me bringing that movie to the babysitter's house, and then the panic on the babysitter's face as she tried to explain what "bad words" were.
A game where you can actually change the ending? what a novel concept!
'The Return' was a great read.
Shatner "wrote" that novel the same way Walter Keane painted the Big Eyes paintings.
Sean's the guy you want along on every road trip, bus stop, or boring overnight in the drunk tank.
Well, Picard just re-rewrote the book on El-Aurians
I loved Shatner's "fix it" novel, though I can't remember if I read Avenger
Was reawatching and I was today years old when I noticed an freaking Admiral just chilling on the bridge of the Enterpise B during the opening sequence. That makes 4 flag officers during a crisis and only Kirk and Scorry had an idea between them? No wonder we don't anything about the B
I would have loved to have been in the theatre when Data said Oh Shit! just for the reactions.
I was in one shortly after it was released, and the gasps were hilarious!!! :P
It was awesome. :)
I saw st:GEN in the movie theater.
I sniggered.
Was. I took my mom. We both laughed.
I remember being on the website as a teenager
It's hard to know for sure which came first, but Stargate also allegedly had the first movie website. IMDb trivia literally says they both came first!
I always wondered why Kirk and Picard never ran into sorons echo while in the nexus.
I didn't know about the G rating, so that was interesting.
It's funny that the non cannon explanation here for Guinan was still considered true until Picard season 2 (thankfully) confirmed otherwise.
Again...beautiful Irish in uniform!🥰😉
I think Generations is my next favorite to Undiscovered Country. 🖖
I have an Idea for a list for you guys. I don't know how to get in touch with you guys to see if you could do it. But here we go. How about "(insert number here) Star trek races that changed in appearance". Like obviously the Klingons, but also the ROmulans, the Trills,.etc...
Funny thing about the "G" rating. In the late 90s, the ratings board made a decision to prevent any live-action film from being allowed to get a "G" rating. This is why, while TMP got a "G" in all theatrical and video releases, the DVD Director's release and all future releases are rated "PG"
TMP got a G rating be it was so bad it was GAYYYY
Did they reverse that decision shortly after? There have been a few G rated live action movies since the 90s.
@@ChrisEllorris - Likely.
The novel was also released before the movie in the UK. So I spoiled it for myself, pre-CZcams! 🤣
Noice! Absolutely loved this!!
fun fact. in a ST TNG Novel with Q, they revealed that it was Q that created that ribbon in an offhand way. I remember him doing it and saying something akin to "I wonder whatever happened to that?" I think it may be a Peter David novel, but it's been so long i can't remember.
The novel is Q-Space (written by Greg Cox)
Wow...I remember that website.
I loved that game I still have the disks to this day lol.
The space combat sections were the same code and engine used in the "Star Trek : A Final Unity" Point and click adventure too :D the game at the time was the 'technological successor' to that title. Loved all those early Star Trek games!
So was Old Scotty going to be at the funeral too?
That would have highlighted the inconsistency between Generations and the NextGen ep, Relics.
Thanks. 🖖🏻
The Shatner novels were surprising good reads. I'd recommend them.
That's because he didn't write them. They only used his name.
I've never gotten around to seeing it. Maybe I should.
Wait. Stargate was the first film with an official website, though. I think we need to do a little more investigating!
Man I remember seeing this with my uncle
This was my first Trek movie in theaters when I was 11
@@gregoryliedtka7510 I just turned 12, but same. Even this movie could destroy the franchise for me.

I'm glad you included (#2) the sequel novels Shatner co-wrote bringing Kirk back from his disappointing death in the movie. While I never hated the film's depiction like some fans, I admit it was underwhelming considering how often he'd survived similar and/or much graver predicaments. I remember reading those novels when they came out and liking them fairly well, gaining a new respect for Shatner's storytelling (as long as he has co-writers to help, it would seem). I think Shatner's lack of success on ST:V overshadows many of the good things he did in the realm of writing and directing, especially with the non-Trek related "TekWar" series of books he outlined for Ron Goulart and the subsequent TV series (some of which he directed). I mean, they're not great literature or TV by any means - in fact they're rather mediocre sci-fi comparatively, but still enjoyable.
Other than the reuse of the Bird-of-Prey explosion, the VFX in this film were indeed very good and still hold up remarkably well. My only real complaint about this movie is the pacing/editing coupled with the lackluster score making it feel more like a feature-length TV episode than a theatrical film.
Uranus may have magnetic fields, but mine certainly doesn't!
Interesting...mine has mud fields...
@@merickful 😂
Need more iron in your diet.
I have those books actually, first editions, but not being a reader, I've never actually read them... :P
And the game, yeah, even saving the Enterprise is confusing, cos it means that First Contact should have been featuting the D then, but, alas, games are just that, and had no effect on what happened next... :(
I loved this movie, I don't care what anyone says or how it was rated. IIRC I saw it with my dad in theatres lol.
i have enjoyed y4r worj on ST everytime
I'm pretty sure the first movie with its own website was Stargate.
Does anyone think the cover for the Generations comic looks weird? In particular it looks like Picard should be holding a phaser, but its..it's... invisible? I mean what else could he be holding?
I can't get over how those federation space stations look like giant space mushrooms.
It was an easter egg referring to the mycelial network. And because the people who hate Star Trek lose their minds every time Discovery is even mentioned, I'll go ahead and say that I'm kidding, I know they didn't have it planned out that long, but wouldn't it be great if an earlier series referenced to the spore drive from the best Star Trek series ever, Discovery?
@@OhhCrapGuy You are funny.
Sorry to break this to you guys. I actually did know no2 on this list.
So just like the movie, it's time now for some last minute re-shoots.
Umm.."Stargate" is widely recognized as being the first movie with it's own website.
Say what you will about this movie, the visuals are (in my opinion) the absolute BEST in the entire film series
In mid-1994, a website actually had a movie trailer video in it ?!? How many people could even view it?
I would like to know too. Back in 1994 few computers could even run MPEG.
Nine.
Harriman gets redeemed in the books
What happened to the Nexus? Is it still flying around?
Yep.
I thought the Cinematography in Generations was excellent.

Magnetic fields around my what?! Õ_Õ
So Jean Luc Picard's nephew Renee from "TNG" must explain where he got his name in "Star Trek Picard". From female Renee Picard in 2024.
the nephew would have spelled it René
I thought Stargate had the first movie website, popped up Jan 94
This is what I thought as well. Many sites state this as well.
Why didnt fans know that Andromeda eas directed by Majel and was serialized or are we just too old to have noticed?
8 wasn't planed Brent forgot his line
I liked generations it was great
Have to wonder if the tear from Stellvia is copied from this?
Can anyone say why someone call a persons name out loud during Worf's promotion ceremony? Just before he jumps for the hat you can hear somebody call someone name in the background.
Has a 20 things you don’t know about first contact been done?
They seem to be going in order, so I would guess it's next.
Should be next' very excited for it
This is Movie 7, First Contact is #8. So it should be the next one.
no they're stopping after Generations: "The line must be drawn HERE!"

John Harriman was interested in politics at a very young age.
The OG 1986 Transformers The Movie used the same "Oh S*^@!" to get a PG rating.
WHAT !!! I COULD NEVER BEAT THAT GAME !!!! :/
i wondered how 2 people die in a fire at a vineyard in the 24th century
I didnt like the nexus idea at all for how Kirk and Picard could meet. With all the time travel possibilities this is the best they could come up with?
I remember the "powers that be,"specifically saying they did NOT want to rely on time travel for Kirk and Picard to meet. I remember thinking that was amusing considering the very next film was based around time travel.
@@paulfaulkner5786 maybe thats why they didnt want to use time travel
I had no idea the Nexus was based around the, heretofore unknown, magnetic fields around my anus, but I'm very flattered! Thank you TrekCulture!
Kirk had an out take during his death scene where he looked into Picard's eyes and said "the bridge is on the captain"
1994?!?!? ohman.
EARTHS ALL COME HERE
Remember the time Picards family died horrifically in a fire? Star Trek Picard doesn’t
Um acthully stargatevwas thebfirst movie to hsve a promotional website
We're not going to talk about the extensive torture scene that was removed?
It was a huge character scene for Geordi to show his loyalty to his friends.
And ruins the "his heart just wasn't in it" line afterward.
PG if it was released now it would be hard R . Every thing now has to be so violent just look at American Horror Story: Picard
Picard's brother's absence in his flashbacks in Picard, along with the fact that his mother hung herself whilst young, ignores the scene where he recognises her as an elderly woman in the Enterprise corridor, during, 'Where No One Has Gone Before', in season 1, are just two of many reasons why Picard cannot be considered canon.
Go back and look at the dialogue in that TNG episode and it's clear that he never got to see his mother grow old. Also, all of the flashbacks in Picard take place on a single day, and in the first episode of the season they mention his brother is away at school. Season 2 of Picard was not that great but neither of those things are actually issues.
@@ChrisEllorris I watched the episode just before this season of Picard started, it is very, very clear that he recognised the elderly lady sitting at the table as his mother. Then Riker comes along, he turns, and when he looks back she's gone. His mother reached old age in TNG's timeline. His dad was also seen as an old man in Tapestry, where Q allows Picard to see him in the, "afterlife".
@@spunktasticjismmonkey8569 He recognizes her there because it's a common dream/fantasy he has. Something he's never gotten to do.
@@ChrisEllorris I think that's a stretch. The implication is that he saw her reach that age, so knew it was her straight away. The writers of Picard either didn't do their research, or didn't care about the continuity, because it would have ruined the story they want to tell. Either way, it's pretty unimpressive when they screw up like this and expect us not to notice. We're probably the most anal fans in the world, along with Star Wars fans.
@@spunktasticjismmonkey8569 It's very possible the writers of that TNG episode thought the same as you, and that Picard is retconning it, sure. But to be honest, it makes that TNG scene a lot more powerful knowing that she died when he was a kid, and it doesn't negatively impact or overtly change anything in the process. The creators on Picard are keenly aware of so many tiny details about what came before, so I'm sure they knew full well about that scene from TNG.
It's very common for Trek to retcon older Trek, whether it changes things completely (the Hansons knowing about and chasing the Borg like 20 years before the Enterprise met them) or just fills in gaps and changes what we thought was true (Spock having a sister). Again, Picard Season 2 wasn't great. There was too much going on and the story got convoluted halfway through. Major issues like they shouldn't have had Soong and his daughter, and minor ones like saying 10 Forward was named after a street and not because it was on the forward section of Deck 10.
Obviously it's just my opinion here, but Picard's mom dying was not one of the issues from the second season
Why does everyone keep saying my anus has a magnetic field! Steven Hawking, NASA, Neil Degrasse Tyson and now ILM's VFX supervisor?!
It's getting more than a little hurtful guys! I am what I am! Stop picking on me!
In my "personal opinion" S.T.N.G. was (and will always be) the BEST S.T. Series!
And then Picard went and turned Guinan into a space-witch.

Everyone knows Stargate had the first website. Just let it go.
Source? And it's nice, that you mention a thing everybody knows. Why are you mentioning it?
@@MAKgargos both films claim to be the first movie to have been promoted by a website. Now both movies were released in late 1994 so it's been tricky figuring out who really got there first. A big problem is that finding the actual date MGM registered "Stargate" as a domain name is not easy. However here's something to think about, Paramount officially set up the site to promote Generations on Oct. 28 1994. That happens to be the date STARGATE was released in theaters. So the website for SG would have had to have been launched online prior to that date in order to promote the film.
@@albion65 Logic is no source. I found some persons in old forums and reddit talking about a date for Stargate in 1986. There was no internet, but a side? So I looked for myself and find no answer.
I asked for a source.
I thought #3 was common knowledge, except to the Star Trek: Picard screenwriters who only just screwed that up.
The kerning between the R and A in GENERATIONS. Goodness me. Before you say it, I know, I should get a life.
I've recently written a font rendering engine. You don't need a life - we need to form a society
why would anyone even want to save Kirk ?
You're funny (assuming you were trying to be). 🤗
@@alm2187 Nope, Shatner was a horrible horrible horrible actor and the character Kirk was just as bad. Picard is what a captain should be and would be if it was real.
I truly hate this movie. A big scene sci-fi rendition of the Menedez brothers in space. At least there was some solace with the firing of Rick Berman from the fancies three movies later.
Do you have a boyfriend?
I love a trek nerd.
Another way in which Patrick Stewart kinda sabotages Star Trek. It's preestablished that medical science hasn't cured mortality, so one Picard having a heart attack is closer to the mark as far as consistency. But Earth is supposed to be a high-tech utopia, and a vineyard can still be a firetrap?! Also, our hardened hero coming apart at the seams over this is a little... (rotates hand with palm-down)
I think its clear Patrick doesn't know shit when it comes to Star Trek
Another reason why no one should ever listen to Patrick Stewart for story beats or anything else for that matter
