My favorite part of any scene in Insurrection is definitely when Picard starts singing and indicates to Worf that he should join along, and Worf just shakes his head with a rather panicked look on his face. I crack up every time I see that. Michael Dorn played that scene wonderfully.
I love that scene too.

Worf’s “gorch” is another high point.
As a hip, young person, I _absolutely_ vibe with bleeding from my forehead whenever I throw a temper tantrum. Totally based.

I liked the movie.
I worked for United Artists Theaters back then. And when we unboxed the Standee for the move, we immediately knew it Paramount wasn’t pushing this movie as hard as the last two.
The Generations and First Contact Standees were massive, they lit up, and took about 3 hours to build. The Insurrection standee was just a bland cardboard version of the movie poster, and it took about 10 minutes to assemble
Plus. I’m pretty sure I remember Johnathan Frakes saying the SFX were not complete. I’m thinking it may have been the interior of the Collector. That was a lot of blue.
I liked the lighter tone and the humor. When you live with a group of people for years in a Military setting you tend to let your hair down as you become more comfortable with one another. Then the ribbing and poking fun at one another starts. This makes sense for the crew as they have been together for 8 years now.
Was a Baku in this. The guy with the long coat on. 2 months of work and u see me 5 or 6 times. Was a lot of fun shooting. They took a bunch of up to the Sierra Nevadas for a week for all that mountain stuff. That was a blast. Everyone in the cast was kool.
Great memories, as for the movie...
Big trekkie here and, well, yikes. Felt this thing bombed in so many areas. Skimmed the comments a bit and peeps here seem to be giving it a thumbs up. Don't really know what that's about. Fun thing, the following summer I was a Thermian in Galaxy Quest, perhaps the best Star Trek movie of them all
I like the movie but the pacing is a bit off.
First Contact is a movie you watch for an evening's entertainment, Insurrection is a movie for a Sunday afternoon on your own when nothing is on TV.
I just wish they kept some of the scenes in that were very TNG-esque, such as Picard's "working lunch" and the full version of Troi & Riker acting up in the library (and a side-note to that, Max Grodénchik, who played Rom in DS9, featured in that scene too so really should be added in!!), as for the original ending, that could have worked, but I guess people just wanted big boomy explosions rather than ironic deaths... :\
I agree for most of this, the only thing I only half agree on is the ending. It could have easily been adapted to involve both. Have the de-aging happen and Picard standing there unable to help, while perhaps the bio-neural circuitry or whatever Voyager had, also de-aging causing instability in that part of the ship and then catastrophic malfunction; fireball as Picard escapes. Guess you could say, the Best of Both Worlds
I loved this movie. Along with Generations, it examined profound questions about the nature of mortality and what you would sacrifice for happiness. I also really liked the Picard romantic angle. I wish they'd gone with the alternate ending - it would have been far more poetic, and would have emphased Picard's near boundless capacity for mercy.
This is my lease favourite Star Trek film.
Personaly i like the idea of the original ending with the de-aging process. If well done, it would add something special to the movie & character, cause Ruafo would finnaly get what he wants but with a twist. And for action, they stil could have blown up the ship.. so basically a mix out of those 2 endings.
I read that Ru’afo somehow got into an escape pod as the collector was being destroyed, but it dropped him into the rings, and that direct exposure to the metaphasic radiation de-aged him rapidly into nothing.
Oh man, they definitely should have kept that ending!
A great ending, that could have been tied in with the other. We know starfleet as of Voyager from memory have biological components in their systems. Wouldn't be a stretch for any other species to use similar and that could be a solid potential to mix both the de-aging ending with the ship meeting its end violently. A bittersweet at best or phyrric victory for the villain while still giving some great character moments for all involved and the ultimate victory of the Enterprise. Actually, would make a fairly decent mirror in a way to Return of the Jedi with Luke and Anakin in a way, one character trying to save the other, the other realising their final goal and then perishing in glorious sci-fi explosions
Love this movie. And I love the score, so beautiful!
One thing I didn't know about Star Trek: Insurrection was that it was intended to be a serious film. What I mostly rememver of it was some bad green screen effects with Data's head floating in air and a really lame joke made by Data when they fell into the lake.

Goldsmith knocked it out of the park with the musical score for this film. It is fantastic! My favorite of the TNG films soundtracks.
this is my favorite tng film and one of my favorites in the franchise....it deserves more love....
Insurrection felt more like an extended episode of TNG than a movie to me. I am not sure if that is good or bad. I think I would have liked the de-aging ending a little better, in essence he got what he wanted, but it killed him. I think it would have been something to make the ending stand out from other action sequences.
Honestly, I think this is why it is one of my favorite of the films.
Not only did it feel like an extended episode, but it wasn't even a good extended episode. The central moral quandary just doesn't work, since we know that the Ba'ku had migrated to the planet themselves (and since they were still a first-generation group of colonists due to their lack of aging).
The original Heart of Darkness inspired plot sounds a thousand times better than what they ended with. Shame we missed out on that.
The practical model of the Soverign Enterprise was beautiful.
The specular lighting on the 3D model... not so much.
6:58 No mention of how that blue background should have replaced with outer space? It seems someone chose the wrong cut of the movie to put on DVD.
Even back then, I thought the movie industry was moving too fast in regards to 'computer generated' imagery. I was watching the blu ray of Air Force One and remember how I felt the effects didn't work that well when I saw it in the theater all those years ago. I saw Event Horizon the other night (which I also went to go see back when it first opened) and thought all the physical sets and models looked fantastic. I feel similarly about Star Trek: Insurrection... which I also went to see. :)
So, if Geordi's eyes regenerated, why didn't Picard's heart?
Georgi's eyes are still there even if non functional. Picard's heart was REMOVED and replaced by an artificial organ. You can't regenerate what's not there anymore.

I know some people hated this movie. I didn't hate it at all. It's just that it felt more like a two-part episode of TNG, albeit an extremely well produced one (movie quality). The humour was great of course. I guess the recurring theme that is growing tired now is the number of corrupt (morally or otherwise) admirals within Starfleet. Seems to be a significant number...
Utopia is constantly under internal threat, whether that's the B'aku village being threatened by their wayward children, or the Federation being threatened by ambitious or paranoid admirals.
Nemesis arguably the best of the 4. In response to "I wonder how that one went"

I don’t know if it’s mentioned in this list yet, because I’m still watching it. But I wonder if there’s any mention of Arnold Schwarzenegger filming scenes as an Admiral in this movie. Cos rumour is he did, but it was cut. And I also remember during the time of production rumour had it that during the original premise where Picard was hunting down his piratical friend, original casting possibilities FOR that friend was, among others, Alan Rickman or Richard E Grant.
Both Sean and Picard have made the same mistake saying that Gilbert & Sullivan were composers (and Picard should have really known better) - only Sullivan was a composer, Gilbert was his lyricist and also a highly successful playright. As a fan of G&S, I had to set the record straight :)
Why did they kill that ending??? It's brilliant.
I recall an old Starlog interview where Frakes said they basically didn't use ILM for this movie because they couldn't afford it this time.

I've always thought that Insurrection came off like a decent (but definitely NOT great) mid-season two-parter from the TNG television series. The real head-scratcher is how this movie cost more than an entire season of TNG but only looked SLIGHTLY better than any single episode of the show. Where did that money go? You definitely can't tell by what you see on-screen.

I think Pillar should release the original script that Stewart trashed because whatever the state of it if it was worse than what we got it should be a bloody good laugh.
On the collector, I always assumed the blue panels were incomplete blue screen effects. Can't remember where I heard this, is it true? Because the set looks just as unfinished if the blue was intended

2:40 a younger demographic??????? How was that calculated? Why would kids like them? What?
Not a huge fan of this movie as it also felt to me like an extended episode of TNG. But that scene where Geordi can see without his eyes is not just one of the best scenes in the film, but one of the best in Trek as a whole.
Now that I know about the other ending with Ruafo de-aging, I wish they'd combined the two and shown him de-aging but also getting blown to bits. But doing that probably wouldn't have gone over with test audiences either as that ending wouldn't have been as clear cut as he, as the villain, would have gotten what he wanted, albeit for just a few seconds.

I can name at LEAST a dozen scenes in The Wrath of Khan ALONE that far surpass anything in Insurrection.
Maybe one day we'll get full Directors Editions.

I dont know about the jab at Nemesis at the end. I rather liked Nemesis. Okay, it was weak, but it wasn't THAT bad.
Then again, I loved Threshold, so.... 🤷♂️
That whole Sona thing has such HELLO FELLOW KIDS energy it’s absurd, especially with casting F Murray Abraham. Great actor but probably not a household name at all in the 90s. If you want to bring the kids get a pop star or something not Salieri
Perfect opportunity to crossover with DS9 considering the galaxy was in the middle of the Dominion War.
I have read many opinions about that this movie should have been about a mission (a very special mission) of the Enterprise in the events of the Dominion War, instead of what we finally got.
The dress uniforms? Much better than what came before. Anything is better than the trench coats of the first season.
I wonder how they would have handled the Geordi is no longer blind plot line in TNG. Would he have difficulty adjusting as he is limited to "normal" sight?
this is one of my favorite star trek movies. but I always seem to like the odd duck.
If the choice is between Generations, this and Nemesis, I go with this one every time.

I was always confused why people used the fact it's a feature-length, big-budget TNG episode against the movie. That was my favorite part! And, while they used elements from previous episodes, it still felt like a new and bigger story.
The problem was that they looked at every installment as needing to carry the whole franchise, heaping a bigger and bigger burden on each movie and series. This ultimately lead to Nemesis and Enterprise being completely reactive ("oh crap, this isn't working, try this... no? try this... no? ...").
You should make a video in-depth with that thought, I haven't heard that before and it's interesting
The alternative ending not to be made me sad.
Marketing departments get a bad rapp when good movies don't find their audiences on opening weekend. And it's a well deserved rapp. When a movie as advertised can't bring in viewers, what are the ramifications with those advertisers? You only hear about potential sequels getting the ax and directors and artists getting egg on their face. What happens to the studio's chosen marketing executive who wastes money on happy meal toy tie-ins and boring 15 second tv blip ads?
So basically a lot of abandoned plot points for this film was used for Star Trek Nemesis.
You wonder how which one went? They never made Nemesis.

Deaging idea was better. As for the cgi, the only real problem I have with it is everything looks too smooth and pristine. There’s no sense of realism with textures of the metals and no hint of weathering even as they are flying in and out of a gas cloud the ship is spotless. Lol but, at least they still had a semblance of a shield bubble. That’s the only thing I hated about nemesis effects. The shields were visually nearly nonexistent. I want the bubble. Lol
Is there some rule, that the duller the movie, the more interesting it's production?
And not a single quantum torpedo was fired by the flagship. Why do they actually have them? Instead, once again, they do have the time to attempt a cool and risky maneuver because hey, big picture!
Why don't they rescue Ruafo and put him to some court? Letting him burn is very untrek like.
But as one of the few positive things I can mention is that one Son'a was not just bad, he could be convinced.
The enterprise eat looks like a dog shit compared to the beautifully flowing lines of the galaxy class and the price D
How, exactly, did the Bak'u enforce the exile of the Son'a? One side has *spaceships* and *rayguns*, the other side has a smug superiority complex. WHO WOULD WIN?!
The friend from the academy sounded like a much better tonal pitch than the Admiral Doherty rogue we got ...nothing to do with the actor....just the set up. I think renegade Starfleet Vs Picard would have been greater as the Sona were underwhelming

I will argue in favour of this movie. It's hardly the best Trek movie, it doesn't hold a candle to any of the great great ones like First Contact or Undisovered Country, but it's far better than the really awful ones like 5 and 10. It's a middle quality Trek movie that gets unfairly maligned as one of the worst for some reason.

Not my favorite Trek movie, but still a good outting. Picard was great, as was Data. The hocus pocus did not feel Trek, I feel it could have been done better. But still a good movie.
I liked the movie but I hated the use of the word "yacht". I would have used skiff, caravel, or even wave piercer.
I can appreciate a film and perhaps how it ends up. You just show the controversy hoping to become the next paparazzi? Is this how society grows? All of this happened 20 years ago, ffs.
Am I the only one that realized that Star Trek insurrection is a remake of a Star Trek TOS series episode and they’ve already covered this material you can’t invade a culture for your own purposes. I strongly suggest yours look at the Omega glory. You can’t as a Star Trek as a federation show do a movie or show about screen over a primitive local culture for a purpose.This is absolutely ridiculous and this is the same problem that happens with Star Trek discovery season four I am with Star Trek Picard season three where they completely ignore earlier Star Trek lore in order to make their films serious work

I don't know why this movie is hated. I mean, it's not a masterpiece, but it's decent, with a good story.
I can't put my finger on why I don't like the movie, but the good points: the romance, data and the boy, solving the mystery of the holoship don't add up to anything worth my time. The opening scene with Data was intriguing and grabbed my attention but nothing was worth it after that: picard and worf singing to distract him was lame, the magnificent seven routine to save the village was ridiculous and the holoship itself seemed redundant of that tng episode where words human brother used the holodeck to move a group of people. Plus the Sona just sucked, that felt like NO EFFORT to create an interesting new species at all.
I hate it because I can't root for the Ba'ku. Yes, it's wrong to abduct them by force, but what actual right do they have to live there, especially in light of how beneficial the "fountain of youth" qualities could be for the galaxy? They're not some ancient race that has lived on the planet for generations. They're a group of squatters.
Wait part 2 of 20 things you didn't know has 20 more things you didn't know sense you already did 20 in part one. So the series should have been called 40 things you did not know part one and two or this one could have been named 20 more things you did not know.
I love Patrick Stewart, but between this and "Picard", I think that he has an almost George Lucas vision of his character, where his ideas for Jean-Luc Picard are very different than the fan's perception.

As a disabled person (wheelchair user, born disabled) that scene with Geordi regaining his eyesight always felt a little bit off to me. Considering he was blind from birth and wouldn't have known anything different, then being able to see like others do may not have made much difference to him and not been as emotional as depicted in the film. Once you're born that way (in my experience anyway), you generally don't tend to think too much about what if you weren't disabled.
...Except for the fact that TNG made it VER Y clear that Geordi very much thought about what it would be like to have normal vision, having him talk about it in several episodes.
By this point it was well established as something on his mind, even going so far as having Ryker-Q gift him with new normal eyes in one episode, showing Geordi clearly loving the new experience before turning the continued gift down solely because of 'who he would have to thank for it'.
As a TV character it makes sense they have to make certain character choices which make the characters more relatable to their target audience. Very rarely do producers/writers make this sort of decision with actual disabled people in mind as the target demographic. Not to mention the character is less likely to feel genuine to disabled people if no disabled person has any hand in the writing or execution of that character; it lacks a certain point of view in the details.

The cheapest, worst plotted, and most boring entry in the franchise.

Star Trek”Instant Erection” plays like a second season episode of TNG. Frakes has some good directing moments, but the Baku all look like Apple Store employees and contractually mandated singing scenes show the perils of when the main cast get to renegotiate their contracts. Frankly it’s a pants film that killed off all the momentum from First Contact. It’s also rehashing elements from two much better actual episodes.
Picard is not morally right though is he? One of the biggest scenes in Star Trek is “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one” by Spock and Kirk. These Baku are not native to this planet. The rings can give billions of people incredible healing they desperately need as this is the middle of the dominion war. They can regenerate eyes that were blind from birth but these people are selfishly refusing to share it so they can what? Geordi can’t have his eyes healed or the other billions because these 600 people won’t live forever? The sonar actually tried to remove them peacefully which Picard was fine with when it was a bunch of native Americans but suddenly this is wrong? This goes against the fundamentals of Star Trek. It really annoys me you can defend this. Plus apart from this major issue it’s just boring
The Sona couldn't get Federation assistance with the operation unless they did the hologram ship thing.
Vulcan logic is not always "just". The Baku also have rights, and should have been given the opportunity to be part of a solution that would benefit all parties.

I like all the TNG films. My only issue that I had was the supporting characters were not used efficiently and often overlooked. Let's hope Stewart gets it right in the Season 3 of Picard.

I just want to say that it's videos like this, focused treatments of even obscure or unpopular parts of the Star Trek canon, along with Ups and Downs, that keep me subscribed to TrekCulture, which I initially dismissed as just another brain-dead listical channel.
For me it was forgettable.
A bid for appealing to younger audiences resulted in F. Murray Abraham wearing funky-lookin' rubber and a hood? Who was the weak link in THAT chain of communication?
The female subordinates appeal, though they're kinda covered up. 🤗
Neelix is still a better character than Dobby the damn house Elf. I hate that freaking elf.

I can honestly say that there’s nothing I enjoyed about this outing!
Yeah, I know that First Contact with its darkness and body horror was a tough act to follow but it seems they didn’t even want to try! The CGI is nowhere NEAR as good as practical model shots here, try as you might to forgive it but it’s just not right. The plot is flat, at least for a big screen outing, the dress uniforms look ridiculous and the humour is childish. Not to mention the villains! They’re pushy and insistent without being menacing which kinda defeats the point. And oh my lord, how many more evil admirals are in the fleet? Jeez! Okay, so Dougherty here isn’t evil per se, more misguided and naive but come on… surely it must be a question on the admirals exam! Do you want this job to:
A) Do some good stuff.
B) Thwart the Klingon peace talks.
C) Secretly develop a phased cloak.
D) Take down bigger men than Picard.

The more I see of Star Trek, in its various iterations, the more I appreciate Star Wars. It isn't without it's own mega on of problems but bloody hell, it does try harder.

In Star Trek 3, we see the main characters risk their futures to bring their dead friend back to life. In this movie, we see the main characters risk their futures to…prevent the forced relocation of a bunch of strangers? That alone was hard to buy. But then they wanted us to believe the rest of the crew went along with this. Add in the cringe-inducing humor (pimple jokes?), weak villain, Data’s pointless friendship with a child, and fountain of youth premise, which has been done a million times before, and you get easily one of the worst Star Trek movies. This was instantly forgettable. This is when it became obvious the writers were out of ideas. A fight between the Enterprise and another ship inside of some space cloud? Wow. You’re recycling ideas from a movie made nearly 20 years earlier. And don’t get me started on the joystick. Sfdebris said it best. If Data sings, the movie will be bad. He sang in Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis.
Also the Baku were smug arseholes who all looked like middle managers on a weekend retreat. I was rooting for them to be killed.
And it's the forced relocation of a bunch of hippies in earth tones who have no actual ancestral claim to the planet. Like, who cares?
All I've learnt is that my love for Jean-Luc and Patrick himself was crushed with the Star Trek Picard. How the heck an actor could come in and dictate the terms to destroy the character that earnt him the right to have that opportunity is beyond me. Thank the universe for Strange New Worlds, because the train wreck called discovery (whilst a great sci fi show) was a trek embarrassment, the Picard series (again whilst a good sci fi show) was a horrible example of star trek that seemed to base its whole story on destroying the character of Jean-Luc that made him famous. For me, Pat should have just stuck with playing the character he was paid to do, cause being the producer and having a say in trek story lines and tradition doesn't seem to be his strong point. Again, thank the universe for strange new worlds. I was about to hang my coat up on my life long obsession with star trek until this show came out.
