Let's Play: Sharp Practice

  • Richard from Two Fat Lardies gives Justin an introductory game of Sharp Practice.
    This ball-and-musket skirmish game encourages a more "heroic" style than other traditional historic games. Battles play out like a cinematic period drama.
    In this Let's Play the guys go into detail on how a game will play out and the various cards and rules that will come into effect during each turn, giving you a good reference for learning to play your own games.
    Do you plan on playing your own dramatic set-pieces?

    Richard is the current godfather of our hobby - always entertaining. We've got to get Clark to star in some kind of reality TV show.
    Also, this demo shows one of the satisfying thing about these rules, that is the way few kills but more shock will cause units to disintegrate in a realistic manner compared to some rules where the kills happen to quickly. Solid rules once you get into them.

    This is probably the best Let's Play / Demo on Beasts of War ever.
    The rules set looks really nice and seem to really capture the feeling of line infantry fire being really ineffective and the morale and competence of your officers being the real deciding factor in who wins and loses, rather than casualties and effective fire.

    I think its even worse for Richard because at 1:35 he forgot to roll on the 'Bad Things Happen' table for a unit breaking (the one that ran across the front of the French line). Great game thought. Chain of Command next please.

    Well. This was brilliant. I just finished reading Sharpes Triumph. This game captured the back and forth point of view of the line battle wonderfully. I've been watching battle reports from other skirmish games and find myself frustrated with how most games are won or lost based on who bought the toughest characters and can you roll a six to wound before this tank character wipes the floor with you. This game captures the idea that your character needs his unit to be effective, so while a general might be tough, he is only as strong as the units he supports.
    The sharpe tv series always showed the French advancing in a column, making them harder to kill since they present less of a target to a facing line. Could this tactic work here? Are there cavalry units and how do they effect play? What minis do you recommend using with this game.
    I'm overseas currently in the US but I would totally buy this!

    Great play-through for my favourite ruleset. I've watched this four times and just picked up an issue at 1:08:30 where Richard uses his two Command Cards to increase his officer's status to four. He removes four shock markers from his formation, using up the officer's four orders, but then the officer orders the formation to fire. Was that last order allowed? Keep up the awesome SP2 vids!

    You almost lost me right at the beginning with the talk about the game being a hollywood/series style affair. But watching the BR, I really liked how it's difficult to get kills and how it's all about morale, command, positioning and manouvering. It seems to represent historical tactics rather well and I'm seriously considering getting the rules to play some napoleonic skirmishing while I build up my force for Black Powder. And as an interesting game option in itself. Cheers!

    • @agp11001
      @agp11001 Před 6 lety

      My own experience shows it's more about years in the hobby than actual age. After a while, all the SciFi/Fantasy/Steampunk thing loses a lot of its charm and you tend to look into other rulesets that either give a more realistic feel (say Force On Force), are grounded in history to a certain degree (like Sharp Practice or Chain of Command) or just tripping-balls insanity (like A Fistful Of Kung Fu).

    • @sirrathersplendid4825
      @sirrathersplendid4825 Před 6 lety

      Nah, not really years in hobby, it's all about whether you actually like and have any sense of history.
      I've always loved both SciFi AND history, but there's absolutely no competition: SciFi is invented - it's only as deep as the author(s) who wrote it; history was real life. It's as deep as history, essentially infinite. The more you know, it just gets better. For me gaming gives me insight into actual events, real people, the fate of real nations; scifi can be fun, but it's just made up.

    Very nice little mechanics. Always like breaking up you go I go moves and long periods of waiting. I like idea of shock but too many playing tokens can be annoying visually and moving around with units. When I see a lot of smoke on board kinda feel it should affect visibility/accuracy than just keeping track of reloading/shooting.

    • @Pengi_SMILES
      @Pengi_SMILES Před 6 lety +1

      Michael Abbey I agree about the tokens. An unobtrusive dice to mark shock is more usual. Tokens work for the video though.

    • @shurelyshnot
      @shurelyshnot Před 6 lety

      I use the Warbases 'dials' with a period appropriate casualty on top.. or a farm animal.. they go up to 12, which is usually enough for a single group.

    • @sirrathersplendid4825
      @sirrathersplendid4825 Před 6 lety

      You can use pebbles. Personally, I really, really hate mini dice and dial counters. The game has enough dice and numbers in it already. Some kind of token is a great visual queue without resorting to numerical representation. Also adding/removing tokens is so much simpler than fiddling with dice and dials. A quick glance at a heap of tokens tells you instantly a unit is in trouble without your eyes needing to read and brain needing to process the number on the dice.
      Agreed that musketry smoke should accumulate and reduce visibility. To an extent it's abstracted into the First Fire mechanism.

    Here's forty shillings on the drum
    For those who'll volunteer to come
    To 'list and fight the foe today.
    Over the hills and far away.
    O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
    King George commands and we obey.
    Over the hills and far away.
    When duty calls me I must go
    To stand and face another foe.
    But part of me will always stray
    Over the hills and far away.
    O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
    King George commands and we obey.
    Over the hills and far away.
    If I should fall to rise no more,
    As many comrades did before,
    Then ask the fifes and drums to play.
    Over the hills and far away.
    Then fall in lads behind the drum,
    With colours blazing like the sun.
    Along the road to come-what may.
    Over the hills and far away.

    the shock focus is pretty great, makes the units more durable, but unreliable, revaluing the slow rate of fire weapons, and leading up to those big gunline moments even if one side gets the drop
    those two lads can really pair their themes with their mechanics, and no one is a better creator-demonstrator than Richard
    many games of this nature devolve into hex affairs due to the combat mechanics not being as bespoke, forcing the roudabout hex format to recreate those pickets charge moments or those storming the sanctum moments
    i have never seen it pulled off in an honest to goodness radial movement wargame
