Thank you for posting this video, it answered my "do I lift my car?" question. My Subi is mostly a commuter, 5mpg drop = no thank you.
Love the set up. I had a 15 outback lifted with BFGoodrich as well. Super heavy tires. I noticed a drop in performance and mpg. I changed to Atturo Trail Blade XT and made a world of a difference.
That drop in mpg isn't too bad. Especially considering how bad ass your ride looks now... and the functionality, of course. Well done
I came to the same conclusion. I'll take it considering the pros to the setup overall. Thanks!
Nice looking rig, an thanks for the info on MPGs. Been thinking of building a Forester and this is exactly what I wanted to hear.
Great!
Hi Lance. I'm also Lance from Cal. ;-) I own a 2016 Forester Limited 2.5 CVT. I purchased mine new in 2015. I've got 71k miles on it now. I do a lot of month long road trips but haven't made it out to IA yet. Been to all the western states. I haven't done anything to my Forester except change over to Discovery AT/3 all terrain tires. Still 17". But I like your tire setup. Will consider changing to 15" wheels and getting the same BFG KO tires you've got. Just discovered your channel today and am now your latest subscriber. Thanks for putting out content on your Forester. I hope your replaced CVT works out well for you for the long term! Cheers!
Such a nice set up I will probably mimic some of these set up.
Dude weird that I found your secondary, love your gun vids.
Thanks for the video really help on my decision!!!!
Right on brother nice ride
I know you're happy with the Tacoma since you're not on CZcams as much but man... You had such a cult following when you had your Forester. Your old Forester is what I'm striving for as my daily/family car/weekender vehicle.
Yeah, the Forester offroad stuff is not seen nearly as much. Everyone and their mom has a Tacoma, but that's okay too.
cool. many guys raise more questions when you ask the the simple question
With the 245/65/17 KO2's I could flirt with 28 mpg on the highway.
With the 245/65/17 AT3's I can see 31+ on the highway both according to the display.
Calculated at the pump to factor for the +2 sized tires it still works out to around 28.5 actual MPG.
The 3.6 seems to have a lower starting point but is less affected by mods. I even got high teens in mpg while towing 4000 pounds through the mountains.
The flip side is what I just went over in my last video: If I ONLY drive my 2 mile city commute to work the MPG is atrocious.
Great Vid! What size Yakima crossbars do you have on your Forester?
considering I'm getting 13mpg in my SUV A lifted suby is still looking good.
2010 Xterra off-road here... best I get is about 17 mpg (mostly highway at that). Love it... but could do better at the pump.
IIndeed. Lifting the vehicle increases the frontal area which will increase drag and decrease efficiency.
Hi, nice lift set and tires look crazy. Can you say how many miles or kilometers you drive on one tank of fuel in different modes, cities, highways, or mixed?
I wonder how much not always having the hitch with the spare and has an would help the mpg
I have the Subaru Outback. Can you please tell me why is my MPG jumping around while I'm driving? I usually get 18.5 with A/C. Now it just jumps from 16 to 99 MPG. Everything else is perfect. You help is appreciated.
JB.
Skybox kills the mileage too true.
I was trying to sell my 03 forester and get a Land Cruiser. But I realized the forester probably will do better gas mileage. I don’t think I’ll be going on hard trail anyways. Thanks
Have you done any engine mods like lighter pulleys or cold air intake?
Did you account for the difference in tire diameter when calculating your MPG?
What’s the red ring on the front end?
Trip meter/odometer? Is this calibrated from stock to the current tires? Have you checked with GPS for accuracy?
I think you did very sensible mods for your needs. I am seriously looking at the BFG KO2's for my Ridgeline when tire change time comes. My other choice is NITTO Terra Grappler. My Ridgeline could use a little lift too. Also note, tire tread pattern makes a difference on MPG. Hiway vs More Aggressive tread design. Thanks
It's calculated from the stock tire diameter and updating the odometer is too much of a pain the ass (or impossible) to deal with so I have to calculate the true mileage by adding a certain percentage before I do the MPG math. Nah, haven't bothered with GPS yet. Yeah, the KO2s and most all-terrains are not the best when it comes to roll resistance either which doesn't help.
@@HighjakSecondary But, it is purpose built for what your needs are for hobby and outings. Same as if you had a 4wd JEEP or Toyota Tacoma. Can't visit the out of doors on street tires. I allways had an all season tire on the more aggressive side on all my pickups. I was hunting and needed them.
@@HighjakSecondary On one of your trips, get the GPS app for your phone and check it against the odometer/speedometer. That is what I did with an older GARMIN hand held GPS I had then.
@@RKHarm24 Good plan!
Lance I don't see anymore Forester vids from you .Do u still own the Subaru.?
Hi James, I've been taking a CZcams break, but I'm looking to get things rolling here again now that it's warming up. Coincidentally, I did trade my Forester this week for something a bit... bigger. It will be on the channel soon. :)
I think i found my next vehicle... i wanted something good on gas, has the room and the awd capability for snow
How do you like the tire carrier? Looks great!
I no longer have the Subaru, but it worked well. Although I think the design of the RIGd Ultraswing looks much better and probably lighter. I'd look at that one too.
I want to know your ground clearance before and after the lift kit. Greatly appreciated!
8.7 inches stock, with the lift it'd be around 10 inches because it's a 2 inch lift
@@itsyaboimat2393 2" lift kit I don't think considers the radius of the new tires. So maybe it's a bit more like 8.7" +3". (Where exactly to they measure 8.7"? At the control arms?)
5 mpg drop and new CVT evey 30,000 miles
Do you think you could go any bigger on the tires?
There are some guys running the 30x9.5-15 tires on these, but I'm certain they have done some even heavier modifications to the fender than I have or have an aftermarket or cut front bumper that frees up the space on the front of the steer tires. Other than those notes, yeah they'll fit. :)
High 20s in the NA Forester? I have a FXT and usually get high 20s! Also, why keep the roof rack on all the time? I just put mine on when I put on whatever is going on the roof rack (my kayaks, bikes, skybox etc)
This definitely means that when I get offroad tires/wheels, they're only going on when I need them; otherwise I'll keep my all seasons and stock rims on
Right, and it's probably stock and on stock wheels and tires and I'd bet, like most people, you're not calculating true MPG at the pump, but rather reading the dashboard which isn't very accurate and is always optimistic. You're making an apples to oranges comparison. As always, it comes down to personal pref. I use my rack more often than not.
Oh, and on top of all of this... you have to use premium fuel. I can use the cheapest 87 octane ethanol available and still get the aforementioned mileage thus a better metric is 'cost per mile' and even the stock FXT can tough a modded 2.5i in that category.
Did any of these modifications void the warranty on your forester?
No.
Varies by dealership.
Does the lift kit affect the eyesight system on forester?
I didn't have Eyesight on this vehicle, but my guess is no.
do you use ethanol free gas?
Very rarely. Typically no.
Where can I get the roof rails?
Which ones? The low rails that run parallel along the vehicle are factory Subaru rails. Those are an OEM product from Subaru . You would need these or something similar to mount the perpendicular crossbars. In other words, anywhere. Subaru makes some, so does Yakima, Thule, and about a million other brands.
@@HighjakSecondary The factory rails that run parallel along the vehicle I’ve tried looking on the net everywhere and I just can’t find it is it possible to get them after purchasing the vehicle is just some thing that has the Come stock from the factory ?
@@gerardofaustin8156 Any Subaru dealer should be able to sell you these. Aftermarket options are available too.
@@HighjakSecondary Thank you so much one more thing can you recommend the aftermarket ones so I can take a quick look?
@@gerardofaustin8156 Yakima and Thule should both have options. :)
taking your bars off alone will probably give you another mpg
For sure. I not longer have this vehicle, but I noted 1-2 mpgs loss with the bars and wind fairing up top.
HighjakSecondary what’d you get instead? I’m debating between a 2017/18 XT and a 2012/13 GX
