  • This week’s topic started with us wondering what 10-year-old sports car we would buy. It turned into a discussion about one of our favorites from a decade ago, the Z4 M Coupe. With Michael Prichinello and Zac Moseley from The Classic Car Club Manhattan.

Before I bought my Z4 coupe I drove both models. The "Regular" Z4 Coupe was what I chose based on drivability. They both were great driving cars, but I felt that the "Regular" one was a better driving car. The "M" lived above 5500rpm, and was GREAT at high rpm, yet, the regular one ran better all around. Thus a dissension I made back then, is still valid today, as I still drive it on a daily basis. After 133,000 trouble free miles I'm STILL pleased with my choice......

think the coupe looks great though, we need a coupe shape with a hard top retractable roof, best of both worlds, probably not possible to make and it would be too heavy, the e89 looks ok but still not as great as the e86 coupe

But that S54 engine is just a masterpiece, I honestly don't think there is any other engine in that price range which can beat it. Good power output, driveability, decent torque, revs to 8.000RPM, sounds awesome, decent fuel consumption (11-13l/100km), reliable, not to heavy

A little over a year ago I bought an '07 Z4 M Coupe, black on extended black leather. An unknown past and 100,000 miles on it. I drove it before I bought it and what a beast (lol, especially with the Sport button on). I LOVE THIS CAR so much - I've had a lot of Mustangs including a Saleen and also owned an '04 Honda S2000. All shite compared to this god of a car. I've never driven or been in a car with so much soul. I will pay for and replace anything and everything this car needs to keep it for a very long time. Engine blows? So what, I'll replace it.
Reliability? For many years I avoided used BMW's cus I "heard" they were unreliable. Dead wrong. 107k and 10 years old and this thing has been faultless. It literally drives like it's brand new and I've had not one problem of ANY kind with it.
Lastly, if you own one of these do yourself a favor and get the Stromung mufflers. Not too loud at all for this old guy but still quite beefy.

I watched/ listened to your z4 m coupe episode this morning on my way home from work this morning. I live on Long Island and work nights in NYC. I have had an interest in this car since the first one debuted. Now Im sure prices will soon skyrocket. Any way I really enjoy the show it keeps me entertained on my 120 mile round trip commute. I have been into ATV motor-cross for some time and now closing in on forty and being a new parent comes with time restraints and the hobbies take a back seat. I had always been into cars since my father has been a mechanic and hot rod enthusiast. Life, careers, and economic recessions get in the way sometimes of plans and goals. I had my own business, bought a house with enough property for a detached 3 car garage and was doing well before 2009. Well a career change and a few years later I found myself in a VW GTI to commute with. Shortly thereafter with a slew of bolt ons and suspension mods I found myself looking forward to my commute and feeling like a kid again driving my brothers Honda Civic SI hatch and Integra's of the early nineties. Now I am at a good place in my career Im looking for a newer car being that I put almost 200k on the GTI. This leads me to ask a the question if you had a commute like mine what would you buy knowing it will depreciate fast. Although I have a diesel pickup for bad weather I was looking at a 2012-13 Audi TTS for an awd sporty option with comfort. Or would you continue to drive the GTI and buy something along the lines of the Z4 M coupe or a 997 911 for the weekends and a day here or there to work. I would like to start doing some track days in the near future. Thoughts? Im having a tough time deciding.

The z4 3.0si coupe is an excellent alternative to the Z4 M coupe since it's 200 lbs lighter (all in the front end) with a magnesium block engine, and still excellent power. The 3.0si coupe is one of the lightest BMW rwd sports cars.

I bought an '01 BMW Z3 3.0i last year with only 19k miles on it. It obviously isn't up to M spec, but the one thing about that car that I noticed them say in this video is that it made me enjoy driving again. There is something about the combination of attributes that just makes me want to drive it. In fact, I am being very careful with my modifications so I don't ruin that inherent goodness. I could care less if it isn't faster than a Mustang. It is such a pure joy to drive that it doesn't matter. I imagine the Z4M is much the same. I am keeping my eyes out for one to add to my stable.

I could never explain the sensation, but to me that is the most exciting gifts a good handling sporty car could give me, as a driver. I have only felt it once before, and believe it of not that was in an 87' Honda Prelude. I think the secret is in the long front hood and the driver sitting further back.--- Any other cars that you know of that fit this type of entertainment? I'll be in the market in a few months.

As an owner of a '07 Z4M Coupe, I must say this car has really been a great one to own. I find this car is a blend between a GT car with a great aptitude for distance, and an agile sports car. After owning many different sports cars, this now shares my garage with a turbo '00 Impreza and an '86 MR2 (turbo swap in process). Random bit of info, but the M has nearly the same wheelbase as the old MR2, but considerably more width.
In my eyes, this car is a true gem. To me, this provides nearly the same driving experience as a 911, but priced in a similar bracket as the Cayman. The Cayman feels slightly less powerful, and a breeze in the corners. However, the reality is you just don't have to work for it. From there, conversations generally refer you up to the 911 which of course provides a little more of a challenge. To me, this car just bridges the gap and is extremely rewarding. Essentially, it punches a little above it's weight bracket. When at the track, the M makes the top 10% of performance something you have to really hone your skills with, but blissful to drive within the lower 90%. As such, I find myself driving this car nearly every day.

I've been seeing Z4 M Coupes getting a lot of attention lately, but I don't think people give the non-M roadsters enough credit. I've used a 2006 with the N52 as a daily for 2 years now and a lot of the sensations you guys described translate to the car. Sitting behind the middle of the car, putting the top down, hearing the 6 wailing, and enjoying the "double click" shifts never gets old and reminds me of why I love driving. For similar mileage, you can get one for less than an S2000, which is a better sports car, but a Z4 will give you 90% of the performance and a better all-around car and equally enjoyable experience.

I won't argue with your pick here. That looks like a ton of fun to drive. But, now that I am older, I want something slightly more comfortable and with more space because I can't have a garage full of cars. So I'd go with an XK until the FType ages. I had a 97 and loved it. More of a sports tourer than a true sports car, but it's good enough to have fun in. Pikes Peak was a riot.

I like the idea of working on the actual driving. Putting wider more low profile tires because that "should" handle better can be a big mistake. Same with stiffer suspension for its own sake. I had a 61 E-Type that did not have great ultimate stick but was a joy to drive and rewarded a good touch. You could steer with the throttle through a turn and getting the gear shift just right was a rewarding experience. I did do a lot of small mods but never chased more horse power for its own sake.

1815 Z4M coupes were built over three years for North America, making it pretty rare. Which means that you are going to pay for some expensive work/parts when repairs need to be done. Also, for those who slam Corvette interiors, the base Z4M was no better than the 2005 C6, with acres of black, featureless plastic and I say this as a BMW owner. The Z4M looks great (at least on the outside) and is fun to drive. The review is just about that, and not about "value," or how much you get for your money. For the $18-25,000 they go for now you certainly get a cool car that won't look like anyone else's.

N55 is more reliable yes, but the N54 has forged internals.
BMW realised that people were tuning the N54 (using JB4) and it was beating the more expensive M3.
The N54's twin turbos were also giving problems
So they fixed the N54 by nerfing it (all cast internals), and they gave it a single turbo

Hi Guys, I just went for a Mercedes SLK 55 AMG, which was 12 years old but only 25k miles - and garaged day and night for last 10 years. It is a real iron fist in a velvet glove, but the Auto box IS dull-witted, and the handling/ride compromise is nowhere near a Boxster - but ok. For the money - in a straight line there isn't much to touch it for £15k. I've tried quite a few cars having been a London CCC member for 15 years or so. Keep up the good work

I've bought one, it's rare, looks stunning and still very modern, cruises like a proper GT, has more than enough speed (6.7s -60 & 155mph) great engine (3.2 SLK V6) and handles really well, even if it feel so rather numb to control. LegendInThaMakin values will continue to drop and in my opinion, not aging gracefully. it's a bit too big and the throttle actuator and rod bearings issues make it high maintenance. not to mention the motor wasn't a good match for the chassis. too low on torque for 3700lbs. of course just my opinion...from a former e92m3 owner

    • @LegendInThaMakin

roy kwon 1. I meant aging gracefully meaning it still looks great today.
      2. throttle actuators will go, that's a given, Rod bearings is not nearly as common as people say and asides from these two, it's an incredibly reliable car.
      3. that engine won international engine of the year from 2008-2012
      4. no, YOUR car is just heavy, the convertible is 500 pounds heavier than the e92, you should know this. If you wanted your car to be lighter you shouldn't have gotten the e93, you did that to yourself.

Car manufacturers need to stop making crap digital cars and go back to analog, everything is so disconnected and artificial feeling these days...

I go with a 2008 Lexus ISF. They are rock solid up to 200k. I wouldn’t trust anything German passed warranty.
Yes it’s a Toyota, yes it has fake exhaust tips. That’s about the most hate it gets.

we have a supercharged F-type. For me, geeze, I really don't like that car. I know I'm in the minority there. It makes too much noise. it's kind of ridiculous, cracking and popping when you're just parking it. The sound is a product of the marketing department, not the engineering department. I also find the steering very vague and numb. Again, just me.

Christopher DeFeo about the same as a Mustang which bsckseats and huge trunk. 700 lbs heavier than a Boxster. Jag is great but has some work to do.

Could not agree more with the comments! I have a '09 July Coupe model and it's something special. Did all the mechanical work (i.e. bearings, VANOS) and now pulls like a train. For the price, nothing comes close in terms of brutal, raw, zinging, screaming performance. It's been over two years of ownership and it still scares me every time I drive it.

The pendulum motion you described happens because it's exactly opposite as you described. You are sitting closer to the rear wheels so you are at the end of the pendulum which is pronounced. Small input in front of you, large output behind you. It makes for a feeling of as you stated, rotating. A car that truly rotates on it's center is like driving a bumper-car.
