King Stephen was an absolute fool! He once gave Henry II (Matilda's son) money to get into England, under the guise that he was visiting his mumsy. Little did Stephen know Henry would launch a battle against him. Oh, and Steve's son, Eustace, choked to death on a piece of eel... and Henry I, Matilda's father, shat himself to death due to complications with eels. I love history, I really do!

There is a lovely irony in this - especially when some people argue that it was sexism that encourgaed Stephen to take on Matilda when arguably he was making the point that women shouldn't be overlooked and thus his mother was part of the proper line which he was restoring.

  • @MeFraGe
    @MeFraGe Před 9 lety +305

Not to forget about Matilda's mother, who also was called Matilda, though she was born with the name Edith as daughter to the king of Scotland and later chose the name Matilda because it was more familiar to the Normans than her anglo-saxon name. Oh, and also Matilda's paternal grandmother was called Matilda (of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror). And Matilda (wife of Stephen) was also a cousin of Empress Matilda, since the mothers of both Matildas were sisters. The mother of Empress Matilda was called Edith(-Matilda) of Scotland and the mother of Queen Matilda was called Mary (for god's sake not Matilda! :D) of Scotland.

      @Jakegothicsnake Před 9 lety +5

Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Benny Andersson were the members the famous Swedish pop band from the 1970's ABBA. They are the people the historical characters in this video seem to be representing. Stephen and Henry are obviously representing Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson respectively because Stephen is portrayed as beardless and playing his sword as if it were a guitar just as Bjorn did, and Henry is portrayed as bearded and playing the table as if it were a piano just like Benny. As for the two Matildas, it's probably safe to associate Stephen's wife Matilda with Anni-Frid Lyngstad because she is portrayed as a brunette just as Anni-Frid was(though she did dye her hair red often), and Henry's mother Matilda may very well be blonde because it'd help contrast between the two Matildas. Plus Henry's mother Empress Matilda's actress is blonde like Agnetha Faltskog.

yes it was the reason the civil war was restarted, a lot of the english nobles started to get annoyed at Matilda because she was ruling as a man would, they didn't want a woman telling them what to do. Steven's wife however was doing pretty much the same thing though which is what's so amusing about the whole thing. But since she was doing it on behalf of her husband then it's acceptable to let her act like a man.

William the Conqueror, my enemies stood no chance
They call me the first English king although I come from France
1066, The Doomsday Book I gave to history
So fat on death my body burst- but enough about me!
To help remember all your kings I've come up with this song
A simple rhyming ditty for you all to sing along...
    Oh... William
Bit short that, innit? Who came next?
    William Second, cheeks were red
Killed out hunting, so it's said
    I took over- Henry One
    That's my next eldest son!
Then came Stephen- it's true, check it!
I'm Henry Two, killed Thomas Becket
    Richard Lionheart, that's right
    Always spoiling for a fight
Oh King John, what a disaster
    Rule restrained by Magna Carta
William, William, Henry, Stephen, Henry, Richard, John, HEY!
Time for my mate, King Henry Eight, to take up this song:
    Henry Three built the abbey
    Ed One hated Scots
A red-hot poker killed Ed Two
That must have hurt him lots
Ed III was a chivalry nerd
    Began the Hundred Years War
Then Richard Two was king aged ten
    Then Henry- yes, one more!
    King Henry Four, plots galore
Not least from Henry Five- moi
    Killed ten score at Agincourt
    Then Henry Six arrived!
    Edward Four, Edward Five,
    Richard III, he's bad
'Cause he fought wars with Henry Seven
    First Tudor and my dad
So Henry Eight- I was great
    Six wives, two were beheaded
    Edward VI came next
But he died young and so my dreaded...
    Daughter Mary ruled so scary
    Then along came-
    Me! I'm Liz the First
    I had no kids
    So Tudors RIP...
William, William, Henry, Stephen, Henry, Richard, John, HEY!
Henry, Ed, Ed, Ed, Richard, three more Henrys join our song!
Edward, Edward, Rich III, Henry, Henry, Edward then
    Mary One, good Queen Bess!
That's me, time for more men
    James Six of Scotland next
As English James I he led
Then Stuarts ruled, so Charles I
The one who lost his head
    No monarchy until came me
Charles Two, I liked to party!
King Jimmy Two was scary- woo!
    Then Mary was a smarty!
    She ruled with Will
    Her shoes were filled
    By sour-puss Queen Anne Gloria
And so from then we were ruled by men
    'Til along came Queen Victoria!

And so began the Hanover gang
    George One and George Two!
Grim! And George III was quite absurd
    'Til I replaced old him!
King George IV , and no heads forth
    Was angry, fat and cross
    Hang on!
    It's true you beat Napoleon
But we're mostly a dead loss
    Bang on!
Old William IV was a sailor
    Ahoy!
It's nearly the end of the story-a
