The New Eruption in Iceland Could Become Very Destructive - Location, Maps and the Scenario

  • I'm sad to say that this eruption starts extremely strong and the magma flow is likely over 100 cub.m.pr. sec. and the fissure length is close to 4km. I don't think it's one single soul from Grindavík sleeping tonight while the town begs its fate and we can only hope for a good outcome since lava barriers hold for only so long, and this amount of lava is simply hard to deal with. We did however get good news shortly before 03:00 GMT from the Coast Guard helicopter that confirmed that lava is currently not on the way to town that has been evacuated since November 10th. We remain hopeful!
    Update December 19th 11:00PM
I drove to Reykjavik after the the eruption started to do some filming on the Reykjanes Peninsula for the next update, December 20th. although the power of the eruption has decreased a lot today, not even rescuers are allowed to be in Grindvík because it is not considered unlikely that the fissure will erupt within the town since the land by Svartsendi has only dropped by 5cm, so scientists assume that er might just be seeing the first stage of the ongoing eruption.
More about this in my next update.

I am so sorry for the people of Grindavik and the surrounding areas; but I still send you Season's Greetings and hope you can find ways to have a nice Christmas. 🎄💕
On the other hand, I find volcanoes, and the formation of new ones, fascinating. 🌋

Iceland is simultaneously the most beautiful and scary place on earth. Wonderful people, a lovely languags and breathtaking landscapes, but, it's also a geological nightmare. Wishing for the best outcome for the local residents

Thank you for your update/reporting. Praying all the people remain safe…incredible happening. I dont know the history of grindavik but from the drone shots you can see where past lava flows went. Wonder why the city was established there because it looks, like prior lave flows went right through the area that is now the town

Gylfi explains this in many of his past videos - the very small town of Grindavik (not a city) was established there precisely because the historic lava flows created a safe harbour / port for fishing on what is otherwise a very rough / exposed coastline.

Same reason people lived in New Orleans despite it being a bad idea and even went back to it after Katrina.

Gylfi thanks for the most detailed explanation of the situation. Outstanding footage from the location before and after the eruption. Hopefully the barriers will work and keep everything safe from the lava.

Commenting on the 20th, I am so glad the town's people were delayed in their return now. Despite all calls to not try to go there, today 1 person had to be rescued. So self oriented to not think of the safety of those who have to rescue them, especially poignant at this time of year. My heart goes out to all the people that cannot be at home right now. Be safe and Mid Winter Blessings to you.

Thank you very very much for that grafic at 1:04. While others have the fissure pictures too, and even the well known live feed Cameras already known from last year had shown the eruption this night already, no one had the actual location in comparisson.
You are givving a good idea where this is all happening.
