Eruption Number 6 Is Off To a Bad Start - The Complete Peninsula Without Central Heating
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 02. 2024
- This latest eruption has exposed a serious infrastructure vulnerability or neglect since almost every house on the Reykjanes Peninsula is now without central heating, and we ask our selves how we could let that happen we all the knowledge we have gathered since 2021. The lava has however flowed extremely fast this time, but we should have moved this pipeline a long time ago.

Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
The damage to the heating supply at this time of year must be a horrible problem - hope they can sort it out as quickly as possible. Best wishes from the UK
They are working on it now, could take 2 days to make a bypass pipeline
Well the main pipe that gives water to thosunds has already been destroyed by lava, (got caught on live stream), thankfully the power plant already had dug ditches put pipes underground and they need to connect it as soon as possible (hopefully with in 2-3days) it is literally minus -8c outside,
Civil defense already declared state of emergency
The town area is riddled with underground rifts, deep rifts, and the eruptions could continue every few weeks for months or longer but doubt they can fix the pipes in time with the earth quakes making more rifts.
@@poetmaggie1 Pretty sure they are talking about the town of Keflavík, not Grindavík. Grindavik is being maintained, but not really lived in at the moment. That plant delivers hot water to the peninsula, not just that sole town.
All people around this area, Sandgerði, Garður, Reykjanesbær are buying up petrol, gas and oil generators.
the construction workers working on the barriers as the lava approaches are seriously heroic as are all the folks involved in the protection and diversion works. Thanks Gylfi
Go, brave little barriers! You can do it!
They weren't cheap so they better work :)
@@JustIcelandic May have already paid for themselves previously, saving homes?
@@Mrbfgray Saving homes? Were they really saved when the town is now unlivable?
@@Thyalwaysseek A lot of people still have possessions in there houses hopefully they can get all their stuff out
@@nzsmithsi Doubtful, the town gets more unstable by the day.
I was watching live as the lava was RACING toward the workers who were closing the gap in the barrier, my heart was in my throat! It looked like the lava got very close to them!! 😰
I saw that too! The lava was running faster than the digger.
in which video? thats scary!
The camera made it seem like it was going to the barrier but it’s obviously due to the angle, went down the slope behind
yes and at a point it looked like the diggers were surrounded@@maysrg
@@dissociate_d it was on the mbl live feed, scary stuff!
30.000 people affected, that´s almost 10% of all Icelanders. To say that this is getting catastrophic sounds like an understatement.
Yeah now imagine if the next ones comes closer to the capital this could depopulate Iceland by 50% if everything goes in the worst way possible however unlikely that is

Icelanders were said to be very smart.
Although, almost 10% of the population built a town atop of a volcano. 😂 😊
@@edwardsmith1060 the entire island is built of volcanoes, so there's no building there that doesn't sit on one

I love they way you say “Iceland” in closing. It’s very inviting. You need to get voiceover gigs promoting travel to Iceland and Icelandic products. You have a a very audio-genic voice!
Totally agree
I agree with that also! I love hearing that sentence "Hello and GREETINGS from ICELAND" and "Best regards from volcano island ICELAND". Just amazing! 😁
I thought I was the only one who thought that.
Do you not think other things might take preference in his thinking than Iceland welcomes you vid's?? Watching lava flow towards 1 of the countries biggest draws isn't actually going to pull tourists in especially as is being said that the thermo heating works is in dire threat!! Voiceover gigs!! WTF its his country at threat??
@@russell-di8js Most areas who have a significant income through tourism recover better from disasters when the tourism continues. Because, you know, they need money to rebuild.
I can only imagine the worry, stress and anxiety people involved are facing. All I can offer is my sincere sympathy. I wish you all my best and hope nobody else gets hurt. God bless.
And their will be the day of reckoning as the hot lava will spew from the earth, and cleanse it of sin
It's hilarious you say 'god bless'. If you believe in god, isn't god either making this happen, or letting this happen?
Imagine how little worry, stress and anxiety they felt all thise years they did nothing to prepare for this.
Just imagine… all that fear and worry for Iceland but not for 10,000+ children killed violently and starved in Gaza
@@plainsong17 are there not people marching in the streets calling for a ceasefire, are there not politicians all over the world condemning the war?
What do you MEAN!
Oh!! This is not a good day for the Reykjanes peninsula. I hope everyone is ok. Stay safe and warm as possible.
Thanks, there will be some cold houses there tonight, repair underway
Iceland is such an amazing land! Fire and ice!! Be well, and god bless the people of Iceland.
I enjoyed watching the earlier eruptions because they were in an area that didn’t affect people. Now I find myself watching in horror at the destruction of peoples lives. Their homes, their jobs… I grieve for them. Be safe!
To all Iceland loving people:
This is what it means to live on the two tectonic plates...Icelanders will deal with it..this isn't sad or terrible this is inconvenient but this just Iceland getting a little bit bigger..we aren't disabled we are able to deal with it and we will..... Now our heroes go out and do their thing saving valuables and lives ❤❤❤ God bless ❤❤❤
Thank you for this. My son was actually in his car heading towards the airport when the eruption began, he said it was quite scary!
Yes they start impressive :)more than a campfire
@@JustIcelandic just a bit! Hope it settles down without causing too much damage…
Wow!! Number 6 is powerful!! Thank you for your footage. You do such an excellent job!!❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Stay safe Gylfi ❤
Thank, will do :)
It’s astonishing how fast the Lava is moving…
Mafic lava has very little silica so it's not very viscous.
Dear Gylfi, my best wishes are with You Like allways and all the Islanders who lost their homes and all the brave workers who build the barriers right in front of the Lava!!!!
Drive carefully Gylfi, stay safe. This news and footage is not unexpected, yet is still a shock. God bless Iceland.
Much appreciated! and greetings from Iceland
I wish you and all the people, animals and every living being the best.
Appreciated with thanks from Iceland :)
Thank you again. Unfortunately the heating and the electricity are off in Grindavik, but it seems the eruption is already losing power. Drive carefully.
😱 Oh no! Poor Eruption Number 6! ❄ Winter without central heating sounds like a chilly challenge! Sending warmth and good vibes your way! 🔥
Good grief! Look how fast it's travelling! 😲 I saw on the cams how busy workers are, filling in the barrier gaps with non-stop trucks dumping tons of rocks/dirt for the heavy diggers to move in place.
God bless all Iceland. Keep safe.
Thank you...
3:04 this footage is really great for working out where the lava flow is in relation to the power plant & Blue Lagoon. Also useful to see how it has overflowed the water pipeline.
I've actually stopped going to UK media now for coverage, I just use your channel. Tells me what I need to know without the gumph
I am tempted to say “what” UK media coverage?!
@@Xoilen that attitude doesn't work when we have federal governments..... criminal ones at that
Omg Gylfi taking out the water is terrible i know how cold im was in jan let's pray they can get it fixed asap.... 😢
thank you so much for your short and valuable sharing.....stay save everyone...and THANKYOU for those brave helpers trying to minimize damage to people and infrastructure as good as possible...hope there will be repaired hot water and heating facilities asap. be blessed everyone
I've been watching a live feed from Geologist Shawn Willsey, and it appears (using the Reuters feeds) that the volume of magma is already slowing down. Let's hope so, as it would give them a chance to work more on the barriers.
Thanks for you helping with this coverage, Gylfi, your perspective is very valuable.
PS: If you are aware of the drone service Nature Eye, it seems they are having transport trouble getting to the area, so maybe you could help out.
Stay safe as you can, and I'll be waiting for your next report.
The barriers worked well protecting Grindavik, they should work now too. Plus eruptions are not being long. Praying for that
I am fascinated with volcanoes and enjoy seeing them erupt, but sad when it destroys man-made things. There is a definite risk building anything there near the capitol. Wishing the best for those who have lost hot water. I hope a solution is found very soon! Thanks for the update!
Our prayers are with you Iceland!🙏 From Chicago!!
Thanks Gylfi as always much respect for the workers who are doing a stand up job as always stay safe and be prepared from the Uk 🇬🇧 to Iceland 🇮🇸
Thank You for the update. Prayers for all those affected by this eruption. Stay safe. 🙏🇮🇸❣

Oof. All the best to you and all Icelanders. I was living and working in Iceland in 2012 and it is absolutely harsh to see. Even if it is something that can always happen.
Was working in Selfoss and living in Stokkseyri so i know this road in the south that goes trough Grindavik and i drove and rode it quite often. Surreal. I wish you all the best.
Greetings from northern Germany.
Thanks for the update, I hope everyone is safe and warm , I'm sad to hear that the lava has reached the pipes and roads , I see that it is -7 in Iceland , tis very worrying , I'm wishing hard that things will be ok.. all the best from London U.K.
Please keep safe on your long drive and a documentary would be amazing ❤

Oh my! WOWZERS! Love and light to those who are without heat and hot water. 🙏

The situation slowly gets catastrophic: nearly 10% of Icelanders without heating (including the international airport), one of the biggest tourist attractions closed again and the counting to the next eruption starts already. Hard to bear.
Yes about 8.1% of the islands population
G, pls be very careful, if there is any danger dont go
Be safe my icelandic friend. my prayers go out to the people of Grindavik and the people of Iceland as a whole. I cant wait to see your next update I've been tracking each eruption with thoroughness and learning more about how these eruptions work; my theory is that it is the start of a big tectonic shift that may or may not have fully started.
Thank you for keeping the rest of the world up dates by documenting this natural disaster in progress. My heart goes out to all people whom are having to deal with nonhrating in freezing cold Iceland and the constant Earthquakes, eruptions and threats of loosing your homes, neighborhoods and livelihoods. Best wishes from New Zealand 🇳🇿🤗❤
Enjoying your videos, so much more real than just news reports to read. I am coming to iceland in two weeks, have visited several times over 15 years. I know the engineers will be working both smart and hard to restore water to the penninsula because it is a serious need in winter.
Thank you Gilfy

Welcome Sabrina
so sorry to hear about the pipeline gylfi. i missed the start of the eruption this time but watched much of it until it hit the barriers near the power plant.
thanks for the update and best wishes for everyone
Thankyou for the update, thats not good news I hope they can fix the pipeline quickly. I imagine its all hands on deck because thats a lot of people affected.
Its very quick moving lava as I have seen but hopefully those barriers will hold up long enough to dam the flow and protect Grindavik
Thanks for sharing your footage and showing the overlays that was very useful.
Thank you so much for your coverage of these eruptions. I really appreciate it. I am praying that the barriers do hold and remain strong.
This didn't turn out well
Thank you. Your channel is the only one I follow concerning this news, I don't need the sensationalist versions.
Appreciated with thanks from Iceland :)
Great work, Gýlfi. Wishing you all the best. The overall outlook for Grindavík is not looking good, hope the power plant survives.
Thanks for the update - I hope this calms down soon and people can start living a 'normal' life again. Best wishes to everyone affected.
This lava is fast flowing 😮
Thank you for your updates. Of the presenters I've kept up with on the subject, yours are my favorites. My sincere hopes for a good resolution to all the issues and obstacles that the people affected by all this are confronting.
First, thank you for all your videos and updates. Stay safe up there!
Second, I really appreciate how you annotate the drone forage with labels to show where the fissure, lava, and hot water (steam?) pipeline is currently located. It gives better context to the entire situation and shows how serious this eruption is currently.
Thank you so much for all of your videos and your coverage of the eruptions! I always have to struggle to put the lives and livelihoods of the brave people of the peninsula first in my mind and heart, despite the excitement and wonder of the eruptions. I hope that the residents can find some sort of decent resolution to this crisis which is none of their doing. Thanks again!
I was there a few days ago. Crazy to think a road that I drove on is now covered with lava!
Yes this is a bit absurd :)
Thanks for uploading! Stay safe, take care!
Thanks, will do!
I hope that Iceland pulls through without a lot of infrastructure damage e.g. to the power plant - many thanks for your excellent filming and commentary. I've circulated the link to your video to my friends at church. Good to see you getting plenty of likes as I type this by the way! I just hope this doesn't develop into a 'permacrisis', i.e. eruptions every few weeks for months on end. Also that active fissures don't get too near Reykjavik (I believe incidentally that the name 'smoking creek' is not as alarming as it looks and may simply refer to sea-mist).
Thank you. As always hoping for the best for the local community.
Appreciated with thanks from Iceland :)
Praying for everyone.
Appreciated!
thanks for your good updates!
Thank you again for the info and calm description of what is happening. Best of all is that the drone footage with your input / markings give me orientation on what is happening on other channels.
It's flowing so fast... I'm looking at that brave excavator driver in his race against the flowing lava near the end of the video. I hope you made it safe and sound down south, Gylfi.
No heat in the Winter in Iceland is terrifying. Let's hope they can get it up and running and that the plant can continue to be unaffected!
What wonderful coverage you provide of these series of events! Beats any "official channel" media outlet, in my view. I also have to admit that half of my joy comes from hearing you enunciate "best regards from the volcano island ... Iceland"
Thank you for creating and uploading such good information. Sending lots of luck to Icelandic people dealing with this difficult situation.
Much appreciated :)
Thank you for the update. I hope this is a short event and that the area quickly recovers.
Seems to be short but this water pipe thing is a major disaster, new update tomorrow and thanks for watching
This is an awful time for those on Reykjanes. I really hope they can get the hot water fixed soon and the coldest weather is yet to come. Those workers trying to protect Grindavik and the surrounding area deserve a medal - and their annual salary every week, Takk for the regular update, Gylfi. Please keep us all informed. Aloha from Hawaii. I'm very impressed with your government efforts in taking care of your citizens and utilities doing what they can to protect infrastructure. I hope the lava doesn't damage anything more. I've been to Iceland and was very impressed by your geothermal plants and of course Blue Lagoon. I wish would adopt icelandic geothermal here.

That is Scary news. We were at the blue lagoon 2 years ago and it's very sobering to realise that the lava wasn't too far under the surface even then. Keep safe people.
We're meant to be there next week 🤦🏻♀️🌋😱😂
I was in Pagosa Springs earlier this week and had to point out that there is lava underneath the surface causing the hot springs and sulfer smell.

My thoughts are with the people of Iceland and the challenges they face over the coming years. I hope they'll address the infrastructure vulnerability as soon as they reasonably can. I'm sorry so many are without heat during this cold winter month. I'm sure things would be far worse had they not built those berms! Thank you Gylfi, for your wonderful, thoughtful reporting.
Thank you very much for the update.
It seems to me the lava is much more fluid than last this time. Take for instance the lava that barely came into Grindavik, it was "mush" compared to this (plumbing?) Lava like this would devastate Grindavik. 😞
In your opinion; is there a risk of a continuous and lasting curtain of fire in Reykjanes if the deeper feed rate increases? I suspect that if the rate of rifting in Reykjanes accellerates this could be a scenario. It would be interresting to have your thoughts on the subject.
Stay safe in Reykjanes, and I look forward to more of your insight and beautiful videos.
