How good was Paul Gazza Gascoigne actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Paul Gazza Gascoigne who played for Totenham, Newcastle, Lazio and Rangers for most of his career, not only one of the greatest attacking midfielders of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Paul Gazza Gascoigne ranks and just how good he actually was.

I encountered Gascoigne in a London Airport and my children were with me. He walked past and rounded a corner. My kids were big football fans and were starstruck. I suggested that they chase Gascoigne and ask him for an autograph. They disappeared round the corner and I let them go for a minute before following. I rounded the corner to see Gazza on his knee entrancing my two young boys with his big smiles and talk.
    A lovely man.

He is. As a Boro fan he's one of a very vey Gerodies we like. Like Oasis massive Citeh fans as we all know but on their Definitely Maybe album cover in Guigseys house they had a pic of George best. Liam and Noel would say the same about Best at Boro fans would say about Geordie Gazza even if he stayed and Newcastle all his career. Alan Shearer I just hate the man. Worst pundit ever. Didn't do much for England. AMAZING player the best striker in the Prem (arguable with Augero and probably Haaland or even Kane might outscore him I'd still say Shearer was better than Kane. I remember best mates dad and my mentor in life and career as a youth worker and also a manager of the local football team saying "There'll be a million Michael Owens they'll only be ONE Shearer when he (mo) the Ballon d'OR"
Then again he was a Boro fan like me but thought Juninho was shite. Always argued about that Im NOT having it.
RIP Andy Lockwood.😭 Whinney Banks LEGEND. Passed away from bowl cancer. Lads get ya checks in. Dont be embarrassed. You start passing blood GET TO THE HOSPITAL! GET CHECKED. Thankfully there's a massive push for this in the media specially sports like TalkSport.
The godfather of Whinney Banks even helped make the badge back in the 1960's and spent his life mentoring kids as a coach/manager and youth worker. I came up through him he took me under his wing like he hadn't done with anyone (not football I was shite but youthwork) and im the MAN I am today in big part because of him. Father figure (my dad worked away and I barely saw him from 13-30) and the most respected man I've ever seen in life by EVERYONE that knew him.

One day the patio or front garden doors were left open and he ran Into the road and got ran over by a car. He had to live in a wheel chair with a feeding tube completely dependant for the rest of his life. The driver who wasn't at fault killed himself because he felt so guilty and my father's friend and wife never recovered. We all grieved.

      @shaunewilliam1831 Před rokem +6

Agreed, but worth noting, Diego literally watched Gazza dribble through his Sevilla team when Sevilla played Lazio, and score a Diego Maradona esque goal, which was a very typical Gascoigne dribble, ability to beat 4 or 5 men, and in the match, when asked, noted what a good player Gazza was and how he knew what Gascogne can do, and was not surprised at all, , and furthermore even felt Gazza worthy of a mention in his own EL Diego autobiography, saying was an excellent player, so whilst there was no comparison, Diego himself thought of Gascoigne as a highly respectable player, worthy of his own attentions, which is credit to how good Gascoigne was as a talent. Diego Maradona would not have mentioned him otherwise, he's played with and against thousands of players, and not many get a mention by the God.

The most talented, technical, creative, and naturally gifted English football I've ever seen without a doubt. It's a shame he was so troubled with his mental health difficulties, which impacted almost every other aspect of his career from his discipline, to his mentality, and work-rate, on top of his injury struggles, because he showed his ability for England at the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96, which were their best ever results in those competitions since the 60s. Still an England legend, but as with many other talented but troubled players, one will always wonder what might have been with him had he always played to his full potential, and it's sad to see him still fighting his demons.

I can’t help but think that if he went to United instead of Spurs that Sir Alex would have been the father figure he clearly needed. A potential not realised, he was mesmeric but I think we all lost out on what he could have been.

On his day he would fit in any team of the greatest ever players. He inspired England's 5-0 defeat of Germany too!
After that dreadful tackle in the F.A. cup final before joining Lazio people said his injury ruined him and that he'd lost the explosive turn of speed over 5 yards that had made him so difficult to play against in midfield where he'd always been first to the ball... but then if you watch any of his highlight compilations you'll see that many of those clips will be from his time at Rangers and he looks absolutely magnificent! If only, if only. if only...

I think he was a very good player, but to be honest he wasn’t one of the greats that a lot of people say he was.
He has had so many opportunities & help to get his life back on track but just goes back into self destruct mode.
The sad thing is that we will one day wake up to a news paper heading that he has been found dead in the gutter somewhere which would then make it very sad.

For me the icon factor would be 10 and he never played for a club i supported. Maybe its just england, but you could say "Gazza" to most people even if they dislike football, and they'd know him instantly, even just show them a photo and i think a lot would be able to name him - thats not the case with a lot of modern footballers even those playing week in week out in the prem.
He was one of the biggest characters i've known about in the sport. When he played for Everton he drank in the same pub as my dad and his mates and he'd be slamming down pints of bacardi breezers and regaling the bar with crazy stories of mad adventures he'd been on, which very few where clean enough that my dad could tell them to me the next day.
From his insane skills, the tears, the comedy to turning up to try to reason with a serial killer (with a fishing rod and 6 pack of beers) how is he not a 10 out of 10 icon?!
Such a shame he had the demons he did, or there'd be no denying him his place amongst the elites of the game. incredible to watch play, but i agree with what you said - ratings for him is hard to do.

Up until his terrible, self inflicted injury against Forest in the FA Cup Gazza was unstoppable. He was never quite the same after that but still better than anyone else. Rooney suffered a similar fate though his injury was not from a reckless tackle

I wonder if he went to man utd all those years ago would ferguson have had more success calming him down and getting the most from his undoubted ability. His life may have turned out so differently.I'm a liverpool fan but can help admire how ferguson got the best out of players especially flawed players that other managers couldn't control.

I think it was down to his personality as well. He was just a working class lad who loved to play football for the sake of playing football. But personally I think Peter Beardsley was the most underrated English player ever and I thought he was better then gazza in his later years.
