    How good was Juan Roman Riquelme actually? #GOAT
    New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Pavel Nedved who played for Boca Juniores, Barcelona and Villareal for most of his career, not only one of the greatest playmakers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Juan Roman Riquelme ranks and just how good he actually was.

    I like to think that every brazilian my age saw this guy as a true force of nature. He always seemed ready to demolish any brazillian club that played against boca, and although i was only a kid in 2007, what he did to Gremio in the Libertadores can never be erased of my mind. And i remember very well that there was a weird mix of fear and admiration when a brazillian club played against riquelme. It was as if everyone hated facing him in the field but at the same time really wanted to see him playing for their club.

      I can't believe there are so many brazilians called "Riquelme" because of him... I don't know if an argentinian would ever call his son Rivaldo, Ronaldo, or Romario... maybe we are really that egotistic as argentinians... I still remember when Brazil was kicked out of a World Cup and the brazilians said they were going to support Argentina because of Tevez... you really are the world capital of football I think. Bigger than us on that sense.

    I have never forgotten Riqelme. Such a classy player. I truly believe his speed was very deceptive. He made the defense feel like they could take the ball away from him but they never could. Riqelme was a true pace setter which is a quality that has been lost. Its about knowing what the game needs. Sometimes its to slow it down and keep position. Other pace setters in my opinion, Pirlo, Gerrard, Blanco, Totti, Nedved, Kaka,Zidane and Ronaldinho. Blanco being the least known but great for his national team. Players that can keep the ball, pass to create separation, score from free kicks, create for him self, finish infront of gol and have the mental toughness to kick penalties...thats what a true #10 is. Eyyy, I was really hoping I'd get to see my personal icon Roman on your channel when I recently subscribed! Great video, I love the depth of your research and how fair you score. Couple of notes I noticed didn't make the cut, not sure if it would affect the score, but:
    I didn't hear any mention of his 2006 world cup performance. There's a historic game vs Serbia Montenegro where they won 6-0 with total possession and a passing percentage at 99, Roman being the playmaker involved. Stuff of legends, in fact, the team only lost in quarter finals after a dubious decision by Argentina's coach Pékerman to sub Roman out, after he was instrumental to the goal that put them ahead. That game went to penalties after Abondanzieri got injured and the rest is history.
    Also, Iniesta has said that he was very inspired by Riquelme's style, how he controlled the ball and what vision he had for his passes and shots. Considering they only knew each other for a year, I'd say Roman's impact on the players around him made up for the shitty attitude...at least a little bit, lol.
    Great video, hope to see more of my favorite Argentinian players coming up!

    Probably if young people wont never understand how amazing riquelme was back in the day. Extremely underrated player. Probably the most underrated player of all time.
    He hasnt too many goals and assists and isnt fast and strong like what todays football demands. Imagine how great he was. When his best games were against toughest teams of those times.
    Watch his games against. Real Madrid (of zidane figo r9) Barcelona (ronaldinho deco xavi puyol and marquez) inter, brazil (ronaldo, adriano, kaka, ronaldinho, r. Carlos) where he dismantled these galacticos single handedly

    Remember when Riquelme and Diego Forlan played for Villareal? If memory serves me correctly, Forlan became the top scorer in La Liga that season and simply credited it to Riquelme's genius. I think they crashed out the UEFA Champion's League in the semi-finals that year. He was such a joy to watch. Easily in the top 10 best footballers of all time alongside Del Piero & Rui Costa

    This the way some egomaniac coaches try to destroy a player by imposing their system ! If you get a player like Messi , riquelme , Ronaldo you can't kill their magic you have to accommodate their style of game

    Again, I would completely dump the Icon status and trophy cabinet categories, because that's completely irrelevant to the real quality of the player and it keeps proving again and again that it can render even the best players as not as good as they really were. Besides, you gave Riquelme Icon factor 9/10 based on how he's viewed in his homeland and completely disregard how he's viewed in Europe but did the exact opposite with Nedved and some other players. The same with trophy cabinet. Nedved has silver and bronze from Euro, many Serie A titles, many international individual trophies and Ballon D'or and his trophy cabinet is objectively bigger and still he got lower score.

    • @andreomorais2615
      @andreomorais2615 Před 3 lety

      But you have to factor in that argentinians worship Riquelme as if he was a god and trophy cabinet really gives players an equal ranking

    • @Libzalii
      @Libzalii Před 3 lety

      This should be argued about Cristiano being a Top 5 player of all time, accolades and trophies don't make you one of the best ever, but in reality... He's not Individually close to other greats and is just a Goalscorer.

    • @damasek219
      @damasek219 Před 3 lety

      @@andreomorais2615 then you have to factor that Czechs and also many Italians worship Nedved even more. He's Czech and Juventus legend. It's irrelevant argument.

    It's a shame he did not continue at Villareal. I remember the Villareal of the mid 2000s was such a dark horse in European football, you could tell it's one of those last major teams where the players play because they love the game.
