Brhlík lesní - The Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europea)
Brhlík lesní (Sitta europaea) je malý druh pěvce z čeledi brhlíkovitých (Sittidae). Tvoří řadu poddruhů, z nichž v Česku žije brhlík lesní středoevropský (Sitta europaea caesia).
Popis
Délka: 13-14,5 cm
Rozpětí křídel: 23-27 cm
Váha: cca. 23 g
Velký přibližně jako vrabec, má zavalité tělo, krátké končetiny, ocas a krk, velkou hlavu a šídlovitý zobák.
Vrch hlavy a těla je šedomodrý, letky jsou tmavé.
Černý pruh, který se táhne od kořene zobáku přes oko až k týlu, bývá u samic poněkud užší.
Líce a hrdlo jsou bělavé, spodina žlutooranžová (u severo- a východoevropských populací bílá), boky a spodní krovky ocasní narudlé, u samce velmi tmavé, oči černé a končetiny žlutooranžové.
Létá rychle a obratně v plochých vlnkách.
Hlas
Vábí hlasitými hvizdy i jemnějším sýkořím „sit sit“.
Zpěv je trylkovitý, v základě zní jako „kvikvikvi…“.
Varovný hlas je hlasité, rychlé „ťuiťuiťui“.
Výskyt
Území Eurasie a v severozápadní Afriky (tzv. palearktické rozšíření).
Zdržuje se převážně v listnatých a smíšených lesích se starými stromy, běžný je však také v zahradách a městských parcích.
Nejhojněji se vyskytuje v nížinách, ve vyšších nadmořských výškách je již vzácnější.
Život
Dobře šplhá po stromech, jako jediný evropský pěvec i hlavou dolů.
Potravu, kterou tvoří zejména drobný hmyz, vyhledává ve škvírách v kůře nebo těsně pod ní. V zimě se živí hlavně semeny; často navštěvuje krmítka spolu se sýkorami.
Celoročně si aktivně dělá zásoby, které pak postupně vyhledává. Šikovně si poradí s oříšky: zasune je do škvíry v kůře a zobáčkem vyklove otvor k jádru.
Hnízdění
Hnízdí jednou ročně od března do června v dutinách stromů, nejčastěji vydlabaných některým datlovitým ptákem, zvláště pak ve starých dubech.
Nepohrdne ani budkou. Pokud je vletový otvor příliš velký, zazdí ho částečně hlínou, aby dovnitř nemohl žádný větší druh. Dutinu vystýlá převážně kousky borové, modřínové nebo dubové kůry.
Ve snůšce bývá 5-9 bílých, hnědě skvrnitých, 19,6 × 14,7 mm velkých vajec, na kterých sedí samotná samice 14-17 dní. Mláďata hnízdo opouštějí po 22-25 dnech.

The Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a small passerine bird found throughout temperate Asia and in Europe. There are more than 20 subspecies in three main groups.
Description
It is a short-tailed bird with a long bill, blue-grey upperparts and a black eye-stripe.
Length: 14 cm (5.5 in)
Wingspan: 22.5-27 cm (8.9-10.6 in)
Weight: 17-28 g (0.6-1 oz)
The male It has blue-grey upperparts, a black eye-stripe and whitish throat and underparts. The flanks and lower belly are orange-red, mottled with white on the undertail.
The stout bill is dark grey with a paler area on the base of the lower mandible, the iris is dark brown and the legs and feet are pale brown or greyish.
The female is similar in appearance to the male, but may be identified by her slightly paler upperparts, a browner eyestripe and a more washed-out tone to the flanks and lower belly
Habitat
The preferred habitat is mature deciduous or mixed woodland with large, old trees, preferably oak.
Voice
The Eurasian nuthatch calls frequently, usually with a loud, sharp dwip normally repeated twice, sometimes more often if excited.
It has a shrill sirrrr or tsi-si-si alarm call, and a thin tsit pre-flight call.
The song is a slow whistled pee-pee-pee with many variants, including a faster version, and may be intermingled with the call.
Life
Nuthatches move on trees with short leaps, and do not use their tails for support.
Their flight is fast, with wings closed between beats, and is usually of short duration.
Pairs hold permanent territories, and nest in tree holes, usually old woodpecker nests, but sometimes natural cavities. If the entrance to the hole is too large, the female plasters it with mud to reduce its size, and often coats the inside of the cavity too.
The 6-9 red-speckled white eggs are laid on a deep base of pine or other wood chips.
Eats mainly insects, particularly caterpillars and beetles. In autumn and winter its diet is supplemented with nuts and seeds.
The nuthatch can forage when descending trees head first, as well as when climbing. It readily visits bird tables, eating fatty man-made food items as well as seeds. It is an inveterate hoarder, storing food year-round.
