Drvodělka fialová - The violet carpenter bee (Xylocopa violacea)
Drvodělka fialová náleží do řádu blanokřídlých (Hymenoptera) a patří k největším příslušníkům čeledi včelovitých.
Popis
Velikost: až 30 mm
Rozpětí křídel: asi 40 mm
Lesklé černé tělo s krátkými tmavošedými chlupy.
Křídla jsou tmavá a lesklá a mají nafialovělý nádech.
Nohy má silně ochlupené.
Samci mají tykadla s mírně zahnutou špičkou.
Podobá se velkému čmelákovi, ale na rozdíl od něj má fialově lesklá křídla a méně ochmýřené tělo.
Výskyt
Druh se vyskytuje především v jižní části střední Evropy, ve Středomoří a ve střední Asii.
V Česku je nejhojnější v teplých oblastech jižní Moravy.
Mohou překonávat velké vzdálenosti, v důsledku globálního oteplování se hranice rozšíření drvodělek posunuje severním směrem.
Život
Je to neškodný hmyz, který se člověku zpravidla vyhýbá.
Jedinci obou pohlaví zimují a na jaře se pak páří.
Přezimují v různých škvírách ve stromech nebo ve zdi, aktivní bývají od prvních jarních dnů do konce září, páří se v květnu.
Přes léto si samičky samy vrtají vlastní hnízdní komůrky.
Patří mezi včely samotářky a hnízdí v chodbičkách vydlabaných ve ztrouchnivělém dřevě.
Samice drvodělky vyhlodává do starého dřeva až 30 cm dlouhé a 13 mm široké svislé chodby, které přepažuje příčkami z drtě a lepkavých slin. Tak vzniknou komůrky, kterých bývá až tucet. Každou komůrku naplní zásobou potravy a pak do ní vloží po vajíčku.
Larvy zásobuje směsí pylu a nektaru.
Larvami drvodělek se živí datlovití a vlhovití ptáci.
Jsou významnými opylovači, pylosběrný aparát mají na zadních holeních, pyl a nektar také přenášejí v trávicí trubici.
Dávají přednost spíše jižním rostlinám a proto jsou v Česku málo rozšířené.

Xylocopa violacea, the violet carpenter bee, is the common European species of carpenter bee, and one of the largest bees in Europe. It is also native to Asia.
Description
Size: up to 1.18 in (30 mm)
Wingspan: about 1.57 in (40 mm)
The body is shiny black with short dark gray hair.
The wings are dark and shiny and have a purple tinge.
The legs are heavily hairy.
Males have antennae with a slightly curved tip.
It looks like a large bumblebee, but unlike it, it has purple-shiny wings and a less hair on the body.
Habitat
Its range extends from Europe eastward across Asia as far as central China, restricted to latitudes above 30 degrees.
Life
It is not particularly aggressive, and will attack only if forced to.
Like most members of the genus Xylocopa, it makes its nests in dead wood.
Violet carpenter bees hibernate overwinter and they emerge in the spring, usually around April or May.
In the late spring or early summer, they may be seen around searching for mates and suitable nesting sites.
After mating, the gravid females bore tunnels in dead wood, which is where the name "carpenter bee" comes from, although old nest tunnels may be used.
Like other solitary bees, the female creates the nest alone. The eggs are laid within a series of small cells, each of which is supplied with a pollen ball for the larvae to feed upon.
Hibernation is undertaken by the adults in wood where there are abandoned nest tunnels.
