This song came to Richard in a dream, it was written, performed and produced on his Rush Street album from 1992. He joked with his now ex-wife that it was laughable and stupid but she felt it was going to be a big hit. The lyrics talk about a girl named Mary who disappeared while out on a walk in Hazard Nebraska. It was a Number 1 hit in 13 countries. Beautiful instrumentation and Richard's dynamic and passionate vocals bring the lyrics to life. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Rob. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Actually, I just checked my cd collection - this song is from his third album "Rush Street" (track 5). Maybe you're getting it confused with "Angelia", which is on "Repeat Offender"?
Oh, man, this one of my favorite songs, ever! I would put it on and repeat it and repeat it, just to carried away in the rapture of that beautifully haunting melody and arrangement. My feeling has always been that the sheriff raped and killed her and was trying to pin it on him. In real life, Marx almost didn’t release this song. He didn’t think it had any redeeming qualities, but his wife loudly objected and told him that this was one of the best songs he’d ever written. Thank you, Mrs. Marx!
No, he didn't do it, the sheriff did it. At the end it shows her telling the sheriff that they tell me I should be afraid of you, but I'm not, she gets in his car.
I don't think what she said was meant to be aimed at the sheriff. I think she said it to Richard earlier as the towns people were saying he was not right (so that's why they told her to be afraid of him) and I think it was added at the end of the song to make people second guess who did it. I do believe like you though that the sheriff killed her as she was running away from a car and the sheriff was the only one driving in the film clip
It was mentioned that the scarf was caught in the tree and I believe the sheriff used to blame Richard because the sheriff killed her so she wouldn't reveal that it was the sheriff
It's my absolute favorite song he did. I'm kind of moody myself, so it fits for me. I dont think he killed her. They may have went to the river but his words in the song said she went walking alone. I think for some reason she went out after he left.
My favorite Richard Marx song. I think his character in the video was a little mentally challenged & she was his only friend. I’d have to say the sheriff did it with the scarf that got caught in the tree.
@@HarriBestReactions Lol! Just my humble opinion. The fire that happened when he was younger was an accident but he was blamed for it. The sheriff knew he was easy to frame & I feel like that’s why she says to him’ everybody says I should be scared of you but I’m not “ because he had a reputation of being unstable in the town since he was a child. By the way I said “ all of my rescues are gone “ during my mom’s eulogy. She always had my back. I guess you can tell I love to talk 🤦🏻♀️ love your reactions, like how you break it down 🙌🏻
Check out Richard's early hit: "Don't Mean Nothin'" - great slide guitar work, and showing off his great vocals by bouncing across an entire octave in one measure of the chorus.
Nebraska is like out in no man's land. A forgotten place So when we hear this in America it's like man corn then a killing Not a great place to be, but i can only imagine the pain
Nope, not from a movie, but sure seems like it could have been. I want to say I read that Richard's father knew Robert Conrad, but either way, Richard became friends with him, and eventually he asked him if he would act in this video. Conrad not only agreed, he did it free of charge.
@@robtaylor5550 Thank you for the inside track Rob! That’s Cool 😎! I always liked Robert Conrad! From Hawaiian Eye, to the Wild Wild West, to Black Sheep Squadron. It’s VERY unusual for an actor to Star in THREE Successful TV Series. I guess I just lost track of Richard’s Music. I knew Cynthia briefly after meeting her at a Club on the Sunset Strip before she met Richard. Peace!
@tpatrick44 Hawaiian Eye was before my time, but I sure enjoyed the other two! I haven't watched the new Night Court and have not heard particularly good things, but seeing John Larroquette in a commercial for it the other day had me thinking it may be time to pull out my Black Sheep DVDs again. Man, did I love that show as a kid!
The video sort of explains why he left her by the river - he saw her with someone else and in his haste to get away left his scarf behind which was used to connect him to her death.
But if he saw her with someone else, why say i left her by the river? He wasnt with her so couldnt have left her.The lyrics should have been i saw her by the river 😀
@@HarriBestReactions there is a part II of the video that explains more of the story and shows different things and gives more clues as to what happened...highly suggest you watch it !
he left her by the river because he was out walking and saw her with another man making out in a car down there and realized she would never actually be his(seemed like Mary was very close to him and he was her best friend but she didn't have feelings for him in a romantic way, but he was completely in love with her)...there is a part II video that goes into more details and gives you a better answer as to what actually happens...IMO, Mary committed suicide after realizing there was nothing she could do to get him back and he was out of her life for good(as seen in part II). You can see her with the scarf down by the river with a distraught look on her face seemingly having tears streaming down her face looking like she was going to jump in this video...
Great song. Harri, check out Dan Fogelberg's Tucson, Arizona (Gazette); similar storytelling, similarly dark...but in Hazard, the main character is being framed, while in Tucson, Arizona (Gazette) the main character does indeed kill...and then kills himself. A terrifically cinematic song, to a greater degree than Hazard is.
Here in Brazil this song was part of a soap opera soundtrack in which an actress was real murdered by her scene fellow. That happened on december 28 th 1992. A sad song that also reminds us in Brazil of a real tragic end. We miss you Daniella Perez ❤
Hi Mr. Harri, It is pronounced Marks no matter how it is spelled.. I like Mr. Richard.. Hey Mr. Harri, U need to hire me as a Speech Therapist or a Speech Pathologist.. ☺ ♠Mr.G..
The sheriff for sure. I used watch this clip as a kid in the 90's and always thought he was innocent. Its about small town mentality. The town and cops hate him because he burnt the house down as a kid, and his dad was in the Army so the town would have been in favour of the dad, even though the dad left him and his mum. He felt abandoned, but it didn't make him a murderer. The cops used that against him I feel sorry for the character, and the kid. He finally found love and they killed her to make him look bad.
the song is about a man who took a woman, who he was about to dump, to the river. he let her down, she felt horrible, he left, and she died. now he feels like he is responsible for her death. not directly, but by his guilt.
Heard this for the first time on a school bus in Miami Heard this again as a truck driver passing through Nebraska a couple weeks ago Brought back memories
Traumatized as a kid by his Father leaving to be with another woman(maybe after seeing his Mother cheating with another man), then sees his Mother in bed with another man and is so upset he sets fire to the house with them inside it...now that I think of it...it shows what happens when Marx feels like he has been betrayed by a woman in his life...he gets revenge...first on his Mother for causing his Father to leave then possibly on Mary for "cheating" on him(even tho I think Mary saw their relationship as simply platonic friendship, Marx likely was head over heels in love with her but she didn't feel that wayabout him)
I think it’s cool that you think he did it. The song was never meant to absolve the narrator. The narrator could be unreliable. He either lived a traumatic life and was a victim throughout the story or he did do things he won’t admit to or can’t come to terms with.
There is a 2nd part video, there it is clearly the sheriff who is obsessed with Mary and I think he is the culprit, if you look at the patrol in the video one Mary runs out in one scene and in the river there is a close-up and The section is seen in negative, there you clearly see that it is the sheriff, Mary refused to have anything with him that is why he murdered her and blamed Richard...here I leave the video of the 2nd part! czcams.com/video/QC0dmuSYLms/video.html&start_radio=1 el policia es el actor Robert Conrad
