Funny thing about this song. Richard tells the story at his concerts. He wrote it because he wanted to write a story song. Then he put it away thinking it was awful. Finally, one night at home he recorded it so that he wouldn't forget it if he wanted it later. His wife came in and told him he should record it because it was a HIT! He says, "you know just once, us guys want to be right! So, I recorded it to show her it wasn't any good, and it became one of my number 1 hits!"

That specific story may not be true, but similar stories play out in small towns all the time. It may not be a murder that happens, but almost always those who are poor (or in this case those who are considered trailer trash) are targeted by law enforcement in those towns. If something goes wrong the first place they go to is where these people live.

Yes I am so happy you did this one! This is in my top 3 Richard Marx songs! The whole story of the song, the video, it hooks you in and makes you think, it’s just perfect! You can have endless conversations about who really killed Mary.
Fun fact: when Marx wrote this, he had no intention of releasing it. But he played it for his (now ex) wife and she told him he had to! And he had no idea it would become as big as it did!
You should do Don’t Mean Nothing next, it’s another song that tells a story and more up tempo!

I much preferred his up-tempo songs to his ballads, but this one was something else entirely. The lyrics... the tempo...the instrumentation... just something we hadn't heard from him before. This is one of my favourite songs and Richard Marx has such a great voice. The video brings to mind David Lynch and Twin Peaks in the way it's filmed in black and white and is also set in a small town and there's a dark undertone to this town that's under the surface and what happened to Mary.

This is a great song from the early 90's. Another good one by him is 'Right here waiting'-Colin Ward

The Sheriff is there to throw you off. The Sheriff had an obsession with the girl but he wasn’t the killer. Richard. Character had a history of killing people over jealousy and abandonment.

I saw Richard Max in a theatre way back in 1989 (Sydney Australia) and he performed a rendition of Beatles songs in acapella. This man can bloody sing, sing and sing some more. I've never forgotten the experience to this day!
