  • Today I'm doing a comparison of the Vox AC15c1 VS AC10 VS Mini Superbeetle. I'm not trying to determine which is the better amp, but rather what are the common points and differences.
    We'll be listening to all three amps with clean and gain tones, and I'll be using my Gibson Les Paul Junior, Feneder Telecaster and my Squier Strat.
    Let's go have a listen and let me know which amp you prefer, the AC10, AC15 or the MINI Superbeetle.
    * Thanks to Long&McQuade in Belleville, Ontario for letting me borrow the Mini Superbeetle so I could make these videos*

    There IS nothing more pleasing than a VOX amp! I'm old and disabled now, and my touring days are long gone. What was my favorite rig, was my VOX AC30, with my '67 Tele Custom! I have (for home use), a VOX VR-20. I can almost carry it, and it sounds great!

    Have to say, I love the simplicity of your videos.....they get the job done really well! Based on what I heard though, I think the Super Beetle sounds pretty tiny, boxy and thin, and I could never imagine anyone gigging it.
    Okay, to be clear, I have the AC15, and an AC4 C1x12........and I’m about to upgrade the AC4 to an AC10........this vid, and your other one, have convinced me I NEED an AC10 in my life! :)

    • @TheToneLounge
      @TheToneLounge  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the feedback. The super beetle has a switch at the back that increases the bass significantly. That can help it sound huge. But since it has the ability to support 4/8/16 ohms, you can use it with pretty much anything you want, which would make it a better contender against the other two amps. Let me know if you get an AC10, I'm curious to hear your feedback! Cheers

  • @thewoodys_surf_instrumental

    The AC15 to me sounds best. 10’s just don’t seem to deliver the punch of a 12 inch speaker. Plus spring reverb wins over digital reverb

      @@TheToneLounge yes, I did. I ended up getting the AC 10 for My Studio because it's a fairly small room. It fills the room nicely. But the AC 15 has that warmer golden sound so I hope to get that one one day just to play loud. Didn't care for the Mini because I already have the Vox Valve out -put . Thank you for asking.
      For My Studio, if I bought the AC 15, I would never be able to turn it up in order to fully achieve that rich sound. I felt the 15 was for bigger applications.

      @@TheToneLounge I feel that Amplifiers are designed for their Tone and Volume and when you don't turn them up your not getting the fullness of the tone it was built for. That's also why I got the AC 10. It's not over-kill for my room. I have the Valve Tronix and it's a nice amp but the AC 10 is much nicer. I felt the Mini was a larger amp of the AC Valve Tronix. But it is a nice Amp

  • @sid35gb
    @sid35gb Před rokem +6

    Interesting conclusion. I’ve owned an AC15 in the past way too loud for home use and really heavy so gigging will keep you fit. I’ve heard the super beetle in other reviews and it sounds really good. Although in this video it sounds quite thin compared to the others but that will be the smaller speaker that makes the difference.
    I’m a solid state guy now because tube amps are a ball ache because they don’t always like the power supply in the building and tubes could fail at any time so you’re in the lap of the gods in that side if things.

    • @TheToneLounge
      @TheToneLounge  Před rokem +1

      I hear you about solid state amps. They are reliable and require next to nothing in terms of care. I have a big fancy pants Bad cat amp that just started farting out this morning. It sounds great, but I probably have to change the tube, as it sounds like there is a snow storm in my amp.

    I own the AC15 and the Mini Superbeetle. Of course, the AC15 is the mothership of all VOX Amps. But as you said, you can put the head of the Mini Superbeetle into your backbag and plug it in anywhere. Especially - you can go straight into the PA, through the Lineout and it sounds phantastic! I use it, whenever it is not possible to carry my AC15.
    Sometimes I do a 2 amps setup at home - and the Mini and AC15 together are so much Vox, as much as you want it!
    The AC10 will have to wait, I have currently no room for it, but maybe a small AC4 will come next into my VOX collection.

      Thank you for the kind words. I don't think the AC15 is very much louder than the AC10, to be honest. They are both capable of being very loud if need be.
      I think that for home use, the AC10, for me, is the better choice. It sounds far better at lower volumes and the master volume is not as finicky with finding the sweet spot at lower settings.

      The MSB is a super cool little amp. Those replacement tubes for it are like $50. So if you grab a pair you should be good for a long time, just bring it to a tech to get it fitted. Not as convenient as regular tubes to change, but they are said to last far longer.

    @paulsummerside Před 5 měsíci +1

    Nice comparison between all three amps. Each with their own distinct characteristics.
    The Mini SuperBeetle is a cool looking man cave beast. It has perhaps the most modern character to my ears, but still with that Vox tone. It is quite HiFi. My issue with NuTube amps currently is they have only so far managed to tackle the preamp end. In other words the 12AX7/ECC83 valve curve. And not as yet the output section. In the MiniSuperBeetle it’s not really too much of an issue, but when VoX/Korg crack the output section, then NuTubes will at that point be the valve amps of the future.
    To my ears the AC10 is slightly boxy, but not in a bad way. I do think the AC15 that you bought has the nicest overall sound for gigging use.
    Don’t think there is actually a wrong choice amongst them.

    You convinced me not to by another Vox amp. I bought the Mini for Christmas and really dig the sound with my 1963 Gretsch Corvette. I thought I needed the Vox AC-15. I have owned many Vox amps over the last 53 years from a Viscount, 2 Super Beatles, Royal Guardsman, AC 10 tubes, and a 1968 AC30 TB. I now own a Berkeley III and a Buckingham (I like the MRB and the bass channel) , an Ampeg Reverbrocket, Traynor YGM, Rickenbcker TR-25 Univox U-305R. This little amp is the one I keep close by and play often. It gets almost all the clean sounds I like . I am a British Invasion guy heavy into early Beatles. Hard to decide which ones to let go.

      I play it mostly without any effects at all, but when I do, it is with a Keeley Mod Workstation, giving me one boost, one overdrive and almost any modulation I need (harmonic tremolo, phaser or rotary) in just a tiny pedal. It just sounds great, I think it is a great platform amp for vintage sounding effects. I also add a Dunlop Mini Hendrix wah.
      I would not try any metal oriented pedal through it because it would just not fit or match the amp philosophy.
      I do not understand all the buzz around the Fender Tone Master , because for me the revolution in amp occured last year with this Vox super beetle. It sounds better than my former Mesa Boogie Transatlantic which was supposed to give a Vox Sound but let me down on stage after 5 months. 2. Not too loud (my mom can and will beat me up) 😄
      3. Yes, I want an amp which can be deemed "decent" if I decide to play in a small venue
      All in all, I'm looking for a versatile amp which will retain it's signature (more or less) when turned down to bedroom levels, as well as be gig ready (by itself) for small venues and with additional accessories at medium sized venues. Nothing too crazy pro.
      What's more important is that I enjoy the amp and end up playing more and thereby learning more.

    • @TheToneLounge
      @TheToneLounge  Před 3 lety

      So here are a few pros and cons, I will let you determine which is best for you.
      1 - The AC15 is a great amp. It is packed with the most features compared to the other two. It is plenty loud with a band, great reverb/tremolo and has the Normal/TB inputs. Takes pedals extremely well.
      It is heavy, like pretty heavy. It’s not the best sounding at very low volume, although you can make it work with my “bedroom tips” video.
      2. The AC10 is great for gigs, sounds good at bedroom level, has a great sounding clean & distortion. Not too heavy to carry around either.
      If you are looking for clean headroom, this amp gets dirty fast. There’s only one input, based on the TB. Digital reverb and no tremolo.
      3. MSB sounds great at any volume. Digital reverb and Tremolo. Can be plugged into a 4,8 and 16 ohm cab. At 4 ohms the amp upscales from 25 to 50 watts. Extremely small and super light!
      It does not take pedals so well.

      Here are my thoughts.
      1. If you play a gig where you'll be mic'ed, then yes!

      3. If you play big venues without a mic, and your drummer is a Neanderthal, then I would say no.,

    I have had all three. Sold the ac15 due to the weight and having to lug around to gigs. I opted for the ac10 x2 and just got a super beetle, and probably buy two as you are right, very loud. Plus we usually mic through a house PA. Both are much lighter in weight and easy on the back and space to pack in the SUV and with the pedal board and guitars. Loved the tone of the ac15 and an ac30, but again after downloading from the ac30 to an ac15 for weight, I finally said it was again time to get lighter.

I gave the MSB to my 11 year old and kept the 30c2,15c2 and 10. Each of them give you a Dynamic for different uses. I still find myself playing all of them at different times. If you have to play with headphones, the MSB is the only one that can do it but the ac10 has a great low volume tone. Although, I can play all of them, even my AC30c2 at low enough volumes to not be obnoxious to the rest of the house. ..depends on the practice tone you need though.

    My Vox AC15 died...Vox is in the procees of replacing it for me because it was under warranty. Because it was dead I gigged with my brothers Vox Mini Beatle...I found that it does not have enough headroom to gig with easily (I use many pedals). If you play one genre (classic rock) you could make it work by diming the amp and rolling the volume nob on guitar (it cleans up so well) and rolling tone back to sit behind vocals...but if you go between jazz cleans and grunge distortion in the same set or same song you exaust the headroom too quickly and it is nearly impossible to get a lead boost...the AC15 i don't have that problem...i can set amp up clean...hit a diet pedal for crunch...stack another for heavy crunch and still hit a 15db boost for lead (not that i would do such insanity) but the headroom is there....idk...just for my band sitaution the mini beatle didnt work nearly as well. Sorry to hear about your amp. What you are saying about the mini makes total sense. When I experimented with it, I used pedals with it and it really did reduce the headroom significantly. So I can only imagine that cranking it up will reduce it further. I have pedals, but hardly ever use them. For the most part I play straight in the amp most of the time. I use pedals for gigs or for songs that require a different tone. If I were to get a MINI, it would be to plug straight in. Thanks for sharing!

    As a non player, I still think the 15 has it. the 10 sounded a little bit 'flubby' on the speakers in the start of the video. The super mini... ok for just a practice amp but would not cut it in a gig, even miced up.

      I have been using pedals thru this amp for while. At bedroom levels, its alright. Louder volumes , not so good but its more because of the chinese made celestion and not the amp itself. A high gain pedal would cause the speaker to sorta farts out. Lower the volume and it gets better. Put the head thru a 4x12 and you will be amazed. I highy recommend it. I am eyeing a few speaker replacement candidates. Will update again if I get it changed.

    One thing About the super beetle, isn’t it a solid state amp? With one tube in the power section? I have a Vox as50vt that is from 2008 and it sounds good but it’s a hybrid not a tube amp. Now I can get many great sounds out of that amp but its just kinda different compared to a tube amp. And it is a modeling amp as well, with several types of amps to choose from. But it is different. The super beetle seems more like that to me. After owning my ad50vt I wanted to experience the tones of a real tube amp. Interestingly enough my vox modeling amp is about as heavy as my ac15, maybe a little heavier even. It does have 2-12’s tho. But it’s a heavy sucker.

    • @TheToneLounge
      @TheToneLounge  Před 4 lety +1

      The amp uses the NuTube 6P1 tube, and also use that for the Tremolo. I'm not 100% certain of whether or not there is some hybrid stuff going on, I would have to do some research on that. It has a very AC top boost type of sound. It's a great little amp and I intend to buy one at some point. It's ridiculously light, and it gets pretty loud too.

      Ok so, to me, this is an easy answer but let me give you the pros and cons.
      MSB pros:
      - affordable
      - sounds good
      - no tubes/valves to worry about (only one NuTube to change)
      - digital reverb/tremolo
      - plenty loud for small gigs
      - great for home practice
      MSB cons:
      - resale value not so good
      - if it breaks, good luck finding a tech
      - not so good with pedals
      AC4 HW pros:
      - great sounding amp
      - Handwired means easy to repair
      - plenty loud for small gigs
      - great for home use
      - great with pedals
      - resale value is really good
      Personally, I would jump on that AC4. Especially for that price.

      The Tone Lounge I’ll step in and answer, as in your recording I found the AC15 to sound much fuller and even through all frequencies, without any deficiencies, if that makes sense. The Mini sounds good, but sounds smaller without the fullness coming through. The AC10 has this scooped out of phase sound in the distortion clips. Now I’m person when I’ve played these amps, I’ve enjoyed them all. My impression with the Mini is that it is a very inspiring practice amp. Awesome. The AC15 which I’ve owned twice....it’s the real deal, glorious Trem and reverb...3D chime and swirl to chords.....likes to be loud hahaha, and yes, it’s heavy!!! AC10 in person....handsome amp in its compact and perfect dimensions and weight, I agree...killer high gain available, clean to scream is very inspiring. More studio and small gig capable than the Mini. More inspiring and fun to just plug in and play out of the 3. I “want” another AC15.....I need the AC10. BUT!!!! Again based on purely your great video here....the AC15 sounds far superior. It’s just THERE!!! I’ve wrangled with guitar tones in studios for years and for me, that AC15 was the acceptable sound.
