The new AC10 Custom is a very different amp than the first Vox to bear that name. That AC10 was one of Vox’s very first amps-a more affordable, stripped down little brother to the AC15 that was then revolutionizing the English amplifier landscape.
In many respects, this new two-EL84 AC10 has more in common with the contemporary AC15. In both sonic and visual terms it may be one of the most cost-effective means to get the most familiar ’60s Vox vibe that’s come down the chute in a while.
I get excited when I see a little Vox tube amp as a studio option. I don’t own one, but when I see an AC4 or AC15 around, I start to think about possible contributions in terms of spirit, brightness, and colorful immediacy. The AC10 lends that same outward reassurance. From the black textured vinyl to the piping and diamond grill cloth, it’s classically Vox and very well put together. At less than 21 inches wide and about 16 inches tall, it’s compact, and at just over 12 pounds it’s easy to tote around. The chassis and speaker are obscured from view by a closed-back cab. That’s never fun for inspection of the amp’s inner works, but it almost certainly adds a little extra bass thump to an amp that, as we’ll see, punches outside its weight class with ease.
The control set is streamlined: a bass/treble EQ section, a reverb control, and gain and volume controls at opposite ends of the five-knob array. Unfortunately, the reverb is a digital unit rather than the spring reverb you see on the AC15 or AC30 Customs. It’s not a bad reverb, and is often key to getting the most classically Vox-y and sparkling tones. But it’s hard not to wonder if a more streamlined circuit would have sounded just a touch better and been less expensive.

What's his favorite food ?
What size shoes does he wear ?
What's his favorite color ?
Great player. Especially slide...
He also has the haircut of my aunt Linda
Hey demo guy, don't worry bout CZcams commenters hating on your style. You just keep doing you.
Never go full Ace Ventura
Word
Haha That's what I was thinking dude. I'm waiting for him to say ohh reaaaaalllllyyy
Allllrighty then!!!!!
Stuart Tate Tru dat!
ah your just talkin out of your ass
Amp sounds so good, played through one and I swear there's something about the ac10 that sounds better than the ac15 and 30. It's a shame cause I usually like my amps bigger the better but I can't deny how this ac10 makes me feel. Tremendous player john, nice review
You probably got to crank it at a bearable volume unlike the others.
@@BryanClark-gk6ie Interesting, I would have thought the deluxe would feel cleaner through to about 6-10 on the volume knob. What speaker is in your DRR? I think the ac10 is awesome for recordings too.
Just watch this video yesterday. Very good review. I told my dad about this amp. His favorite amp is VOX.
Today my dad buy this amp. Today is a good day. 👍
Megat Yaesree awesome :)
Just putting this note here because this review led me away from this amp because I thought a twelve pound amp would be a toy. It's twelve kg, about 27 pounds. Still super portable but a real amp.
Man, you're slide playing is amazing !
I came here for the AC10 amp but enjoyed your playing even more. Very very good skills
Thx for the review. Been wondering about this amp.
Amazing demo man !
Best Ac-10 reviews!! Sound great!!!
This Amp sure has me Licked and really thanks for dialing that " rig " in just like it should ! Great playing Sir, Mucho Respecto !
Great demo great playing my friend. I just bought one. You made me even more happy I did. 🎶🌪
Doug Flutie plays some damn good riffs.
Damn, John makes every piece of gear sound fantastic!
That is one cool guitar, John. Chapeau!
Nice review!!!
I love your guitar!! so beautiful!!!
This man is a renowned player. Woo! 🔥
Great playing and great review, so I can live with his hairdo just fine
Great playing / sound
I always enjoy your videos. What kind of pickups are in your tele? They look like mini wide range pickups.
Great amp...and you're the man! Great review and inspired playing.
best wishes
Dig the slide playing btw
Great playing amp sounds good too.
I think your guitar needs another Humbucker.
Three Humbuckers are enough. I think if you put a fourth one on there, it might mess up the intonation. You would have to position the bridge to be lower and rewire the whole guitar
@MAREX 115 it's true, you know.
Irony, bro.
I think he needs to put a couple more humbuckers in the neck of his guitar.
Jajajajajajajajajajajjajaaja
Damn, I want this amp!
After seeing this a while back, well, you convinced me. Got mine (A blonde) a few weeks back. Loving it although I do wish they had a line out.
Nice video. I'm a Vox person myself. AC30C2.
good playing! cool amp. I've heard people complain about the verb, sound alright.
0:30 - 0:33.... wtf was that?
That's the sound of me selling all my gear and applying to colleges...
+The Craves lmao
it´s John lazy Bohlinger! god damn!
Literally said that out loud and then scrolled down to see if anybody commented on it. LOL. John rips though so it's okay.
it was some badassery covered in awesome sauce for my ears. I like it.
I'm impressed, a telecaster in a demo not playing funk or blues! Damn impressive.
I'm looking for a nice amplifier for studio recording. Please let me know sincerely. It this one noisy?
I would prefer something quiet as you know recording software are so sensitive to any annoying sounds.
Please let me know. Thank you!
Unbelievable playing... Wow
"Let's crank that pig!" Love it. Hair aside, dudes got the chops.
These amps sound great with a Strat. Like with the Tele, the notes have such great presence and definition.
Try a Les Paul into it... Or a Rickenbacker... Or a Gretsch...
Always had an interest in Vox amps, sadly my money has always been spent on social and livelihood things...never TRULY invested in guitar equipment, but this amp from the first second of this demo screamed out to me, straight up gritty, chunk and funky rock (do what you want with it) tone.. I love that!
Nice! A VOX in a small package!
Yes...yes...you have a great guitar dude.
I wonder if your hollow body enhances the dynamic of the reverb effect?
Sweet Tele dude only consistent complaints I've heard about these amps is the stock tubes suck, but a tube switch fixes that and heard it really livens up with a 12 or 2x12 cab 🤘✌😎
Easy enough fix!
0:51 Allllllllll righty then!
this or the fender princeton 65?? whats an overall better more versatile amp cleans and mean
I was keen to see the amp demo-ed when I'd read it weighed 12 pounds. After checking the Vox site it appears it's 12.3 kg ( 27.12 lbs).
+Chris Manuel Saw some things like that also. I think they confused 12 kg for pounds.
But it's still quite portable, even if it's 12 kg.
Definitely 27 lbs.
I have two combo tube amps with 10 inch speakers (Vox and Fender). They weigh 27lb and 24lb respectively. Find it inconceivable that the AC10 weighs only 12lb. More likely 12kg (27lb) - Sweet amp 😁.
You want lightweight 1-"12 combos between 20 - 40 watts RMS, go Ampeg, - especially the older vintage models.Fortunately, they ain't as pretty as Fender, so the prices aren't crazy, -and the Trem and Verb easily equal Fender counterparts.Hidden gems.
Cheers ace !
I WANT THIS GUITAR. C0OLEST PRS EVER.
Sounds absolutely sweet ! What pickups are in your guitar ? Thanks !
Humbuckers 😜
3 of them...
Hi does anyone on this channel own this amp? Is it true that its difficult to get a purely clean tone on this amp. If im wrong what are the settings on the amp that you use to achieve it? Ive been wanting to buy this but im having an issue with getting a clean sound on it. Also if anyone can recommend a simiilar tube amp in price that helps me achieve really good clean tones?
Thanks
Love that style.
mr. bolinger hits it on the head when mentioning Brad Paisley's tone. In his autobiography, "Diary of a Player", Brad recounts a hilarious anecdote about getting his first Vox AC 30 amps. Naturally he forgot to account, as a teen, for discrepancies between American and British voltage, and you can imagine the ensuing chaos. Now, of course, Brad has the droolworthy, Dr. Z Z-Wreck amps.
I just woke up and searched AC10 on youtube, things were going well until they panned up to his head, at which point i immediately thought, its way too early for this.
lmao
There is one for sale $200 without tubes, should I buy it?
I want this amp but not sure about the quality of the digital reverb compared to the AC15/AC30. Someone with experience please convince me that it's acceptable
Wow.....John's got his own signature PRS....nice.
Dude can play. Nice amp!
I like when he dimed the pig and goosed the bass
That's sold it for me I gotta get one of those wigs
Bohlinger is the man!
What's with the Something About Mary hair?
How is the volume compared to an AC-15, I found the 15 to be loud as hell for a 15 watt amp.
Gregg Parrish it’s loud as hell for a 10 watt amp!
0:47 my Mum caught me doing that as a teenager. Dinner was awkward that night!
Wow, I hope Vox is paying you, because you sold me on this amp. Fantastic playing. Aaaaaaaaaaalrighty THEN! Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Terrific review. I agree with you about the digital reverb. I would've preferred none at all and a lower price tag, or a better speaker at the same price (like the G10 Greenback or Vintage)
Adding a reverb probably costs next to nothing
Is there a guitar version of the Ace Ventura movie theme??
great vid n' great amp .. but got just one doubt ..could this amp sound "BOXY" for recording at studio?? I'll appreciate someone reply me..t-you =)
Best Vox AC demo I've seen. I think I'¡¡ buy. Not in Andertons because you don't ship to my country
Nice review bro !!
Wondering if i can gig with that 10 mic'd....🤔🤔🤔
Should be able to. Has a speaker out too.
Lots of noise when it was turned up, not so great for recording! Can't record with a mic in front of my Bassman either
Brad says can u do the bp thing once more but haf speed hes bout got it. Lol , Hope u get commission , im getting 1 today. Very good demo. Thx
This lacks the EF86 sound, though it is nice.
"dime this pig" can this guy give my eulogy
evil doug flutie
Ace Ventura turns Woodypecker!
I had it for a week. It has a killer sound. In my opinion a little bit better then the ac 15. But if you want to rehearse with this in a band.. I couldn't cut throught pretty well in the mix.
Gigging with a mic is ideal. Recording is perfect with it... But I wanted a bit more headroom and bought the ac 15, althought the AC 10 is a better sounding amp...
Anton Keulers Agree - AC10 has better tone then Ac15.
John Bohlinger: The 1st man to make a prs look cool
Agreed ,, they aren't the coolest looking unit. Naff, as the English say...
What size is that blues bottle?
+That smelly guy on the train Dunlop Blues bottle
I did not know that ace ventura testing guitar gear...
there's some thing about mary hairdo!
+ben galvin. It is Something About Mary hair. Totally been rocking that lately.
+John Bohlinger hey just a joke i wish i had the hair to do it! love your demo's and your playing is always great.
+ben galvin Thanks Ben...cheers
+John Bohlinger who wants to be taken seriously all the time? Rebecca Dirks will always be my favorite review. for obvious reasons lol but you rock too.
+John Bohlinger on a side note, I'm ordering one for xmas. thanks
Not everyone wants gain, some of would find Tremolo and Reverb a better combination!Nice unit, I had an AC4 and I use AD60 and 120 blue cloth Voxes mostly.
A nice tremolo pedal and you're fine!
Ac4 👎👎👎👎👎
I love my ac10. I think it's the best most versatile, affordable, true tube. It will handle jazz, hard rock, country, blues, progressive. It just sounds good, without pedals.
I think there is definitely a low end resonance in the tone of this guitar in general.
Alrighty then!
Not 12 lbs but 12 kg I believe. Still light.
would you recommend this over an orange micro terror?
GearsSprocketsElbowgrease thanks, I think I'm gonna get the vox
Erik Saldana its been a year, but i do strongly believe the vox is much much much better
It really depends on the type of music you play. The Orange will not have the clarity sparkle like the Vox. For Hard Rock and metal, I’d go with the orange. For rock, blues, Christian worship, country, the Vox is perfect.
That man can play!
and
How does it sound pairing with an acoustic guitar?
...and, while you're at it, how does it sound with a microphone and an accordion with P90's.... O_o
😝😝😝😝
My therapist: Ace Ventura John Bohlinger doesn't exist, he can't hurt you...
Ace Ventura John Bohlinger:
for a new ac10, i could find a used ac15... What to do, what to do....
Jason Edenilson if you want to use amp distortion maybe AC10? Pedal base maybe AC15
Holy crap I thought this was a clean amp, had no idea it had so much gain
if you set it right..but works well with OD pedals too
2:18 . The amp is not 12 pounds. It's 27 pounds, which is still very reasonable for the sounds you get.
Cool a channel where Ace Ventura tries out gear
go back and count how many times you say uh or um...it will help your future videos. great review. thanks.
What was the amp like? I couldn't stop looking at the hair...
Even the Tele has 3 pickups!
10:40 Yeeeee
there's certainly something about Mary ;)
This guys hair holy shit
holy shit it's awful
Hey when you're balding like me, it is quite enviable!
Hey! Ace Ventura!
Hmmmm... I guess there IS something about Mary. Lock on, Dude!
Good review, you've been practicing John, you are sounding good. I am not complaining but I don't see how you can compare this to a high dollar Dr. Z amp that Brad Paisley plays, this amp doesn't even come close but either is the price.
John, that hair. Oh my. Lmao !!!! Whats that ghost busters guy name ? Is it Peter Vankemen ? The tall skinny one, with glasses. Your awsome man. Not just anyone can rock a dew like you can. Thanks for this video.
Egon Spengler.
