  • In today’s video we’ll be taking a look at some Very Rare tier magic items, which are some of the hardest to find items in the game right under Legendary and Artifact items, and ranking some of the worst ones that are either too weak to be considered a Very Rare magic item, or outright useless.

    About Dragon Scale Mail, and while this is a niche example, it is one of the few medium armours (I am aware of) that Druids are allowed to use, as Druids are forbidden from using any armour that includes forged metal. While there are likely some other high tier medium armours that do not use metal, I would imagine a lot of them do.
    Also, Heat Metal exists, again something Dragon Scale Mail can protect you from.

      I would suggest making the armor from a chromatic or gem dragon scales Some DMs might still try to pull some metal BS.

      Shield of Missile Attraction comes to mind. If you give it to a character with high AC, they can essentially use it to protect more vulnerable party members from ranged attack.
      Could be ideal for an escort mission. Need to escort a noble who hired you because of the threat of assassins? Well that assassin looking to snipe them isn't a problem if you keep close with a Shield of Missile Attraction.

      At that level you could probably get a regeneration spell as easily as the very rare magical prosthetic, and not use up an attunement

    • @nickm9102
      @nickm9102 Před 3 dny +1

      It is the attunement slot to get that arm back. In a world where regenerate exists it is a big investment as for the item, this feels like a You buy it thing. If that's the case your DM should be just as willing to make the Ring of Regeneration available and as long as you don't drop to zero HP during the process you regrow missing limbs in 1d6+1 days. So take two days to a week off and you have your arm back. You can also charge for services to do the same for others.

      I've had several parties make full use of cursed items in clever ways. Best one ever was a player who combined the 2e necklace of adaptation with dust of sneezing and choking. He would prance through battle spritzing the dust everywhere to devastating effect. Our DM at the time labeled that strategy "dust of cheesing and stroking". Bless his heart, he just made us track how much we had until it was gone rather than nerf the combo altogether.

    The only good use of the Sword of Sharpness i seen was when the DM introduced an enemy that could only be permanently killed by that weapon. He could die in normal ways as well, but he would respawn a month later stronger than before. The party went on a long quest to retrieve the weapon during which they had to deal with the BBEG.

    It would have been cool if the hammer of runic focus allowed you and your allies a +3 to attack and damage rolls to creatures inside the rune's area.
    That or it would be cool as a weapon type called Weapon of Runic Focus with essentially the same ability but have +1, +2, and +3 varients with rarities of common, uncommon, and rare respectively. So a +3 weapon of runic focus could be given sooner than just a +3 weapon as the additional bonus is conditional instead of always being on and would really only benefit melee weapons

    I suppose that in the majority of these cases, it all comes down to the DMs intent. Other than when strictly adhering to a specific Module, the DM is the one picking the available magic items for a game as well as creating the opportunities to use them. If these two jive, great! If they don't, not sure why a DM would include them, other than just to mess with the players, always a BAD idea. Note; I'm not referring to Curses, those affect the Character, not Player.

    Frost Brand is also pretty bad. Only does 1d6 extra cold damage, and has no + to attack/damage. The resistance to fire damage might be helpful sometimes, but then potions of resistance are uncommon and might be readily available depending on the campaign. It can shed light, but only in freezing temperatures, and it can put out non-magical flames, which might come up as flavor a couple times.
    Compare that to the Flame Tongue, which is only rare and does 2d6 extra fire damage, and always sheds light.
    Not to mention the Dragon's Wrath weapons from Fizban's powercreep it to hell and back. The very rare version gives 2d6 extra daamge on top of a +2 to attack/damage, and gives a once a day aoe attack with a fireball's worth of damage. Oh and extra damage to nearby enemies on a nat 20 too just for good measure.

    I’m shocked you didn’t mention the Blood seeker ammunition, it’s pretty bad. It grants ranged attacks made with it advantage… if the target’s hit points are below its max for one attack, although it’s not consumed. That’s it. It gets worse when you remember the ammunition property mentions that you only recover 50% of your ammo fired after a battle. So there is a 50% chance you lose a very rare item for one reason or another. And because it’s a non-consumable, buying or finding them will be costly, just for ONE. RAW it is quite bad, but even if you handwave the book keeping, it’s just not good as a very rare item.

    lets be honest. cursed items in base dnd are absolutely no threat at all with how easy it is to just cast Remove Curse on it.
    thats why in my games remove curse is only the first step of a puzzle regarding cursed items. the spell itself wont work alone except for weak curses or if the spell is upcasted enough. this going along with some of my own cursed items of which are generally much higher on the power scale then normal items of their rarity but with powerful drawbacks makes dealing with cursed items a tricky game for the players in of itself. let alone other kinds of curses. especially lycanthropy and the other therianthrope curses. a 3rd level spell should not be able to cure that ever. 6th level at least has a chance. 7th for sure.

    Something about Dragon Scale Mail which makes it very good, is if you have a campaign with a dragon BBEG and the armour you get is related to that dragon, then it can be extremely good, kinda like some ultimate armour that one or more players have to forge to improve their odds. Even if mathematically or technically it's not good for its rarity, it is good for its intended use. (I doubt a DM will give out a set of black dragon scale mail if you are never going to fight anything acid related)

      For that purpose I would buff it greatly though. A +1 scale mail that does nothing but grant resistance to the dragon's breath weapon damage while eating up one of my precious attunement slot swould hardly be "ultimate armor". Also, the Absorb Elements spell and potions of resistance exist to grant the same resistance. And some races and classes get damage resistances too.

  • @TheMemo659
    @TheMemo659 Před 3 měsíci

    Strongly disagree with #6. You have grossly undervalued max damage every hit. Flame tongue, frost brand and dancing weapon are arguably the top tier DPS boost melee weapons in the dungeon master's guide. Let's use a great sword as our base weapon for the sake of crunching some numbers to compare the damage output of those to the sword of sharpness. Let's assume it is wielded by an extra attack melee character class who has hit with every attack (3 times in the case of the dancing sword).
    Flame tongue; 2d6 slash, 2d6 flame. Damage range 4-24 per hit, 8-48 per round. Median damage 24 per round.
    Frost brand; 2d6 slash, 1d6 cold. Damage range 3-18 per hit, 6-36 per round. Median damage 18 per round.
    Dancing sword; 2d6 slash. Damage range 2-12 per hit, 6-36 per round. Median damage 18 per round.
    Sword of sharpness; 12 slash. Damage 12 per hit, 24 per round. Damage 24 per round.
    Just raw crunching of numbers, the sword of sharpness is definitely on par with those other DPS boosting weapons. It's "niche" functionality on crits is just an added bonus on an already amazing sword. Put it this way, if one of my characters were given a choice between the sword of sharpness and the vorpal, my internal debate and number crunching would be over the benefits of max damage per hit vs a +3 bonus to hit and damage, NOT the crit functionality.

    • @TheMemo659
      @TheMemo659 Před 3 měsíci

      Bugged me enough to crunch those numbers as well....
      Vorpal sword; 2d6 slash +3. Damage range 5-15 per hit, 10-30 per round, Median damage 15 per round.
      So yeah. Minus the "niche" of the vorpal's deadly crit and the +3 to hit bonus, it's overall DPS output would be significantly inferior to any of the above 4 swords.
