  • In Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition each class gains something new whenever they level up - whether that’d be learning new spells, a new class or subclass feature, or gaining increased stats via your ability score improvements. And the purpose of gaining these new abilities is to help make your character feel stronger as a campaign progresses. However, In this video, we’ll be going over some of the worst features that you can learn from classes and subclasses which either have very little impact on the power level of your character from a roleplay or combat perspective or are just too niche to really make use out of in general.

    I'm playing an assassin in my current campaign and finally got to the level where I get Impostor. You're right, it comes far too late into the campaign to be that useful, as I've been hoarding letters, documents etc. all to forge them later on, but most of those enemies are dead already. We are in the endgame now, where we infiltrated the city of the BBEG and I have to be creative how to use that feature to get us access to certain locations. Luckily my DM is prepared for me to send forged letters and documents, so he plans ahead and gives us opportunities, where they can be helpful and one of the ways to get things done.

      Your dm sounds awesome. Such a frontloaded subclass. Only time I played a rogue I went Swashbuckler because I didnt want to play with magic, and the subclass progression felt like it synced up well with base rogue progression to feel like i was getting things constantly. Only made it to level 10, but panache was a ton of fun.

    Intimidating Presences is actually a little bit better because no where on that ability does it say you have to be raging or in combat in order to use it, so its mostly used for social situations like a lot of the others on this list. I was just about to comment this! Cause holy hell it's such a POS ability, I can think of a few scenarios in which these other features would be useful but how is it EVER relevant to see how high one of a creatures stats are? And when are you ever going to be able to observe something for that long before you get into combat?

    • @awsomeguy37
      @awsomeguy37 Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@mathizarrmalve6026 My first run of 5e, I was a Battle Master fighter. We were able to find a good few points where we were talking face to face with potential enemies but it wasn't often and felt very specific to that campaign (it was much more rare for any other campaign I've done) and even with the relative frequency of it, the information was almost never useful
      I think the one time it was useful sort of was when I learned an enemy, who was relatively high level wise to my character, had the same AC as me and that was it. It was the only time it had even a small amount of value through the campaign (which was cut short but still)

    • @LeonardAndHisBiscuit
      @LeonardAndHisBiscuit Před 2 měsíci

      First time I was running a Battle Master Fighter, the GM eventually put us into a swordsmanship contest where we could mingle with and figure out who all the other characters we would be competing against were. Naturally, I mentioned I wanted to know what I generally felt about all those categories from each contestant via the Know Your Enemy feat which I got a level earlier.
      The GM got flustered and I said it was okay if they didn't have all their stats filled out yet, it was quite a few contestants and it was only the start of the little adventure, then said I was okay with them getting back to me on it when it was all done up, but to keep it in mind. Next session the GM said it was an overpowered feat and I would not be benefiting from it. I was also told that I would not be allowed to benefit from the Blind Fighting fighting style while blindfolded during a point in the competition.
      It's a great feat to have in certain circumstances, studying an enemy before a combat and getting some general knowledge of how it might go down. Its range of use can be more broad than others on this list if you're playing the class well and approaching encounters cautiously, especially if you get introduced to a boss enemy early on and for long enough. Tournaments and contests can be the best places for the feat, but still hardly powerful enough to shaft players like what happened in my case though.

      Somewhat amusingly, as written it is not affected by illusions and some shape changing abilities. This has been used in my campaigns a handful of times for the Battlemaster in a social scenario to go “cool I observe everyone 1 at a time.” To find out who has higher hp i.e. whoever’s a threat and likely the villain.
      Pretty amusing, but yeah. It’s far too situational. Maybe if it was a Bonus Action it could be something, but even then.

    I can't believe Experimental Elixirs got snubbed, like you can use an action and a spell slot to make a potion someone else can (RAW) use their action to drink... Or you could just use your bonus action to cast healing word since you're probably making healing potions anyway.

  • @BeaglzRok1
    @BeaglzRok1 Před 2 měsíci +6

    It's crazy that D&Done got rid of Countercharm instead of making it a bonus action, even though they made Bardic Inspiration a reaction so there'd be that much less competition for it.
    Also, as previously stated, Eye for Detail is only "bad" because DMs don't run the rules RAW. Being able to use a Bonus Action to find the skirmishing Goblins and getting to attack instead of using your whole action and using your own Cunning Action for nothing productive is a great feature, but it relies on the DM, 1. actually using the rules, and 2. actually using hiding.

  • @ericpeterson8732
    @ericpeterson8732 Před 2 měsíci +9

    Eye for Detail only sucks because most tables don't enforce the rules for Perception and Investigation in combat. The rules state that if you want to investigate something in combat, you have to use your action. Player: "I scan the treeline for kobolds". DM: okay, roll a Perception check. Player: 24! DM: you spot three kobolds in the woods to your left. Player: I attack them with my bow. DM: sorry, no can do. You used your action to look for hiding creatures. You'll have to wait until next round.
    Because looking around is normally a free action out of combat, players assume it is the same in combat. Like talking. Or drawing your weapon. So Eye for Detail is only weak if your group is ignoring RAW. (Which most of them are) For the 2024 rules, maybe clarify that better or buff the feature to advantage on checks. No, wait, that's the 9th level ability. Maybe a +3 to checks? Something.

    • @BeaglzRok1
      @BeaglzRok1 Před 2 měsíci

      This is also why illusion spells live or die by the DM. If the DM notices that the high-INT, Investigation-proficient statblock has a high enough passive Investigation to beat your save DC, even if there's no narrative difference between a Major Image wall of stone appearing in their face and a Wall of Stone appearing in their face, then it feels like a big screw you for wanting to be creative and double-screw your action economy. I don't need my very clever cage to trap the Ogre that would never make the check being undone because "the first thing he'd do is try to break out and the spell doesn't hold up to interaction," ESPECIALLY when the DM also lets people disbelieve illusions based on someone else's claim. Wow, my third-level spell slot to try to hinder this small army is undone by one of them talking as a free action and now all of the soldiers suddenly know that the fake demon I summoned is fake.
      Hell, don't get me started on how 5e itself can hardly keep separation between Perception and Investigation, so you end up with Wizards begging the DM, "Can I please INVESTIGATE the room instead?"

    • @larsespeland6068
      @larsespeland6068 Před 2 měsíci

      it's true, no one remembers that in RAW that's how it goes. I just buff the roll, giving a +2 on checks, and let them do it as a free action instead of a bonus action.

  • @nikeshmistry99
    @nikeshmistry99 Před 2 měsíci

    I think the idea behind intimidating presense is to use it. Then as your raging use your frenzied rage feature to make a bonus action attack prolonging your rage. Is it still bad yes but not quite as bad as you make it out to be.

    I disagree on Enthralling Performance. Your argument is that an overly strict or ill willing DM might make the Feature useless, but there are soo many other charm and illusion based features that fall under the same mantle with way less explicit rules as Enthralling Performance. In fact the feature flat out spells out that the charmed creatures WILL help you and to what extent. As such even mechanically oriented DM's that normally wouldn't run social encounters this way can be persuaded by the black on white text here, while more open ended story driven DM's will want to give you an extra benefit over just performing regularly anyway.
