Top 10 Most Powerful Subclasses in DnD 5e

  • Every class in Dungeons and Dragons 5e comes with a wide selection of different subclasses. These subclasses can be taken as early as level 1 or as late as level 3 depending on your class. They come with a variety of abilities that augment or reinforce that particular subclass in specific ways, such as becoming a War Cleric if you're planning on being more combat oriented. So in this video, we will be going over some of the more popular subclasses which are generally considered really good. However, when going over this list, it's important to keep in mind that this list is highly subjective, since lot of subclasses are highly dependent on the campaign or setting that's being played.

    I love the divine soul sorcerer, but I don’t know about Divine Soul at #1 when I’d argue it’s not even the best sorcerer subclass. Clockwork soul and Aberrant Mind both give you more spells known which is patching the biggest weakness of Sorcerers. Also not having Hexblade feels a little off. Genie is super strong, but one level of Hexblade makes Paladin, Sorcerers, and Bards so much stronger than they would be straight. I would’ve also considered the divination wizard. Awesome video nonetheless.

      I think as a single class Genie is much more powerful. It is the most self sufficient way for a warlock to gain simulacrum which is crazy considers that Warlock DPR is very high and protecting the simulacrum means you can regain Mystic Arcanum spells, something a wizard simulacrum can never do. (I think they can still do spell mastery spells though). But warlock also have nifty at will invocation spells too that the simulacrum can possess resource free

    Noticed an oversight regarding Echo Knight and using Action Surge. Action Surge is only once per turn, even if you can use it more than once before resting. So the limit is 10 attacks an Echo Fighter can make in a turn unless something else can grant them a second Action Surge (and AFAIK there's nothing that can do that).

      @@Dan.the.Guitarman Not the party.... the DM. In almost every single table I have played the DM makes it a hassle, because he starts mentally torturing the party by saying "Are you sure you want to rest here?"... Then you finally make your best, to find the best spot to rest, for one hour, and the DM throws a random encounter. To all DMs I have played with, taking short and long rests has always been a hassle, that most of the times ends in a combat encounter and now you are with less resources and less health than before trying to take the short rest. And now no one is willing to take a rest. I think DMs are the main reason people do not want to take short rests, and sometimes even long rests.
      If you could take at least one guaranteed safe short rest a day, I guarantee you all parties would take that.... but as it is, the reason no one wants to take them is because we all know it most likely will end in a random encounter...
      Even with spells like Tiny Leomunds Hut, DMs have found a way, having enemies spring from the ground... or sometimes even outright banning the spell.

    1. It would help for these sorts of lists if the introduction mentioned what the criteria for the ranking are. Is it class plus subclass, or the impact of the subclass alone? How do you define power? What sorts of features do you value above others (e.g. Treantmonk always mentions his bias toward saving throw bonuses)?
    2. I'm really surprised to see double rogues and fighters but no wizards or paladins. I guess Paladins don't gain that much from their subclass compared to the base, but Wizard has some insane subclasses, especially Chronurgy.

      Chronurgist should not only be on this list, but literally be number 1, folowed by BOTH Peace and Twilight Clerics. Divine Soul is really good, but it's nowhere near Aberrant Mind and Clokwork Soul and it's arguably behind Lunar as well. Battle Master before Echo Knight is also really crazy. In fact, Battle Master shouldn't be on the list. As much as I hate to say it, no Rogue should be on this list, and Swashbuckler is my favorite class.

    It might have been easier pointing out the least powerful subclass than the most powerful. There are so many great ones. Some that could easily make the list: Phantom Rogue, Hexblade Warlock, Fathomless Warlock, Battlesmith Artificer, Chronurgy Wizard, Wild Magic Barbarian, and Pyromancy Sorcerer.
    Phantom Rogue gives the Rogue the ability to spread out damage whenever they Sneak Attack and more skill proficiencies is never a bad thing when it can flex into whatever is needed.
    Hexblade is just one of the best one level dips for Charisma casters as well as letting you attack using your Charisma with weapon attacks. It gives so much up front that is probably the most busted subclass.
    Fathomless is really strong giving some more damage for free early game and a pretty decent expanded spell list.
    Battlesmith is another one where it does give you a lot: a decent expanded list, access to all weapons, an ability to use Intelligence for weapon attacks, and a great pet to add a body to the board.
    Chronugry has one of the powerful abilities starting subclass abilities letting you force re-rolls and some other just busted abilities like the Stasis locking a creature out for a turn or the one where you can basic save a spell for an hour to use at any time.
    Wild Magic Barbarian is surprisingly powerful because of that Wild Surge. All of the except of the first ability are repeatable as bonus actions or have long term effects. Making it difficult terrain for only enemies in a pretty large area, teleporting 30ft for free as a bonus action, and free extra damage are all really nice but the one that changes your weapon is probably the most busted effect in the game, I'm not even joking. It changes your weapon damage to Force the least resisted damage type but changing the weapon to Light is the busted part. No other effect in the game, that I'm aware of, can make a Maul into a light weapon which means you can dual wield a Maul with another weapon. I'm not entirely sure how two-weapon fighting works but I'm pretty sure that having something that should only be two-handed in one hand is probably strong.
    Pyromancy looks kind of weak because it doesn't give you a lot but ignoring resistance to Fire and then later making Immunity to Fire into Resistance to Fire while making you immune is strong. Honestly nothing is more of a power move then burning something immune to fire.

    Okay, I know it's just a video, but we're talking about subclasses that immensely improve upon the base class I take it? How are we putting the Swashbuckler Rogue, which encourages rogues to play like a melee tank (incredibly stupid), over:
    1. Chronurgy Wizard -- even for a wizard, it breaks the wizard.
    2. Mercy Monk -- fixes many (not nearly all, but many) of the base monk's issues.
    3. Peace Cleric -- Similar to Twilight Cleric, fundamentally breaks combat at level 6, on a class that is probably around the top half of classes?
    4. Rune Knight fighter -- allows you to get an arguably better barbarian rage while keeping fighter features and scaling, without multiclassing. Incredibly good buff to the class.
    5. Hexblade Warlock -- the single best one-level dip in the game. Also a very reasonable damage dealer, allows the warlock a huge amount of versatility.
    6. Zealot Barbarian -- by level 14 you are, for all intents and purposes, unkillable, on a melee damage dealer/tank.
    There are probably even a few more. I'm just shocked that Swashbuckler, or Battlemaster Fighter, or even Divine Soul Sorcerer, can make this list over some of the above suggestions.

I used a stat array called flawed legendary (18 which I put into dex, 16 which I put into charisma, 2 14’s which I put into constitution and wisdom, 10 which I put onto intelligence and 7 which I put into strength. + 2 charisma for being a half elf so I have 18 charisma, + 2 into dex for custom origin so I have 20 dex). I was constantly bragging (all in good fun of course) about my +9 initiative bonus which will turn into + 10 upon our next level up by the end of next month although I’ll probably take the resilient feat for charisma which’ll only give me + 2 to charisma so my initiative won’t be increased but I will get advantage in charisma saves so if we get to level 13 I’ll be proficient in every soft stat saving throw as rogues already get intelligence save proficiency.

      Battle Master fighter is a very solid fighter subclass! Their fantasy is the idea of fighting smart, implemented in-game with a pool of maneuver dice. Those dice allow you to make your shots more accurate, knock an enemy prone, frighten them, etc.
      I'd call them the battlemaster the most 'standard' fighter sublcass. Simple idea but effective.

    • @SS4Xani
      @SS4Xani Před 11 měsíci

      @@gatorguard5931 Oh? Even more standard than the Champion? Interesting.
      Clarification: I tend to prefer the more spell-casting classes because I enjoy being able to use magic when I can so I'd need a good reason to play a - by comparison - imho less stylish class. Then again, I use that term and I may be speaking out of ignorance as when I've tried to play a fighter in the past, I find it boring because all I can do is go in, hit maybe once or twice, and then do nothing.

    • @gatorguard5931
      @gatorguard5931 Před 11 měsíci +1

      The Battlemaster's manuevers are kind of like low-level 'spells', in that they can enact similar effects to certain attack spells. They're still single-target focused, so you're not going to get to do big sweeping effects like fireball or hynotic pattern, which might not make a battlemaster the ideal pick for you. I think if you like spellcasting a lot, outside of Eldritch Knight, you'll struggle to find a subclass that really works for you with a fighter.
      If you want a melee spellcaster, I'd recommend any paladin or a Battlesmith Artificer, both of whom can have a lot of utility while serving more of a tank role. A hexblade warlock or a bladesinger wizard can also fill that niche quite effectively, though I would argue they're not as well geared toward absorbing damage.

      Battle Master is what you wanna play if you find most martials boring or you could from Pathfinder. Since Echo Knight is a far superior subclass (and usually banned), it's probably your best option.
      Tasha's suggested builds for Battle Masters are surprisingly solid for WotC competency, so you could look at those if you want it simplified.

Its not just drop them or incorporate them into your form it states specifically you can wear them if physically possible by the form. A magic ring can be a septum piercing on a bear, magic tattoos can work, and many forms could wear a cloak or necklace to gain more power in animal form. If you just made a mistake that's fine but you stated what is says in ability but left that part out. Thats not helpful to people learning about a new class.

    Hexblade is stronger than Genie no question. Additionally, Divination and Chronurgy being left off this list is the wildest take I’ve seen in a min, where is the wizard love at? Wizards are bascially 100% agreed upon as the strongest class in the game, so how did none of them make the list? Other than that, this list is not bad. I’d agree with the rest of the people in the comments and say certainly the swashbuckler is a great subclass but doesn’t feel as broken and OP as the top 10 or 12 subclasses in the game do. That swap and a couple subs for wizard subclasses and you’d have a pretty solid list

    Wow
    No Lore or Eloquence Bard
    2 more Magical Secrets sells a subclass more than adding the cleric list to a class that learns only 15 spells
    Cutting Words also works on reducing AoE Damage, and inspiring yourself with peerless skill works on initiative, stealth, Counterspell, etc
    Like, if you want to invalidate rogue in every way but sneak attack, take pass without trace and stealth expertise on a lore Bard, then grab an early counterspell so you can pick up wall of force and find greater steed at no loss at 10th level
    Also, a 1d6 to 1d12 saving throw penalty that almost no creatures are immune to means Eloquence Bard can melt all Legendary resistances with just Polymorph Spam Alone
    This is ignoring how both are better casters and equivalent/better skill monkeys than Rogues, especially when Bards can pick any skill unlike rogues
    Like, unless you *really* want sneak attack or metamagic, you'll get everything the top two subclasses offer if not better by just going lore bard and picking the right spell or two, especially with the rest of the Bard Class.
    Again, extra Magical Secrets on its own usually justifies Lore Bard as a top 10 outright just because the right two spells can completely warp how your party plays. Again a Lore Bard with Nondetection, Stealth Expertise, Pass Without Trace, and their winning smile and stealth selection is leagues better for party stealth, individual stealth, casting utility, and the like than an Arcane Trickster can usually hope to reach.

      Like, I have played a few divine soul sorcerers, I enjoy playing them. But I think you are underestimating how much of a drought the Divine Soul Sorcerer has in regards to spells known. Even if you split it 50/50 that is 8 Spells for each Spell List, not even enough to have one for each spell Level.
      2 Additional Spells from any spell list in the game, not counting against your base class' spells known actually makes it easier to pick magical Secrets Later on a Lore Bard as opposed to making it more difficult.
      Choose the low level MSecrets you want to open more high level options so you aren't giving up on Counterspell/Revivify/Fireball/Spirit Guardians/whatever low level spell you would have wanted if you choose other higher level options like Find Greater Steed
      You can get great mileage out of Divine Soul Sorcerer yes, it just complicates your base kit.
      Admittedly if it got the 10 Additional Spells known like the Tasha's Subclasses it probably would be one of if not the best subclasses in the game, but the lack of a large spells known expansion *hurts* when sorcerers already struggle to learn enough *Sorcerer* Spells alone, handling both is not really possible unless you severely neglect one spell list.

I do agree Clockwork Soul is the best Sorc subclass and Eloquence bard shoulda been on here. I think the power of the Sheppard druid is really based on the fact that the base druid class already has the most broken summoning spells in the game so it's really hard to say that the subclass of sheppard druid really makes that play style. ANY druid can be the most powerful summoner in a party, a sheppard is just a little better at it then those other druids.

    What's with the Rogue favoritism in this video lol? Swashbuckler is okay but not nearly as good as many other subclasses in the game not in this video, and Arcane Trickster is probably one of if not the best Rogue subclasses, but I don't know if even that breaks the top 10 best subclasses in the game, let alone top 2 lmao. Off the top of my head: Chronurgy Wizard, Divination Wizard, Peace Cleric, Lore Bard, VengeancePaladin, and Hexblade Warlock are all better than at least Swashbuckler

      Agreed. I think Divine soul sorcerer might be the best if it, like aberrant mind, got 10 bonus spells learned from the cleric list, leaving them with 15 spells known to pick up sorcerer spells. However, the weakness of sorcerer is its limited spells known, and simply giving it more spells to learn doesnt really fix that. If the fact it can learn cleric spells is the bonus, just play cleric because you aint taking any sorcerer spells either way.

    Otherwise we'd be seeing a lot of Wizard here.

    With the Twilight Cleric, you can't actually use Twilight Sanctuary with Steps of the Night as you described, as it emits dim light (the same wording as other light sources), rather than reducing the area to dim light (as Shadow of Moil does). As far as I know, Shadow of Moil is the only spell or feature in the game that reduces light levels in that way.

    So you clickbait with "most powerful" title but then don't event present the most powerful ones, nor do you give a proper scale or explanation to how you judge the subclasses power. Like arcane trickster and divine soul are both okay but nowhere near 2nd and 1st place.
    Like divine souls only really powerful feature is the fact that you can get cleric spells which are probably the best early game spells. Otherwise it has once per combat you really need to make a save (because using it to attack is kinda foolish imo), a bad way to use your sorcery points which forces you to be right next to the other creature. Unless you are the only healer in the party or there are two half healers (for example divine soul and lets say celestial warlock or something) this is not a great option. Then you have 8th lvl to your next power, at a lvl which most players do not play. If you don't have a way to gain 30ft flying speed at lvl 14 you are truly playing in quite a hardcore game (I mean there is a race that just gets this straight away sooo). And then at 18th lvl you have a feature that is good but this is your subclasses capstone so its should be good, however it is not so good that I would want to go divine soul all the way to 18th lvl
    Would really like to see more analysis and less cinematic´s

    • @taylorsmith9197
      @taylorsmith9197 Před 11 měsíci

      And the Divine Soul really gets hosed with the number of spells know. So the best feature of getting access to cleric spells isn't a slam dunk. You either grab so many cleric spells that you are essentially a squishier cleric with metamagic, or you are a sorcerer with healing word and revivify which isn't nothing, but not even as good as the Tasha's sorc subclasses

    • @shadenox8164
      @shadenox8164 Před 3 měsíci

      @@taylorsmith9197 Cleric spells weren't actually balanced around metamagic. That's not a combination to sneeze at. First place? No. But I wouldn't underestimate it.

    • @taylorsmith9197
      @taylorsmith9197 Před 3 měsíci

      @@shadenox8164 I mean it isn't a bad combo. Divine Soul Sorc is rightfully considered one of the stronger subclass options by many, but since the Tasha Sorcerers came out, I don't think the Divine soul is in the running for best Sorc subclass, let alone best subclass overall. I think the existence of healing word really puts a damper on the whole Cleric + Metamagic combo. I can't think of a spell that another full caster doesn't get that makes that combo so powerful outside of MAYBE Revivify and metamagic (which i did mention in my previous comment).
      Want to use extended spell with Aid or Death Ward? Clockwork Soul already can do that and have more other spell known than the divine soul and have other strong subclass features on top. How often do you need to be able to subtle spell nearly ANY cleric spell? Not many Cleric damage spells that would truly benefit from empowered spell. Heightened spell could be nasty, but you don't need cleric spells to get the most out of that one. In fact, I tend to think that the Cleric really doesn't have any unique save or suck spells. It's a very good class and combo, but don't see it anywhere near the top

  • @raigheb9306
